Dun Roche was a daughter of Noble Star, registered in the Connemara Pony Studbook as mare number 773. She left only one foal, a mare foaled in 1943 by the name of Winter Roche (sired by Creganna Winter) who would continue her line. Winter Roche had 11 foals. One, a 1966 stallion son named Finney Master was imported to France and then to Sweden 1981. He was a great sire and attained the status of Elite breeding stallion in Sweden. 1995 he died at the age of 29. Winter Roche’s daughters were good broodmares themselves and her line soon spread worldwide. One of Winter Roche’s daughters is Anna Maree (by Carna Bobby) who was foaled in 1954. She was the dam of four stallion sons: Lothario (by Island Earl), Cummer Park Comet (Kimble), Cummer Park Minstrel (MacDuff), and Carrabaun Boy (MacDuff). Her daughter Sally Maree (by McDuff) went to Denmark where she was as broodmare at Oxenholm Stud and was the dam of Oxenholm Shirley and Mandy and the stallion Oxenholm Matador (by Marble). Oxenholm Matador was exported from Denmark to England. He was a prolific showpony and went to Olympia 4 times and was a many time winner in-hand dressage and even competed in side-saddle classes. Oxenholm Mandy’s son Frederiksminde Hazy Marvel (Hazy Dawn) went to Finland. Her daughter Frederiksminde Madonna (Hazy Dawn) went to Germany. She is the dam of Premium Mare Kirkeledgaards Margaux. Kirkeledgaards Margaux was a broodmare at Pattys Connemara Stud and 4 of her progeny went to the USA: *Pattys Brown Sugar (Pattys Benedict) 1998 mare, who went to Colorado. *Pattys Etoile De Paris, (Pattys Broadway Dancer) a 2005 stallion and *Pattys Noblesse Oblige (Pattys Veuve Clicquot) a 2004 mare are both at Legacy Connemaras in Missouri. *Pattys Meredith (Pattys Silverdun Velvet) makes her home at Cobblestone Connemaras in California. Another son of Kirkeledgaards Margaux, *Pattys Bastian (Pattys Bengt Junior), a 2001 stallion has been leased to Ireland. A grandson of Kirkeledgaards Margaux, *Pattys Look At Me (Pattys Veuve Clicquot out of her daughter Pattys Maxime) a 2003 stallion is also in the US. The other influential branch of the Winter Roche line came through her daughter Frosty Winter (Clonkeehan Auratum) a 1961 mare. Frosty Winter was the dam of Snowy Winter (Abbeyleix Owen) who went to the Netherlands and was the dam of the stallion Brimstone Van Graaf Janshof (Sticky). Brimstone started his competitive dressage career at the age of 22 and retired at 25. He was a winner in-hand and sire of top ponies in the Netherlands. Frosty Winter’s other daughter Breath of Spring was the dam of the good producing stallions Dangan Dan (Rebel Wind) and Tantallon Bobby (by Carna Bobby). With her daughters, the full sisters Breath of Wind and Crockaun Crème de Cacao (Rebel Wind) she would found two separate thriving branches of the mareline. Breath of Wind was the dam of the stallion Cuaifeach (by Killyreagh Kim) and the 1976 mare Grey Rock Star (Kimble). Grey Rock Star won her classes at Clifden in 1980, 1981 and1982, she later went to Scotland but not before leaving behind a daughter, Grey Rock
Star 2nd (Ashfield Alex). Grey Rock Star 2nd is the dam of Swedish stallion El Larry (by Loobeen Larry). Grey Rock Star’s full sister, Harvest Lady (Kimble) went to Germany. Breath of Spring’s daughter Crockaun Crème de Cacao (Rebel Wind) would bring the Dun Roche line to America. Before being exported to the US she left behind two daughters Abbeyleix Camilla (Coosheen Finn) and Abbeyleix Pheasant (Finnian Leader). In the US she had several foals, full sisters Maplehurst Molly MacDaire and Maplehurst Tilly MacDaire (Gilnocky Ard Rih MacDaire), Glenmary Amaretta (Lynfields Kiltuck) who produced several foals sired by Bobby Brown and her full sister Glenmary Ameretto. She was also the dam of Big Bears Molly Brown (by Bobby Brown). Authors Note: The Dun Roche line is so expansive that it would be difficult to cover all the ponies that the line has produced. Therefore I concentrated only on the lines most worthy of notice. It is a large line and seemingly one that will continue to grow. It was interesting to note that the US contains two separate branches of the line, one an older import and the other a more recent appearance.
