Situated at the center of Medan city Indonesia, Kampung Madras contains cultural and historical values. Decades ago, Dutch government dominated Indonesia including this city, Medan. Seeing opportunities for tobacco plantations, the Dutch started hiring contract workers from India and China. To maintain cultural differences and tensions among workers, they created regulations by separating them based on their origins, including this district. It used to be a dwelling place for only the Indians. However, as the era shifted to post colonialism, it resulted in changes of urban settlement forms.

Today, this district is not only home for Indians but also for people from different ethnicities such as Chinese, Arab, and the locals.

SIGNAGE

STREET FORM THE MALL On the 30.000 square meters land area, this modern shopping mall stands luxuriously among the old retail buildings. This mall has become a new attraction for the public especially young people and family. It is a one stop shop center where people can shop or just hang out. This mall has about 142 exclusive tenants. There are various coffee shops, cafes, restaurants, food court, gym and movie theatre.

BLOCK & BUILDING TYPOLOGY

The main street is defined and formed by these narrow houses along the street. Known as ruko, these houses are commonly attached to each other and are about two to three storey floor. The first floor is used for commercial purposes while the second or third floor is used for residential. For more than decades ago, these ruko buildings have existed and nowadays, they are proudly still standing firm. However, this district encounters challenges to answer the need of growth. Increase density by creating equal job opportunities and by bringing more affordable housing are necessary to bring “life� to this inner circle

As a district with unique political, economic and socio cultural setups, a comprehensive yet applicable concepts needs to be developed.

Implementing sustainability as a framework, this project addresses long term strategies to improve the living conditions of the residents in Kampung Madras.

The three main objectives are : 1.To maintain its characters as a multicultural district 2.To nurture public-private partnership in the development process 3.To enhance and reconstruct the physical form in response of health and environmental issues The desire outcome from this project is to create a sustainable and resilient district model in various aspects that can be applied to other parts of the city.

Aside from its historical values, the current condition of Kampung madras portrays its adversity to respond various issues that occur. Yet, Kampung Madras still solely depends upon the current physical forms and functions in response of those demands. As a result, it can be seen nowadays where buildings are aging, roads are “struggling” to accommodate the flow of vehicles, and river is flooded with garbage.

The draft model on the left shows the analysis of pedestrian flow and vehicular flow. Key location and or buildings started to “intertwined” and overlap and develop a valuable information to be used for revitalizing the district

MACRO SCALE

Several interventions needs to be taken in order to bring a “fresh” look of this district.

Replacing some of the older buildings are required to increase the density and to bring “relieve” to the area. Newer developments are intended to enhance the cultural values and to embrace the diversity. Such interventions must embedded in the macro, mid and micro scale. To ensure that it would promote growth and reduce social disparities, the governments also need to pay attention to the regulations and policy within Kampung Madras.

THE URBAN “ACCUPUNCTURE” Some interventions at the block scale are also applied. To achieve the main objectives, which is to maintain Kampung Madras as a social district, several interventions at the block scale are proposed.

1. The first column shows how to increase social engagement by replacing and creating different types of pocket spaces.

2. The second columns illustrates the possibility to increase density by replacing some of the older buildings to newer buildings that has higher standards and codes 3. The third column proposes “rebranding” businesses that can encourage foot traffic.

CURTIS HIXON PARK The Life Between Buildings

FRONT VIEW

Curtis Hixon Park is located in the Downtown Tampa. It serves as a public park with several buildings surrounding it. One of them is The Tampa Museum Of Art. The goal of this project is to observe the area in between the building and the landscape elements. Mapping key points such as people gathering, people walking, public facilities are required to “read� the area and see its potential values

The corridor in between Tampa Museum of Art and the playground area is wide. It is approximately about 20 to 26 foo.

Based on our team observation, people rarely stand along this covered corridor. Interventions need to be made such as creating steps to the playground area Nam ut est. In vehicula venenatis dui. Vestibulum ante ipsum

THE MEANINGFUL STEPS The intent of the steps is to create intermediate zones that can provide interactions for both areas yet not breaking the boundary. It is to create a space where people can sit and enjoy the landscape, or to direct people to the buildings. Connecting this area by blurring the intermediate zones is essential to break the stagnant flow at this corridor.

VICTORIA ISLAND, OTTAWA Known as “Chaudiere”, the hidden beauty of this island captivates many attention. Located between Quebec and Ontario, this island has treasured many historical and cultural values. Not to mention one of its potential beauty ; the Falls. Nowadays, we can see a huge dam producing clean energy for some. The beauty has yet to be polished.Some large industrial companies such as Domtar still shows its massive presence on the island while the first nation people clustered more to the east and dwells in tents. The majestic Chaudière has been and is a sacred place; “a natural sanctuary“ described by Samuel de Champlain in one ceremony, one of the first Europeans who crossed the Chaudière.

The Chaudiere island was once heavily industrialized in the 19th century. The islands at the Chaudiere Falls and Chaudiere Island immediately to the east and Victoria island east of that. The falls are about 60 meters(200ft) wide and drop 15 meters (49 ft). The area around the fall was once heavily industrialized and provided a significant contribution for the area.

THE DAM. Block free-flowing river systems, hindering the flow of nutrients and impeding fish and wildlife migration.

Cause massive erosion of the riverbanks because of the sediments Impact negatively the aesthetics and character or the natural settings -Alter water temperatures and oxygen levels critical to species survival and to good water quality.

DERELICT SITES. Significant portions of publicly owned rivers are inaccessible to the public -Hard impervious surfaces -Lack of character of the sites because of abandoned/derelict of post industrial buildings.

RESTORING THE LANDSCAPE

- Restore the riparian vegetations, river, and banks by replacing the dam into an even more environmentally friendly energy sources - Ensure Chaudiere Island as a destination by transforming the post industrial heritage buildings into atrractive places

Hull Site Ensuring that Chaudiere Island would become a destination in the future, we incorporates mixed use residential commercial design across Victoria island on Quebec site. Pedestrian system, and easily accesible public spaces are also integrated in the design.

GREENSIDE DISTRICT - THE CITY OF OLDSMAR In order to reinvigorate the entirety of Oldsmar, we need to start with the downtown area.

To create a contemporary city that channels the ethos of Mainstreet USA, we have implemented a multi-function mixed use development. The development along mainstreet is low height with dynamic to create an ideal pedestrian experience. The street is peppered with coffee shops, bars and unique shops to create an environment that will attract a diverse range of people at all hours of the day. The development has bike lanes, pedestrian paths, and street parking to allow people utilizing all modes of transportation access the downtown area. Key aspects of this incluse the introduction of greenery in the form of trees that function by adding shading, and capturing water to be reclaimed by the cities expansive stormwater infrastructure.

Thoughtfully integrating a mix of land uses create a more vibrant and sustainable communities in contrast with the conventional development that separates land uses.

In previous plans to rejuvenate Oldsmar, there was a was a lack of vertical development that we see as critical to the areas development. Creating dynamism across different building typologies and different framings of public space is essential for a vibrant town.

WALKABLE BLOCK CONDITION The diagram on the left shows the proposed block and building typology to encourage walkability. Breaking the block sizes is the effective starting point to promote safer streets for pedestrian.

Transforming the block sizes is vital to create a

resilient neighborhood. Along with mixed use development, it provides a way to plan for growth that protects the environment and strengthen the economy.

DILEMMA : VULNERABLE TO FLOODING SOLUTION : LID APPROACH Low Impact Development (LID) is an innovative approach for stormwater management with a principle that is designed after nature: manage rainfall at the source using uniformly distributed decentralized micro-scale controls.

LID’s goal is to filter, store and infiltrate runoff water. Techniques are based on the premise that stormwater management should not be seen as stormwater disposal.

Instead of conveying and managing / treating stormwater in large, costly end-ofpipe facilities located at the bottom of drainage areas, LID addresses stormwater that is more cost effective than conventional sewage system.

The flooding that Oldsmar has faced can be addressed with using this LID approach that can be applied to open space, rooftops, streetscapes, parking lots, sidewalks, and medians.

My name is Jessica Djahamata. As an urban designer, I am interested in looking closely at various scales of urban design, from small neighborhoods to large cities. My focus has been on developing visions for a place that would “fit” for the people to work, play and to live in. I enjoy doing research and analyzing the relationships between the physical, sociocultural and economic context within a particular area. I love to engage with people in the community and to help them taking part in the planning and designing process for their places.
