Typography - Book Binding An article about the history of typography written by Fred Richard was the basis for this small book. Playing with a black and white format, the images were all designed as silhouettes of an “Alice in Wonderland archetype chasing a rabbit through words created by letter forms. The images focused on simplicity to show off the font choice and act as a compliment to the article. The images were created in Adobe Illustrator, while the book layout was all done in InDesign.

Gretel’s Teapot - Restaurant Branding I’ve always had an infatuation with an old-fashioned tea parlor and Gretel’s Teapot is my attempt at branding my own. I focused on more natural imagery as well as a slightly more Victorian style. The pale colors were selected to reflect this time period as well as make the menu feel vintage and elegant. The illustrations were all initially hand drawn, but the trees were later turned into vector images.

Lynnette Desk Calendar - 2013 More than designing posters and flyers, print design can be applied to all sorts of projects including original calendar creations. This desk calendar sits in a paper frame that was die cut by hand. Each month is displayed on a small card with the character, Lynnette, dressed for the month as well as having a corresponding color such as light pink for February and a cool blue for January. Everything was made in Adobe Illustrator and the frame was made with a high quality card stock that was folded using an original pattern.

America’s Largest Free Admission Park

Knoebels - Website/Logo/Ticket Redesign A common problem with amusement parks are their websites. Generally suffering from a lack of originality and a confusing interface, Knoebels was no different. This initial screen design of Knoebels’ home page is example of how it can be made more illustrative as well as have the information more organized. I kept Knoebels’ family-friendly style, but made it more natural with colors to emphasize the unique element of how they also have a campground alongside the theme park.

Napa Valley - Illustrated Guidebook Being from Northern California means I’ve traveled through Napa Valley a few times, but never had the chance to stop and enjoy it. This short tour guide was my chance to discover and, in turn, allow others to discover what Napa Valley has to offer. The challenge of this project was to make a travel guide without any photographs. The rule was no photographs could be used unless I took them myself and I wasn’t in the position to fly cross-country to do just that. This allowed me to play with hand illustrations to make the guide still appealing by illustrating the impression of Napa rather than the sites themselves. After the copy was gathered and the illustrations were made, the images and type were arranged in InDesign.

Candy Shop Pop - Popcorn Packaging This project required creating a popcorn product, naming the product, and then creating a brand identity for said product. I created Candy Shop Pop: candy coated popcorn that comes in a variety of sugary flavors. Each of the jar labels were designed in Illustrator and the advertisement was designed in InDesign. I chose to design each flavor around a specific color having everything be bright and festive to appeal to a mostly female audience.

A Dash of Panache - Website/Logo Redesign There is a tea parlor in Roseville, Ca called A Dash of Panache. Regardless of the café’s quality, their website displays otherwise. I took it upon myself to mock-up a redesign of both their logo and their screen design. My goal was to simplify their content while keeping an elegant and “girly” design. I kept their color scheme with the exception of a few unnecessary hues. The screen design was created in Adobe Illustrator. I also coded the homepage using HTML and CSS, but since this was just for practice it never went live.

Omi: Visual Fairy Tales - Zine Design The fairy tale by Hans Christian Anderson, The Snow Queen, has been source of inspiration for me for several years. I thought it would be interesting to see this story told only through images in a small, comic format. Named after the German word for “grandma,” Omi was designed as a monthly zine that would feature a different graphic novelization of common fairy tales. The imagery resembles paper puppets to reinforce the concept that this is a children’s production.

Cornish Associates - Internship I took an internship at Cornish Associates during my senior year at Johnson & Wales. I worked in their social media department where I created various graphics for their website, Indowncity.com. I used various Adobe programs to create each graphic depending on the content, utilizing Illustrator, Photoshop, and InDesign the most. Most of the graphics featured here were made for holidays or weekly features, some of which are recurring. The design I made for “Ask a Chef was created as a template in InDesign that would be reused for each featured chef.

Pip’s Sleepy Dream - Children’s Book I adore children’s books as an art form. There are many different and creative ways to write and design a book for children; it’s practically limitless. Pip’s Sleepy Dream is my initial attempt at a children’s picture book. The story’s told mostly through images with little streams of text for the child to follow along. The images are made of bright, cool colors to keep the child intrigued while not over-stimulating them. This book’s images were made entirely in Illustrator and then placed into InDesign for printing.

Freewriters - Subscription Box Subscription boxes are a rising trend currently and I thought it would be fun to design a box for young writers, thus the creation of Freewriters. Freewriters is a monthly box that provides subscribers with a selection of goods pertaining to the months theme. Generally, products would consist of a notebook, pencils, pens, as well as the main feature, a small magazine called the “prompt book.” The child would be led through the world of writing by the mascot character, Montgomery: a green, alien-bird who appears on all the products and website. This prototype’s theme was mysteries and even has imagery based off the Nancy Drew novels. Most of the designs were done in Illustrator, while the prompt book was made in InDesign and the cover was drawn by hand and colored in Photoshop.
