Uptown Hostel + Youth Center

Design for the Community

The Uptown Youth Center and Hostel work hand in hand to create a lively and unique community atmosphere. Programming of the Uptown Youth Center consists of educational, physical and learning spaces. The Uptown Hostel programs include sleeping spaces and a number of amenities. The driving force behind the Uptown Youth Center and Hostel are its programs and their target markets. Guests from each space will be dependent upon one another. Social interaction and relationships with the community will be fostered by focusing on common interests such as music, language and food. Through programming, stakeholders of the Uptown Youth Center and Hostel are invited to grow, learn and play among friends, family and community members.

Old Meets New

The Uptown Youth Center and Hostel are in response to the recent growth in the Chicago neighborhood of Uptown. The building is placed among a number of popular music venues which attract community members, local youth and travelers from around the world. The building is located at 4753 North Broadway. The main entrance is on the west side of the building, while the service entrance is located on the east. The building is in an active area near a Chicago Transit entrance and offers parking nearby. Uptown Youth Center and Hostel involve a number of contrasting elements. The space combines eastern and western design to determine how their principles fuse to define a built environment. The structure of the building allows for the older beaux-arts architectural style to shine through. Although some elements, such as the main mezzanine ceiling, will remain, they will be altered in minor ways such as color or material application. The interior spaces will link old with new through furnishings, lighting and material choice.

Camp Hotel

in collaboration with Esau Ramirez

The Future of Camping

Camp Hotel is a radically innovative 60,000 square foot space introducing the experience of camping in a modern context. This hotel ignites the spirit of adventure in guests who yearn for an escape from routine. Guests partake in the common practices of camping by creating a sense of community and connecting with nature all while sleeping in comfort. Camp Hotel provides breathtaking views to engage each guest and aims to deliver a seamless transition from indoor amenities to outdoor adventures. Camp Hotel’s target audience consists of travelers, explorers and adventurers. Camp Hotel combines the future of the hotel encounter through interaction, the sustainability philosophy through alliance and the stakeholder’s vision through immersion. Camp Hotel’s mission is to inspire guests to explore, dream and discover.

Connection Through Nature

Camp Hotel is located in California’s Yosemite National Park in the El Capitan Meadow. The main structure, the center of its network, houses all amenities. Camp Hotel offers three types of “sleeping” experiences depending upon a guests level of adventure. The Explore experience takes place in the mountainous area of the meadow. Guests are required to exert physical energy to reach the rooms and explore about. The Dream experience takes place on the lake front. Guests cross a bridge to reach each room. The Discover experience takes place in a heavily wooded area. Guests are surrounded by lofty trees and an abundance of animal life. Camp Hotel’s design concept is deeply influenced by nature, specifically the growth of certain structures and networks. A rhizomatic network values connectedness between structures. By definition, a rhizome is an underground stem of a plant which often sends out roots from its nodes, also having the ability to grow upward. Camp Hotel has inhabited these features into its structure to produce a synergy between each program. Each program is dependent upon others. In this sense, Camp Hotel strives to arouse a feeling of community and discovery, almost as if one is exploring through the forest itself, peeking around corners to see what emerges next.

Guest Rooms Camp Hotel’s guest rooms are located in three locations within El Capitan Meadow; Explore experience is located in a mountainous region, Dream experience lies on the lakefront and Discover experience is placed in the woodlands nearby. Despite the three varying settings, the structures remain consistent. The building massing of the guest rooms follows the form of the main structure. Each experience guest room contains two levels and an outdoor rooftop. Each guest room is simple, allowing users to focus on the exterior scenery. A sleeping space and living area make up each room. A shared rooftop patio provides guests a chance to mingle.

House in the City

A Residential Space

The House in the City consists of 5,000 square feet of residential space in the neighborhood of Lincoln Park in Chicago, Illinois. The interior of the four story home meets the needs of a four person family including two teenage sons and a nanny. Neutral colors in public living spaces allow a prized tapestry to shine. The tapestry is placed in the open stairway near natural light and the master suite. A large piece of cherry wood is highlighted in the kitchen as the island bar top. The feeling of the house is light and airy with distinctive color and material differences between private and public spaces. A floating staircase and use of glass throughout the home create a bright and open atmosphere.
