LETTER FROM THE president Dear Students: We are at a critical point in the life of West Virginia University — and in the lives of sororities and fraternities. Nationally, Greek life has come under tremendous scrutiny. Some have asked if Greek organizations even have a place on the modern college campus. The answer is up to you. While in college, I joined Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity. The lessons I learned and the friends I made greatly enriched my college life. The Greek community offers wonderful opportunities that can expand your own college experience. There are many positive changes occurring within our Greek community at West Virginia University. We are hiring a new director of Greek life and are investing in a Greek system that reflects the Mountaineer spirit. Our student leaders are working hard to ensure that all Greek members respect their community, excel academically and go on to accomplish even greater things after they graduate. In August, 1,000 new students reached out to perform community service before attending their first class. Thousands more embraced new traditions like Saturday Night Lights and a re-imagined FallFest. We are working smart and playing smart — in true Mountaineer fashion. Together, we will continue to change the culture at West Virginia University. I am confident you will help us in doing so. I encourage you to explore how the Greek system can add to your college education. Make the most of this opportunity — for yourself and for your University. Sincerely, E. Gordon Gee President, West Virginia University

Greetings Mountaineers! On behalf of the Office of Greek Life, I would like to thank you for your interest in the Panhellenic experience. Sorority formal recruitment can be a very exciting week, and I hope that you take the time to make meaningful connections with sorority women, Rho Gammas, and other potential new members during this time. From my own experience as a collegiate member of a sorority and now an alumna member and Greek advisor, I know how rewarding of an experience this can be. You will meet many amazing women who may become your support system, confidence boosters, tutors, mentors, and best friends. Throughout the week, I urge you to keep an open mind. While you may have some preconceived ideas about individual chapters within our community, the best way to find your fit is to engage in conversations at each and every chapter event you are invited to. Be open and be yourself; you never know where you might discover a great sense of sisterhood. Have a fantastic sorority recruitment and I look forward to seeing you around! Let’s go, Jessica Li, Program Advisor
Welcome to West Virginia University! My name is Vivienne Treiber and I am the Vice President of Recruitment Coordination for Panhellenic. It is my job to plan and oversee all aspects of Panhellenic Sorority Recruitment. I am so excited for you all to start your next exciting adventure at WVU. It has been one of my best experiences of my life. You are about to embark on one of the most exciting and rewarding adventures of you college career. Joining Greek Life at WVU truly is something special. We have made huge changes in the past year to push our Greek Community forward to be one of the best in the Nation. You are the future of this Greek Community and I truly hope you enjoy every minute of it, take every chance you get to empower yourself and to reach out to others to make life-long friendships. Our Panhellenic community has about 1,105 women in total. These women have been in your shoes and have felt exactly how you feel right now. They went through recruitment and have found their homes at one of the eight chapters on campus. It is now your turn to learn from them about why their values match up with their chapter’s values. These women were in your shoes either one, two or three years ago. Use these women as your map to Bid Day. Ask questions, listen to their experiences and then think about where you feel the most comfortable. I challenge you to choose your own adventure and really take this opportunity for everything it has to offer. I am so excited for you to experience the sisterhood, love and friendship that all these women have with each other! Vivienne Treiber, Vice President of Recruitment Coordination

Crest: The shield is a protective influence for our entire membership. A lamp denotes leadership, scholarship and enlightenment. The laurel wreath signifies victory, or achievement of ideals. While the sword piercing the wreath indicates willingness to fight for ideals, it symbolizes, too, penalty of obligation, also bravery, achievement and discipline. The mantling surrounding the shield is the protecting cloak that education gives us and is the protective influence of organization. Thus there in the mantle is inscribed the name of the National Panhellenic Conference.

Sorority Recruitment What is Sorority Recruitment?
F
ormal Recruitment is the main process that National Panhellenic sororities at WVU use to recruit new members into our chapters. Formal Recruitment is conducted during the Fall semester about 6 weeks into the semester so the Potential New Members have a chance to become comfortable on campus before joining an organization. Formal Recruitment starts with Potential New Member Orientation that begins on September 22nd and 23rd where PNM’s learn the ins and outs of Recruitment Week. They will meet their Recruitment Counselors, also known as Rho Gammas, who will be assigned to a group of PNMs that they will be there to guide through recruitment. It is important to recognize that Formal Recruitment is a mutual selection process. All women are able to visit each of our 8 chapters on the first round (Sisterhood Day) but the remaining rounds throughout the week are invitation only. Just as the sorority chapters are narrowing down the number of invitations to each round, you as the Potential New Members are making selections based on your experience with each sorority. The Vice President of Recruitment Coordination and Recruitment Counselors will explain this process in detail during PNM Orientation! The Recruitment Week starts on September 27th with Sisterhood Day in Woodburn Hall. Sisterhood Day is the first round of recruitment where the PNMs can focus on learning the foundation of each chapter and to start forming connections with the active sisters. Monday, September 28th is the first of two breaks in the Recruitment Week. This day is designed to prepare for the week ahead. Tuesday and Wednesday, September 29th and 30th are House Tour Days. This is when PNMs get to see various chapter houses. You will also see a financial presentation where each chapter explains their individual financial obligations. Thursday, October 1st is the second of the two breaks in the formal recruitment week.
13
WVU panhellenic
The next round of Recruitment is Philanthropy Night, on October 2nd. This is where you will be able to see more into all of the tremendous acts that sorority women do on a daily basis. You will learn about their local and/or national philanthropy and what is special to their own chapter here at WVU. The next round is Preference Night. Preference night is the final and most special night of the Recruitment week. This is where you will visit one or two chapters that you visited previously all week. You will participate in a ceremony which gives you a deeper look into the sisterhood of each chapter. The final day of the Recruitment Week is Bid Day! Bid day is where PNMs receive their “bid cards which is an invitation to join a sorority as a new member. Each house celebrates the new member class by uniting at the chapter house, taking pictures and spending time together!

FOUR PILLARS of GREEK LIFE Sisterhood:
Joining a sorority is the beginning of an adventure that lasts not only for four years but for your entire life. Sisterhood is something that is special that it is hard to put into words. Sisters are there during your highest triumphs and lowest of defeats. Sisters pick you up and rise you up to new heights. It truly is an honor feeling that sense of sisterhood. During your first semester in your new home, you will learn about your sorority’s values, traditions and history. This is where your first memories will be created with your new sisters. Learning about others while making new friendships, you will in turn learn more about yourself than you would have ever thought. Each chapter participates in events such as sisterhood events and retreats, professional development, big sister and little sister reveals, new member class reunions, community outreach and much more. Also, it is very common for chapters to attend WVU events together such as football games and fall fest. Here at WVU joining a sorority means finding your home.
SERVICE: Sororities here at WVU spend thousands of hours each year
doing community service and philanthropic efforts. Being involved in the greater Morgantown community and each organization’s philanthropy is a very large part of our Greek Community. Each sorority has their own philanthropy that they annually raise money for by hosting events for Morgantown community and for WVU fraternities and other sororities to participate in.
15
WVU panhellenic
LEADERSHIP: Membership in a sorority provides numerous opportunities to discover what type of leader you can be. Leadership can take many forms such as holding an elected or appointed position or being a rolemodel for your fellow sisters. Joining a sorority gives you an opportunity to develop leadership, problem solving, and interpersonal skills that can help you in all aspects of your life. Taking a leadership role is a great way to network in our community. Chapters also provide multiple educational programs in areas such as time management, character building and effective communication strategies. Sorority women have been known to seek out leadership positions on campus, (such as in academic clubs, service clubs, student government, etc.). Sororities encourage active involvement in other campus organizations and to develop the skills necessary for their members to become excellent leaders.
SCHOLARSHIP: Academics and grades are the sole purpose of why we
spend time here at WVU. Academics and grades are our number one priority in the Panhellenic Community. Each sorority has a program that is designed for every member to excel in the field of academics. These programs include study hours, tutors, and major matching where older sisters help younger sisters with effective studying and navigating their major. A really cool opportunity the majority of our chapters on campus have are house textbooks and notes from classes sisters have taken in years past. Therefore, all the sisters can have extra opportunities to excel in their classes! WVU Greek life takes great pride in being one of the top organizations when it comes to grades. The all- sorority average in Spring 2015 was higher than the all-women’s average at WVU.
Values, Programming and Traditions is a part of Greek Life that drives our community. Our Panhellenic main values of our organizations are Sisterhood, Service, Leadership and Scholarship. Our programs focus on the development of our leadership and communication skills, academics, value- strengthening and risk management techniques. Our traditions at WVU are deep rooted in all of our hearts. Some of our Traditions are not only special to Greek Life but to our University as a whole, like Homecoming and Mountaineer Week. During these weeks in the Fall Semester there are multiple events that we can participate in teams such as Greek Games, Homecoming Float Building and the Homecoming Parade, the PRT cram and many more. A new tradition we started in the Fall of 2014 is that each team must have a President Gordon Gee look alike on their Homecoming Float!

recruitment TIPS Recruitment Tips for Success
1. Be Yourself! Each chapter at West Virginia University has their own personality and characteristics. Be yourself and show each chapter who you are. That is the best way to find your perfect home! 2. Manage your time! Recruitment rounds are scheduled to begin and end at certain times. Make sure to be on time and be prepared for each day. If you are late for a recruitment round, contact your Rho Gamma ASAP! 3. Ask Questions! Think about what is important to you. You want to find the right fit for you, so finding out if your values match the chapters is a great way to find that right fit. 4. Wear Comfortable Shoes. Feel free to bring flip-flops or flats to walk to each house in and then change into your other shoes. 5. Engage in Active Listening! Sit Up Straight, leave your cell phone in your purse, try not to look at your watch. Make eye contact and ask questions! The members want to learn more about you just like you want to learn more about them! 6. Stay away from controversial topics such as religion, brands, boys, etc. However, if you have a question about something conversational ask in a respectful manner. Focus on what is important like; what values does the chapter value, that you do as well, what opportunities that chapter can provide, what philanthropy that chapter supports, why that member joined that sorority, sisterhood events, etc.

Questions To ask Looking for some great questions to ask the members during the different recruitment rounds? We have thought up some great conversation starter questions below! Feel free to ask any of these questions. Remember try to ask open-ended questions, and to avoid questions that can be answered with yes or no!
Sisterhood Questions What are some of the things you do together as a chapter? How do “big and littles” work in your chapter? What made you feel at home in this chapter? Do you ever socialize with your alumnae?
Philanthropy Questions What do you like most about your chapter’s philanthropy? Do you do a lot of on-site volunteering, or is it more fundraising? Do you have any new philanthropy events planned?
Academic Questions What are your chapter’s academic programs? What are some of the majors of some of the girls in this chapter? Does your chapter have a mentoring/tutoring program?
Experience Questions What was your biggest challenge when you first joined the chapter? How did you work through it? What is your most cherished memory from being in your chapter? How do you balance your time with school and being a sister in your chapter?
Leadership Questions What are the opportunities for chapter leadership? What are some other activities on campus that your sisters are involved in?

Mutual selection Recruitment is a mutual selection process that balances the preferences of each potential new member (PNM) with those of the sorority chapters. The goal of the Panhellenic Council is to give each and every young woman that go through recruitment the opportunity to find a sorority that fits their personality, interests and goals. Invitations are only guaranteed to PNMs for the first round of recruitment which is Sisterhood Day, on Sunday. Invitations to subsequent rounds are made based on the selections of the chapters and the preferences of the PNMs. Our goal is for the PNM to meet as many chapters as possible during her recruitment experience. Therefore, there is no guarantee a woman will receive a bid to any sorority. However, if a PNM progresses through the week, attends all of the formal recruitment events and she is invited to the final formal recruitment round and lists each of those chapter(s) on her preference card that night, she will likely receive a bid to one of those chapters. So be yourself, ask questions and trust the process!
WVU panhellenic
26
MRABA You might hear the term MRABA during your recruitment experience. A MRABA is a Membership recruitment acceptance binding agreement. This agreement is so each potential new member is informed about her options for joining a sorority. At the end of the recruitment week, each PNM is given the option to sign a MRABA. In order to receive a bid from a sorority on campus, the MRABA must be signed. The MRABA states:
1. I am willing to accept an invitation to membership from any sorority that I list on this agreement. 2. I may limit my choices to just one or list any sorority whose preference-round (last) event I attended, and from which I am willing to accept membership. I realize that by not listing the maximum number of sororities where I attended preference events, I may be limiting my potential to join any other NPC organization during primary recruitment should I not be placed with my choice(s). 3. Once I submit this agreement to the College Panhellenic Association, I cannot change the order of my preferences or add or delete a preference. 4. If I do not receive an invitation to membership from an organization listed, I am eligible for continuous open bidding. 5. I have the option of not submitting an agreement at this time. 6. Once I submit this agreement, I am bound by the National Panhellenic Conference Unanimous Agreements, which state that if I receive an invitation to membership from an organization that I have listed and then do not accept it, I am ineligible to be pledged until the beginning of the next primary membership recruitment period on the same campus.

WVU panhellenic
questions
TO ASK YOURSELF Before signing your MRABA, ask yourself these questions regarding your the chapter(s) you visited on Preference Night. I would participate in supporting this chapter’s philanthropy because it is interesting to me This chapter seems interested in having me as a member This sorority has members that I’ve really connected with during the recruitment process Being a member of this sorority will have a positive effect on my collegiate career I can be myself while visiting this sorority This chapter and I have a lot in common pertaining to my values Many sisters that I’ve talked to in this chapter understand the importance of academics This sorority makes me want to reach my full potential I would participate in events this chapter holds on campus I would happily accept a bid from this chapter and I could see myself as a member Making the decision about which chapter to call your home can be extremely difficult. However, keep in mind that this is a life-long decision so take your time to gather your thoughts and pick the best chapter for you!
Once you sign the MRABA you are bound to that bid until the beginning of the next primary recruitment membership recruitment period. This means that if you sign an MRABA this means that if you decided to drop out of your new member period, you may not accept another bid from another NPC sorority for one full year.

hazing HAZING The Panhellenic Council cares deeply about the health and safety of not only our Potential New Members but our new members and active members.
