‘London Umbrella is a response to the ’A Smarter City: Ideas for the City of London’ Competition.

Teamed up with a transport planner, we developed the concept ‘London Umbrella’, a mobile application which connects mobile users, independent businesses and local communities

Different themed trails and Weekend Treasure Hunt Trails would allow users to earn points and encourage activity in the city. Users have to participate to be able to receive points and redeem discounts from independent shops and cafes. The app will inspires people to get out exploring in their local area, and also provide benefits to the economy.

The centrepiece physical infrastructure items are a limited number of large solar ‘Green Umbrellas’, which act as free charge points for electronic devices. The umbrellas would be moved around different green spaces, pocket parks and open public spaces, advertising the ‘park of the month’. The giant Green Umbrella would be a basis for weekend community events with health stations, pop-up restaurants and cafes, gym equipment, and child’s/adult/elderly play. It will be linked with the trails and will encourage physical activity.
