HOW TO GET TO DE PALM ISLAND By bus: Full-day or half-day packages are available including round-trip transfer from and to most major hotels. Book at your hotel concierge desk or online. By car: If you’re exploring Aruba by car, consider De Palm Island as a stop for lunch, snorkeling, swimming or relaxing. From downtown, go 2 miles past the airport and make a right at the first traffic light (Balashi). Follow the road till the end and make a left and first road right again. You’ll reach Port De Palm and the parking lot (free) at the end of the road, from where the ferry will take you to De Palm Island. The Ticket Office at Port De Palm is open till 2:00 p.m. daily.

The picturesque Chapel of Alto Vista was the island's first Roman Catholic Church, built in 1750 and reconstructed in 1953. The small, bright yellow chapel is reached by a winding road, lined with white crosses marking the Stations of the Cross.
BUSHIRIBANA GOLD MILL RUINS
In the 1400s and 1500s, adventurers traveled throughout the Caribbean in search of wealth and treasure. According to legend, Aruba's name comes from "Oro Ruba," which means "red gold." In 1824, gold was finally discovered in Aruba, and the industry produced more

than 3 million pounds of gold. Today, remnants of this history can be seen at places such as the Bushiribana Gold Mill Ruins on the northern coast. The abandoned gold mill once processed ore from mines in the nearby hills during Aruba's gold rush of the 19th century.
CASIBARI ROCK FORMATION
Casibari's huge tonalite boulders sit together in an area just north of Hooiberg. This rock formation rises up from the desert soil to create an unusual setting and spectacular photo opportunities. Some of the boulders weigh several tons and feature peculiar forms. The Government of Aruba has
created walking trails and steps through the boulders, allowing hikers to reach the top to obtain breathtaking views of the island.
CALIFORNIA LIGHTHOUSE
Found on the north side of the island, the hilltop landmark was built in 1914 to warn ships nearing Aruba. Also known as "Hudishibana," it was named after an American steamship that wrecked off the shore in the late 1800s. The lighthouse is still in operation today. While the interior of the structure is closed, the views are stunning and it is a great place to watch the Caribbean sunset. The lighthouse is currently under renovation, expected to be completed by mid-2016.

NATURAL POOL
On a deserted stretch of coastline, dramatic shows of water spraying over the rock occur on a regular basis as the tide rushes to shore. In a unique formation of rock, volcanic stone circles a small depression, creating a tranquil pool known locally as "conchi" or "Cura di Tortuga."
NATURAL BRIDGE
For thousands of years, pounding waves and strong winds have slowly chiseled away at the limestone cliffs along Aruba’s
north coast to create several natural bridges. The largest of these bridges used to be the famous Natural Bridge, which collapsed on September 2, 2005. Despite this, it is still the most photographed natural bridge and it remains a popular tourist attraction in Aruba, with the adjacent and intact Baby Bridge also meriting a visit. The natural arch (as it used to be), measured approximately 25 feet (7.6 m) high and 100 feet (30 m) long, and was the remnant of an ancient cave. Since the collapsed bridge is now blocking the ocean from the beach, magnificent sceneries of the waves bursting against the rocks can be viewed from the bay behind the ruins of the bridge.
The Natural Bridge and Baby Bridge are a stop during many island tours and can also be reached with your own car. The roads are not perfectly paved, but a 4WD is not necessary. The Natural Bridge is just a little farther down from Bushiribana Gold Mill Ruins, passing the Ostrich Farm. From the Natural Bridge you’ll have a view to Andicuri Beach. This beach can only be reached with a proper 4WD or organized off-road safari (see page 25 -> UTV). For tours to the Natural Bridge by bus, see page 26 and by Land Rover see page 23. Area and Climate: Aruba is 19.6 miles (30 km.) long and six miles (10 km.) across at its widest point, totaling 77 square miles (193 sq. km.). Outside the hurricane belt, it has an average yearly temperature of 81°F/27°C, tempered by northeasterly trade winds. Location: Aruba lies 15 miles (24 km.) north of Venezuela and 890 nautical miles from the equator, at 12 degrees 30' north latitude and 69 degrees 58' west longitude. Car Rental: Agencies are located at the airport. You can usually drop off or pick up your vehicle there, or request pickup at your hotel. Your concierge can help you rent a car. Taxi: Cabs are also widely available, though you do not typically hail them in Aruba; you must call ahead to make arrangements. Also, taxis do not have meters. Buses: There is daily bus service between several of the island's larger districts and the hotel areas. The main bus station is located in downtown Oranjestad. You do not usually pump gas for yourself in Aruba, so check if there are attendants available to pump gas or if you are at a self-service station.
