Greetings Dear Visitor, It’s no surprise Charleston has been called the most beautiful city in the Southeast. Careful restoration and preservation of our historical buildings has blessed us with a palette of lovely pastels in brick and stucco on cobblestone streets and bluestone sidewalks. From our beginnings as Charles Towne Landing in 1670, today we are a town filled with markers, monuments and commemorations. A place of natural beauty, our beaches, plantations and gardens are beautiful spots to visit. They’re also a source of inspiration to our local artists, who fill fine art galleries with impressive sculpture and paintings of Charleston’s brilliant colors. Local activities include fly fishing, hunting, surfing, golfing and kayaking. Those seeking a little retail therapy will love our Charleston City Market, famous King Street and other worldclass shopping options. And when it comes to dining, our temperate climate, abundant farm fields and bountiful waters inspire Charleston’s chefs to create delectable dishes. Best of all, we’re known for our classic Southern hospitality — we locals are ready and willing to show off all the beauty, culture and history Charleston has to offer. Welcome! Sincerely,

Susan Lucas Local Editor, Discover Charleston

Historic Preservation T H E Y E A R S H AV E B E E N K I N D

TO C H A R L ES TO N . From a rough beginning as Charles Towne Landing in the 1600s, the port city was propagated by people, customs and cultures from Europe and Africa whose influences are still visible today in its architecture, traditions and arts. And it was lucky: Charleston has been hit by hurricanes, multiple wars, earthquakes and fires. It was even spared destruction from General William Tecumseh Sherman’s infamous march to the sea during the Civil War. Today, the city sets the standard for historic preservation and restoration. The peninsula alone has more than 3,000 historic buildings, according to the Charleston Heritage Foundation, one of the many volunteer and nonprofit groups whose mission is to preserve and restore Charleston. When it became a municipality in 1783, the city adopted a motto that echoes its dedication to preservation: “She guards her buildings, customs and laws.” How appropriate that this statement feminizes the city, because the first real proponents of preservation in Charleston were women. IN THE BEGINNING

The National Society of Colonial Dames of America (NSCDA) and the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) “took up the charge of stimulating interest and pride in the nation through the preservation of the city’s earliest buildings,” according to Charles Edwin Chase, former Charleston city architect and preservation officer. In 1901, the Colonial Dames acquired the pre-Revolutionary powder magazine at one of the oldest remaining structures from the permanent settlement of Charleston in 1680.

Since 1931, the Old and Historic District has grown from 138 acres to more than 1,000 acres. In 1941, the Carolina Art Association undertook a survey of Charleston that was the first inventory of historic architecture of an American city. They spent three years physically viewing and documenting every one of the 1,168 buildings in the historic district. In 1944, the association published the survey in This is Charleston with text by Samuel Gaillard Stoney. This survey stood until 1974. Historic Charleston Foundation, Inc. was chartered in 1947 and began a Spring Tour of Homes fashioned after those in other southern cities that showcased restored historic sites to visiting tourists. In 1959, Historic Charleston Foundation began to focus on the rehabilitation of entire neighborhoods through an aggressive purchase and resale agenda. They established a revolving fund for options or outright purchase with the idea that one or two buildings successfully restored on a street would cause others to follow. And they did. The program took dilapidated — sometimes abandoned — houses and restored them as beautiful single-family homes. hensive architectural inventory, ranking of buildings and area plan. This was the first inventory taken since the 1944 Carolina Art Association effort. The National Park Services said the plan “became the centerpiece for planning and zoning efforts on the peninsula for the next two decades. It recommended a downtown revitalization strategy and stronger enforcement of building codes and height restrictions.”

The most significant factor in Charleston’s restoration and revitalization in the last 40 years was the 1975 election of Mayor Joseph P. Riley Jr. Born in Charleston, Riley is a Citadel graduate and a lover of the arts, history and architecture — and therefore dedicated to the revitalization and economic development of his city. In 1975, downtown Charleston was run-down; there was no high-end shopping, no fine dining and few good hotels. It was a tired city. Right from the start, Riley’s administration was aggressive and commissioned Barton-Aschman Associates, Inc. to develop a commercial revitalization plan for the historic commercial core of the peninsula. Riley envisioned a new centerpiece and building block that would be the anchor for renewing the area, keeping businesses downtown and avoiding the rush to the shopping-center suburbs so common across the country. He chose a blighted block at the most important commercial corner in the city at Market Street. The preservationist community was split on the issue, but Riley prevailed with funding from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, and a new 600-room hotel and retail center, Charleston Place, began the rapid, private revitalization of King, Meeting and East Bay streets. The greatest challenge to Charleston’s preservationist revitalization came from Hurricane Hugo. In the early hours of September approaching 120 mph, affecting 85 percent of the 3,500 properties in the historic district. Immediately after the storm, a consortium that included the Preservation Society, Historic Charleston Foundation and the National Trust for Historic Preservation came together to assess the damage to the historic district. Top Honors FANS ARE RAVING ABOUT CHARLESTON AND ITS TOP DI N I N G AN D SPORTS OFFERI N GS . Once you’ve experienced Charleston, it’s hard to put a finger on the specific thing that makes it the perfect vacation destination. Maybe it’s the Southern hospitality, the natural beauty of its tidal creeks and beaches, its award-winning cuisine, or its outstanding golf and tennis opportunities. Really, it’s a combination of all of these things and more. Put them all together and it’s no wonder that the savvy readers of Condé Nast Traveler selected Charleston as the top American destination in the magazine’s most recent Readers’ Choice Awards. “Charleston, South Carolina, has risen to the top,” Condé Nast Traveler Senior Editor Lisa Gil told NBC’s Matt Lauer on the “Today” show when the awards were announced. “It always hovered in Top 10, and it clinched the top spot this year. We think friendliness is the key. Southern hospitality goes a long way.” Charleston made its debut on the magazine’s Readers’ Choice list in 1993, coming in at No. 6. For almost two decades, it held its own on the list alongside major metropolitan areas such as San it claimed the No. 2 spot behind San Francisco. Then in 2011, after more than 27,000 readers voted, Charleston finally captured the No. 1 position as the favorite of well-traveled readers — proving

Grasses are harvested in spring and summer by pulling the blades out of their roots, like knives from sheaths, and then dried for coiling. Today source materials are considered plentiful, but access to growth areas is limited and the population of weavers is aging, making the baskets even more valuable and rare. Beautiful buildings house big-name brands like Apple and Banana Republic; however, it’s the number of family-owned boutiques... that really distinguishes King Street... you’ll find Southern hospitality persists year-round.” Charming King Street is a perfect mix of nationally and internationally recognized names, like Brooks Brothers, Banana Republic, Le Creuset and Talbots, located alongside Croghan’s Jewel Box, Hampden Clothing, Bob Ellis Shoes and Seeking Indigo. In fact, the Charleston peninsula maintains a 72 percent locally owned and operated business base. That’s good news for small shops like Julia Santen’s art gallery, whose space is more suited to a vintage poster gallery than a national clothing store. Lower King Street, also called the Antique District, is the beautiful, quiet end of the street. From Broad to Market streets, it’s the best antique shopping in the U.S. according to the readers of Travel + Leisure. You can find antiques from any period and from all over the world, but there’s a lot more to Lower King. Charming hotels, fine dining, and women’s and men’s fashion boutiques are there, as well as fine jewelry and couture cosmetics.

FLOWERTOWN

Summerville was founded in the 1600s when settlers sailed up to the headwaters of the Ashley River, past the plantations, and found a refuge from the summer heat. The pine trees that provided the seasonal protection became so important to the area that in 1848 an ordinance was passed restricting the cutting of trees. Once called The Flowertown in the Pines, Summerville features municipal and private gardens, architectural beauty, arts, sports and culture that make it a great place to visit or to live. Start your Summerville shopping outing at the Central Avenue boutiques, walk the shops on Main Street, check out Richardson Avenue and be sure to admire the many historic homes in the area. If you’re lucky, you’ll be in historic downtown Summerville during their monthly party. Every third Thursday of Square, the park in the center of downtown, becomes a venue for music and art with alfresco dining and family-friendly outdoor entertainment.

European Flair J UST AS SPRING COMES TO A CLOSE, SP OLETO FESTI V AL U SA OPE N S I N C HARLESTO N. For 17 days and nights at the end of May, Charleston’s historic theaters, churches and gardens are filled with the sounds and visuals of this world-renowned performing arts festival. Now in its 36th year, the festival was founded in 1977 by Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Gian Carlo Menotti as the American counterpart to the Festival dei Due Mondi (Festival of Two Worlds) in Spoleto, Italy. Menotti searched for a city that was as charming as Spoleto and had the availability of intimate theaters, churches and open-air performance spaces. Charleston was the ideal location; no other place in America offered the complete package, where the festival could envelop the city and provide such a knowledgeable and appreciative audience. Historic Charleston’s preserved architecture and outdoor venues lend the perfect setting for the festival’s diverse performances. After all, Flora, the first opera performed in America, was held here at the Dock Street Theatre, the first building in the colonies built exclusively for theatrical performances. Charleston was also home to the first ballet company in America and currently has the oldest musical organization in the country, the St. Cecelia Society, which was founded in 1766. Typically opening the Friday before Memorial Day and continuing through June, the Spoleto Festival presents more than 100 ticketed performances in opera, theater and dance, and chamber, symphonic, choral, jazz and pop music. 78 Street Theatre, “a fitting complement to the world’s best musicians. The acoustics in the newly renovated theater remain at the top of the list of local venues for music. Clarity and volume, with little reverb or reflections, plus top-down frequency reproduction, are the theater’s hallmarks.” Geoff Nuttall, founder of St. Lawrence String Quartet, returned in 2012 to lead the chamber music program. As first violinist of this world-renowned foursome, he has performed more than 1,500 concerts throughout North and South America, Europe, Australia and Asia. Here in Charleston, Nuttall welcomed the return of many internationally celebrated musicians, including pianist Stephen Prutsman, who was recently appointed artistic director of the Cartagena International Festival of Music, and has been described as one of the most innovative musicians of his time. Cellist Alisa Weilerstein also joined Nuttall, along with violinist Jennifer Frautschi. THE LITTLE SPOLETO

Art and Inspiration L I K E A D I A M O N D, C H A R L ES TO N ’ S A RT

S C E N E H A S M A N Y FAC E T S . Charleston’s natural and architectural beauty inspires creativity in artists of every discipline. Local visual artists express their unique perspectives in paint, sculpture, fabric and photographs. Traveling artists come to Charleston just to soak up some of the inspiration and return home forever changed by time spent in the Lowcountry. Browsing Charleston’s highly diverse art galleries will give you a sense of Charleston’s sophistication and complex personality, but be forewarned. You are very likely to fall in love with an artistic treasure here and just have to take it home. Rick Reinert is an award-winning artist who doesn’t have to provided me with the ultimate reference library. I believe that it is possible to study painting for a lifetime and never have to venture more than one square mile for constant challenges and a wealth of subject matter,” Reinert says. “Every day offers unique and exciting opportunities for the artist who follows the light.”

Take home works of art that serve as reminders of Charleston’s architecture, streets and skylines. Reinert’s impressionist style lends itself well to the architecture of downtown Charleston. The Lower King Street studio/gallery he shares with artist Kevin LePrince is a beautiful indoor/outdoor space, giving him endless opportunities to explore and experience the colors, moods and atmosphere of his surroundings. Charleston textures are sand and sea, stucco, brick and wrought iron, canvas awnings, bluestones and cobblestones. Rick Reinert’s textural paintings capture all the above with playfulness, drama and bold strokes of color. If you want to take home a work that serves as reminder of Charleston’s architecture, streets, skylines and sense of place, you’ll find none better. Kevin LePrince is more likely to incorporate birds and dogs, fish and frogs, scenes from a fox hunt, and other activities inspired by relationships in and around nature. His titles are clever, such as A Seasoned Fisher, A Good Listener, A Little Nosey and Life in the Sticks, which all apply to birds. Like studio-mate Reinert, LePrince is an impressionist. He incorporates bold strokes and a tighter color palette than most, collections all over the world. Modestly, he calls himself an oil painter. Spend time in his gallery and you’ll call him a master. Charleston’s skies have long inspired artists with a palette of colors you don’t see anywhere else. Visitors have become residents once seduced as the bright blues, purples and pinks in our sunrises

and sunsets. Artist Lese Corrigan channels those colors into wide daubs of texture in skies full of clouds. Visit the Corrigan Gallery at 62 Queen Street to see her playful, colorful pieces, expansive collection of work and a bevy of other Charleston artists who are also represented there. Carolina Clay Gallery at Freshfields Village takes Lowcountry art 3-D with one of the largest and most beautiful collections of pottery and clay sculptures in the region. “The pottery is made by men and women who are continuing a 200-year-old tradition in the Carolinas,” owner Janet Sbihli explains. The gallery offers the perfect example of how differently artists interpret the local influences. Lowcountry artist Kelly Thiel, represented at Carolina Clay Gallery, discovered her gift for sculpture during a class at Charleston’s Gibbes Museum. Marty Celum Biernbaum was inspired by kayaking and hiking, both plentiful in the area. Susan Gregory’s memories of her South Carolina childhood include large grassy fields, stormy ocean waves and friendships with the roots of canopied oaks. She translated that inspiration to her Eudorabora Pots, as beautiful as they are functional. Betsey Wall Carter also studied at the Gibbes, establishing herself as a master at clean lines and simplicity of form. If you look at the colors in her vases, bottles, plates and teapots, you’ll see the blues, greens, browns and yellows of the Lowcountry. Inspiration can come from a wide range of places, and there’s no point in being provincial when it comes to art. That may leave you pondering, what do muralist David Boatwright, the South Carolina Watermedia Society and Polaridad Complementaria, an exhibition by 23 acclaimed Cuban artists, have in common? They have all been shown at Charleston’s City Gallery on Waterfront Park. Six to eight exhibitions run throughout the year, and the gallery strives to present unique artists and art not generally part of the Charleston art landscape. Set in one of Charleston’s most beautiful locations, you’ll be drawn to the gallery for its exhibitions, then linger in the harbor where park benches are plentiful and children play in the fountains. The City Gallery is at 34 Prioleau Street in the French Quarter area of the city. It’s no wonder that from Gallery Row on Broad Street to Michael Mitchell’s eclectic gallery representing more than 30 artists on Upper King, Charleston is the place to discover the art collector within you.

W O R K T H E I R M A G I C I N T H E LO W C O U N T R Y. As Charleston is to fish, Muse is to Mediterranean, and Chef Howard LaFour is the creative genius that links them together. Order the catch of the day and you might get a dreamy corvina with celeriac puree, lightly smoked sunburst squash, baby zucchini and grape tomatoes, but only if everything is impeccably fresh. You might find a perfectly grilled local mahi-mahi with heirloom tomatoes, arugula salad, watermelon radishes, embellished with a Parmesan frico and local honey vinaigrette. Halls Chophouse on Upper King Street is one of the city’s most popular restaurants. The Hall family brought fine traditional steak house fare to Charleston with four-star service and capital “A” atmosphere. Chicago’s Allen Brothers’ steaks are aged to order under the meticulous directives of Executive Chef Matthew Niessner, who also creates imaginative seafood dishes, sides and salads. There is an extensive bourbon list, fine wines by the bottle or glass, traditional cocktails, and decadent desserts. Best of all, there’s always a Hall on duty, sometimes the whole family, to greet you warmly and ensure that all your needs are spectacularly met. Mercato is plush, beautiful, trendy and chic. The food is just what you’d expect from such a fine atmosphere, classic Italian with locally sourced ingredients, wonderful pastas, and hearty lamb, pork, veal and prosciutto dishes. In the Italian tradition, the chef will create imaginative specials that are as beautiful as they are delicioso. Mercato also boasts one of the town’s great bars. B I RT H P L AC E O F LO W CO U N T R Y C U I S I N E . Today, it is consistently called on as a favorite destination for both locals and visitors, but three centuries ago 82 Queen Street was part of the original Charles Towne Landing. From the home of a Barbadian immigrant, to enduring wars and natural disasters, 82 Queen Street was reborn as one of Charleston’s most celebrated restaurants. In 1982, three restaurateurs had a vision to provide a uniquely Charleston dining experience with a focus on fresh, local cuisine and gracious hospitality. They had the perfect setting consisting of three buildings and a garden courtyard nestled in the Historic French Quarter, but they could not agree on a name. Founding partners Harvey Poole, Joe Sliker and Chef Steve Kish decided to simply use the street address as the name: 82 Queen. Feeling that there was a portion of Charleston’s culinary heritage that was being overlooked, 82 Queen’s original menu featured dishes influenced by the African, French, Caribbean and Anglo-Saxon tastes that once permeated the area. The fusion of these culturally diverse flavors led to the rise of a culinary genre that had previously been undefined — it is now referred to as Lowcountry cuisine. Celebrating its 30th anniversary, 82 Queen is still known for its gracious Southern hospitality and fresh local cuisine. Amongst the many fine dining establishments offered throughout Charleston, 82 Queen has not only held is own, but continues to earn recognition, having been voted Best City Restaurant by the readers of Southern Living magazine multiple times and receiving Wine Spectators’ Award of Excellence for five consecutive years. At a young 27 years old, Executive Chef Steven Lusby is proudly carrying the 82 Queen tradition into the next thirty years. His menus feature dishes that are prepared simply with local ingredients. Embodying the history of the Holy City and the cuisine of the Lowcountry, this history address is sure to be around for another 300 years.

Tee Time CHARLESTON LEADS THE W AY W ITH

C HA M PIONSHIP LINKS AND TOURNA M ENTS . The Lowcountry’s grasses, trees, sand, marshes, ponds, rivers and ocean views provide a spectacular backdrop for some of the best golfing in United States. And that’s quite fitting, since Charleston is considered by many to be the earliest home of golf in the country, dating back to a 1743 shipment of 96 golf clubs and 432 golf balls that arrived in the city from Scotland. Records of that shipment, to a Mr. David Deas, predate the first permanent golf club in Yonkers, N.Y., by 145 years. So you might say Charleston has been ahead of the game for quite some time. Today, Charleston is home to more than 20 golf courses that are meticulously maintained, offering exceptional variety and challenge for players of every level. The moderate weather allows play all year with costs from $40 to $400 per round, with slightly higher rates in the spring and fall. The area’s natural beauty has inspired renown golf course architects, including Pete Dye, Jack Nicklaus, Robert Trent Jones, Arnold Palmer and Tom Fazio. And they’re not the only ones drawn to this area. Amongst the natural beauty of Charleston and its amazing golf courses, you may encounter unfettered wildlife, from eagles and egrets to armadillos and alligators, so make sure to keep an eye out while you’re on the greens! If you’ve come to test your skill, play where the pros play: The Ocean Course at Kiawah Island ($280–$390), which was ranked 25th in Golf Digest’s 100 Greatest U.S. Golf Courses. The Ocean Course has 10 holes bordering the Atlantic, more ocean-side holes than any other course in the Northern Hemisphere. Designed by Pete Dye, The Ocean Course hosted the 1991 Ryder Cup and the 2012 PGA Championship in August 2012. Dye’s design elevated

Beach Basics T H E O C E A N I S I N T R I N S I C TO T H E LO W CO U N T R Y L I F E S T Y L E . Charleston-area beaches are some of the best reasons to live and visit here. In addition to simply planting your chair and devouring the latest Pat Conroy novel, there’s a lot to do on our seashore. Walk your dog, ride a bike, kayak, paddleboard, surf, kiteboard or just party — whatever you’re looking for, we’ve got a beach for that. Our beaches are basically oversized sandbars or barrier islands separated from the mainland by a shallow body of water. They are on a shallow, gentle slope that you can walk for 100 feet or so and still have your toes planted on the sandy bottom. At the end of each barrier island is a tidal inlet through which the waters ushering high and low tide rush in and out. All the beaches are good for cycling, surf fishing and kayaking. Be careful if you are in a party mood; public beaches do not allow glass containers and most prohibit alcoholic beverages. Fines for booze on the beach can set you back more than $1,000. Kiawah Island is renowned for almost 10 miles of Atlantic Ocean beaches. National Geographic Traveler called Kiawah Island the Second

Most Romantic Beach in America, and the Travel Channel honored it as one of the Top 10 Beaches for Families. Beachwalker Park is the only public beach access where there are lifeguards on duty. Seabrook Island has more than three miles of private access beaches. Pelican Beach is famous for its sunsets, and from North Beach you can watch the sunrise and spot playful dolphins on the Edisto River. Sullivan’s Island and the Isle of Palms are the two most popular public beaches. Sullivan’s Island has no lifeguards or restrooms, and all dog owners must display a local dog license, which costs $35. If you want to party, stay away from Sullivan’s Island, whose Anti-Hooting Law declares, “It shall be unlawful for any person to hoot, yell, shout, whistle or sing on the public streets.” It carries a fine of up to $500. If you want to sing a little, head for the Isle of Palms. With the prevailing winds, both beaches are a great for kiteboarding, but surfing is iffy at best. The Isle of Palms has metered parking, restrooms and lifeguards in the commercial area. You can find free parking off the streets on both islands. For party animals and surfers, Folly Beach is king. But it’s not just the historical atmosphere that attracts them. In a recent poll by Destination Weddings & Honeymoons magazine, 55 percent of respondents said they wanted “toes in the sand” at their wedding — and Charleston beautifully affords that opportunity. A Charleston wedding on or near the beach is one of the most popular ceremonies here from March through October. With planning, a Charleston beach wedding can be just as glamorous as a traditional ceremony. This is where the bride’s selection of an experienced and qualified wedding planner will pay off in huge dividends. As with most weddings in Charleston, you generally need to secure a location at least a year in advance because of high demand for the most desirable sites. If you are planning to really have the ceremony on the sand, make sure you consider the local weather conditions, and even the ebb and flow of the tides.

T O O W N A SECOND HOME. Charleston’s historic areas, world-class shopping, fine dining, sandy beaches and other amazing offerings have inspired a significant portion of the population to permanently relocate here. For those who can’t stay permanently, Charleston is the perfect place to own a second home. Two things make Charleston a good value for a second home: The seashore is exclusive and prime real estate, and there are a finite number of homes in the historic district. According to the National Association of Realtors, 1 in 10 homes purchased in 2011 was a second property. “The baby boom of their earnings... and boomers want to diversify investments,” says David Lereah, NAR’s chief economist. NEIGHBORHOODS AT A GLANCE

The first place to look for a second home is in historic downtown Charleston. Prices for houses begin around $375,000 in areas like Elliotborough and Cannonborough, and you can find one- or two-bedroom condominiums ranging from $375,000 to
