/DESIGNING PORTFOLIO JESSICA LOURENS 812945 SELECTED WORKS SEMESTER 2

INTRODUCTION

The portfolio shows the results and progresses of my projects throughout the semester. It also explains the ideas and concepts of the projects to understand how the final has formed. There are collective of model-making photos, plans and sections as they are the part of the assignments and exercises for the final project in the last week of the semester. Through those exercises, I got the base of my final project and the idea as well. Thank you and enjoying!

SITE ANALYSIS UNION LAWN

The history map shows the changes and redevelopment of Union Lawn throoughout the years. As the surrounding buildings also play the important part in order to improve the use of faciliy that Union Lawn offers. In relation to the assignment feedback, the results of my history map and analysis were good so there is no refinement that I made.

LANDFORMING CONTOURING

The concept of my landforming model was insipred by the form of Sahara desert. I realised I haven’t really though how the concept was influenced the form of my model and I started thinking about how the form of desert was influenced by the climate. Sometimes there are mountains that were sculpted by the wind and in this model, I want to reform the idea though the extrusion. The both sides of my model were different because I want to interpret how is the different between the directional of east and west winds.

SPATIAL COMPOSITION FRAME & GRID The concept of my spatial composition model was using the repreating elements to create this particular form. Using the square as the base form has driven the choice of cardboard as the material. The form itself is not entirely square as it has rotated into 45 degrees and created spikey effects. It clearly shows from the model’s photo (second photo from left). When the light hit the model, an intersting shadow has shown, which is contrasted if there is no light hitting by (first photo from left). This idea of shadow was derived from tutor’s feedback, which I considered when I took the model’s pictures.

ASSEMBLAGE ABSTRACT MELTING

The idea of my assemblage model was influenced by the smoothing technique that I have been assigned for. I interpret smoothing as the combination of bending and melting forms. My two previous models were combined into one form, while I used my landforming model as the main focus. The model has two different sides where the right side is higher position and was placed differently, the left side has vast surface and placed below the right side (first photo from left). This particular form has influenced by the melting idea. which the right side was interpreted as the solid one that has not melted and the left side was the melted part.

NARRATIVE & COLLAGE ONLINE MEETING I was assigned my idea in meeting and I want to define meeting as not only physical meeting but also online meeting. This idea was fully influenced by my experience as an international student, which I found difficult to communicate and stay close with my family and friends in home country. So through this exercise, I want to recreate the idea that it is possible for people to meet digitally. While tutor told me to started thinking how this idea can be interpreted into an architectural form. I was thinking to emphasise the idea of this digital meeting as the building’s functionality.

“To my parents who always love me unconditionally, maybe distance restricts our meeting but we still staring the same sky. To the person who I think the most, I never feel we are apart. Cause online meeting keeps us close. To my friends who know me inside out, though we are thousand miles away. Let’s achieve our dreams that we used talk about with all our might.”

SUPERIMPOSITION CURVEY PATTERN

I did refinement for the superimposition assignment as I did not meet the requirements with my previous one. I found similarities when I overlapped the historical map, my assemblage plan and the narrative collage, which is the curvey part. In this exercise, I wanted to emphasise the curvey lines so I chose black and white colour. By only using two colours, the emphasised of lines is more stand out.

FINAL PROJECT MEETING POINT IN UNION LAWN

The concept of this building was to provide a leisure space for the users to meet and hanging out phsically as well as digitally. This building is creating a warm and calm atmospheres at once, while the users enjoy the facility of open space to hanging out and eating and close space to digital meeting. The curvey form of the building gives dynamic effect to the building itself and the surrounding buildings. This building also can be used for the purpose of studying, such as if the lecturers or tutors could not come to the Uni, then th building can provide a facility for the students to video calling with the lecturers or tutors.

The site task analysis that I did in the week 4 was given results that the biggest movement of oedestrian is around the edges of Raymond Priesly and the middle path of Union Lawn. Based on the analysis, people come from different directions and will meet in the same meeting point, which is the chosen location od the building. It is helpful for the building’s functionality as it should be easily accessable for the users. As the consideration of the guest’s feedback that I got in week 12, the users that come from other surrounding buildings such as Union House and Baldwin Spencer also would has easy access to the building as there is the existing path that has already came up with the Union Lawn.

E

Functionality The building has open space and close space, which have the same function as the space for meeting. The 4 rooms are used fir the digital meeting and as it is a close space, the users can get privacy. Keeping the existing natural environments in the Union Lawn will add more warm and calm atmospheres in the surrounding of the building. It influences the building to have a moderate size. So, adding open space will create a feeling of generous spaciousness for the users while they are hanging out.
