1.0 THREE RELATIONSHIPS In relation to Earth, three architectural tectonics - below the ground, on ground and above the ground were being explored in the first three weeks of studio. This contains series of exercises that being used to explore and analyse the relation of architecture with tectonics. The aim of this exercises was to prepare the final design.
1.1 Point/Line/Plane
PRECEDENTS The two precedents above inspired me with the element of repetition. Each of lines are intersected to each others in certain points and create surfaces from it. This illustrates where the idea of my Point/Line/Plane design derived.
DESIGN CONCEPT The concept behing the Point/Line/Plane model is creating volume and movement through the repetition of triangles. Regarding to integrate well with the surroundings, there is a gradation of solid form to the sloping ones. It shows the connection to the ground. From the plan view, Point/Line/Plane can be easily identified in the model. The material - white cardboard is particulary chosen so it will leave an impression that it is part of the environment.
1.2 MASS
PRECEDENTS These two precedents show the relationship between light and shadow and how the quality of materials are being exposed by it. La Chapelle du Notre Dame du Haut by Le Cobusier
Herz Jesu church by Peter Zumthor Munich, 1966
DESIGN CONCEPT My interpretation of mass is all about solid form and simple shape, which leads to the design having gigantic cube form in the underground. By contributing light and shadow into the space, its giving an impression that the light is intentionally cutting through the solid form to create a sense of lightweighness. The darkness evokes the uncertainity of not being able to see and pontential of dangers, which will inspire people who enter the space to having doubt and deep mystery.
1.3 FRAME & INFILL
PRECEDENTS The precedents gave me inspiration oh how transparency can be showed from the solid form of frame and infill. It is interesting because the infill does not have static position, instead being rotated into the certain angles.

DESIGN CONCEPT
infill architecture is being associated with lightweightness and del interprets the infill as a temporary thing, which is flexible as its being stretched out. As the position is not entirely linear - its ain angle, it gives the sense of anti gravity. Its more showing the rth, from on the ground to the above ground. When people reach , they will experience the sense of floating and insecurity as the infill is not entirely attached to the frame - and not stable.
2.0 HERRING ISLAND
SIMPLICITY - A SECRET PAVILION The concept of this pavilion is all about simplicity and hidden space in the nature. Architecture will be the secret itself. Regarding Herring island as the site, coorporating nature is the main consideration for the design.

2.1 SITE ANALYSIS From my site visits, I was able to analyse the island by trying to find the hidden space for my chosen site. Two important things that I realised from the site analysis are Herring Island has highly densed vegetation with steep topography. Interestingly, the island is located in the middle of city so noises from highway and streets could be heard from certain locations.

2.3 CONCEPTACLE After exploring the three tectonic projects and chose the site, it led my design to begin with conceptacle model. Unexpectedly, all of my three tectonic projects have similarity, which consists of one singular element as the main concept. From here, I wanted to imply the concept into my conceptacle as well as the final design. My conceptacle model has the element of Point/ Line/Plane, which is the repetition of triangles and enclosed space that derived from Mass main concept. However, I could not coorporate the idea of Frame&Infill in here and led me to develop it further.
2.4 DESIGN DEVELOPMENT
CONCEPTACLE

SQUARE FORM
GRID & SPACE
COMBINING
Starting from the conceptacle model that consists of repetition of triangles
All of the triangles are being aparted and becomes individual triangles
The square form that derived from Frame & Infill will be coorporated
Grid will be used to create the space for the triangles arrangement
Each individual triangles will be arranged and formed based on square form and the grid arrangement

3.1 FINAL DESIGN MODEL
4.0 REFLECTION From the beginning of this subject, the three tectonic project had helped my final design by introducing the relationship of space and earth - from below the ground, on ground and above the ground. These exercises exposed me with the different approaches and perspective from architecture. For instance, I found that light is really crucial in creating atmosphere for the space. Regarding to my skills, many improvement has been made, in terms of model making, hand drawings as well as digital makings. Feedbacks that I got from my tutor, Sarah, and all of my peers had been helping me during the learning time. Both positive or negative comments helped me to acknowledge my strengths and weaknesses. Also, it became my main consideration when I wanted to improve or develop my design, especially for my final design. I found that blog images was useful for the inspiration of my design as it gave me visions on what is the theme about and what is the main concepts that need to be focused on.
