Sketch Design Development
SITTING FACTOR
We started with developing the design produced in Module 1 which focused on the personal space of the eye. The concept focused on eliminating the consideration of someone else’s perception by providing a guard against the eyes. This model took inspiration from the qualities of an expandable folder. The common point where all the lines and folds meet acts as a hinge which helps in the movement of the model. PERSONAL SPACE ANALYSIS The environment we decided to focus on is a person while giving an examination. It is a situation that people usually tend to want space in and not get invaded by other people into their space. Most of the people need to be concentrated while doing the exams so our design will be focused on creating a barrier, in order to give the sense of isolation from any distractions that can occur - such as noises or people passing by. Our personal space concentrates on the upper body of the person as mostly the person will be sitting for the entire examination.
2
It varies on how a person is sitting from straight to completely leaning on the table - which depends on the preferences so moveable design wiill be suitable.
LIGHTING FACTOR Research shows that, temperature of the room affects the concentration level during a test. The model will be developed keeping this factor in mind.
Refined Sketch Model
While experimenting with the models, we constructed our developed sketch design from folded paper. LEFT MODEL - has different sections of equal measurements. These panels will help in folding and expanding the structure model. RIGHT MODEL - has its folds which made it very easy to change the angle and shape of the structure. BOTTOM RIGHT MODEL - was inspired by historical helmets to create one of the possible structures for our model. It used the pivot property which was developed in Module 1.

MOVEMENT DETAILS
The layers of panels allow movement so that the user can control his/her exposure to the surrounding noises. However, this concept does not help in controlling the amount of light that enters the user’s personal space effeciently. This is because we thought that if the panels were to be in solid colour, the user will be in complete darkness when he/she fully closes his/her personal space. We wanted to create a personal space that has all the necessities to enhance maximum concentration on the user during an examination which are sufficient lighting and minimum noise disturbance.
After created the model, we realised the design is also adapted from the developed sketch design from Module 1, which using pivot.

FOLDABLE DETAILS
We decided to make the second skin foldable to explore the idea of folding while maintaining the overall spherical form. We have also used the inspiration from our expandable folder by connecting the panels at a common hinge. This allows the movement of the panels to open and close according to the user’s preference. PERSPECTIVE (FULLY OPENED)
PERSPECTIVE (HALFLY OPENED)
PERSPECTIVE (FULLY CLOSED)
After folding the prepared template, we noticed that the paper had started to curve up naturally at a point. We pinned the ends of the folds together to have an overall view of the ‘common hinge’ effect. The pin succesfully secures the ends of the folds together. At this stage, we are left with either using pins or joining the ends of the paper together in our final design model.

Precedent Research Veasyble by GAIA
Concept: Transformability, Collapsibility
The VEASYBLE project aims to transform wearable objects into an intimate space. This is done by using the property of expansion. This project used origami techniques to create a pattern that would create volume as well make folding easy. This inspiration of this project was taken from the ruffs in the earlier period. The aim was to create a dominant aesthetic of privacy.

Huyghe + Le Corbusier Puppet Theatre By MOS Concept: Interlock
This structure was built with 500 unique polycarbonate panels, diamond shaped which interlock and create a rigid structure. The interlocking feature draws our attention which can be used in our model.
Precedent applied to design Our precedent models inspired us to use origami techniques that will add volume and provide aid in the easy expansion of the model.
DESIGN 1 We came across various origami techniques, including creating diamond folds This folding technique allowed easy opening and closing of the structure.
DESIGN 3 Another technique we came across was the V Pleat fold. DESIGN 2 This fold was taken from the accordian octagon ball making procedure. This designed if developed really allows movement along the curves. This can be used in the bending of our model

Design development - Version #1
PLAN
ELEVATION 1
From the precedent study, we adapted the idea of origami folding in our semi-circle form. We experimented with different origami folding patterns and ended up with the triangle pattern as it is easier to be folded.
ELEVATION 2
10
The form is not entirely semi-circle because we eliminate the back part as it does not correspond with the personal space that we wanted.

FOLDABLE DETAILS
PERSPECTIVE (FULLY OPENED)
PERSPECTIVE (FULLY CLOSED) Apart the adaptation of origami folding pattern from precedent study, the concept of foldable is also being applied that becomes the main focus of the panel and folding system. We also tried to experiment the foldable part with physical model as finally we discovered how the object could be folded by applying the folded part in the middle of the triangle pattern. However, we still considered the lighting as the form was totally closed without openings so it was kind of dark being inside.

Design development - Version #2
PLAN PERSPECTIVE Royal Melbourne Exhibition is being discovered as the location for research. It has big window on each edges, though sometimes the sunlight could directly hit the person who is sitting.
DETAILS OF PATTERN
12
Different sizes of pattern is being adapted by the amount of lighting that can get through the object as well as control it. As the size is getting bigger at the front, it becomes the main focus while on those exact location, lights hit the object.
ELEVATION 1
LIGHTING METHODOLOGY While we experimented with different techniques and materials, we decided to stick up with paper as the main materials of the object. Paper itself has small amound of thickness as it would be useful for the lighting purposes - the lights can get through but still can be controlled without being excessived. The hole on the corner of the triangle pattern is intentionally designed to support how lighting can get through the object. ELEVATION 2

Prototype
As the actual object has bigger size, we only created one layer of patterns to give sense of scale. The prototype was made from paper as it gives the object more flexibility and slightly transparency. The side of the object will need stability so temporary joints would be needed when its being fully opened.

Testing Effects
Because we use thinner paper material, the lights can come through the object easily, though we still got the barrier effect that we want.
