ABOUT MALARIA Malaria is a life-threatening blood disease caused by a parasite that is transmitted to humans by the Anopheles mosquito. Malaria is a preventable and treatable disease. The best ways to prevent it are the use of insecticide-treated nets and vector control. If malaria is diagnosed and treated early on, the infection can be reduced, which in turn lowers the risk of complications and death. Symptoms of malaria are similar to the flu, such as fever, headaches, nausea, and vomiting. According to the World Health Organization, there were 219 million cases of malaria and an estimated 660,000 deaths in 2010. 90% of malarial cases come from Africa. The six countries with the highest number of cases are Nigeria, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Tanzania, Uganda, Mozambique, and the Ivory Coast. These countries account for 103 million or 47% of cases. Lack of resources and political instability can prevent the building of solid malaria control programs.

DRUG RESISTANCE AND THE COUNTERFEIT PROBLEM Malaria parasites can be cleared from the body but there is no one drug that will treat all strains of malaria. Malaria can adapt to treatments and become drug-resistant. The type of drugs and length of treatment depend on the type of malaria, where the person was infected, their age, whether they are pregnant, and how sick they are.
200,000 people a year die because ineffective, fake, and substandard malaria drugs don’t clear their systems of the parasite. When the malaria parasite is exposed to an insufficient dose of a drug (due to misdiagnosis, counterfeits, or lack of education), drug resistance develops. And that appears to be happening in Southeast Asia and Africa with one of the most powerful anti-malarials, artemisinin. Many pills simply consist of chalk. Anti-malarials are among the most popular drugs to fake. In Myanmar, malaria drugs and many other medications are sold openly without a prescription in markets and small shops.

MY DEMOGRAPHIC 1. Parents of young children. The 65% of cases are in children under 5 because of their weak immune systems. The most afflicted live in remote, rural areas and have limited access to diagnostic testing health facilities. The first time they get sick they go to a private clinic or small pharmacy and often unknowingly buy counterfeit drugs. 2. Aid workers, clinics, and pharmacies in the western region of Ghana (native language: Akan). Ghana has the lowest reported usage of insecticide treated nets and half of the anti-malarial drugs in Ghana are fake. Pharmacies need to be able to supply genuine medicine.
MY GOALS 1. Help the affected and parents of children self-diagnose and find out the next steps for further diagnosis and treatment. Educate people about the dangers of counterfeit drugs. 2. Make aid workers, clinics, and owners of small mom-and-pop pharmacies aware of the dangers of counterfeit drugs and to not prescribe or sell them to patients by partnering with trusted manufacturers. They should also be educated on how to test drugs and their packaging for authenticity. 5

CONCEPT STATEMENT The GYE DIIE TRUST™ self-diagnosis kit is designed for parents and people who might have malaria and live too far away from clinics to test their children or themselves. The kit is made of fabric and clearly labels each instrument and the test stick identifies the type of malaria to prevent misdiagnosis (which contributes to drug resistance). The kit is enclosed in a reusable filtered water bottle because access to clean water is a chronic problem in Africa. Another part of the GYE DIIE TRUST™ system is a kit for

pharmacies and clinics to use to test the authenticity of drugs. Patients and customers can bring in medicine to be tested by aid workers and pharmacists; if the drugs are counterfeit they can be exchanged for real medicine. Included in the kit are posters, a

INITIAL PHYSICAL MOCKUPS
I chose to use paperboard to package the reusable water bottle to provide structure while shipping. The sleeve has information about malaria in case families are uninformed. The diagnosis kit inside is made of sturdy canvas and can be tied closed and stored when not needed. 14
PHARMACY TUBE MOCKUP
PHARMACY POSTER
The drug verification kit is stored inside a cardboard tube and is meant to be displayed inside a pharmacy. Also included are bright posters meant to inform pharmacy customers about the importance of using genuine medication. 15

NON-PROFIT DISTRIBUTION The self-diagnosis kits would be distributed by aid workers in collaboration with local community leaders, not politicians, because they are closer to the people. One or two kits would be distributed per family, depending on the number of family members. The pharmacy kits would be distributed by local leaders and aid workers from the World Health Organization, who will ask clinic and pharmacy owners if they want to participate in the program. They will be educated on the drug verification system and the Guilin Pharmaceutical will work with them to provide authentic medicines and collect counterfeit drugs for proper incineration.
