THE TRIBES INFLUENCE

THE SLOW FASHION MOVEMENT For Conscientious By Jessica Parker

Status

used to be about the possession of certain objects. In a generation where people have so much, status has become less about ‘what we have’ and much more about ‘who we are’: namely, more ethical, creative, connected, tasteful than the masses. Looking forward into 2017, there seems to be a shift towards ethical production. To avoid this mystic of recycled clothing that our generation have been brought up to assume is the entirety of the word ‘ethical’. Brands use materials which are more durable to suggest a product will last a long time rather than the simplicity of high street branded fast fashion garments. This reflects on ‘who we are’ when we buy garments as we know we are doing better and being safer to our planet. Slow fashion dives into a whole new way of consuming garments and exploring alternative production methods as well as simply recycling clothing. It isn’t your typical seasonal fashion trend, it is a movement that is gaining momentum in a fastpaced fashion world.

‘...to avoid the mystic of recycled clothing.’ Vintage stores are the backbone of the ethical clothing movement but to combat the fast fashion generation a new step is needed to bridge the divide between these two shoppers. A typical thrift store shopper seeks a certain image of fashion revival and continuation. However, those who seek slow fashion are looking for more products with a current feel to them. They seek timeless classics; therefore, slow fashion designers consider a need for creativity and tasteful garments which when well executed can cause a larger price tag to adorn their clothing.

and concerning nature of some factory conditions questions the sustainability of how some garments are made. To allow us to combat the generation before us it is our duty to look at clothing and question its need. We shop in a way that we wear an outfit just once and throw it away. However, in the long run this will become more expensive than buying one garment that will last a life time. Seek a curated closet that includes key pieces that represent you as an individual and your style will remain eternal.

This ideal doesn’t appeal to those of us who are used to a low cost, mass produced wardrobe. But at current it is all that we can do to combat the fast fashion industry. The fashion industry contributes heavily to the depletion of fossil fuels in terms of transportation as well as the ever-growing concerns within the cotton business.
