LA NUEVA RUTA ENTRE MÉRIDA Y TORONTO
Rosas & Xocolate Boutique Hotel y su propietario, Carol Kolozs, recibieron la distinción internacional “ESR” en el marco del VIII Encuentro Latinoamericano de Empresas Socialmente Responsables realizado en mayo pasado en la Ciudad de México.
Un reciente hallazgo se produjo a principios de agosto debajo de la Pirámide de Kukulcán en el sitio arqueológico de Chichén Itzá. Un cenote con una profundidad de aproximadamente 20 metros debajo de la pirámide fue descubierto por un grupo de científicos de la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México.
La aerolínea canadiense WestJet ha anunciado que a partir del 15 de diciembre de este año comenzará a operar la ruta semanal entre Mérida y Toronto. Esta es una gran noticia para la comunidad canadiense que abarca aproximadamente entre mil personas que habitan en Mérida y la costa norte de Yucatán. El boleto redondo estará disponible desde 470 dólares americanos netos.

CENOTE DISCOVERED BELOW CHICHEN ITZA A recent discovery was made in early August under the Pyramid of Kukulcan in the archaeological site of Chichen Itza. A cenote with a depth of about 20 meters below the pyramid, was discovered by a group of scientists from the National Autonomous University of Mexico.
THE NEW ROUTE BETWEEN MERIDA AND TORONTO The Canadian airline WestJet has announced that as from December 15th of this year, it will begin operating a weekly route between Merida and Toronto. This is great news for the Canadian community that are about a thousand people living in Merida and the north coast of Yucatan. The round trip ticket is available from $470 US net.

A partir de agosto, la reserva ecológica El Corchito, ubicada en Progreso contará con un parador turístico para ofrecer una mejor experiencia a los visitantes nacionales y extranjeros. De esta forma, los viajeros podrán cruzar en lancha a la reserva y admirar la belleza de los cenotes y la fauna que habita en este santuario ecológico.
Desde el mes de julio, TAR Aerolíneas inauguró su vuelo Mérida – Tuxtla Gutiérrez, con una frecuencia de cuatro días a la semana desde $860 pesos el viaje sencillo y el vuelo tiene una duración de 1 hora y 20 minutos. El viaje es realizado en jets con capacidad para 50 pasajeros.

NEW ECOTOURISM CENTER IN CORCHITO As of August, the ecological reserve The Corchito, located in Progreso will have a tourist center to offer a better experience for domestic and foreign visitors. l plan maestro y la visión estuvo a cargo de un selecto grupo de arquitectos y diseñadores mexicanos reconocidos internacionalmente que dieron vida y exclusividad al Hotel Boutique Rosas & Xocolate, que se ha convertido en un punto de referencia en la ciudad. Los espacios se maximizaron con la complicidad de estos profesionales artistas y el dueño, Sr. Carol Kolozs Fischer: “Con una decisiva pincelada de creatividad, romance e imaginación que lograron hacer posible el concepto que tenía en mente”, comentó. Fusionar el estilo tradicional usando elementos y materiales distintivos de la cultura colonial yucateca de principios del siglo XX con influencia europea y la infinita cultura maya, con el diseño contemporáneo y diseños modernos y vanguardistas creando una armonía ecléctica que estimula a todos los gustos, para lograr una amalgama perfecta entre lo artesanal y las tendencias modernas en cuanto a un hotel de lujo. Se produjeron réplicas de pisos para formar tapetes, fueron creadas tapicerías que combinaran con los impresionantes espacios, restauración de antigüedades y creación de piezas decorativas, muebles de maderas finas, jardines de agua que junto con la instalación de equipamientos de alta tecnología así como el diseño de luminarias exaltan el efecto general. La utilización de la técnica maya milenaria del “Chukum”, que al cortar la corteza de este árbol y hervirla en agua por un determinado tiempo, produce una tinta que al mezclarla con cemento blanco, permite darle un tratamiento a las paredes, que es único y duradero, siendo orgánico tiene su propia personalidad, otorgando a cada espacio una belleza única y mostrando el amor por una cultura de siglos.

The master plan and vision was conducted by a select group of Mexican architects and designers well known internationally, who gave life and exclusivity to the Hotel Boutique Rosas & Xocolate, that has become a reference point in the city. The spaces were maximized with the complicity of these professional artists and the owner, Mr. Carol Kolozs Fischer: “With a decisive touch of creativity, romance and imagination that managed to make the concept I had in mind possible” he said. To merge the traditional style using elements and distinctive materials of the Yucatecan colonial culture
of the early twentieth century with European influence and the endless Mayan culture; with the contemporary design, and modern & trend settings designs creating an eclectic harmony that stimulates all tastes to achieve a perfect blend between traditional and modern trends in a luxury hotel. Replicas of floors were produced to form mats, tapestries were created that combined with the impressive spaces, antique restoration and creation of decorative pieces, furniture of fine wood, water gardens along with the
installation of high technology equipment and design Luminaire exalt the overall effect. The use of the ancient Mayan technique of “Chukum”; that when cutting the bark of this tree and boiling it in water for a certain time, produces an ink that when mixed with white cement, provides a treatment to the walls, is unique and ever lasting, being organic it takes an own personality giving each space a unique beauty and showing the love for a culture of centuries.

Paseo de Montejo EL CORAZÓN DE MÉRIDA THE HEART OF MERIDA
Los domingos se vive un gran ambiente festivo y familiar en la avenida más importante de Mérida, el Paseo de Montejo. Se cierra el tránsito hasta el Centro para recibir a los ciclistas de la ciudad, disfrutar el desayuno en lugares como Rosas & Xocolate acompañado de jazz, admirar el mercado de arte, entre muchas otras actividades recreativas que grupos de amigos, familias e inclusive las mascotas, gozan con mucha alegría.

l elegante y arbolado Paseo de Montejo con sus jardines y las elegantes mansiones y casas construidas a principios del presente siglo, cuya arquitectura fue de marcada influencia europea –en especial de Francia e Italia-, es para muchos, el Paseo de la Reforma de la Ciudad de México. Representa la historia de Mérida y de Yucatán, en los últimos años se ha comercializado y muchas de las históricas mansiones del siglo XIX que bordean la avenida han sido transformadas en bancos, restaurantes, clubes nocturnos, hoteles, tiendas, edificios de oficinas y museos, sin perder su belleza original. Situado al noreste de la plaza central y arquitectónicamente parecida a la Habana, Cuba, la zona que rodea al Paseo de Montejo fue desarrollada en la época de esplendor y prosperidad económica en Yucatán, durante el auge de la industria del henequén (la producción de hilo sisal a partir de una resistente fibra hecha de la planta del agave) a finales del siglo XIX y principios del siglo XX, cuando los dueños –hacendados- de las plantaciones que deseaban mudarse del centro histórico de la ciudad, construyeron magníficas mansiones y palacios a lo largo de esta extensión de la avenida.

The elegant tree-lined Paseo de Montejo with its gardens and the elegant mansions and houses built at the beginning of this century, whose architecture was strong European influenced -especially from France and Italy, is for many, the Paseo de la Reforma of Mexico City. Represents the history of Merida and the Yucatan, in recent years it has commercialized and many of the historic mansions of the nineteenth century that lineup the avenue have been transformed into banks, restaurants, nightclubs, hotels, shops, office buildings and museums, without losing its original beauty. Located northeast of the central square and architecturally similar to Havana, Cuba, the area around the Paseo de Montejo was developed in the era of splendor and economic prosperity in Yucatán, during the boom of the henequen industry (production of yarn sisal from a resistant fiber made from the agave plant) in the late nineteenth century and early twentieth century when landowners, plantation owners, who wanted to move from the historic downtown area, built magnificent mansions and palaces along this length of the avenue.
El Paseo de Montejo alberga el Monumento de la Bandera, el Museo Regional de Antropología de Mérida, que se encuentra dentro del Palacio Cantón, la Quinta Montes Molina y varias grandes mansiones que se encuentran a lo largo de la avenida que se pueden explorar fácilmente a pie o mediante un recorrido en calesa (carruaje tirado por caballos) a los lugares más emblemáticos de la ciudad. Cada año, el 6 de enero Mérida celebra su fundación. La celebración se lleva a cabo durante el Festival de la Ciudad en el día de los Reyes Magos. Para celebrar, la ciudad acoge su festival anual de la Rosca de Reyes Más Grande del Sureste a lo largo del Paseo de Montejo.
The Paseo de Montejo houses the Monument to the Flag, the Regional Museum of Anthropology in Merida located inside the Canton Palace, the Quinta Montes Molina and several large mansions that are along the avenue that can be easily explored on foot or by horse-drawn carriage rides onto the most emblematic places of the city. Every year on January 6th, Merida celebrates its foundation. The celebration takes place during the Festival City on the day of the three wise men. To celebrate, the city hosts its annual festival of the Largest “Rosca de Reyes” of the south east along the Paseo de Montejo.

ORQUESTA SINFÓNICA DE YUCATÁN Con tan solo 11 años la Orquesta Sinfónica de Yucatán (OSY) se ha consolidado como una de las mejores sinfónicas de México. Ha presentado 24 temporadas que han enamorado cada vez a más personas, residentes, turistas, intelectuales del arte y asiduos asistentes cada viernes y domingo de función. Este año tuvo su gran debut presentándose con éxito en el Palacio de Bellas Artes de la Ciudad de México, bajo la batuta de su Director Titular, Juan Carlos Lomónaco y al piano Jorge Federico Osorio.

La llegada del aclamado director de orquesta mexicano Juan Carlos Lomónaco a la Orquesta Sinfónica de Yucatán fue en el 2004, gracias a una invitación como director huésped. Cuenta que desde el principio hubo un acercamiento con personas que buscaban un cambio en la Orquesta y desde ahí le tuvo mucha fe al proyecto que lo vio como un incipiente que podía crecer mucho, “es una tierra muy hermosa y un teatro muy bueno. Hubo una química con la OSY, los músicos confiaban en mí y yo en ellos, había una muy buena comunicación artística. Por esas razones en 2009, decidí aceptar ser el Director Titular”, expresó. A partir de su llegada, se creó el Fideicomiso Garante de la Orquesta Sinfónica de Yucatán (FIGAROSY), se logró conformar un equipo y una estructura administrativa y de difusión, entre otros logros por mencionar.

La tercera y quizás la más importante, fue en 2015 presentándose en el Palacio de Bellas Artes y en la Sala Nezahualcóyotl, “nos abrieron las puertas porque ya hay un gran prestigio de Yucatán” comentó.

R&X: ¿Cómo se compone la OSY, de dónde vienen estos músicos? JC: Ahora estamos muy equilibrados, le hemos dado más oportunidad a los mexicanos que ya forman la mitad de la Sinfónica, e inclusive uno de ellos es yucateco. La otra mitad se compone de once distintas nacionalidades de países como Canadá, Estados Unidos, España, Francia, Inglaterra, Italia, Bulgaria, Polonia y Rusia. R&X: ¿Cuál o cuáles han sido los mejores momentos que has vivido en la OSY? JC: En 11 años la Orquesta ha logrado posicionarse como una de las mejores de México junto con la Orquesta Sinfónica de Xalapa y la Sinfónica Nacional de México.

R&X: ¿Por qué ha crecido tanto la OSY? JC: Son cuatro factores principales los que han permitido este crecimiento; algo que hace única a la Orquesta Sinfónica de Yucatán es el balance que existe entre el patronato y el gobierno, quienes sustentan el proyecto y han logrado que la orquesta vaya aumente su nivel. Otro factor es el público, las salas se llenan en cada función y en Mérida ya existe un orgullo por la Orquesta, es un fenómeno social que no vemos en otras partes, la sociedad se ha involucrado en gran medida porque la cultura yucateca tiene alta sensibilidad a la música y al arte. El tercer factor es la calidad de los músicos que gozan de gran nivel, son artistas muy preparados que han perfeccionado su técnica y por último, la programación en la que cada temporada se ha logrado traer a los mejores artistas del mundo.
R&X: ¿Cuál ha sido el mayor reto? JC: Lograr que artistas que tocan en Viena, Nueva York y ciudades destacadas internacionalmente en el arte de la música vengan a Mérida, esto ha sido posible gracias a que se está corriendo la voz de que Yucatán es una tierra privilegiada y también gracias a que se cuenta con apoyos importantes como el de Rosas y Xocolate para recibir a los mejores artistas de talla mundial. Otro reto muy satisfactorio fue la grabación del disco para conmemorar el décimo aniversario de la OSY, nuestra meta es grabar más y presentarnos en el extranjero. R&X: ¿Qué está pendiente para la OSY? JC: Falta crecer a la Orquesta, actualmente consta de 65 músicos y una orquesta requiere crecer el número a 80 aproximadamente. Inicialmente comenzó con un poco más de 50 músicos y en los últimos años hemos logrado aumentarla. R&X: ¿Cuáles son los planes a futuro de la Orquesta Sinfónica de Yucatán? JC: El camino ya está muy claro y es mirar hacia arriba. Mi ambición más importante es hacer una gira internacional.
R&X: What or which have been the best times you’ve lived in the YSO? JC: In 11 years the Orchestra has established itself as one of the best in Mexico, along with the Xalapa Symphony Orchestra and the National Symphony of Mexico. R&X: Why has the YSO grown so much? JC: It’s four major factors that have enabled this growth; something that makes unique the Yucatan Symphony Orchestra is the balance between patronage and government who support the project and have made the orchestra to increase its level. Another factor is the public, rooms are filled in every performance and in Mérida there is already a pride for the Orchestra, is a social phenomenon that we don´t see elsewhere, the society has been involved mainly because the Yucatecan culture has high music and art sensitivity. The third factor, is the quality of the musicians who have a high standard, they are highly trained artists who have perfected their technique, and finally the programming in every season that has managed to bring the best artists in the world.
R&X: What has been the biggest challenge? JC: To achieve that artists who perform in Vienna, New York and cities internationally renowned in the art of music come to Merida, this has been possible because the word has been spreading that Yucatan is a privileged land and also thanks to the important support like Rosas and Xocolate to receive best world-class artists. Another very satisfying challenge was the recording to commemorate the tenth anniversary of the YSO, our goal is to record more and present ourselves abroad. R&X: What is pending for YSO? JC: Still grow the Orchestra, currently it consists of 65 musicians and an orchestra requires to increase the number to 80 approximately. Initially it started with a little more than 50 musicians and over the years we have managed to increase it. R&X: What are the future plans of the Yucatan Symphony Orchestra? JC: The way is now clear and is looking upward. My main ambition is to make an international tour.

RALF WALTER
PINTOR ALEMÁN, YUCATECO POR DECISIÓN GERMAN PAINTER, YUCATECAN BY DECISION Originario de Alemania, Ralf Walter estudió arquitectura en Darmstadt y pintura en Berlín. Ha viajado por África, Asia y Europa. En 1978 llega a Yucatán e instala su taller de pintura, a partir de 1999 da clases de pintura en la UADY y desde 2005 en la ESAY. Actualmente cuenta con más de 40 exposiciones en México y Alemania. Ralf Walter tiene una carrera digna de admirar construida paso a paso con pies de viajero y pensamiento libre. Después de haber visitado África Occidental, Ralf se animó a elaborar un libro que reúne una colección de imágenes, que retratan la forma de vivir de esa nación. El viaje fue en su opinión “tan provechoso”, que surgió suficiente material para el libro, al que bautizó “Mali, eine Reise nach Timbuktu”, cuyos ejemplares se pueden adquirir tanto en Alemania, como en el Museo MACAY de Mérida. Él tenía tanto interés en el desierto que eligió diciembre para realizar su viaje a Malí a fin de que el calor fuera más soportable en esa temporada y pudiera caminar por las regiones para conocerlas bien.

Actualmente se encuentra trabajando en los preparativos sobre la ciudad de Nueva York. Desde hace más de 30 años, Ralf radica en Yucatán, exactamente en el puerto de Chicxulub, lugar del que se enamoró la primera vez que lo visitó. Fue invitado a participar en el libro “Diez pintores abstractos en Yucatán”; para él, un pintor nunca se debe definir a sí mismo, no obstante, los críticos y el público lo señalan como un pintor de estilo abstracto. De igual forma se ha publicado en otras obras como: “Panorámica Plástica Yucatanense”, “En voz de los pintores” y “Luz y color”. En el hotel Rosas & Xocolate se pueden admirar cuadros de Ralf que decoran algunos muros de la propiedad, éstos fueron seleccionados por los arquitectos que colaboraron en la creación del hotel. Su última exposición fue en octubre del 2014 en el Olimpo de Mérida; además del catálogo se hizo un video, en el cual Carol Kolozs, propietario de Rosas & Xocolate colaboró. “Él prácticamente es mi art dealer, haciendo los contactos con los compradores de mis cuadros”, expresó en entrevista Ralf.

In 1978 he arrives to Yucatan and installs its paint shop, since 1999 he teaches painting at the UADY and since 2005 in the ESAY. He currently has more than 40 exhibitions in Mexico and Germany. Ralf Walter has a career worthy of admiring, constructed step by step with travelers feet and free thought. After visiting West Africa, Ralf encouraged himself to elaborate a book, containing a collection of images that portray the way of life of that nation. The trip in his opinion was “so helpful”, which brought trough enough material for the book, which he named “Mali, eine Reise nach Timbuktu”, copies of which are available in Germany, as in the Museum Macay of Merida. He had so much interest in the desert that he chose December to make his trip to Mali so that the heat was more bearable in that season and he could walk regions to know them well. He is currently working on preparations about the City of New York. Since more than 30 years, Ralf resides in Yucatan, exactly in the port of Chicxulub, place where he fell in love the first time he visited. He was invited to participate in the book “Ten abstract painters in Yucatan”; for him, a painter should never define himself, however, critics and the public mark him as a painter of abstract style. Same way it has been published in other works such as “Plastic Yucatenense Overview”, “In voice of painters” and “Light and Color”. In the hotel Rosas & Xocolate you can admire paintings of Ralf that decorate some walls of the property, these were selected by architects who collaborated in the creation of the hotel. His last exhibition was in October 2014 in the Olimpo of Merida; Apart from the Catalogue, a video was made also, in which Carol Kolozs, owner of Rosas & Xocolate collaborated. “He’s practically my art dealer, making contacts with the buyers of my paintings,” Ralf said in an interview.

MARCELA DÍAZ APASIONADA DE LA ESCULTURA TEXTIL PASSIONATE OF THE TEXTILE SCULPTURE Con Mención Honorífica en Escultura, en la III Bienal Nacional de Artes Visuales de Yucatán del 2006, presentación de diez exposiciones individuales y más de cuarenta colectivas, la artista plástica yucateca Marcela Díaz se ha presentado en diferentes foros locales y nacionales, como es el caso de la Bienal de La Habana, uno de los foros más importantes a nivel internacional como escenario para un artista. Estudió Diseño y Escultura en 2001 con la Maestra checa Gerda Gruber en la Fundación Gruber Jez en Cholul, Yucatán. Cursó talleres de fundición de bronce y arte con los Maestros Jorge González y Edgardo Ganado y se inició como escultora en 2005 con su exposición individual: Conversaciones en La Galería (Mérida). A partir de ahí se ha presentado en diversos estados del país como Campeche, Monterrey, Guanajuato, Cancún, Distrito Federal, Zacatecas y a nivel internacional ha estado en Cuba, Estados Unidos, Italia y Francia.
With honorific mention in sculpture, at the Third National Biennial of Visual Arts Yucatan 2006, presentation of ten individual exhibitions and more than forty collectives, the Yucatecan plastic artist Marcela Diaz has performed in various local and national forums, such as the Havana Biennial, one of the most important international forums as a setting for an artist. She studied Design and Sculpture in 2001 with the Czech Master Gerda Gruber at the Gruber Jez Foundation in Cholul, Yucatán. She attended workshops of bronze foundry and art and with Masters, Jorge Gonzalez and Edgardo Ganado; and initiated as a sculptor in 2005 with his solo exhibition: Gallery Conversations (Merida). From there on, she has performed in various states such as Campeche, Monterrey, Guanajuato, Cancun, Mexico City, Zacatecas and internationally has been in Cuba, United States, Italy and France.

La llegada del icónico Rosas & Xocolate a Mérida tuvo un impulso muy fuerte en el tema culinario y de hotel boutique. Fue un parteaguas traer un producto de alta sofisticación a la mejor avenida de la ciudad y que logró motivar a otros inversionistas a renovar antiguas casonas y convertirlas en hoteles y restaurantes del concepto boutique. Antes de su inauguración en 2009, no existía una variedad gastronómica en Mérida, la mayoría de los restaurantes eran cadenas de comida rápida o sus menús por lo general eran muy clásicos, sin innovaciones. Por ello, el propietario Carol Kolozs propuso junto con el chef Mario Espinosa un concepto auténtico basándose en una cocina fusión de autor con ingredientes locales. Todos los platillos tienen mínimo un ingrediente de la región con el objetivo de apoyar a agricultores locales y preservar los ingredientes tradicionales como la cebollita de Ixil.
The arrival of the iconic Rosas & Xocolate to Merida had a very strong impulse in the culinary and boutique hotel theme. It was a breakthrough to bring a highly sophisticated product to the best avenue of the city and that managed to motivate other investors to renovate old houses and turn them into hotel and restaurants concept boutique. Before its inauguration in 2009, there was no gastronomic variety in Merida, most of the restaurants were fast food chains or their menus were usually very classical, without innovations. Therefore, the owner Carol Kolozs proposed along with the chef Mario Espinosa a true concept based on a fusion of signature cuisine with local ingredients. All dishes have at least an ingredient of the region with the aim to support local farmers and preserve traditional ingredients like the small onion of Ixil.
