STUDIO: ARCH 475 PROJECT LENGTH: 14 WEEKS LOCATION: CHAMPAIGN, IL PARKLAND COLLEGE, Willard Airport

CHALLENGE:

SCHEMATIC DESIGN AND DEVELOPMENT OF A MEDIUM-SCALE PUBLIC BIULDING EMPHASIZING THE INTEGRATION OF THE BASIC ELEMENTS OF A BUILDING: MATERIALS, DETAILS, STRUCTURE, ENCLOSURE, TECHNOLOGY, PROGRAM, LIFE SAFETY, ENERGY PERFORMANCE, AND UNIVERSAL DESIGN.

TO PROVIDE: PRACTICAL AND THEORETICAL TRAINING FOR FUTURE ENGINEERS AND MAINTENENCE PERSONNEL AT NEW HANGAR AND CLASSROOM FACILITY.

Using airplane aerodynamics to create form

THE GROUND AT WILLARD AIRPORT IS FLAT and TRUE TO THE THE TYPICAL MIDWESTERN LANDSCAPE. THE SKY, HOWEVER, IS ALIVE WITH AIR TRAFFIC. THE DESIGN IS DRIVEN BY ALL OF THE MOVEMENT TAKING PLACE OVERHEAD, AND WITHIN THE PLANE ITSELF. THE ROOF BECOMES THE MAJOR COMPONENT OF THE DESIGN. ITS SINGLE GRAND SWEEP MIMICS THE FLAT, EXPANSIVE LAND AND THE AERPDYNAMICS OF THE AIRPLACE. THE ORANGE ROOF SERVES AS A WAY TO GUIDE THE EYE OF ONLOOKERS UP TOWARDS THE SKY, AND AS A LANDMARK WHEN SEEN FROM ABOVE.

RIBBON WINDOWS ARE LOCATED AT EYE AND CLERESTORY LEVEL IN ORDER TO MAXIMIZE VIEWS AND DAYLIGHTING, WHILE MINIMIZING SOLAR HEAT GAIN/LOSS WHERE GLAZING IS UNNECESSARY. THE MONOLITHIC 18” CONCRETE FACADE PROVIDES A THERMAL BARRIER AND A DEEP SETTING FOR THE LOUVERS. THE LOUVERS PROVIDE SHADE AS THEIR SATIN FINISH METALLIC SURFACE ALLOWS LIGHT TO REFLECT OFF OF THEM INTO THE SPACE WHILE MINIMIZING GLARE. WINDOW SEGMENTS BETWEEN LOUVERS ARE OPERABLE TO ALLOW FOR NATURAL VENTILATION. THE HANGAR IS COMPLETELY RELIANT UPON NATURAL VENTILATION. THE FANS ON THE CEILING DRAW COOL AIR IN THROUGH THE WINDOWS, AS HOT AIR EXITS THROUGH THE OPERABLE LOUVERS IN THE ROOF.

STUDIO: ARCH 374 PROJECT LENGTH: 8 WEEKS LOCATION: CHICAGO, IL CHALLENGE: SCHEMATIC DESIGN

AND DEVELOPMENT OF A MID-RISE, MIXED-USE BUILDING IN DOWNTOWN CHICAGO. RESIDENTIAL, COMMERCIAL, AND PARKING PROGRAMS ARE TO BE INCLUDED.

CONCEPT: A “NEIGHBORGOOD” WITHIN THE CITY OF CHICAGO. THIS PROJECT IS DESIGNED TO ENHANCE THE “NEIGHBORHOOD EFFECT” THAT IS ALREADY PREVALENT IN THE AREA, PROVIDING ITS MEMBERS WITH A SENSE OF COMMUNITY AND IDENTITY. THE DESIGN IS GOVERENED BY PROGRAM, IN A “FORM FOLLOWS FUNCTION” MANNER SO THAT THE DIFFERENCES IN PROGRAM ON THE INTERIOR ARE EXPLOITED AND VISUALIZED ON THE EXTERIOR. CIRCULATION WAS CHOSEN AS THE FOCAL PROGRAMMATICAL ASPECT BECAUSE THAT IS GENERALLY WHERE THE MOST SOCIAL INTERACTION OCCURS. THE VERTICAL CIRCULATION IS ACCENTUATED WITH A BRIGHTLY COLORED TOWER EMPHASIZING BOTH THE HEIGHT OF THE BUILDING, EMBEDDING IT INTO THE CITY’S SKYLINE, AND THE INTIMATE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN PERSONAL IDENTITY WITHIN THE LARGE CITY.

THE RESIDENTIAL UNITS ARE SEPARATED INTO THREE ZONES, WHICH DIVIDE THE BUILDING INTO SMALLER “NEIGHBORHOODS”. IN BETWEEN THESE ARE COMMON AREAS, WHERE ALL OF THE RESIDENTS ARE BROUGHT TOGETHER TO INTERACT WITH EACH OTHER AND WITH THE SURROUNDING COMMUNITY. THE COMMON AREAS ARE COMPRISED OF RETAIL SPACES ON THE GROUND LEVEL, AND A RECREATION CENTER ON LEVELS 16 AND 17. THE REC CENTER IS AVAILABLE TO THE PUBLIC AS WELL AS THE BUILDING’S RESIDENTS, BUT IS ACCESSED VIA KEY FOR SECURITY PURPOSES.

13

MATERIALS WERE CHOSEN AND DESIGNED TO ENHANCE THE DIFFERENT PROGRAM FEATURES, WHILE STILL ADHERING TO THE AESTHETIC QUALITIES CHARACTERISTIC TO CHICAGO. THE STRUCTURAL COLUMNS AND EXTENDED FLOOR SLABS ARE EXPOSED CONCRETE, AND THE FACADE IS MOSTLY TREATED GLAZING. THE FROSTED GLASS COVERING THE PARKING GARAGE BECOMES ILLUMINATED AT NIGHT, AND THE EXPOSED STRUCTURAL CROSS BRACES, TYPICAL OF CHICAGO STRUCTURES, CAN BE SEEN AS SHADOW. THE LOUVERS ARE SIMPLY A FIVE FOOT EXTENSION OF THE FLOOR SLABS. THIS DEPTH PROVIDES SHADE AGAINST THE HIGH SUMMER SUN AND ALLOWS THE LOW WINTER SUN TO PENETRATE THE UNITS.

THE ARRANGEMENT OF THE RESIDENTIAL TOWERS AND THE FLOOR PLANS WITHIN THEM IS DESIGNED TO FRAME THE VIEWS PROVIDED BY SURROUNDING FAMOUS CHICAGO ARCHITECTURE. THE WILLIS TOWER IS SEEN TO THE SOUTH, AND THE HANCOCK BUILDING TO THE EAST. LAKE MICHIGAN WILL BE VISIBLE TO THE EAST ON THE UPPER LEVELS. THE ONE BEDROOM AND SPACIOUS TWO BEDROOM UNITS FACE SOUTH WHILE THE LESS EXPENSIVE COUNTERPARTS HAVE NORTH-FACING WINDOWS. THE LUXURIOUS TWO-LEVEL THREE BEDROOM UNITS ARE LOCATED IN THE EASTERN TOWER WHERE THE EASTERN CURTAIN WALL EXPOSES THE MORNING, LESS INTENSE SUN, AS WELL AS A VIEW OF THE HANCOCK BUILDING.

STUDIO: ARCH 374 PROJECT LENGTH: 4WEEKS. GROUP PROJECT (4)

LOCATION: CHAMPAIGN, IL CHALLENGE: TO DESIGN AND DEVELOP A LOW-MID RISE MIXED-USE BUILDING AND INTEGRATE IT INTO THE EXISTING COMMUNITY. REVIVE THE “WALKING CITY” CULTURE THAT THE DOWNTOWN AREA POSSESSED PRE-SUBURBIA. USE THE SITE CONTEXT AND THE CITY’S HISTORY TO DEVELOP A CONCEPT FROM WHICH THE DESIGN IS DERIVED.

TO PROVIDE: FLEXIBLE COMMERCIAL SPACES, WITH RESIDENTIAL UNITS ABOVE.

IN AN ATTEMPT TO REVIVE THE DOWNTOWN AREA OF CHAMPAIGN, IL, THIS DESIGN MERGES THE SUCCESSFUL ASPECTS OF THE HISTORICAL “WALKING CITY” WITH THE CONTEMPORARY SOCIETAL NEEDS OF TODAY.

THE CITY’S PLANS FOR THE FUTURE INCLUDE A PARKING GARAGE AND GREEN SPACE TO THE NORTH OF THE SITE. TO COMPLEMENT THOSE FEATURES, THIS DESIGN OFFERS GROCERY AND ENTERTAINMENT AMMENITIES FOR BOTH THE RESIDENTS, AND THE PUBLIC COMMUNITY AS WELL. ALL OF THESE FEATURES PROMOTE THE “WALKING CITY” IDEAL THAT THE AREA SEEKS.

THE FACADE IS MADE OF ROUGHCUT CONCRETE, PROVIDING TEXURE. THE SLIDING PANELS IN FRONT OF THE BALCONIES MOVE IN ORDER TO GIVE THE RESIDENT CONTROL OVER DAYLIGHTING AND PRIVACY. THIS CREATES SEGMENTATION OF THE FACADE THAT INCLUDES DOUBLE-LAYER SCREEN, SINGLE-LAYER SCREEN, AND COMPLETE TRANSPARENCY. THE MANIPULATION OF THE FACADE THROUGH SOLIDS VERSUS VOIDS OF TEXTURE AND LIGHT REPLICATE THE HISTORY OF DOWNTOWN’S STRUGGLE TO PROVIDE A CENTRAL URBAN LANDSCAPE. THE ATRIUM USES THE SAME TACTIC BY PROVIDING A PHYSIAL BARRIER BETWEEN PUBLIC AND PRIVATE SPACES, BUT AT THE SAME TIME ALLOWS VISUAL TRANSPARENCY THROUGH THE GLAZING.

THE CONCEPTS OF TRANSPARENCY AND MOVEMENT ARE CARRIED THROUGH TO THE INDIVIDUAL APARTMENT UNITS ALSO. PHYSICAL BARRIERS ARE PLACED BETWEEN PUBLIC AND PRIVATE SPACES, WHILE ONLY PHYSICAL BARRIERS ARE PLACED BETWEEN PUBLIC SPACES, GIVING THE USER CONTROL OVER PRIVACY AND LIGHT IN THEIR OWN UNIT.

STUDIO: ARCH 373 PROJECT LENGTH: 8 WEEKS LOCATION: OAKWOOD, IL KICKAPOO STATE PARK

CHALLENGE: TO DESIGN AN EDUCATIONAL FACILITY AROUND THE HISTORY OF KICKAPOO STATE PARK. THE DESIGN IS TO BE BASED ON A PERSONAL INTERPRETATION AND DEFINITION OF THE WORD “RECLAMATION” AND WHAT IT MEANS TO RECLAIM. TO PROVIDE: SPACE.

CLASSROOMS, OFFICES, AND GALLERY

THIS DEFINITION WAS CHOSEN BECAUSE OF ITS STRONG, FORCEFUL CONNOTATION. IT BRINGS UP THE QUESTION OF WHAT IT MEANS TO POSSESS AN OBJECT, OR A SPACE. I CHOSE TO DEFINE POSSESSION AS HAVING CONTROL OVER THAT PARTICULAR SPACE. THE SHAPE OF THIS BUILDING IS BASED ON THE CONCEPT OF THE RECLMATION OF SPACE.

THE PROCESS BEGINS WHEN THE VIEWER COMMENCES THE PATH OF APPROACH. THERE IS A DIRECT LINE OF VIEW FROM THE PATH TO THE LAKE. AS THE USER ENTER THE LOBBY, WITH ITS HIGH CEILINGS AND OPEN LAYOUT, THEY ARE IN CONTROL. AS THE ENTER THE HALLWAY, HOWEVER, THE USER LOSES NOT ONLY THE VIEW OF THE LAKE, BUT ALSO CONTROL OF THE SPACE. THERE IS ONLY ONE DIRECTION TO PROCEED AS THE CEILINGS LOWER AND LEAD THE USER TO A MORE CONFINED SPACE AT THE END OF THE CORRIDOR. THE USER THEN TURNS THE CORNER AND IS ABLE TO RECLAIM POSSESSION OF THE SPACE WHICH HAS AN INCREDIBLY HIGH CEILING AND NO VISUAL OR PHYSICAL BARRIERS. THE VIEW OF THE LAKE THROUGH THE CURTAIN WALL IS UNOBSTRUCTED.

VETERAN’S MEMORIAL THE KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS IN LINDALE, TX ARE IN THE PROCESS OF HAVING A VETERANS MEMORIAL BUILT IN THE COMMUNITY. MY GRANDFATHER IS ONE OF THE LEAD CORDINATORS, AND HE ASKED ME TO AID IN THE DESIGN AND PRESENTATION OF THE MEMORIAL. THE DESIGN IS TO BE 30’x30’ AND INCLUDE ROOM FOR SEATING. BRICKS ENGRAVED BY SPONSORS WILL BE LAID INTO THE GROUND. THE PLAQUE IS TO STAND AT ONE END, WITH SPACE FOR THREE FLAGPOLES BEHIND IT. A CIRCULAR ARRANGMENT WAS USED TO ALLOW FOR INTEGRATION BETWEEN ALL PARTS OF THE MEMORIAL. THE INSCRIBED BRICK PAVERS FOLLOW THE SHAPE OF THE ARC, BUT DO NOT CROSS IN FRONT OF THE PLAQUE. THIS ALSO DRAWS THE EYE TOWARDS TO MEMORIAL INSCRIPTION. THE BENCHES ARE PLACED ON THE PERIMETER TO KEEP THE FOCUS INWARD.
