t is my privilege to thank you for all the ways your support benefits Northland College and its Sigurd Olson Environmental Institute. Your gifts allow Northland to meet its mission of integrating liberal arts studies with an environmental emphasis.

This fiscal year, your gifts enabled us to meet the financial needs of our students—99 percent of them receive some form of financial aid. Of these students, 28 percent are low-income Pell Grant recipients, compared to 18 percent at many University of Wisconsin four-year institutions. In a time of recession, we’ve also been able to keep tuition competitive while maintaining a sound academic program. None of this is possible without you: our alumni, parents, friends, faculty, staff, corporations, foundations, and organizations listed in our 2009-2010 Northland College Honor Roll of Donors. Whether you gave $1 or $100,000, we are grateful to each of you for your loyal support. We are also grateful to former Interim President James L. Peterson, who served Northland College this fiscal year during a time of presidential transition. He kept our ship moving full-steam ahead and helped attract an innovative and exciting new president to take the helm. Your belief in this small college on a big lake that is making a world of difference in a world that needs us was one of the magnets that drew me here.

Former Interim President James L. Peterson was another magnet. It takes an exceptional leader to build a strong bridge from the past to the future, and Jim Peterson is one such leader. I will be forever grateful for his insights and assistance in helping set Northland College up for our future successes. The nature of Northland College students was yet another strong magnet that drew me here. They are interesting and interested, and they fill up our classrooms and social spaces in refreshing and energetic ways. You can rest assured that the gifts you make have direct benefits for them, to beautify our campus, provide scholarships, and advance the curriculum and co-curriculum. The Northland curriculum is particularly exciting. It’s an innovative program of study that is simply not available at other institutions. The curriculum is structured and classes are taught in ways that put complex issues and problems at the center of the learning. This approach equips our students to be problem solvers and sets them up for success in their careers. Gift of property from Wife of former Trustee Raises scholarship Funds

arion McIver was a tireless advocate for higher education. He believed in its ability to transform young lives and provide opportunities to students who wouldn’t otherwise have them. This is why his wife, Jean McIver Ollis, gifted the couple’s lake home to Northland College. “Marion was a long-time supporter of education at Northland,” said Ollis. “He showed that support as a trustee and through all his scholarship contributions over the years. By giving the property to the College, I can ensure that his legacy of support continues, providing opportunities for students for decades to come.” The property, which the McIvers enjoyed for more than 50 years, and which is divided into three parcels, includes 15.2 acres, lakefront on Lake Namakagon near Cable, Wisconsin, a primary residence, and two small cottages. Two of the three parcels have been sold, netting significant scholarship support. Twenty percent of these proceeds will fund scholarships in the immediate future, and 80 percent is being used to establish the Marion C. McIver Endowed Scholarship Fund to benefit students in perpetuity. “Jean’s property is an amazing gift to the College,” said Marc Barbeau, vice president for institutional advancement. “Gifts like this make a huge difference now and far into the future, and when the third prop-

erty is sold, and as the economy continues to recover, students will realize even greater benefits.” The endowment’s namesake, Marion C. McIver, served on the Northland College Board of Trustees from 1948 to 1957 and represented the 10th district of Wisconsin as the Republican Delegate to the Republican National Convention in 1960. McIver co-owned and co-operated several businesses in northern Wisconsin, including Primax Corporation, which quarried black gabbro in the Mellen area, and the Penokee Veneer Company, which supplied the plywood for Howard Hughes’s experimental aircraft, the “Spruce Goose.” McIver also worked extensively to support higher education throughout Wisconsin. In cooperation with Father Edward J. O’Donnell, former president of Marquette University, and other members of the academic community, he laid the groundwork for the Wisconsin Association of Independent Colleges and Universities (WAICU). Founded in 1961, the organization is comprised of twenty independent colleges and universities in Wisconsin and works to advance their interests and development.

Heritage Society

Established to recognize those individuals who have made estate provisions for Northland College and its Sigurd Olson Environmental Institute, Heritage Society members are able to perpetually express their affection for the college. Members have the opportunity to plan the specific applications of their gifts with faculty and staff leaders. Most estate gifts are in the form of bequests. Increasingly, however, donors are discovering the advantage of life income arrangements such as charitable remainder trusts and gift annuities. Group or personal life insurance policies are also significant gift properties.
