How #Glyphosate works for us all The withdrawal of approval for glyphosate would entail serious consequences for farmers and our environment

-4% 1

Returning to mechanical weed control would impact on lapwing, partridge and skylark nests destroying eggs and young chicks

4

49% more labour would be needed per hectare each year

2

Using glyphosate allows conservation tillage which protects soils. There are 53% more earthworms in no plough systems of cultivation

5

Glyphosate protects 20% of winter wheat and winter oilseed rape yield

8

25% increase in arable crop GHG emissions if glyphosate were no longer available

3

Reintroducing ploughing into non-tillage fields can reduce soil organic matter by 4% in the first 1-6 months

6

Glyphosate use allows 15% more rapeseed and 17% more wheat to be produced

9

Without glyphosate 12 million tonnes of CO2e would be added to our atmosphere (equivalent to emissions from at least 2.5 million cars)

3.4 times the size of London

7

Losing glyphosate would mean 546,000 hectares more land would be needed to grow the same amount of food

AHDB Beef & Lamb is looking for research and industry collaborators to form a five-year Beef Knowledge Partnership focusing on key areas of beef production.

A

AHDB Beef & Lamb is looking for research and industry collaborators to form a five-year Beef Knowledge Partnership focusing on key areas of beef production. The aim of the £1.5 million project is to devise and implement a programme of research, development and knowledge exchange in two key areas: improving youngstock health and reducing losses due to poor health and disease during the production cycle improving efficiency in the use of feed and forages, including updating nutrition standards for beef cattle. The AHDB Beef & Lamb programme will deliver focused, commercially-relevant, innovative research. The project will

also collect information on new technical developments, improved practices and emerging ideas from across the world. An intensive programme of knowledge exchange will accelerate uptake by farmers, in order to prepare for the challenges facing beef producers in the years ahead. Dr Mary Vickers, AHDB Beef & Lamb senior scientist, said: “Mortality and production loss due to disease have a significant impact on the bottom line, and reduce our competitiveness internationally. Increasing pressure to minimise antibiotic use across the livestock industry means that it is more important than ever to focus on proactive cattle health management. “Food and forage use efficiency is another key factor in sustaining a

profitable beef system. Research on beef ration formulation is now 30 years old, so there is a real need for updating through new research. “A partnership approach provides a flexible means for researchers and the beef industry to work collaboratively. “The five-year term of the agreement means the work being undertaken can respond dynamically to new developments or emerging science.” The Knowledge Partnership will be able to expand on existing AHDB collaborations and will be encouraged to access funding from other sources, such as UK Research Councils, Innovate UK and the industry, to add value to levy spend. Further information on the call and the application process can be found on the AHDB Beef & Lamb website.

Brexit: NOAH’s priorities for the UK animal medicines sector

N

OAH has set out the priorities needed to deliver a thriving animal health sector following the UK’s exit from the EU.

Commenting after its Board meeting on 1 November, NOAH Chair Cat Sayer said: “The UK must continue to be a vibrant and innovative animal health market, providing opportunities for animal medicines businesses to thrive. “We are in a strong position in the UK to be a global centre of excellence for animal medicines, supporting both innovative product developments and a regulatory model to benefit both local and international trade. We need to ensure that our industry’s needs and priorities are included in discussions on how the UK exit develops,” she said. Following the UK’s exit from the EU, NOAH stresses the need to ensure that measures are in place to facilitate trade and innovation in the animal medicines sector. Future UK regulation

of veterinary medicines must incentivise product research and development – an environment where companies are encouraged to do business in the UK. “The health and welfare of British animals, as well as our public health and food safety need to be safeguarded – our vets and animal keepers need to continue to have access to a wide range of appropriate animal medicines. “And we must not forget our people. The animal medicines industry has many highly skilled roles. Businesses will continue to need to be able to recruit the best,” said Ms Sayer. NOAH has formed a Brexit Task Force from members of its Board, covering the breadth of the UK animal medicines sector which is working to identify the risks but also the opportunities offered by the UK post EU Exit for its members. It includes both UK based and global company heads. The Task Force will represent members’ views and drive policy forward at this crucial time. NOAH is collaborating with partners

6 | Working Farmer | www.workingfarmer.co.uk

across the animal health sector, including veterinary, human health, agricultural and pets and engaging with relevant government departments to ensure that veterinary medicines are included in future government industrial strategy. “In the UK consumers both encourage and expect high standards of animal welfare in food production and pet owners also want prompt and effective care. UK veterinary surgeons and animal owners need access to a full range of medicines and vaccines to protect animal welfare by preventing disease and treating illness effectively,” added Cat.

Animax Veterinary technology

nimax launches first sheep bolus with highest trace elements levels

Three of the most important trace elements for sheep can now be delivered in a single bolus thanks to a new product developed by leading UK bolus technology company, Animax Ltd. Tracesure 3-in-1 Sheep & Lamb is the latest addition to Animax’s range of boluses. The company’s veterinary director, Dr Elizabeth Berry, says the product is not only suitable for maintaining normal health, vitality and fertility of adult sheep and rams but can be used on replacement ewe lambs or ram lambs. “Cobalt, selenium and iodine can be given in this combined bolus which has 185mg of cobalt, 100mg of selenium and 660mg of iodine, higher levels than any other bolus on the market!’’ Dr Berry explains. The need for supplementation because of lack of these elements in the diet can be common and necessary with variables including soil type, level of rainfall, grass varieties, forage type and grassland management. Dr Berry says pregnant and growing sheep have a higher need for these trace elements. “They may not obtain enough from their normal diet,’’ she warns. “Tracesure 3-in-1 Sheep & Lamb contains optimum amounts to cover demands during growth, pregnancy and lactation and will provide these for a period of approximately six months.’’

At Troedyrharn, Brecon, fat lamb producer Rob Stephens says the benefits of the bolus is visual and important for flock condition – it is that daily release; he can see the advantages by looking at his flock.

There is also the added advantage that 4g of copper oxide is contained in Tracesure Sheep Traffic Lights, a separate capsule for supplementation in cases of low copper in the diet.

He fattens 1500 store lambs annually. “We buy lean lambs but we don’t quite know their history so we bolus them, it does a phenomenal job.’’

The newly-launched Tracesure 3-in-1 Sheep & Lamb is generating strong sales. Dr Berry says in addition to optimum trace element supplementation, labour efficiency is a key attraction.

He boluses ewes at tupping and at scanning, with the benefit of the application at scanning passing to lambs in the womb and later, through their mother’s milk.

“One bolus, utilising Animax’s unique leaching bolus technology, does the job.’’

LET’S TALK ANTIBIOTICS Fifteen senior medics call on gov to tackle 'routine misuse' of antibiotics in farming sector

S

ignatories to the letter, which was published today in The Telegraph to coincide with World Antibiotic Awareness Week, include the President of the Royal Society of Medicine - Babulal Sethia, the President of the British Medical Association Professor Pali Hungin, and the Presidents of ten Royal Colleges and Societies. Coordinated by the Alliance to Save our Antibiotics and Medact, the letter states: “We urge the government to immediately introduce a UK-wide ban on the routine preventative mass medication of animals, and to urgently curb farm use of the ‘critically important’ antibiotics.” Use of antibiotics in intensively farmed livestock, particularly of pigs and poultry, accounts for nearly 90% of all farm antibiotic use in the UK. It remains legal in the EU to routinely administer antibiotics to whole groups of livestock before any disease has been diagnosed within the group.

Signatories to the letter calling on the farming industry to do more to stop over-reliance on antibiotics include the President of the Royal Society of Medicine

Professor Maureen Baker, Chair of the Royal College of General Practitioners, said: “GPs and our teams are doing an excellent job of reducing prescriptions for antibiotics, with the latest NHS figures showing a 2.6m decrease in UK general practice last year. But it’s not just the healthcare sector that has responsibility for curbing resistance to antibiotics; the agriculture sector must also play its part. If antibiotics continue to be given to livestock when they are not needed it will put patients at risk all over the world. We support the recommendations outlined in this letter and would urge the Secretaries of State to take them into serious consideration.” 'Clear need for domestic policies which ensure that antibiotics are used judiciously in human and animal medicine'

'Clear need for domestic policies which ensure that antibiotics are used judiciously in human and animal medicine''Clear need for domestic

policies which ensure that antibiotics are used judiciously in human and animal medicine' Banning of routine antibiotic use in farming In March 2016, the European Parliament voted for an EU-wide ban to all routine antibiotic use in farming. Forthcoming negotiations between the Council of Ministers, the European Parliament and the European Commission will consider this proposal. Letter signatories urge the UK government to take a strong stand in these discussions, and to ensure that, post-Brexit, such measures are enshrined in UK law. Professor Jane Dacre, President of the Royal College of Physicians said:

“In the light of the UK’s forthcoming exit from the EU, there is a clear need for unambiguous domestic policies which ensure that antibiotics are used judiciously in human and animal medicine. The use of important antibiotics to routinely mass medicate groups of livestock does not constitute judicious use, and should have no place in any antibiotic-reduction strategy for the UK.” MPs have also recently spoken out on this issue. Following the revelations in September of multi-drug resistant E.coli on supermarket meat, 57 MPs from across the political parties have signed an Early Day Motion calling on supermarkets to ban the routine preventative use of antibiotics in their supply chains. However, only Waitrose has so far clarified that it prohibits such practices. Professor John Middleton, President of the Faculty of Public Health concluded: “The evidence linking the overuse of antibiotics in farming and resistance in human bacterial infections is extremely compelling. It is clear that more needs to be done to limit veterinary prescribing. The government must now listen to, and act on, the concerns of the medical community - and place public health at the heart of considerations around the future UK farm antibiotic-use policy.” 'There is a real risk that, if we do nothing, modern medicine as we know it will be undermined,' said Leadsom'There is a real risk that, if we do nothing, modern medicine as we know it will be undermined,' said Leadsom 'Modern medicine as we know it will be undermined' Andrea Leadsom, Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs and Jeremy Hunt, the Health Secretary, said: "There is a real risk that, if we do nothing, modern medicine as we know it will be undermined." individual sectors to ensure that appropriate sector specific reduction targets are agreed by 2017 so that future reductions are greatest where there is most scope. Encouraging best practice and responsible use of antibiotics, which safeguard animal health and welfare, is a must," the government report said. Earlier this year, Dairy UK launched a package of new measures for the dairy industry as part of its ongoing commitment to the prudent use of antibiotics. The aim is to deliver "safe and wholesome" dairy products to consumers across the UK, according to the trade association. The UN's Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) has also pledged to help countries develop strategies for tackling the spread of antimicrobial resistance in their food supply chains.

The misuse of drugs, associated with the emergence and spread of antimicrobialresistant micro-organisms, places everyone at great risk, the FAO has said. And British pig producers are making progress in the sector's commitment to record and control the use of antibiotics in the industry, data shows. In less than two months, antibiotic data for over 1.2m pigs has already been contributed by pig producers to the British pig industry's new on-line medicine book. "The levy-funded on-line electronic medicine book is the most important strand of the Stewardship Programme," said Dr Georgina Crayford, who leads the National Pig Association's recently-launched Pig Industry Antibiotic Stewardship Programme. The RSPCA has banned the Bedfordshire man from keeping farm animals for life

A

BEDFORDSHIRE man has been disqualified from keeping farm animals for life after around 100 cows were found in his barns and fields - many of them emaciated, dying or dead. The RSPCA was called in January concerning the cows - all British Whites - kept at Green End Farm, Green Lane, Swineshead, Bedfordshire. When inspectors arrived with a specialist vet, they found five of the cows dead and another nine in such a bad state of health that the vet said they had to be put to sleep to prevent further suffering. A further 85 cows were taken into RSPCA care. Andrew Peter Leishman, 69, of the above address, appeared at Luton Magistrates Court on Monday and pleaded guilty to offences under the Animal Welfare Act. He admitted causing unnecessary suffering to a number of the cattle, by failing to provide adequate nutrition and not providing a suitable environment for their needs. Leishman was given a life disqualification on keeping all farm animals, including equines, and was ordered to pay £94,375 costs to the RSPCA as well as attend 240 hours of community service. RSPCA Chief Inspector Mark Thompson said: “I will never forget the sight of so many cows lying there dead, or dying, or

so ill that they would have gone that way had we not been called to the rescue when we were. It was truly shocking. “There were many animals lying there so still I thought that I thought they were dead at first. These were effectively starved to death. They just had not been given the food they needed to be healthy and survive. “They had also been kept in filthy, completely unsuitable conditions - with deep litter all around them and in some cases up to their bellies. One poor bull in

particular was surrounded by so much filth he couldn’t move. “What made this case worse for me is that this defendant was very knowledgeable about this breed of cows - and knew what they needed, and yet failed miserably to provide it.” Very sadly, around 20 of the cows taken into RSPCA care were so unwell that they did not survive, despite being under constant veterinary care. The remaining 66 have now been signed over to the charity’s care and will be rehomed.

CCIR trials indicate early success

T

Trials of the Collection and Communication of Inspection Results (CCIR) postmortem condition cards and training of meat inspectors will commence in late September to help standardise and streamline the quality of data. Emma Bailey-Beech, AHDB Pork food safety project manager, said Karro Food Group in Malton was one of the five processing

plants involved in the wider trial.

she adds.

“Working as part of the CCIR team, consisting of FSA, AHDB, BMPA and the other major UK pork processors, Karro, as one of the UK’s major slaughter sites, saw the benefit in the change from paper-based recording to the ‘one vision’ approach,” says Emma.

“Karro has reported that good progress has been made and endorses the new system, acknowledging that it has great potential in supplying pig producers with accurate realtime information concerning the health and welfare of pigs delivered to site.”

“They were keen to get involved in the testing phase and are using additional screens on the line to record the new condensed list of offal and carcase conditions,”

Emma says that, following the trials, all the FSA inspectors will be trained with the finalised conditions cards. “The effectiveness of both the

condition cards and training package will be validated with an online verification assessment in late September, this will be measured against an already completed baseline assessment carried out at Karro. RSPCA’s Newport Adoption Centre celebrating third birthday

R

SPCA Cymru’s Newport Adoption Centre, based inside the Pets at Home superstore on Docks Way, is celebrating the third anniversary of its opening. Since 2013, the in-store centre, the first of its kind in Wales, has found new homes for 292 animals – 288 cats, two dogs and two rabbits. Able to house up to six cats at one time within the centre, and working with a large network of foster carers to support more cats, the site also provides advice on responsible pet ownership and offers an opportunity for prospective owners to meet animals in a relaxed setting. It was opened as part of a partnership between the RSPCA and Pets at Home, with advice and adoption centres opened in stores across England and Wales to re-home animals, many of whom have suffered from cruelty or neglect. Cats that the Newport-based

centre has successfully re-homed include Gwen, who was found by herself in the South Wales area in March. She was estimated to be only five-days-old, and needed to be hand reared by a foster carer. After much care and attention, she was made available for rehoming and is doing very well with her new family. Thomas, too, came into the RSPCA’s care in May after being abandoned when his previous owners moved house and left him behind. The centre worked with the cat to build his confidence, and help him gain weight, before he found his forever home. To mark the anniversary, the Adoption Centre will be having a third birthday party on 15 November, between 5pm and 8pm, within the store on Mendalgief Retail Park. Members of the public are welcome to pop along, with a cake sale taking place and – of course – opportunities to hear more about the cats currently up for adoption at the centre.

Jacquie Dove, RSPCA Cymru rehoming co-ordinator, said: “Having found new homes for almost 300 pets since our opening, the centre looks forward to celebrating with the public our achievements since 2013. “Our small team of friendly staff are always on hand to help people make the right choices about pets – from welfare advice, to finding the right new furry addition to a family. “Sadly, there are so many companion animals in need of a second chance – and many of those we see have been subject

to cruelty or neglect. Our small team of staff looks forward to continuing to work with these animals, as well as the public, to find them suitable new homes.” Usual opening hours at the centre are 10.30am until 6pm, on Monday to Friday, 10.30am until 5pm on Saturday, and 10.30am until 3.30pm on Sunday. It is a separate facility to the RSPCA Newport Animal Centre, on Hartridge Farm Road. If you would like to help the RSPCA, you can give £3 now by texting HELP to 78866 (text costs £3 + one standard network rate message). We are a charity and rely on public donations to exist.

NOAH welcomes protection of antibiotics for animals and people OAH Chief Executive Dawn Howard says: “We endorse the proposal for incentives to develop innovative new treatments and better diagnostics: these must include the veterinary sector, so that animal medicines are available to treat the diseases that vets and farmers encounter. Improving the availability and uptake of vaccines, which is also proposed, can reduce the need for antibiotics. Veterinary surgeons need access to a range of medicines, including antibiotics, in order to treat the conditions and species under their care and support the high standards of animal welfare our society expects. “The Report’s call for improved surveillance will build on work already being undertaken within the different livestock sectors, for example in the UK poultry and pig sectors. Targets to reduce antibiotic use must be based on an understanding of why and where

antibiotics are currently used, and we welcome the Report’s suggestion that careful consideration must be given to how any target setting will be done. Once the facts have been established, resources can then be focussed on areas where change is most needed to reduce any unnecessary use.

changes need to be given a realistic timeframe in order that animal welfare is not compromised – something the report itself acknowledges,” she adds.

“It is important to remember that in the UK – and indeed throughout the EU, veterinary antibiotics are only available on veterinary prescription and have been banned as growth promoters since 2006,” she adds.

“We also fully support the Report’s call for a global public awareness campaign of this ‘One Health’ issue involving both human and animal health to improve understanding and compliance. This is a global report for a global problem, with practical recommendations and calls to action, both on the international stage and here in the UK.”

The Report recommends restrictions on certain antibiotics for veterinary use. “NOAH believes that any such decisions must be based on independent regulatory officials’ expert opinions and must follow the agreed regulatory process – such as the recent EMA (European Medicines Agency) re-evaluation of the veterinary use of colistin,” Dawn Howard says. “Any

Dawn Howard concludes: “The UK animal medicines sector looks forward to its role in implementing the Report’s recommendations by being part of the collaboration between UK government and industry, to develop practical proposals so that antibiotics remain effective to protect the health of people and animals into the future.”

Maximise value of forthcoming silage cuts Livestock farmers facing reduced yields of first cut grass silage after this year’s cold spring should look to maximise the value of forthcoming cuts, in order to avoid shortfalls and the need to buy in extra feed this winter, a silage expert is urging.

A

ccording to Derek Nelson, product manager for Ecosyl, although improved weather conditions in the run up to harvest did help grass growth, this year’s first cut grass silage yields still appear to be light. In addition, he says sugar levels may be down in areas where sunlight levels were low. “Now that first cut is harvested, make sure you assess the quantity and quality of what you have in the clamp,” urges Mr Nelson. “Low-yielding first cuts will mean farmers have to rely more heavily on feeding later silage cuts this winter. For example, second cut may need to be fed to milking cows, and not just to youngstock. So getting good yields of later cuts will be particularly important.

higher in second cut, he says the downside is that the higher UV light levels tend to kill off naturally-occurring bacteria on grass, including beneficial ones that carry out fermentation. “To maximise the quantity and quality of second and subsequent silage cuts, it will be important to follow the same best practice techniques as when producing first cut,” Mr Nelson adds. “For example, these include cutting at the correct time, avoiding excess wilting, good clamp management with effective sealing, and maximising the numbers of beneficial bacteria available for fermentation by using a proven silage inoculant. By improving fermentation efficiency, a quality lactic acid bacteria inoculant can

reduce dry matter losses – with around 95% dry matter recovery achieved in grass silage trials. “But it can also boost quality – with digestibility improved by an average of 3 D units in trials compared with untreated silage. What is also relevant is that the largest digestibility benefits were seen with lower digestibility crops and at higher dry matter levels, he adds, a category that second cut is likely to fall into. In addition, Mr Nelson urges farmers to be careful with the cutting date of second cut, since it goes to head much quicker than first cut, which will reduce digestibility. For each 1% fall in digestibility, he says milk yield decreases by 0.37 litres per cow per day.

“Alternatively, where harvesting of first cut silage was delayed in an effort to boost yield, that could have led to reduced quality, since digestibility falls by 0.5% per day after heading. So farmers may need to concentrate on maximising the quality of future cuts as well.” Typically, Mr Nelson says digestibility already tends to be lower in second cut silage than first cut – and a reduction of 3.6 D units will require an extra 1.5 kg of concentrate to be fed to a dairy cow per day. And although brighter growing conditions mean sugars are normally

The Importance of Sprayer Testing Everyone will agree that accurate application of pesticides is not only desirable but essential whether for the environment, the consumer or the grower

A

ccurate and targeted use of pesticides is all part of modern agriculture. That’s why back in the mid 90’s the Chemical Application members of the Agricultural Engineers Association (AEA) devised a test for application machinery to make sure it was working as intended. In the early years of 2000 this test became the National Sprayer Testing Scheme as one of the main pillars of the Voluntary Initiative. NSTS now tests around 16,500 machines annually with the test also satisfying the requirements of the Sustainable Use Directive (SUD), which requires that all pesticide application equipment, sprayers, slug pellet applicators, granular applicators etc., need to be tested by 26th November 2016 and at regular intervals thereafter. NSTS is an accepted part of arable agriculture and requirement of the major crop assurance schemes and

supermarket protocols, requiring that farmers and growers have their sprayers inspected annually. This requirement continues with one of the annual tests satisfying the SUD requirements. The NSTS is available through a network of test centres who have qualified examiners available to inspect and confirm the equipment is of the standard required. The test is usually carried out at the machine owner’s premises and at a mutually agreed time. The examiner will charge for the inspection, the cost is commercial at the point of use. Additionally machine owners are free to use their nearest or preferred test centre. The operator or owner of the machine can prepare the sprayer for the test using a test sheet available from the NSTS website. Owners and operators are encouraged to take part in the test and will receive three NRoSO points for doing so. As confirmation of the result of the test the examiner will apply a pass sticker

to the machine and a copy of the test report form will be sent to the owner. Other copies are returned to NSTS Administration where the information is retained on a database of all tested machines. This information is available to Crop Assurance Certification Bodies and others for verification purposes. With the continued threat of more pesticides being lost, now is the time to contribute to accurate and targeted application procedures, NSTS testing helps achieve that. Having a NSTS test will also satisfy the Sustainable Use Directive which requires all sprayers to be tested by 26th November 2016. Find out more by visiting the NSTS website www.nsts.org.uk Duncan Russell NSTS Manager October 2016
