Collaboration is key to improving the nation's flood resilience, says NFU The recent flooding of 1,100 hectares of farmland in Lincolnshire, the equivalent to 1,300 football pitches, has highlighted the real need for the Environment Agency to work much closer with other organisations to ensure future incidents like this can be prevented.

T

hat’s according to the NFU which has responded to the EA’s draft national Flood and Coastal Erosion Risk Management (FCERM) strategy to tackle flooding and coastal change. NFU flood management policy adviser Mhari Barnes said: “It’s clear that here in the UK the issue of water in general, and particularly flood and coastal erosion, has not been given the priority it should have in the past. “The NFU recently visited the Netherlands where we saw firsthand how it is possible to be far

more ambitious and innovative when it comes to flood and coastal erosion risk management. But this is only possible if there is a willingness among all those with a vested interest to work together. “We have been arguing for more collaboration, early engagement and support in protecting rural communities and agricultural land which has been massively undervalued for too long. The EA strategy needs to be clear about the importance of these areas, not just to farmers, but to all those with an interest in the environment and our food

security. “The farming industry is often at the mercy of extreme and changeable weather. The severe floods experienced in recent weeks around the Wainfleet breach in Lincolnshire, which left valuable crops under water, has demonstrated why necessary long-term strategic plans must be in place to tackle the nation’s flood resilience. “We need to see the EA working in partnership with farmers and landowners and other organisations to address this critically important issue.”

Urgent action needed to support British beef sector, says NFU

With beef farmers experiencing markets at a three-year low, NFU Vice President Stuart Roberts is calling for urgent and united action to reestablish sustainable returns.

M

r Roberts said that at such a critical time for the British beef industry, farmers, processors, retailers, Defra, and the Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board (AHDB) need to work together to find solutions to this emerging crisis. He said: “There is a real danger that without urgent action the supply chain and Government will see a bad situation rapidly worsen in the weeks ahead. “Beef farmers want to see retailers and processors promote Red Tractor assured, great British beef through in-store promotion backed by clear labelling on pack and merchandising to help shoppers make informed choices about the origin of their purchases. “There is real concern that with over 70% of cattle

being processed by five or six companies who supply 10 retailers, this lack of competition allows value to be taken out of the market. We ask that farmers receive a fair and sustainable share of the retail value, which is not the case at present. “Livestock producers also expect AHDB to prioritise its resources to support promotional efforts at home and abroad to increase consumption of British Red Tractor beef, highlighting the differential standards of UK production. I am also calling on AHDB to establish the impact of a 31 October Brexit date on overseas buyer confidence and knock-on effects to the farm gate price and adapt marketing appropriately. “Defra also has important questions to answer. It’s several weeks since the EU approved the Irish Government’s €100M beef

crisis support package. Livestock farmers want to know, what assessment has Defra made of this package? And with the majority of Irish beef entering the UK market, has this subsidy the potential to distort the UK beef price? “Policies must be put in place now that will drive productivity and improve margins for those who keep beef cows and to help secure a better future for the British beef sector. “We all have a part to play in highlighting and showcasing quality Red Tractor assured, great British beef; the important role of beef production in enhancing the environment and our iconic landscape, the industry’s animal welfare credentials and red meat’s role as part of a healthy, balanced diet.”

Farmers to spread the word about child safety on farm

F

armers across the country are working to reduce farm accidents and with a specific focus this summer to keep children safe on farm. Over the next few months, farmers are joining with the Farm Safety Partnership (FSP) to implement and share practical measures that help keep their children safe on farm, as well as members of the public who pass through. NFU Vice President and chairman of the FSP Stuart Roberts said: “Children are an integral part of family run farm businesses. But we must

remember that farms are first and foremost a working environment and, like any job, we should try to separate our work from our home life. “Farms are not playgrounds. All children need is somewhere secure to play that is away from the work place, and if they do need to enter your place of work adult supervision is essential. Such boundaries become even more important during the summer holidays when children are at home. “The FSP is today sharing guidance and information on the law regarding child safety. I urge all farmers to get involved and

help spread the word about how we can keep our children safe and happy on farm.” Visit the NFU’s Farm Safety Hub for more information and guidance on child safety.

NFU transforms London school into farm Children at an urban primary school in the centre of London are delving into life as a farmer today as they ditch the textbooks and don their wellies to take part in a host of exciting farming activities.

A

s part of eight-year-old Afeefa Haroon’s grand prize for winning the NFU’s Farmvention competition this year, her school has undergone a transformation from urban primary school to rural farm, where children are learning about what it takes to be a British farmer and a custodian of the countryside. Some of the activities include: ·Ronald Ross ‘farm’ with sheep, goats and ponies ·Flying drones ·Bug hotels ·Pizza and yogurt making ·Hatching chicks ·Potato harvesting The competition, which taught Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths through the lens of food and farming, was a huge success, receiving over 1,000 entries from schools all over the country. It is now being rolled out for a second year.

This is all part of the NFU’s aim to reconnect children with the countryside and rural life, develop their understanding of agriculture and provide the information needed so they can maintain a healthy, balanced diet in the future. NFU President Minette Batters said: “It has been great to see so many children here today getting excited about food and farming, asking about where the food they love comes from and how farmers produce it. “That’s what our Farmvention competition is all about – bridging the gap between the next generation, especially those in urban areas, and the food on their plates. “The education system has such an important role to play in opening children’s minds to new opportunities. The success of this year’s Farmvention competition shows how well the food and farming context fits within STEM

learning, and offers children the chance to explore and experience a completely new area that they otherwise might miss.” Ronald Ross Headteacher Abby Brady said: “Farmvention has shown our pupils that there are amazing opportunities awaiting them in Britain’s countryside. It has really helped broaden their horizons, especially as many of the children haven’t even been outside of London. “As a headteacher there’s nothing better than pupils who are enthusiastic about learning and it’s been amazing to see them so excited to experience new things, from making pizzas and flying drones to brushing ponies and caring for newly-hatched chicks. “I think it’s safe to say that all the children have loved stepping into the shoes of our wonderful farmers. It’s a day they’ll remember long into the future.”

ATV’s

Simple Security

The way farmers move around their property has evolved, from walking to riding horses, now to driving all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) In 2019, these vehicles are now the main workhorse for any farm, no matter the location or size, due to their ability to tackle any terrain and move heavy items from A to B with ease. So if they are stolen, the loss can potentially affect how a farm runs effectively on a day to day basis. Here are some top tips to ensure your ATV is secure: •When purchasing an ATV ensure the dealership you purchase it from fits a tracker system. •Ensure that you record all the serial numbers of the vehicles/ machinery you may have on site as it will help you identify vehicles if one is stolen. •Make sure you are lighting the right places on your

farm (tool sheds, fuel tanks and outbuildings) and install motion sensor lights that will automatically illuminate areas if any movement is detected. •Report all incidents of theft and any suspicious behaviour to the police because if it is not, the police will not know it is happening. •Keep all vehicles out of sight and weld a metal cover over the hasp to protect the building’s padlocks from being cut with bolt cutters. •Ensure that any storage areas are locked with padlocks, hasps and deadbolts. •Regularly prune any trees or shrubbery that could potentially block the light sources. •Regularly tour your farm to look

at spots that are in permanent darkness as well as vulnerable areas such as gates, fences and doors that could be damaged and may need fixing or replacing. •Do not leave any vehicles outside when you have finished with them and ensure the keys have been removed and placed somewhere safe within the house. •Display signage at the front of your farm telling visitors where they cannot go. Can-Am provides utility users with innovative, economical, comfortable and versatile ATVs and SSVs.

Simple safety for ATV users

When you think of a farmer’s vehicles, the first ones that come to mind are tractors and all-terrain vehicles (ATV) These are the cornerstone of any farm however, what an ATV offers compared to other vehicles is increased versatility in terms of towing and hauling capacity and the capability to handle multiple terrains with ease, from steep inclines to boggy field. These benefits have led to ATVs becoming the workhorse vehicles that are relied upon on a day to day basis. With that in mind,

always remember that the farm is a potentially dangerous work environment, so it is important that when using an ATV, safe riding is at the forefront of the user’s mind when out in the field. Here are some top tips when it comes to rider safety: •Make sure that the loads carried on the racks are secure and evenly balanced and do not exceed the capacity of the ATV (check the manufacturers’ recommendations). •Always be aware of your surroundings and keep your eyes peeled for any pedestrians, livestock, obstructions or other vehicles. •Inspect the ATV before use to ensure that it is in good working order. •Avoid sudden increases in speed as this is one of the common causes for an overturned vehicle. •Always wear the correct personal protective equipment

22 WorkingFarmer.co.uk / August 2019

(PPE) such as a helmet, boots, long sleeve shirt and trousers when out riding. •When riding across a slope, keep your weight forward. When going downhill, slide your weight backwards, select a low gear and use engine braking, which leads to the reduction in the need to use the brakes. •When working a new area, make sure you walk the route before riding through it. This will give you a better perspective of the dangers or obstacles that you could come across. •You cannot predict the British weather as one minute it could be bright sunshine and the next it could be pouring with rain, so be aware of changes in ground conditions as these could affect the loads you are carrying or the attachments you are pulling. •Always read the owner’s manual.

Silage

Research shows benefits, risks and solution for better multi-cut grass Preserving the high quality material from a multi-cut approach

W

ith the drive to boost milk from forage, the increasingly popular multicut approach of cutting grass for silage while younger and taking more cuts per season offers a number of potential advantages: Higher ME (for milk production) – because younger grass is more digestible Higher protein content – because nitrogen assimilated into protein by the plant hasn’t yet been ‘diluted’ by extra growth Higher overall yield – from more cuts over the season Additional benefits include: Easier silage-making / less weather-dependent – because lighter cuts wilt faster Easier clamp consolidation – because younger grass contains less stem material Reduced silage variability – from grass being cut at a more uniform growth stage Higher silage intakes – since increased digestibility means less time in the rumen However, while multi-cut silage offers advantages, it has also been thought it needs particular care when conserving this higher quality material. Latest research to assess the

benefits, risks and solutions for a multi-cut system A new, detailed research project was conducted by Volac silage scientists last season in South Wales to assess: 1. The key benefits of multi-cut grass 2. The ensiling risks in a multicut system 3. Whether these could be mitigated by applying a wellrecognised additive (Ecosyl) Focus on the results Analysis of the ‘raw material’ grass crop Analysis of standing crop samples from a multi-cut field revealed that while it was indeed consistently high in digestibility and ME, it was also a consistently challenging material to ensile: Crude protein was relatively high – good for nutrition but a risk because high protein buffers the fermentation Enterobacteria, commonly associated with slurry, were present – a risk because slurry bacteria interfere with an efficient fermentation by consuming sugar in the clamp (and the shorter cutting intervals with multi-cut means less time for slurry to dissipate in the field) Naturally-present lactic acidproducing bacteria were low

in numbers – making rapid fermentation less likely if relying on these alone Analysis of the ensiled crop Following on from this, analysis of silages made from multiple cuts at intervals of up to 95 days after ensiling repeatedly revealed: Without additive: Very slow fermentation / slow production of beneficial lactic acid – with the pH remaining high Proliferation of ‘bad bacteria’ High dry matter losses Indications of poor protein preservation With additive: Clear demonstration that beneficial bacteria in Ecosyl (Lactobacillus plantarum MTD/1) dominated the fermentation Faster production of beneficial lactic acid plus rapid pH falls Suppression of ‘bad bacteria’ Substantial reductions in dry matter losses Indications of improved protein preservation Overall, this latest research concluded that treating with Ecosyl resulted in more of a higher quality silage to feed, when compared to untreated silage.

ew tenancy law reform proposals will provide greater flexibility for tenant farming businesses allowing them to be more productive, the NFU has said. As part of a Government consultation, the NFU has held meetings with hundreds of tenant farmer members seeking views on options for reform of agricultural tenancy law in England and Wales. The aim of the proposals is to ensure that the policy framework for agricultural tenancies is fit for the future and enable tenant farmers and agricultural landlords to thrive as the UK moves away from the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) and implements a new domestic agriculture policy. NFU tenants forum chairman Chris Cardell said: “This consultation has given us a valuable opportunity to engage with our tenant farmer

General

Tenancy law reform proposals will allow greater productivity and investment, says NFU members to hear their views on the planned changes for the tenanted sector. “We have made clear in our submission that the proposals will allow greater flexibility within the sector such as removing restrictions to tenancy law and opening up rules on succession. This will allow both landlords and tenants to make investments in their farm holdings, which will help drive greater productivity. “The tenanted sector produces many and varied opportunities for the next generation of agricultural entrepreneurs and plays an important role for farming businesses. It’s therefore vital that reforms supporting this are implemented. “Our sector has an exciting, modern future and we look forward to working with Defra and fellow stakeholders within the Tenancy Reform Industry Group (TRIG) to create the necessary legal frameworks to deliver these exciting opportunities.”

British farmers leading the way in climate-friendly food

F

armers are striding forwards in their aspiration for net zero agriculture in Britain as they join industry leaders, scientists and policymakers today to explore what changes are needed to deliver climate-friendly food for all. Speaking at a farming and climate change conference hosted by the NFU and Sustainable Food Trust, NFU President Minette Batters will emphasise that every farmer has a role to play in contributing towards the industry’s net zero aspiration. She will also urge Government to provide effective incentives to help farmers reach this target by 2040. Mrs Batters will say: “Climate change is the greatest and most

compelling challenge facing society today and each and every one of us has a part to play to mitigate the climate threat. For farmers, this means tackling the climate challenge head on – adapting the way we produce food to help deliver a greener planet for us all. “The British farming industry is pushing itself to become net zero by 2040. This does not need to impact net farm income, and certainly doesn’t mean downsizing production or exporting our production abroad. Instead we need to implement a portfolio of methods to improve our production efficiency, capture more carbon on farmland and boost our production of bioenergy and land-based renewables. Effective incentives are going to

be vital in each of these areas. “As both a sink and a source of greenhouse gasses, British agriculture is uniquely placed to be a key part of the solution to the climate challenge. Our unique landscape and diverse farming systems enable us to produce food efficiently and sustainably, and we have been very clear in our ambition to build on this further and lead the way in climate-friendly food production. “Our journey towards climate neutrality must be made together. If we work together, learn from each other and share our ideas I truly believe we can reach our net zero aspiration, and show the world that it can be done.”

NFU President urges incoming Prime Minister to ensure smooth EU exit NFU President Minette Batters has today congratulated Boris Johnson on his election as Conservative party leader and urged him to do everything in his power to ensure that our departure from the EU is carried out in a smooth and orderly way.

T

he NFU has been clear that an orderly departure, that includes free and frictionless trade with the EU, is crucial in delivering the best outcome for British food production. Leaving the EU with a trade deal is vital to allow farm businesses and Britain’s food producers to have a viable and sustainable future – continuing to produce food to some of the highest global standards whilst at the same time protecting the iconic British natural environment. In a letter to the incoming Prime Minister, the NFU is highlighting five additional policy priorities for the new Government: Stimulating farm business competitiveness and innovation through policies that ensure British farming is a leader in its field and result in a more resilient and advanced sector Rising to the challenges of tackling climate change through concerted government effort now to put in place the policies to help deliver the NFU’s ambition to reach net zero by 2040 Promoting our high food stan dards through trade policy, building a globally recognised British Food Brand and ensuring

our high standards of animal welfare and environmental protection are not undermined by trade deals that allows imports of food that would be illegal to produce in the UK. Ensuring an adequate supply of labour by delivering a future immigration system that is fit for purpose and recognises the specific needs and challenges of agriculture and horticulture A long-term budgetary commitment for food and farming through a new agricultural policy that rewards farmers fairly for delivering public goods, supports stability and resilience, and provides funding that recognises the long, multi-annual timeframes farmers and growers operate to. Mrs Batters said: “British farming is one of the nation’s most important assets, delivering safe, traceable and affordable food to millions, all while taking care of the beautiful countryside we have such great pride in. It underpins the nation’s largest manufacturing sector, food and drink, contributing more than £120 billion to the economy and employing almost four million people. “To achieve the best outcome from Brexit, we need to leave the EU in a smooth and orderly way.

28 WorkingFarmer.co.uk / August 2019

A deal with the EU is crucial to maintaining free trade with our closest neighbours and largest trading partners, as well as access to people that want to come to the UK to work on farms. “Mr Johnson has an opportunity to develop a new agricultural policy that works for Britain by creating a sustainable, vibrant and competitive future for our farming sector. “We need to see policies that allow farm businesses to innovate, that help farmers rise to the challenge of tackling climate change, that enable farms access to the workers that pick, pack and grade our fruit, veg and flowers, and crucially an Agriculture Bill that is fit for purpose for the rising challenges of food production. “I look forward to working with the incoming Prime Minister and his Government to ensure we can achieve this and that British farming is recognised as strategically important for the nation. “I would also like to thank Theresa May for her efforts as Prime Minister and her willingness to engage with the food and farming sector at such a crucial time.”

The NFU is reminding growers of simple but effective ways they can stay safe this summer as combines are dusted off and harvest begins in earnest.

A

s more agricultural vehicles take to the roads and fields, the NFU urges farmers and growers to follow five top tips: · Check that tractors and trailers are roadworthy. Make sure that indicators are fully visible and that trailer brakes are working correctly. ·Ensure all drivers are competent. Children under 16 are only allowed to operate certain machines, and it is illegal for children under 13 to drive or ride on any kind of agricultural machine. ·Be clear on the weight of vehicles

and trailers and follow the correct speed limit. ·Don’t be tempted to cut corners to save time. Always consider the risks and take steps to mitigate them before the work is carried out. ·Ensure that all employees working on the farm have sufficient rest periods to help them stay alert. NFU Vice President Stuart Roberts said: “It’s easy to get caught up in the hectic nature of harvest. It’s an incredibly busy period for all arable farmers and quite often we’re working long hours to get the job done. “I know first-hand the time pressures

Machinery Machinery

NFU top tips help farmers stay safe during harvest

many farmers are under during harvest, but we’re all important to our businesses and our families. It is not worth risking an accident or injury just for the sake of saving a few minutes. “This harvest I urge all farmers to take a second before we launch ourselves into the mammoth task ahead. We need to take the time to check that all our equipment is in good working order, that we are complying with vehicle weight and speed regulation and that our employees fully understand the correct processes to follow. “Let’s make our safety our priority all throughout harvest.”

New Defra Secretary of State urged to back British farming

NFU President Minette Batters says she’s looking forward to working closely with new Defra Secretary of State Theresa Villiers to help forge the positive future of farming and food production in this country. She says central to that will be to ensure the UK leaves the EU in a smooth and orderly manner, which includes free and frictionless trade with the EU. Mrs Batters said: “British farming is proud to produce some of the highest quality food in the world. I look forward to working with the new Secretary of State to showcase the incredibly high standards to which British farmers deliver food for the nation, alongside caring for our animals and the countryside. I invite Ms Villiers to join me on my farm so she can see first-hand the work that goes in to producing the country’s food and its potential for the future. “When it comes to her political priorities, safeguarding Britain’s food producers and our domestic food supply has never been more important. Leaving the EU, our closest neighbours and trading partners, in a smooth and orderly way is vital to allow farm businesses to have a viable and sustainable future – continuing to produce food to some of the highest global standards while protecting and maintaining our iconic British landscape. “That’s why we urge the new Secretary

of State to follow up on the promise of her predecessor and commit to a highlevel commission to avoid British food production standards being undermined in the pursuit of post-Brexit trade deals.” In a letter sent to the new Secretary of State, the NFU has highlighted five immediate policy priorities for Defra: A comprehensive impact assessment of the potential impacts of Brexit on the farming sector A fully developed and reinvigorated policy on improving productivity in agriculture A Trade and Standards Commission to be established to ensure our high standards of production are not undermined by our future trade policy A food-focused agricultural policy that rewards farmers fairly for the delivery of public goods Measures to strengthen farmers’ position in the supply chain including a market review Mrs Batters said: “British farming is the backbone of the largest manufacturing sector, food and drink, contributing more than £120 billion to the economy and employing over four million people.

“Government must develop an agricultural policy that encourages productive farming, allows farmers to continue to produce safe, traceable and affordable food for everyone and be custodians of the countryside. We need policies in place that allow farming businesses to innovate, support investment in new technologies to help farmers in the fight against climate change and allow farms access to a competent and reliable workforce. “As an industry we are ready and able to tackle the challenges ahead as well as making the most of new opportunities. The support of the new Secretary of State will be instrumental and we need her to back British farming like never before. “I would also like to thank Michael Gove for his hard work and dedication to farming and agriculture over the past two years. He has recognised the difficult challenges facing the farming sector and the enormous potential we have to feed the nation. I hope the new Secretary of State will maintain the same progressive and energetic approach.”

Machinery Machinery

Venture Farm Machinery is appointed McCormick dealer for Northamptonshire Being appointed to the sales, service and parts dealer network for McCormick tractors is the icing on the cake for business partners Nigel Gardiner and Jim Pearson – and they have local farmers to thank for the opportunity.

W

e weren’t looking for a tractor franchise at this time in our company’s development, says Nigel Gardiner of Venture Farm Machinery, Pytchley near Kettering. “But the level of interest shown in the McCormick tractors we borrowed for our Krone grass machinery demonstration set off a lightbulb moment; we had a long discussion with the McCormick people the next day and everything came together. “They wanted a dealer on our patch and we could see how the McCormick tractors would suit all farming and non-farming requirements in the area while complementing our equipment franchises.” Nigel Gardiner and fellow director Jim Pearson formed Venture Farm Machinery three years ago after they were made redundant from a large agricultural equipment dealership when several branches were closed. They recruited colleague Derek

Lispcombe from the same group to draw on his long standing parts management experience and soon were appointed to handle sales and after-sales support for Amazone, Krone and Opico implements, along with Kidd and Tanco implements, and HM trailers. Together with parts, tools and accessories from the Granit range and complementary suppliers, business soon took off. “A number of people wonder how it’s possible to set-up a new dealership and acquire such leading franchises,” says Mr Gardiner. “But in each case we were in the right place at the right time with the right experience when the manufacturers needed local representation.” Ben Agar of McCormick manufacturer Argo Tractors says the track record of the people in the business makes him confident of their continued success with the McCormick tractor franchise covering Northamptonshire. “Jim and Nigel have proven sales and sales management

ability, and Derek’s 20-years experience makes him the go-to man for parts, so they have the complementary skills needed for the business to do well,” he says. As for the McCormick product range, Jim Pearson believes the tractors are under-rated: “With compact tractors from 43hp, through a good choice of mid-range models, up to the big six-cylinder machines there’s something for everyone in the McCormick line-up,” he maintains. “The cab designs offer a lovely working environment with modern features, fit and finish, and they’re built using top-quality components, either manufactured in the Argo Tractors factories in northern Italy or sourced from renowned suppliers such as ZF and Carraro. “I’ve had more interest in the first week with the McCormick tractors than any tractors I’ve sold before,” he adds. “We just need to encourage potential customers to get behind the wheel to see for themselves how good they are.”

MITSUBISHI OUTLANDER PHEV CONTINUES SUCCESS IN EUROPE The Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV has become Mitsubishi Motors Europe’s (MME) best-selling vehicle, out-selling all other models in the Mitsubishi range.

I

n 2018, the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV was the bestselling plug-in hybrid vehicle in Europe across all segments, an accolade it claimed for the fourth consecutive year. During this time, the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV has also gradually become MME’s bestselling vehicle. In November 2018 more Outlander PHEVs were sold in Europe than any other model in the Mitsubishi range, and this has continued every month since. In total, between

October 2013 and January 2019, 126,617 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEVs have been sold in Europe. This success has been boosted by significant growth recorded in markets like Germany and France along with the launch of the 2019 model during September 2018. A new 2.4-litre petrol engine produces 135ps (up from 121ps) with greater torque (211Nm vs 190Nm). Increased output of the rear electric motor, drive battery and overall battery capacity resulted in WLTP combined fuel economy of 139mpg and WLTP

42 WorkingFarmer.co.uk / July 2019

emissions of 46 g/km. Key to the success of the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV is that it doesn’t ask its owners to make any compromises. For people wanting an SUV with green credentials it offers a combination of space and practicality, 4WD ability and an EV driving range of 28 miles, which is in excess of the average daily commute. Commenting on this performance, Bernard Loire - President & CEO of Mitsubishi Motors Europe said: “Today, to our many European customers, the Mitsubishi Outlander

PHEV is the true goanywhere vehicle, equally at ease in zero-emission restricted access city centres, on long distance family driving and on twisting mountain roads with its twin motor 4WD system.” He added: “The Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV is our brand flagship, our best seller in Europe, a trend-setter that the industry is watching carefully and a pointer to MMC’s long term strategy, blending adventurous SUV heritage with progressive electrified technologies.”

VAUXHALL GRANDLAND X JOINS THE RANKS AT CORNWALL FIRE, RESCUE AND COMMUNITY SAFETY SERVICE

Vauxhall’s Grandland X SUV is the dependable and versatile vehicle of choice for the Cornwall Fire, Rescue and Community Safety Service, which has ordered a fleet of eight vehicles

T

he vehicles will be used by officers to respond to incidents within the local community, including fire and emergency response. The Cornwall Fire, Rescue and Community Safety Service opted for the Grandland X in Tech Line Nav trim with the All Road Pack, which features Vauxhall’s innovative IntelliGrip traction control system. The electronic system ensures optimum road grip in diverse driving situations and adapts the torque distribution to the front wheels depending on which of the five driving modes has been selected. This ensures the best traction and stable handling on any surface, including snow, mud and sand. Additional features to come with the Grandland X Tech Line Nav trim include numerous safety and security systems,

such as front parking distance sensors, automatic emergency braking, lane assist and side blind spot alert. A Navi 5.0 IntelliLink infotainment system with 8-inch colour touchscreen and voice control adds to the technological edge of the package. The community service added a heated windscreen and wireless charging as optional extras. The SUVs are fitted with powerful and efficient 1.5-litre (130PS) diesel engines. “We were looking for an appropriate response vehicle to meet the demands of the diverse nature or Cornwall’s rugged landscape,” said Mark Salter, Cornwall Fire, Rescue and Community Safety Service’s Group Manager – Assets. “As a rural county, our officers are required to negotiate narrow B-roads, unmade tracks and agricultural terrain, as well as coping with dramatic seasonal

changes throughout the year. Typically, Cornwall has a higher degree of rainfall than other parts of the country. As a result, we needed a vehicle that would provide sufficient ground clearance and traction to safely manoeuvre through and over these hazards, to arrive safely and promptly at emergency incidents. “ The Cornwall Fire, Rescue and Community Safety Service works to ensure the health, safety and wellbeing of the local community. The service’s responsibilities include fire prevention and protection, road safety education and delivery, reducing crime and antisocial behaviour and co-responding to medical incidents. “We are thrilled that the Cornwall Fire, Rescue and Community Safety Service has chosen the Grandland X to support its work across the county,” said Mike Roberts, Sales Manager

for Vauxhall Special Vehicles. “We’re confident that our IntelliGrip traction system in particular will prove indispensable across Cornwall’s diverse landscape. Whether on the beach and coastline, driving over wet and muddy terrain or in snowy and icy conditions, the system will increase driver safety and guarantee stability at all times.” As standard, the Grandland X includes equipment such as LED daytime running lights, camera-based lane departure warning, road sign recognition, intelligent cruise control, and dual zone electronic climate control with particulate and odour filter. At 4.48 metres long, it is the largest SUV in Vauxhall’s range, offering even more cabin space than the 20cmshorter Mokka X and Crossland X.
