AHDB Beef & Lamb is looking for research and industry collaborators to form a five-year Beef Knowledge Partnership focusing on key areas of beef production.

A

AHDB Beef & Lamb is looking for research and industry collaborators to form a five-year Beef Knowledge Partnership focusing on key areas of beef production. The aim of the £1.5 million project is to devise and implement a programme of research, development and knowledge exchange in two key areas: improving youngstock health and reducing losses due to poor health and disease during the production cycle improving efficiency in the use of feed and forages, including updating nutrition standards for beef cattle. The AHDB Beef & Lamb programme will deliver focused, commercially-relevant, innovative research. The project will

also collect information on new technical developments, improved practices and emerging ideas from across the world. An intensive programme of knowledge exchange will accelerate uptake by farmers, in order to prepare for the challenges facing beef producers in the years ahead. Dr Mary Vickers, AHDB Beef & Lamb senior scientist, said: “Mortality and production loss due to disease have a significant impact on the bottom line, and reduce our competitiveness internationally. Increasing pressure to minimise antibiotic use across the livestock industry means that it is more important than ever to focus on proactive cattle health management. “Food and forage use efficiency is another key factor in sustaining a

profitable beef system. Research on beef ration formulation is now 30 years old, so there is a real need for updating through new research. “A partnership approach provides a flexible means for researchers and the beef industry to work collaboratively. “The five-year term of the agreement means the work being undertaken can respond dynamically to new developments or emerging science.” The Knowledge Partnership will be able to expand on existing AHDB collaborations and will be encouraged to access funding from other sources, such as UK Research Councils, Innovate UK and the industry, to add value to levy spend. Further information on the call and the application process can be found on the AHDB Beef & Lamb website.

Brexit: NOAH’s priorities for the UK animal medicines sector

N

OAH has set out the priorities needed to deliver a thriving animal health sector following the UK’s exit from the EU.

Commenting after its Board meeting on 1 November, NOAH Chair Cat Sayer said: “The UK must continue to be a vibrant and innovative animal health market, providing opportunities for animal medicines businesses to thrive. “We are in a strong position in the UK to be a global centre of excellence for animal medicines, supporting both innovative product developments and a regulatory model to benefit both local and international trade. We need to ensure that our industry’s needs and priorities are included in discussions on how the UK exit develops,” she said. Following the UK’s exit from the EU, NOAH stresses the need to ensure that measures are in place to facilitate trade and innovation in the animal medicines sector. Future UK regulation

of veterinary medicines must incentivise product research and development – an environment where companies are encouraged to do business in the UK. “The health and welfare of British animals, as well as our public health and food safety need to be safeguarded – our vets and animal keepers need to continue to have access to a wide range of appropriate animal medicines. “And we must not forget our people. The animal medicines industry has many highly skilled roles. Businesses will continue to need to be able to recruit the best,” said Ms Sayer. NOAH has formed a Brexit Task Force from members of its Board, covering the breadth of the UK animal medicines sector which is working to identify the risks but also the opportunities offered by the UK post EU Exit for its members. It includes both UK based and global company heads. The Task Force will represent members’ views and drive policy forward at this crucial time. NOAH is collaborating with partners

6 | Working Farmer | www.workingfarmer.co.uk

across the animal health sector, including veterinary, human health, agricultural and pets and engaging with relevant government departments to ensure that veterinary medicines are included in future government industrial strategy. “In the UK consumers both encourage and expect high standards of animal welfare in food production and pet owners also want prompt and effective care. UK veterinary surgeons and animal owners need access to a full range of medicines and vaccines to protect animal welfare by preventing disease and treating illness effectively,” added Cat.

Animax Veterinary technology

A

nimax launches first sheep bolus with highest trace elements levels

Three of the most important trace elements for sheep can now be delivered in a single bolus thanks to a new product developed by leading UK bolus technology company, Animax Ltd. Tracesure 3-in-1 Sheep & Lamb is the latest addition to Animax’s range of boluses. The company’s veterinary director, Dr Elizabeth Berry, says the product is not only suitable for maintaining normal health, vitality and fertility of adult sheep and rams but can be used on replacement ewe lambs or ram lambs. “Cobalt, selenium and iodine can be given in this combined bolus which has 185mg of cobalt, 100mg of selenium and 660mg of iodine, higher levels than any other bolus on the market!’’ Dr Berry explains. The need for supplementation because of lack of these elements in the diet can be common and necessary with variables including soil type, level of rainfall, grass varieties, forage type and grassland management. Dr Berry says pregnant and growing sheep have a higher need for these trace elements. “They may not obtain enough from their normal diet,’’ she warns. “Tracesure 3-in-1 Sheep & Lamb contains optimum amounts to cover demands during growth, pregnancy and lactation and will provide these for a period of approximately six months.’’

At Troedyrharn, Brecon, fat lamb producer Rob Stephens says the benefits of the bolus is visual and important for flock condition – it is that daily release; he can see the advantages by looking at his flock.

There is also the added advantage that 4g of copper oxide is contained in Tracesure Sheep Traffic Lights, a separate capsule for supplementation in cases of low copper in the diet.

He fattens 1500 store lambs annually. “We buy lean lambs but we don’t quite know their history so we bolus them, it does a phenomenal job.’’

The newly-launched Tracesure 3-in-1 Sheep & Lamb is generating strong sales. Dr Berry says in addition to optimum trace element supplementation, labour efficiency is a key attraction.

He boluses ewes at tupping and at scanning, with the benefit of the application at scanning passing to lambs in the womb and later, through their mother’s milk.

“One bolus, utilising Animax’s unique leaching bolus technology, does the job.’’

LET’S TALK ????????? -4% How #Glyphosate works for us all The withdrawal of approval for glyphosate would entail serious consequences for farmers and our environment

1

Returning to mechanical weed control would impact on lapwing, partridge and skylark nests destroying eggs and young chicks

4

49% more labour would be needed per hectare each year

2

Using glyphosate allows conservation tillage which protects soils. There are 53% more earthworms in no plough systems of cultivation

5

Glyphosate protects 20% of winter wheat and winter oilseed rape yield

8

25% increase in arable crop GHG emissions if glyphosate were no longer available

3

Reintroducing ploughing into non-tillage fields can reduce soil organic matter by 4% in the first 1-6 months

6

Glyphosate use allows 15% more rapeseed and 17% more wheat to be produced

9

Without glyphosate 12 million tonnes of CO2e would be added to our atmosphere (equivalent to emissions from at least 2.5 million cars)

3.4 times the size of London

7

Losing glyphosate would mean 546,000 hectares more land would be needed to grow the same amount of food

The RSPCA has banned the Bedfordshire man from keeping farm animals for life

A

BEDFORDSHIRE man has been disqualified from keeping farm animals for life after around 100 cows were found in his barns and fields - many of them emaciated, dying or dead. The RSPCA was called in January concerning the cows - all British Whites - kept at Green End Farm, Green Lane, Swineshead, Bedfordshire. When inspectors arrived with a specialist vet, they found five of the cows dead and another nine in such a bad state of health that the vet said they had to be put to sleep to prevent further suffering. A further 85 cows were taken into RSPCA care. Andrew Peter Leishman, 69, of the above address, appeared at Luton Magistrates Court on Monday and pleaded guilty to offences under the Animal Welfare Act. He admitted causing unnecessary suffering to a number of the cattle, by failing to provide adequate nutrition and not providing a suitable environment for their needs. Leishman was given a life disqualification on keeping all farm animals, including equines, and was ordered to pay £94,375 costs to the RSPCA as well as attend 240 hours of community service. RSPCA Chief Inspector Mark Thompson said: “I will never forget the sight of so many cows lying there dead, or dying, or

so ill that they would have gone that way had we not been called to the rescue when we were. It was truly shocking. “There were many animals lying there so still I thought that I thought they were dead at first. These were effectively starved to death. They just had not been given the food they needed to be healthy and survive. “They had also been kept in filthy, completely unsuitable conditions - with deep litter all around them and in some cases up to their bellies. One poor bull in

particular was surrounded by so much filth he couldn’t move. “What made this case worse for me is that this defendant was very knowledgeable about this breed of cows - and knew what they needed, and yet failed miserably to provide it.” Very sadly, around 20 of the cows taken into RSPCA care were so unwell that they did not survive, despite being under constant veterinary care. The remaining 66 have now been signed over to the charity’s care and will be rehomed.

CCIR trials indicate early success

T

Trials of the Collection and Communication of Inspection Results (CCIR) postmortem condition cards and training of meat inspectors will commence in late September to help standardise and streamline the quality of data. Emma Bailey-Beech, AHDB Pork food safety project manager, said Karro Food Group in Malton was one of the five processing

plants involved in the wider trial.

she adds.

“Working as part of the CCIR team, consisting of FSA, AHDB, BMPA and the other major UK pork processors, Karro, as one of the UK’s major slaughter sites, saw the benefit in the change from paper-based recording to the ‘one vision’ approach,” says Emma.

“Karro has reported that good progress has been made and endorses the new system, acknowledging that it has great potential in supplying pig producers with accurate realtime information concerning the health and welfare of pigs delivered to site.”

“They were keen to get involved in the testing phase and are using additional screens on the line to record the new condensed list of offal and carcase conditions,”

Emma says that, following the trials, all the FSA inspectors will be trained with the finalised conditions cards. “The effectiveness of both the

condition cards and training package will be validated with an online verification assessment in late September, this will be measured against an already completed baseline assessment carried out at Karro. Once complete, this training will be rolled out regionally.” For more information, please contact Martin Smith: martin. smith@ahdb.org.uk 024 7647 8977. Or email: iris@ foodstandards.gsi.co.uk

NOAH welcomes protection of antibiotics for animals and people Today’s publication of ‘Tackling Drug Resistant Infections Globally: Final Report and Recommendations’, by Lord Jim O’Neill, is a global landmark in the fight to keep antibiotics effective for both animals and people, says NOAH, which represents the UK animal medicines sector.

O

AH Chief Executive Dawn Howard says: “We endorse the proposal for incentives to develop innovative new treatments and better diagnostics: these must include the veterinary sector, so that animal medicines are available to treat the diseases that vets and farmers encounter. Improving the availability and uptake of vaccines, which is also proposed, can reduce the need for antibiotics. Veterinary surgeons need access to a range of medicines, including antibiotics, in order to treat the conditions and species under their care and support the high standards of animal welfare our society expects. “The Report’s call for improved surveillance will build on work already being undertaken within the different livestock sectors, for example in the UK poultry and pig sectors. Targets to reduce antibiotic use must be based on

an understanding of why and where antibiotics are currently used, and we welcome the Report’s suggestion that careful consideration must be given to how any target setting will be done. Once the facts have been established, resources can then be focussed on areas where change is most needed to reduce any unnecessary use.

colistin,” Dawn Howard says. “Any changes need to be given a realistic timeframe in order that animal welfare is not compromised – something the report itself acknowledges,” she adds.

“It is important to remember that in the UK – and indeed throughout the EU, veterinary antibiotics are only available on veterinary prescription and have been banned as growth promoters since 2006,” she adds.

“We also fully support the Report’s call for a global public awareness campaign of this ‘One Health’ issue involving both human and animal health to improve understanding and compliance. This is a global report for a global problem, with practical recommendations and calls to action, both on the international stage and here in the UK.”

The Report recommends restrictions on certain antibiotics for veterinary use. “NOAH believes that any such decisions must be based on independent regulatory officials’ expert opinions and must follow the agreed regulatory process – such as the recent EMA (European Medicines Agency) reevaluation of the veterinary use of

Dawn Howard concludes: “The UK animal medicines sector looks forward to its role in implementing the Report’s recommendations by being part of the collaboration between UK government and industry, to develop practical proposals so that antibiotics remain effective to protect the health of people and animals into the future.”

Where do cattle come from?

B

os taurus (European cattle) are descended from the Auroch that lived in Northern Europe. They were domesticated as long ago as the Neolithic age and have been kept as livestock ever since for their meat, milk and hides. Historically there was less distinction between dairy cattle and beef cattle, with the same breeds used for both milk and meat. However, in the developed world today farmers generally keep either beef or dairy cattle. Through generations of selection, dairy breeds such as the Holstein, are bred specifically to produce very high volumes of milk. The calves of dairy and beef cows are likely to have very different lives. Beef cattle are generally slaughtered after one to two years in Europe but they can be up to five years old in the case of extensively reared animals. Female dairy calves are usually reared on for milk production. Dairy cows produce some male calves which are generally less suitable for beef production. Sadly,

in the UK some of these are either shot at birth or could be exported to low welfare veal farms outside the UK. Fortunately the number of calves being exported from England, Scotland and Wales is low currently, but several thousand animals are exported to the continent each year from Northern Ireland. Due to co-operation between Compassion in World Farming, the RSPCA and the industry through the Calf Stakeholder Forum, more male dairy calves are now reared humanely for beef and the number of calves being shot at birth has greatly decreased. There is more work to do - around 55, 000 dairy calves are still shot every year. Beef cattle are often reared outdoors on grass, although many are brought indoors or crowded into feedlots for fattening before slaughter. Even though many cattle in the UK, Ireland and Northern France are fattened on

10 | Working Farmer | www.workingfarmer.co.uk

grass, many cattle are kept indoors and fattened on a high grain diet across most of Europe. In indoor systems, beef cattle are commonly housed on slatted floors in crowded conditions, which increases aggression and can lead to severe injuries and lameness. There are also specific welfare concerns for dairy cows and calves.

Government seeks Official TB-Free status

O

Over half of England could receive Official TB-Free (OTB) Status next year, marking a significant step in the Government’s strategy to eradicate the disease. Ministers say that England is set to apply for OTF status in 2017 - two years ahead of schedule - for the low risk areas of north and east England. If successful, it would be the first time anywhere in England has enjoyed the status, bringing about trade opportunities and reducing TB-testing costs for farmers. “Gaining global recognition that more than half of England is TB-free will be a significant milestone in our longterm plan to eradicate this devastating disease, and will open up new trading opportunities for farmers,” explained environment secretary Andrea Leadsom. “We have much still to do in the worst affected parts of the country, but this

shows that our strategy - combining practical biosecurity measures, a robust cattle movement and testing regime, and badger control in areas where the disease is rife - is right and is working.” Figures published on Friday (16 December) show that more than 10,000 badgers have been culled so far in efforts to prevent the spread of TB. Ministers have described the outcome as a success and are now consulting on plans to extend the cull beyond the planned four years. Other measures announced as part of the government’s 25-years strategy include: Wider use of blood tests alongside the current skin test in the high risk area to provide a more sensitive testing regime in TB affected herds, minimising the risk of leaving infected animals in herds A plan to introduce new, more coherent powers to manage the TB risk in pigs, sheep, goats, deer and camelids, to bring them more in line with cattle controls. This will include new statutory

compensation arrangements for these species More frequent updates to the ibTB online tool which allows farmers to view TB outbreaks close to their farm. From early in 2017 the data will be refreshed every fortnight rather than every month. Commenting, chief veterinary offer Nigel Gibbens said: “This year we have seen that badger control can be delivered successfully on a wider scale. “Further expansion in the coming years, alongside our robust cattle movement and testing regime, will allow us to achieve and maintain long term reductions in the level of TB across the South West and Midlands where the disease is currently widespread.”

Defra confirms avian influenza in England

A

vian influenza H5N8 has been detected on a turkey farm near Louth in Lincolnshire, Defra has confirmed.

More than 5,000 birds at the farm have been affected - most have died and any remaining birds will be humanely culled. A 3km protection zone and a 10km surveillance zone has been put in place around the farm to limit the spread of disease. Chief veterinary officer Nigel Gibbens said: "Avian flu has been confirmed on a turkey farm in Lincolnshire. This is the

same strain that has been affecting poultry in Europe." Public Health England (PHE) said the risk to public health is very low and the Food Standards Agency (FSA) confirmed bird flu does not pose a food safety risk to UK consumers. Thoroughly cooked poultry and poultry products - including eggs are safe to eat. It is not anticipated that supplies of turkeys and other birds will be affected over Christmas. Prevention zones (housing orders) that were introduced on 6 December remain in place in England, Scotland and Wales - including within the protection and

| Working Farmer | www.workingfarmer.co.uk 14 14 | Working Farmer | www.workingfarmer.co.uk

surveillance zones. Defra said poultry and captive bird keepers should continue to house their birds where practical, maintain their biosecurity and remain vigilant about their birds' health. A detailed investigation is underway to determine the most likely source of the outbreak. Mr Gibbens added: "Bird keepers should remain alert for any signs of disease, report suspected disease immediately and ensure they are maintaining good biosecurity on their premises. "We are urgently looking for any evidence of disease spread associated with this farm to control and eliminate it."

UK launch of New Holland’s latest baling and forager products at LAMMA

U

K launch of BigBaler 1290 Plus and new Roll Baler 125 Updated Roll Belt baler

New NIR On Board Sensor technology for FR Forage Cruiser New Holland used its presence at LAMMA 2017 to launch its latest baling products, including the new BigBaler 1290 Plus and Roll Baler 125 to UK farmers. A new sensor for the FR Forage Cruiser was also unveiled. The BigBaler 1290 Plus is New Holland’s new flagship square baler, packed with best-in-class features including IntelliCruiseTM technology for tractor ground speed regulation, and SmartFillTM feed flow indicators for even bale formation.

with double cam drive and adjustable suspension. The Roll Baler 125 Combi is also part of the latest baler introductions. Unique to New Holland is its new film wrap system, which also features on the Roll Baler 135 Ultra. The wrapper’s positive hydraulic feed and bundle arms can pre-stretch the film to ensure a tight, secure and reliable wrap, every time. Suitable for use with plastic or net, the Roll Baler 125 Combi system works with a roller up to 1400mm wide and can carry three rollers on board. A further increase in productivity is gained from a 20% increase in wrapping speed, compared to the previous model.

New Holland’s stand also featured its updated Roll-Belt variable chamber baler, which features the new IntelliBaleTM system. A new forage crop sensor was launched at LAMMA for use with New Holland’s FR Forage Cruiser. The NIR On BoardTM advanced sensor provides improved information on key crop parameters including crop moisture and nutrient levels. Crude protein, crude fat, starch, Neutral Detergent Fibre (NDF), Acid Detergent Fibre (ADF) and ash can be measured with +/- 2% accuracy with the NIR On BoardTM, which will be available as an option on new machines.

A baling challenge in France in July 2016 demonstrated the performance benefits of the new BigBaler 1290 Plus. Working with a T7.315 Heavy Duty Auto CommandTM tractor, the baler produced an impressive 1,254 high quality straw bales in 17 hours, over two days. Throughout the challenge the baler maintained a consistent bale shape, with weight averaging 434kg and length averaging 2.37m. The Roll Baler 125 is New Holland’s latest round bale product. The Roll Baler 125 features best in class pick up efficiency using the latest pick up technology combined with the ultimate in feeding efficiency. The re-designed pick up was first introduced on the Big Baler and Roll Belt balers. On the Roll Baler 125 it is 300mm wider than previous models, at 2.3m. Feeding capacity is supported by five tine bars

People with the right, 'make it happen' attitude are the reason why our company has the reputation of being at the forefront of excellence in customer service. It's reflected both in the certified and qualified professionals who have worked with us for many years and have become part of farming life in our region. It even stems down to the new, enthusiastic apprentices who are just starting out on their careers, for they are the long term future. At Ripon Farm Services, we have 38 fully qualified service engineers and technicians who are recognised in the industry with LTA-based accreditation that is a measure of their technical capabilities. So, in the event of a machine breakdown or component failure, in most cases we can get you going straight away or at the latest, next morning. This is the basis on which we have established our company reputation. We aim to give every customer, the level of service that reflects the quality of machinery in which they have invested. At Ripon Farm Services, we stand for quality, after-sales service!

The Importance of Sprayer Testing Everyone will agree that accurate application of pesticides is not only desirable but essential whether for the environment, the consumer or the grower

A

ccurate and targeted use of pesticides is all part of modern agriculture. That’s why back in the mid 90’s the Chemical Application members of the Agricultural Engineers Association (AEA) devised a test for application machinery to make sure it was working as intended. In the early years of 2000 this test became the National Sprayer Testing Scheme as one of the main pillars of the Voluntary Initiative. NSTS now tests around 16,500 machines annually with the test also satisfying the requirements of the Sustainable Use Directive (SUD), which requires that all pesticide application equipment, sprayers, slug pellet applicators, granular applicators etc., need to be tested by 26th November 2016 and at regular intervals thereafter. NSTS is an accepted part of arable agriculture and requirement of the major crop assurance schemes and

supermarket protocols, requiring that farmers and growers have their sprayers inspected annually. This requirement continues with one of the annual tests satisfying the SUD requirements. The NSTS is available through a network of test centres who have qualified examiners available to inspect and confirm the equipment is of the standard required. The test is usually carried out at the machine owner’s premises and at a mutually agreed time. The examiner will charge for the inspection, the cost is commercial at the point of use. Additionally machine owners are free to use their nearest or preferred test centre. The operator or owner of the machine can prepare the sprayer for the test using a test sheet available from the NSTS website. Owners and operators are encouraged to take part in the test and will receive three NRoSO points for doing so. As confirmation of the result of the test the examiner will apply a pass sticker

to the machine and a copy of the test report form will be sent to the owner. Other copies are returned to NSTS Administration where the information is retained on a database of all tested machines. This information is available to Crop Assurance Certification Bodies and others for verification purposes. With the continued threat of more pesticides being lost, now is the time to contribute to accurate and targeted application procedures, NSTS testing helps achieve that. Having a NSTS test will also satisfy the Sustainable Use Directive which requires all sprayers to be tested by 26th November 2016. Find out more by visiting the NSTS website www.nsts.org.uk Duncan Russell NSTS Manager October 2016

New possibilities with the versatile Cultus

F

rom year model 2017 the tine cultivator Cultus can be delivered in three versions, customised for a range of field conditions. Because of this, there is a Cultus available for every soil type. Depending on the need for reconsolidation and weight distribution, the tine cultivator Cultus can now be delivered as a mounted machine without the hydraulic packer. Instead of the packer, Cultus is equipped with hydraulic levellers and carrier wheels. Cultus 300 in field - We have noticed an increased demand for having the opportunity to prepare the field for the spring drilling,

by cultivating it later in the autumn. By offering Cultus without its packer, the farmer gets a light machine well suited for moist conditions, says Johan Alsäter, product manager Soil at Väderstad, and continues:

From year model 2017, Cultus can be delivered in the following three versions: Mounted with the re-packer and mechanical levellers Trailed with RubberRunner and mechanical levellers Mounted with carrier wheels and hydraulic levellers

- The hydraulic levellers, which the driver is able to control from the cab, creates an even result and an open soil structure. Meanwhile, the robust carrier wheels ensure an exact working depth. Together with Väderstads wide point offering as well as the unique MixIn shin, the tine cultivator Cultus provide a very effecting mixing of crop residues, irrespective of field conditions. The new version of the machine, will complement the other versions in the product family.
