Quarantine Units to come into force in Wales on 12 June

T

he Welsh Government has announced that Quarantine Units will be introduced in Wales from 12th June.

The introduction of Quarantine Units (QU) will enable keepers to choose between using an approved QU to manage livestock movements or continuing to adhere to the Six Day Standstill (6DSS) on their whole holding. The Welsh Government is hoping the new arrangements will simplify the standstill regime and allow greater flexibility for livestock keepers, while maintaining movement control to prevent the spread of disease. The cost of certification for 18 months, including VAT, is £172.80 for one QU or £244.80 for two. The Chief Veterinary Officer for Wales, Christianne Glossop added: “The alternative arrangements to the Six Day Standstill were developed at the request of, and in close collaboration with the industry. “They have been worked through systematically, and collaboratively, with the support of Independent Veterinary Risk Assessments. “I am confident this additional flexibility addresses and resolves issues raised

by the industry around the Six Day Standstill whilst not increasing the risk of disease spread”.

transition period for quarantine units and approved isolation facilities allowing both to run in parallel.

'Yet to be convinced'

“The lead in time for these changes is insufficient - it is only in the last month that the necessary information to make an application for quarantine units has become available and for many farmers the work required to meet the requirements of the new rules will take time.”

However, farming union NFU Cymru has reiterated a number of concerns over the detailed rules relating to the implementation of the units. NFU Cymru Deputy President John Davies said: “We have consistently argued for quarantine units to have sensible, practical, workable and cost effective rules. “Whilst we are pleased that quarantine units are now available for all classes of livestock, we are yet to be convinced that the current rules fit our core principles and as such we are committed to feeding back the concerns of our members over issues with the implementation of quarantine units. “After a number of delays Welsh Government confirmed earlier this spring that their intention was to introduce quarantine units from June, with approved isolation facilities being removed at the point of implementation of quarantine units. “Given the short time scale and lack of detailed information on the requirements of quarantine units in the public domain, NFU Cymru requested a

'Practicality' Mr Davies NFU Cymru is pleased to see that quarantine units have been approved for all animals to help mitigate against the impact of the six day rule on farming businesses. He continued: “We remain concerned about the practicality over a number of the detailed rules associated with quarantine units. “This will limit take up of quarantine units, thus restricting the ability of farmers to trade as well as having potential serious impacts on the ability of farmers to be able to take stock to agricultural shows this summer. “These are issues that we have consistently raised with Welsh Government and will continue to do so at every available opportunity.”

AHDB Beef & Lamb is looking for research and industry collaborators to form a five-year Beef Knowledge Partnership focusing on key areas of beef production.

A

AHDB Beef & Lamb is looking for research and industry collaborators to form a five-year Beef Knowledge Partnership focusing on key areas of beef production. The aim of the £1.5 million project is to devise and implement a programme of research, development and knowledge exchange in two key areas: improving youngstock health and reducing losses due to poor health and disease during the production cycle improving efficiency in the use of feed and forages, including updating nutrition standards for beef cattle. The AHDB Beef & Lamb programme will deliver focused, commercially-relevant, innovative research. The project will

also collect information on new technical developments, improved practices and emerging ideas from across the world. An intensive programme of knowledge exchange will accelerate uptake by farmers, in order to prepare for the challenges facing beef producers in the years ahead. Dr Mary Vickers, AHDB Beef & Lamb senior scientist, said: “Mortality and production loss due to disease have a significant impact on the bottom line, and reduce our competitiveness internationally. Increasing pressure to minimise antibiotic use across the livestock industry means that it is more important than ever to focus on proactive cattle health management. “Food and forage use efficiency is another key factor in sustaining a

profitable beef system. Research on beef ration formulation is now 30 years old, so there is a real need for updating through new research. “A partnership approach provides a flexible means for researchers and the beef industry to work collaboratively. “The five-year term of the agreement means the work being undertaken can respond dynamically to new developments or emerging science.” The Knowledge Partnership will be able to expand on existing AHDB collaborations and will be encouraged to access funding from other sources, such as UK Research Councils, Innovate UK and the industry, to add value to levy spend. Further information on the call and the application process can be found on the AHDB Beef & Lamb website.

Brexit: NOAH’s priorities for the UK animal medicines sector

N

OAH has set out the priorities needed to deliver a thriving animal health sector following the UK’s exit from the EU.

Commenting after its Board meeting on 1 November, NOAH Chair Cat Sayer said: “The UK must continue to be a vibrant and innovative animal health market, providing opportunities for animal medicines businesses to thrive. “We are in a strong position in the UK to be a global centre of excellence for animal medicines, supporting both innovative product developments and a regulatory model to benefit both local and international trade. We need to ensure that our industry’s needs and priorities are included in discussions on how the UK exit develops,” she said. Following the UK’s exit from the EU, NOAH stresses the need to ensure that measures are in place to facilitate trade and innovation in the animal medicines sector. Future UK regulation

of veterinary medicines must incentivise product research and development – an environment where companies are encouraged to do business in the UK. “The health and welfare of British animals, as well as our public health and food safety need to be safeguarded – our vets and animal keepers need to continue to have access to a wide range of appropriate animal medicines. “And we must not forget our people. The animal medicines industry has many highly skilled roles. Businesses will continue to need to be able to recruit the best,” said Ms Sayer. NOAH has formed a Brexit Task Force from members of its Board, covering the breadth of the UK animal medicines sector which is working to identify the risks but also the opportunities offered by the UK post EU Exit for its members. It includes both UK based and global company heads. The Task Force will represent members’ views and drive policy forward at this crucial time. NOAH is collaborating with partners

6 | Working Farmer | www.workingfarmer.co.uk

across the animal health sector, including veterinary, human health, agricultural and pets and engaging with relevant government departments to ensure that veterinary medicines are included in future government industrial strategy. “In the UK consumers both encourage and expect high standards of animal welfare in food production and pet owners also want prompt and effective care. UK veterinary surgeons and animal owners need access to a full range of medicines and vaccines to protect animal welfare by preventing disease and treating illness effectively,” added Cat.

nimax launches first sheep bolus with highest trace elements levels

Three of the most important trace elements for sheep can now be delivered in a single bolus thanks to a new product developed by leading UK bolus technology company, Animax Ltd. Tracesure 3-in-1 Sheep & Lamb is the latest addition to Animax’s range of boluses. The company’s veterinary director, Dr Elizabeth Berry, says the product is not only suitable for maintaining normal health, vitality and fertility of adult sheep and rams but can be used on replacement ewe lambs or ram lambs. “Cobalt, selenium and iodine can be given in this combined bolus which has 185mg of cobalt, 100mg of selenium and 660mg of iodine, higher levels than any other bolus on the market!’’ Dr Berry explains. The need for supplementation because of lack of these elements in the diet can be common and necessary with variables including soil type, level of rainfall, grass varieties, forage type and grassland management. Dr Berry says pregnant and growing sheep have a higher need for these trace elements. “They may not obtain enough from their normal diet,’’ she warns. “Tracesure 3-in-1 Sheep & Lamb contains optimum amounts to cover demands during growth, pregnancy and lactation and will provide these for a period of approximately six months.’’

At Troedyrharn, Brecon, fat lamb producer Rob Stephens says the benefits of the bolus is visual and important for flock condition – it is that daily release; he can see the advantages by looking at his flock.

There is also the added advantage that 4g of copper oxide is contained in Tracesure Sheep Traffic Lights, a separate capsule for supplementation in cases of low copper in the diet.

He fattens 1500 store lambs annually. “We buy lean lambs but we don’t quite know their history so we bolus them, it does a phenomenal job.’’

The newly-launched Tracesure 3-in-1 Sheep & Lamb is generating strong sales. Dr Berry says in addition to optimum trace element supplementation, labour efficiency is a key attraction.

He boluses ewes at tupping and at scanning, with the benefit of the application at scanning passing to lambs in the womb and later, through their mother’s milk.

“One bolus, utilising Animax’s unique leaching bolus technology, does the job.’’

‘Hidden heroines’: NFU search for Welsh woman farmer of the year

going out to work to earn extra money - all while juggling childcare, family and farm life.

he search is on for the Wales Woman Farmer of the Year 2017, with the award aiming to celebrate the contribution of women in what is still a very male-dominated industry.

Stephen James, NFU Cymru President said: “Women in farming are the hidden heroines of the industry. “Many of them do not want to claim the limelight but preferring to contribute behind the scenes.

Welsh farming union NFU Cymru is this week launching the competition, which is now in its 21st year. The award aims to celebrate the contribution of women in agriculture. Many farms are now run in partnerships and the ‘farmer’ is not always a man. Anne, Princess Royal has previously paid tribute to women who work behind the scenes in agriculture. Anne said: “For all those ladies working hard behind the scenes, who perhaps don’t have your names on the [business] letterheads, I hope you feel that progress has been made here.” ‘Hidden heroines’ Over the years times have changed and women are not only running farms, but often running a separate business or

Brexit ‘offers great opportunity’ for British beef farmers

T

he chief executive of the National Beef Association (NBA) says Brexit offers a great opportunity for Britain’s beef farmers.

Chris Mallon, who has been the NBA chief executive since 2012, told FarmingUK that leaving the European Union should allow British producers to replace imported beef with meat produced locally to the highest standards in the world. “We are a country that depends on imports at the moment. We have the opportunity after Brexit to replace that with British beef,” said Mr Mallon, who was talking to FarmingUK during the annual Beef Expo event at Stoneleigh in Warwickshire. The NBA’s Beef Expo is an event for the very best in both commercial and pedigree cattle in Britain. It showcases some of the finest examples of British breeding and Chris Mallon said that the quality of British beef is what should make the industry confident about seizing the challenges and opportunities that would emerge from the decision of the United Kingdom to withdraw from the EU. “We produce a very healthy and high quality product in this country,” Mr Mallon said. “That is what consumers want. The British consumer is not going to change overnight from being a well-informed consumer to just buying anything,” he said when asked whether he was concerned about possible trade deals with countries outside the EU opening the UK market to lower quality beef. Low welfare, low standard Some figures in the farming industry have expressed their fears that the Government may be prepared to open up Britain to imports of low welfare, low standard food in return for free trade deals. “We don’t want things like hormone

beef here,” said Mallon. “British farmers want to maintain standards and be world beating. Our Government has to be strong enough to say no to these products. If hormone beef does come in, then we have to make sure that it is labelled clearly so that consumers can see exactly what it is.”

opportunities for British beef producers following Brexit were to be found in the domestic market.

A report by AHDB earlier this year pointed to South America as a possible post-Brexit threat to British beef.

Mr Mallon said that the UK was currently about 70 per cent self-sufficient in beef, so significant volumes of imports found their way onto consumers’ plates. “There is another 30 per cent there that British farmers could be supplying,” he said.

“With the region still holding much untapped potential for increasing productivity, it seems inevitable that the volumes of this low-cost beef on the global market place will increase. This could affect UK producers directly, by competing on the home market, or indirectly via UK export competition,” it said. Fall in value of Sterling The fall in the value of Sterling since the vote to leave the EU has, ironically, helped British exporters, and AHDB’s David Swales has pointed to new opportunities for the meat industry to export to other markets following Brexit. “There is a potentially significant opportunity going forward to establish trade deals where there is growth in the middle class,” he said recently in one report. “At this sort of income level, these consumers will adopt a more Westernised diet, they will have more flexibility over what they spend and will start to eat both meat and dairy products more often. “In the Asia-Pacific area the proportion of these consumers is set to raise sixfold, at the moment there is only one fully-ratified existing agreement in this area, between the EU and South Korea, so there could be major potential for UK trade in the future,” he said. Big opportunities in domestic market Chris Mallon said that export opportunities for the beef industry would be welcome but he felt that the bigger

“Exports are great, especially for the fifth quarter, but we have the best market for beef in the world here in the UK. We need to ensure that it is British beef that supplies that market.”

Chris Mallon the NBA chief executiveChris Mallon the NBA chief executive Driving grain prices The agricultural team at Barclays Bank provided its own take on post-Brexit trade issues in a short analysis in Beef Expo’s event programme. “The effect [is] already seen (positively) in weaker Sterling making imports of beef more expensive to buoy the domestic trade, but also conversely driving up grain price for those needing to buy in grain to finish cattle,” it said. “Likewise, negotiating trade deals - not only for export to ensure British beef is competitive on a global market - but also looking closely at the import side of the equation as far as beef is concerned. “This will be important so that UK produced beef is not at a competitive disadvantage to other world producers, especially with Ireland and other countries, notably South America, who have previously had limited access to UK markets under the wing of the European Union,” said Barclays. This year’s event attracted more than 22 breed societies and more than 250 cattle. Some 120 exhibitors took stands at the show. The event included the National Commercial Cattle Show and the South Devon Performance Championships. It also included the Future Beef Farmer Challenge

New Holland Revamps Mid-Range Tractor Offering

N

ew Holland has revamped its midrange tractor model offering, with a comprehensive line up in the under 120hp segment to suit livestock and mixed farmers. The 17-model tractor offering includes the T5 Electro Command™, recently launched T5 Utility, re-named T4 and existing TD5 ranges. James Emery, New Holland’s midrange tractor product specialist in the UK and Ireland, says: “When the T5000 series was discontinued in 2013 it created a gap in our mid-range offering, particularly for farmers who need a versatile, compact tractor with good power and lift capacity at a reasonable price. The under 120hp sector is important to New Holland and the recent launch of T5 Electro Command™ and T5 Utility ranges ensures our customers can choose a tractor that perfectly suits their business.” New Holland T5 Electo Command 120 Tier 4B The three-model 100 – 120hp T5 Electro Command™ range, winner of Best Utility at Tractor of the Year 2017, features a Tier 4B compliant engine and a number of performance improvements alongside updated styling. Enhanced front suspension, uprated rear lift capacity, heavy-duty axle and 16 x 16 Electro Command™ transmission with auto functions, provide farmers with more flexibility to perform draft work with heavier implements. A loader-

ready option and adjustable shuttle response make materials handling more efficient. Improved visibility in the VisionView™ cab comes courtesy of wide-angle mirrors and LED lighting packages, enhancing operator safety and comfort. The five new T5 Utility models offer between 75 and 114hp and continue the heritage of the well-regarded T5000 series. Farmers can choose between two- or four-wheel drive on all Synchro-Shuttle™ models (fourwheel drive on all others), plus a wide choice of transmissions including Dual Command™, Power Shuttle™, and Creep-speed to suit individual requirements. The T5 Utility is well suited to handling tasks; loader-ready, it supports a maximum lift capacity of up to 2,539kg with a maximum lifting height of 3.7m from New Holland’s 740TL front loader. An optional front linkage, with 1000-speed PTO provides added flexibility. The Heavy Duty (class 1.5) front axle, available on the T5.95, 105 and 115, further enhances load carrying capacity. New Holland T5 Utility The six-model 65 – 115hp TD5 range offers robust design, rugged efficiency and all-rounder simplicity with a comfortable cab designed for long days and good visibility for loader work. At the lower end of the power offering the TD5.65 and TD5.75 feature highly efficient mechanical engines, while TD5.85, TD5.95, TD5.105 and TD5.115 models are complimented by modern, Tier 4A compliant, Common Rail 3.4 litre

F5C powerplants, which have reduced fuel consumption by 10%. New Holland TD5 105 The three-model T4 range, previously named T4 PowerStar™, is powered by a 3.4 litre, Tier 4B compliant Common Rail F5C engine. Precision fuelling enables enhanced response when the engine is placed under load, and fuel savings of up to 13% have been achieved. The flat engine curve between 1900-2100rpm maintains maximum power over a larger working range for improved operational flexibility, especially when working with power hungry implements such as forage wagons. Operator comfort is built-in to the T4’s best-in-class cab and is further enhanced with an optional dedicated baler bar, used to mount incab baler and implement monitors. The new T5 Utility and other models from New Holland’s mid-range will be on display at Grassland and Muck on 24 – 25 May, Royal Highland Show on 22 – 25 June, and Royal Welsh Show 24 – 27 July.

The Importance of Sprayer Testing Everyone will agree that accurate application of pesticides is not only desirable but essential whether for the environment, the consumer or the grower

A

ccurate and targeted use of pesticides is all part of modern agriculture. That’s why back in the mid 90’s the Chemical Application members of the Agricultural Engineers Association (AEA) devised a test for application machinery to make sure it was working as intended. In the early years of 2000 this test became the National Sprayer Testing Scheme as one of the main pillars of the Voluntary Initiative. NSTS now tests around 16,500 machines annually with the test also satisfying the requirements of the Sustainable Use Directive (SUD), which requires that all pesticide application equipment, sprayers, slug pellet applicators, granular applicators etc., need to be tested by 26th November 2016 and at regular intervals thereafter. NSTS is an accepted part of arable agriculture and requirement of the major crop assurance schemes and

supermarket protocols, requiring that farmers and growers have their sprayers inspected annually. This requirement continues with one of the annual tests satisfying the SUD requirements. The NSTS is available through a network of test centres who have qualified examiners available to inspect and confirm the equipment is of the standard required. The test is usually carried out at the machine owner’s premises and at a mutually agreed time. The examiner will charge for the inspection, the cost is commercial at the point of use. Additionally machine owners are free to use their nearest or preferred test centre. The operator or owner of the machine can prepare the sprayer for the test using a test sheet available from the NSTS website. Owners and operators are encouraged to take part in the test and will receive three NRoSO points for doing so. As confirmation of the result of the test the examiner will apply a pass sticker

to the machine and a copy of the test report form will be sent to the owner. Other copies are returned to NSTS Administration where the information is retained on a database of all tested machines. This information is available to Crop Assurance Certification Bodies and others for verification purposes. With the continued threat of more pesticides being lost, now is the time to contribute to accurate and targeted application procedures, NSTS testing helps achieve that. Having a NSTS test will also satisfy the Sustainable Use Directive which requires all sprayers to be tested by 26th November 2016. Find out more by visiting the NSTS website www.nsts.org.uk Duncan Russell NSTS Manager October 2016

LET’S TALK ????????? -4% How #Glyphosate works for us all The withdrawal of approval for glyphosate would entail serious consequences for farmers and our environment

1

Returning to mechanical weed control would impact on lapwing, partridge and skylark nests destroying eggs and young chicks

4

49% more labour would be needed per hectare each year

2

Using glyphosate allows conservation tillage which protects soils. There are 53% more earthworms in no plough systems of cultivation

5

Glyphosate protects 20% of winter wheat and winter oilseed rape yield

8

25% increase in arable crop GHG emissions if glyphosate were no longer available

3

Reintroducing ploughing into non-tillage fields can reduce soil organic matter by 4% in the first 1-6 months

6

Glyphosate use allows 15% more rapeseed and 17% more wheat to be produced

9

Without glyphosate 12 million tonnes of CO2e would be added to our atmosphere (equivalent to emissions from at least 2.5 million cars)

3.4 times the size of London

7

Losing glyphosate would mean 546,000 hectares more land would be needed to grow the same amount of food
