heepWatch UK has been set up as a community response to tackle the growing reports of dog attacks on sheep. It's latest figures this week show over 750 sheep have been killed by dogs since the beginning of the year, and as the walking season begins to get underway, that number looks set to

Youtube, but I think it is a problem that is becoming more regular'. The reasons these attacks are growing can be due to a number of reasons. Firstly there are more houses in rural areas and where the two meet problems often occur, Secondly, more people own dogs - which can be a good thing for encouraging walking but it's not so good if more dogs end up loose with sheep. And thirdly, gardens are still unsecured and there seem to be more dogs loose at night. Bolt all these three together and the problem can be catastrophic as was seen recently in Sussex when 116 sheep were killed.

increase. 'This is not a new problem' said founder Terena Plowright who also runs the South Downs Show ' you can find recordings of John Noakes in the 70's talking about it on

SheepWatchUK is working beside the Kennel Club, the NFU, the Police, the National Sheep Association and others to try and tackle the problem by asking that people please keep dogs on leads when in fields with sheep and to make sure dogs are secure at night, but SheepWatchUK is taking a slightly different angle by working through the community. 'We have just

released a Community Toolkit' said Terena 'which we hope communities will use to provide education to their residents which should in turn help people understand how to protect sheep and the dogs. The vast majority of dog walkers want to walk stress free and would be devastated if their dog attacked a sheep and so keep their dogs on a lead when in a field with sheep, however, as always, it is the minority which cause the disruption and problems for everyone else'. SheepWatchUK wants to bring farmers and dog walkers together to fight the problem and to find solutions that work for everyone. SheepWatch UK is also collecting data from dog attacks on sheep from across the UK and is asking everyone to take the 3 minutes to fill in the report online so they can calculate the truest figure of attacks and discover just how big the problem is. For more information, to register for the toolkit and for the report forms please go to www.terena.co.uk/sheepwatch-uk

CATTLE “ANALYSIS - More needs to be done to ensure more transparency in the supply chain in the UK to produce greater fairness for farmers, processors and retailers”

T

he grocery codes adjudicator needs more powers to ensure that voluntary codes in place with the processing sector at present are enforced. And there needs to be more openness from the retail sector over their own needs, the requirements of the consumer and the demands of the market to allow farmers to produce the products that are required. Speaking at the Westminster Food and Nutrition Forum Keynote Seminar on the Priorities for the UK Supply Chain and the Grocery Codes Adjudicator, Ruth Mason, the chief food chain advisor with the National Farmers’ Union said that there needs to be more transparency in the supply chain to help farmers overcome the increasing volatility they are facing. She said that farmers in the UK are facing unusual market conditions with pig, dairy and wheat prices having fallen by more than 30 per cent each over the last two years. She added that as the industry moves further and further away from the support mechanisms, the volatility in the market is likely to increase. However, Ms Mason said that the ability of farmers to produce what the market demanded was hindered because they were not informed by the retailers about the volumes of product that would be required and where and when the products are required. Farmers

with the processing sector needed to be instituted to help farmers meet the supply chain needs. And she added that in the poultry and horticulture sectors where the farmers are closer to the customer in the supply chain there have been good changes, but these need to be repeated in other parts of the food supply chain. David Lowe, a solicitor with Gowling WLG, said that the grocery code adjudicator had made a real difference to the supply chain, particularly in changing payment practices and demands. However, he said that because the suppliers do not know what they will be paid several years down the line, they have no incentive to invest and the suppliers also have concerns that they will be squeezed on both sides by the demands of the retailer and the needs of the farmer. Jack Ward, the chief executive of the British Growers Association told the seminar that the processors, suppliers and retailers did not take into account the unforeseen challenges to farmers and growers such as weather conditions that change the availability and the volumes of produce. “There is a gap between the realities of growing produce and the expectations of the supply chain,” he said. “All sections of the supply chain need to be working together.” Jan Godsell, professor of operations and supply chain strategy at the University of Warwick said that it

ships and the supply chain had shown there were nine per cent fewer complaints about retail bad practice and supply chain issues in 2014. She said that in the first year of the Grocery Codes Adjudicator eight out of 10 suppliers felt there had been breaches of the code, where as last year the number had fallen to seven out of 10. She said that there has been success in tackling issues of forensic auditing, incidents of “drop and drive” where the way deliveries are made and recorded had allowed retailers to dispute the quantities delivered. She said there had also been progress in the way consumer and producer complaints were being handled. She said there has also been an improvement in suppliers being able to get money back and a reduction in the delays in payments to suppliers by retailers. She said the role of the adjudicator is being reviewed and there are calls for the remit to be extended. At present, the adjudicator vets the actions of the 10 major supermarkets, each with a turnover of more than £1 billion, but she questions whether it would be feasible for also extend the role to cover the 8,000 supermarket suppliers fully. She said the present role of the adjudication does not cover farmers and the main concerns of the farmers are over prices. However, she said that if the role was extended to cover the farming community, she doubted

More Transparency Needed in Supply Chain also had no idea of the price that they would be receiving for their produce. She stressed that there are three key areas that need to be addressed – transparency over volumes, transparency over where and when products are required and transparency over price. She said the farmer, processor and retailer need to be working together. “We need a fair trading relationship,” Ms Mason told the seminar. She said there have to be some parameters for farmers to work in and they must be given they tools to supply the market needs – to supply the goods that the consumers will want and the retailers will sell. She said that some form of more formal code

was necessary for the different partners in the supply chain to work together for the common good. And she hit out at some promotion practices for not taking into account the seasonality of produce and for creating false spikes in trade. On the international markets, Tom Wills the policy officer at Traidcraft said that more needed to be done to prevent unfair trading practices around the world that highlighted other issues such as working conditions, and the needless production of food waste, because of the changes in the demands of the suppliers and retailers. The Grocery Code Adjudication, Christine Tacon said that the last survey of trading relation-

whether pricing would also be covered. This, she said, was the role of the markets and competitions authority. She said the role of the adjudicator was “to tread the fine line between fairness and not affecting the free market”. The results of the current survey of the way the grocery code is being implemented, which is currently be conducted, will be announced in June.

UK Farm Profitability Fell Sharply in 2015, Latest Figures Show That represents the biggest year on year fall since the millennium and latest official statistics shows that farming profitability is at its lowest level since 2007, highlighting the cash flow crisis facing the agricultural industry. A cocktail of higher production around the world, subdued demand due to slowing economies, the strength of sterling in 2015 and over 24 months of falling farmgate prices across the sectors has led to plummeting profitability. For many, the cash flow impact has been exacerbated by the delayed delivery of BPS payments, with farmers still waiting to receive their advance payment. This must be resolved as soon as possible. NFU chief economist and

international affairs adviser Gail Soutar said: “These figures are alarming to say the least. "They remind us that farmers up and down the country and across the majority of sectors are dealing with the impact of devastating cuts in the value of their products. "Lots of farm businesses find themselves in a loss-making situation. If prices and profitability don’t change, it is not just those farms that are at jeopardy, but our food processing sector, our rural communities and the environment. “The numbers must serve as a wakeup call to others in the supply chain and government. We need everyone in the food supply chain to intensify their efforts to back British farmers. "For example we

UK - The profitability of UK farming fell by a staggering 29 per cent in 2015, a loss of over £1.5 billion, according to the National Farmers Union (NFU)

need longer term relationships that deliver some certainty on pricing and give farmers the confidence that food production can be profitable. And we need government to do all it can including making sure that farmers don’t face the same crippling delays to farm payments that they have in 2015, with immediate action for those still waiting for 2015 payments to arrive. “The latest NFU farmer confidence survey of its members has this week also confirmed that both short and medium-term confidence has fallen to the lowest level since this 6 monthly survey began in 2010. “Profitability and industry confidence are closely related. That confidence also impacts investment levels in the agri-food supply chain, and indirectly on jobs and economic growth. The effects of the downturn in farming profitability are not just confined to the sector itself but will also have a knock-on impact on the wider economy and rural communities.”

The oats area will allow visitors to discuss variety selection, plant breeding, markets and agronomy with experts. Variety selection At the heart of the RL area, a team of experts will be on hand to help you make sense of the RL in your unique growing/market situation. The variety selection feature will also allow visitors to discuss how ‘relative risk’ can be used to select resilient varieties that perform well under variable conditions. Such varieties can help take some of the risks out of growing crops but can lead to growers needing to make tough decisions – such as the decision to do nothing and skip a spray and bank the associated costs. To help explain the concept of relative risk, the winter wheat plots have been opened up to expose the treated and untreated crops, to reveal the crop’s inbuilt defences against disease and lodging. Experts will also be on hand to discuss how

New VW Amarok gets fresh look and 3.0 V6 diesel engine range

Volkswagen reveals its Amarok pick-up facelifted for 2016 with new 3.0 TDI engine in three power outputs

V

W has released images and details of its newly updated Amarok. The facelifted pick-up bucks the trend for downsizing by ditching the 2.0 TDI diesels for a new 3.0-litre V6 unit. To help the Amarok take on the latest Ford Ranger, Nissan Navara and Mitsubishi L200, Volkswagen has thrown out the old four-cylinder diesel unit. Instead, the 3.0-litre six-cylinder unit is available in three power outputs: 161bhp, 201bhp and 221bhp. With up to 550Nm of torque in 221bhp guise (up from 420Nm in the old 2.0 BiTDI diesel) the engine should deliver significantly improved performance, but it also now meets the latest Euro 6 emissions regulations. The Amarok is available in three powertrain layouts: Rear wheel-drive only, front-wheel drive with selectable four-wheel drive or

Permanent 4MOTION four-wheel drive that’s available only with the ight-speed automatic gearbox. A key benefit of this engine is also an improved overall towing capacity. Fitted with four-wheel drive, top spec models will be capable of pulling 3.5-tonnes, up from 3.2-tonnes of the existing version, matching the Navara and beating the L200. Despite the performance boost, the Amarok manages to drop just under the 200g/ km of CO2 barrier with the eight-speed auto, and offers as much as 37mpg. VW is now also offering ‘Servotronic’ variable-ratio steering on the Amarok that supposedly makes it more precise, while larger brakes ensure a reduced stopping distance. Exterior updates are limited to a revised front bumper, extra chrome on the front grille, smarter alloy wheel designs and

darkened rear tail-lamps, while new ‘4MOTION’ decals and V6 badging feature. The options list has been extended further, with more styling bars, load covers and hardtops available. Inside, a revise dashboard features, although we are yet to see images of it yet, while the seats have been redesigned for a more ergonomic shape. Post-collision braking is now standard-fit, too. The UK pick-up sector has never been busier and it’s about to become more so with the new Toyota Hilux on the way, plus Renault, Fiat, Mercedes and Peugeot/Citroen all with models in the pipeline. It means the revised VW Amarok will have a challenge securing sales. Prices have yet to be announced but buyers will be able to order the updated Amarok model in September.
