STUDIO PRACTICE Statement of Intent Name Blog Address Jessie Mary Broad Date May 2016 http://j-‐broad1316sp.blogspot.co.uk Rationale I want to challenge and push myself with some of these briefs; this is so that by the end of the year I can feel more of an all rounded and have a broadly applicable skillset. I want to improve my work ethic and my ability to turn around a brief. I also want to get a better at professionally presenting my work and myself. By the end of this year I would be very happy if I had produced some work that was communicative/emotionally engaging. To refine and tailor my practice, especially in accordance with my PPP. Themes / Subjects -‐ Communication through drawing, and brining light to information. (Such as medical instructions). -‐ Myself as an illustrator, self development and honing in a skillset that I can leave with and feel confident to apply to a whole host of things and problems. -‐ There is a bit of a ‘trying to change the world for the healthier’ feel coming across from many of these briefs. -‐ Wildlife -‐ Beauty -‐ Responsive Briefs. Products / Methods of Distribution Screen-‐prints, and analogue based printing. Online presence, improve blogging and updating sites such as Instagram and Tumblr in an effort to encourage myself to create finished work and to get myself out there. Zines/leaflets and small books are all things that I would like to produce more of and get more competent and creating.
Practical Skills / Media / Formats
In order to improve my screen-‐printing and analogue skills, I want to produce at least one of my briefs using this outcome. I also want to become more proficient with Photoshop, so I will be sure to put as much of my artwork through it as possible. I would also very much like to better my composition, by some use of much more effective thumb nailing (it would be silly to leave art college without this skill really). I’m also going to try to use my characters more, with the intention of improving them and honing them into a useful addition to my general skillset. I’d like to come to grasps with the basics of InDesign at least so I can get into the swing of laying out books if I want to. I want to continue to develop and work with ink as a medium. Expand my drawings into a beautiful practice! Brief 1: Deadline War Horse Rationale: 3 Illustrations, each to of a different scene from the book and design a binding. Requirements, they must be portrait. This should be inspired by the books overall tones and themes. This is very much a responsive brief, responding to a live problem/requirement. In addition to this I also decided to take this brief forward and apply it to a range of book marks that are promotional for The Folio Society. Brief 2: Deadline Stormzy/Travelling Man Rationale:
Produce an A2 portrait piece to a restricted colour pallet. To make this a challenging brief I want to produce a screen print of a grime artist, this is because I have no experience of screen printing and want to get a chance to improve, I love grime but am rubbish at portraits it’s the ultimate challenge. This will push myself to produce some work that is different and that hopefully I can be pleased about. It might also be a bit of exposure for me, not only because the exhibition but also there is a big rise in interest in the Grime music scene, I think that as a result this might spark some interest in this piece and maybe my work online. The original brief to this was developed, out from that of creating an image that was a big challenge to me (A facial portrait and a screen print, both thins I had no experience in), into creating a range of products and considering how I can apply my imagery and artwork in a very diverse and functional to the fan base way. Brief 3: Deadline Chrispin Orthotics Design a pattern or imagery for any of the range of prosthetics and orthotics produced by Chrispin Orthotics. They need a brand revival as current designs are poor and dated and not appealing or suitable for their young adult/teenager range. Rationale:
This was a live competition brief that surfaced partway through this project, so I took it on over some of my other non live self set briefs which could be completed at any time. Additional Project Proposals:
This project gives an opportunity to practice more with applying designs to product and taking into all of the considerations that goes with designing such products.
Brief 4:
Deadline
Inktober/Creatures Rationale: An ink drawing a day, or two, everyday of October. This is because ink is a medium that I love and relish in using but I find myself lazy and not inclined to do enough drawing. This will force me to be proactive and as a result I will have a body of ink drawings that I can reflect on and enjoy. I also hope it will improve me; consider this cardio for the illustrator. This brief evolved into the one that is called ‘Creatures’. I found through producing ink drawings everyday my practice improved ten-‐fold, I also found that I favoured drawing animals. This lead to a new One-‐a-‐week brief being formed, which consisted of me working on and drawing a different animal every week. The aims were to keep me drawing and improving. Especially in with my interest in exploring wildlife illustration. This will then be resolved by applying it to the context of a WWF campaign that can exist in a varied range of settings. Brief 5: Deadline Secret 7 Rationale: This was a responsive brief that came live during to the year to produce anonyms cover designs for a range or different artist and songs and submit them to a live competition element This aimed to get me producing a varied range of work quite quickly, an area where I can practice applying my skills as an illustrator in a controlled setting. Off the back of this I developed a range of gift cards from the supporting imagery Brief 6: Deadline Bloop Rationale: This was a responsive brief that came up later on during the year. It is a collaborative group project. It offered fantastic opportunities including: • Working with successful and original Children’s Magazine Publisher, Cathy Olmedillas. • Organizing, planning, inventing and running an interactive children’s workshop. • Team collaboration. • Creating Branding and promotion for the group ‘Bloop.’ Brief 7 SEA – This Is my Big Kahuna and is expanded upon in a separate brief form.
Briefs that have not come to anything and have been dropped (and why): Arctic Tern To Produce illustrations for 4 pages of this book, and a front and back cover. The original intent was for my friend and I to write a children’s storybook with a rare and incredible arctic tern as the protagonist. So the illustrations must be touching, and also engaging for children. This brief was just too big in the end and sadly I didn’t manage to keep it up alongside my other briefs. Also the nature of it was very similar in terms of scope to my initial Big Kahuna brief and my continuous Creatures brief, so in the end I decided that it wasn’t worth compromising the quality on any of my other work or on this in order to achieve this in time, especially when the same practices and skills were being developed and put into action by my other briefs. Illustrating Medical Information I want to use character drawing/drawing as a form of communicating big or difficult medical information, this is because I am very interested in the human condition and I’m very empathetic, I want to help. Also I like the experience of trying to wield my drawings into something touching and useful. This will help hone my drawing into more of a useful and refined tool of communication. As a result I hope to maybe find an area that I can continue to pursue as an occupations. This brief was aimed to be a weekly thing but as I already had my creatures brief in place I found that I did not have the time, I also found that the initial constraints that I set myself for this were too vague, which also let this brief down. I am sad and disappointed with myself that I did not manage to push myself to achieve results from this brief, as it offered to develop parts of my practice which were proving successful towards the end of level 5 but sadly have not really managed to surface this year. Bright Futures Bright future is a movement began by Unilever, which believes that we can all live in a world that is sustainable and everyone gets to live well. Do something that inspires our society to create a brighter future. Work needs to be eye opening and thought provoking. It should make people think about how to positively impact our world now for future generations, it will inspire them to take action and get engaged in bright futures. I scrapped this brief as the brief was just too vague, and I did not see it profitable towards my practice.
