STUDIO PRACTICE Statement of Intent Name Blog Address Jessie Broad Date 9.10.15 j-‐broad1316sp.blogspot.co.uk Rationale I want to challenge and push myself with some of these briefs; this is so that by the end of the year I can feel more of an all rounded and broadly applicable skillset. I want to improve my work ethic and my ability to turn around a brief. I also want to get a better at professionally presenting my work and myself. By the end of this year I would be very happy if I had produced some work that was communicative and emotionally engaging. Themes / Subjects -‐ Communication through drawing, and brining light to information. (Such as medical instructions). -‐ Myself as an illustrator, self development and honing in a skillset that I can leave with and feel confident to apply to a whole host of things and problems. -‐ There is a bit of a ‘trying to change the world for the healthier’ feel coming across from many of these briefs. Products / Methods of Distribution Screen-‐prints, and analogue based printing. Online presence, improve blogging and updating sites such as instagram and tumblr in an effort to encourage myself to create finished work and to get myself out there. Zines/leaflets and small books are all things that I would like to produce more of and get more competent and creating.
Practical Skills / Media / Formats
In order to improve my screen-‐printing and analogue skills, I want to produce at least one of my briefs using this outcome. I also want to become more proficient with Photoshop, so I will be sure to put as much of my artwork through their as possible. I would also very much like to better my composition, by some use of much more effective thumb nailing (it would be silly to leave art college without this skill really). I’m also going to try to use my characters a lot more, with the intention of improving them and honing them into a useful addition to my general skillset. I’d like to come to grasps with the basics of InDesign at least so I can get into the swing of laying out books if I want to. I want to continue to develop and work with ink as a medium. Brief 1: Deadline War Horse 9AM 18th January Rationale: 3 Illustrations, each to of a different scene from the book and design a binding. Requirements, they must be portrait. This should be inspired by the books overall tones and themes. This is very much a responsive brief, responding to a live problem/requirement. Brief 2: Deadline Travelling Man 5th November Rationale: Produce an A2 portrait piece to a restricted colour pallet. To make this a challenging brief I want to produce a screen print of a grime artist, this is because I have no experience of screen printing and want to get a chance to improve, I love grime but am rubbish at portraits it’s the ultimate challenge. This will push myself to produce some work that is different and that hopefully I can be very pleased about. It might also be a bit of exposure for me, not only because the exhibition but also there is a big rise in interest in the Grime music scene, I think that as a result this might spark some interest in this piece and maybe my work online.
Brief 3:
Deadline Bright Futures Rationale: Bright future is a movement began by Unilever, which believes that we can all live in a world that is sustainable and everyone gets to live well. Do something that inspires our society to create a brighter future. Work needs to be eye opening and thought provoking. It should make people think about how to positively impact our world now for future generations, it will inspire them to take action and get engaged in bright futures. This brief has the potential/has every essence of a ‘big kahuna’ brief, but as it is a competition brief by nature it is a responsive challenge. Tone = playful, uplifting and optimistic. Be solution focuses but have a ball. Brief 4: Deadline Illustrating Medical information
Rationale:
I want to use character drawing/drawing as a form of communicating big or difficult medical information, this is because I am very interested in the human condition and I’m very empathetic, I want to help. Also I like the experience of trying to wield my drawings into something touching and useful. This will help hone my drawing into more of a useful and refined tool of communication. As a result I hope to maybe find an area that I can continue to pursue as an occupations. This is the type of brief that I should make to be a piece per week as that would be the best way to see myself improve, however I also think that a crossover between authorial /process driven briefs can be identified here. Brief 5: Deadline April Arctic Tern Book Rationale: To Produce illustrations for 4 pages of this book, and a front and back cover. The original intent was for my friend and I to write a children’s storybook with a rare and incredible arctic tern as the protagonist. So the illustrations must be touching, and also engaging for children. I was not sure which category of brief this could be classified as, If it were the full book I was setting out to create I would probably consider it a bit of a ‘big kahuna’ brief, but as it is not that it is an authorial and process driven one. Additional Project Proposals Inktober, an ink drawing a day, or two, everyday of October. This is because ink is a medium that I love and relish in using but I find myself lazy and not inclined to do enough drawing. This will force me to be proactive and as a result I will have a body of ink drawings that I can reflect on and enjoy. I also hope it will improve me; consider this cardio for the illustrator.
