MOTH CLUB

Hackney

M E E T

Born and raised in Norwich, after being one of the very few DIY riot grrrl bands in the city. Their support for the band Cabbage, has really kick-started their career. Now leaving there Norwich routes and playing the GRRRL ZINE FAIR in the Moth Club, Hackney. The girls released their first single, 'Mission Impossible' which is ultimately an explosive punk combination of struggling with third wave feminism and politics. After being told that they would struggle to find any success because apparently 'being a girl in band never really works'. Peach Club began to scream their opinion on the lack of female punk bands in a music industry which is so dominated by capitalism and a lack of equality for women. To pledge full support to the GRRRL Zine fair, which was an independently run event by a feminist and zine maker herself , entirely for free! Peach Club started the after party with a bang. Creative zine makers and punk supporters came together to celebrate all things female and proving Doing it Yourself really is easy. Turnover zine got together with the band after their set, to ask them about their recent singles and their take on being a DIY band in 2017.

Can you tell us a little about yourselves, how you guys met and what role you each play in the band?

Hey, We're Charlie (bass) , Katie (vocals), Amanda (Bass), and Rebecca (drums), four girls from Norwich. We all met at a party one night and decided to meet the following day to have a jam together and we clicked instantly. We share passion and interests about feminist subculture and it's totally expressed in Katie's lyrics making our genre riot grrrl / activist.

How would you describe your music style?

Our music channels the anger people are feeling about the world right now. In line with the DIY ethic of punk, we merge riot grrrl with our running motifs of feminism and empowerment to create our own sound. We like to describe it as new wave riot grrrl as the lyrics are more inclusive compared to sounds of the underground movement in the 90's. I think we will evolve as the world evolves, as new issues will arise so will the music scene.

What's been your favourite part about starting a band so far?

Charlie: I love playing the small venues in town and seeing all our friends in the crowd supporting us, its fun just to hang out and watch everyone have a great time. Rebecca: I think today's been pretty cool, playing London shows was one of our main goals and supporting the whole feminism creative culture is something we really relate to and love being involved with. The arrival of Peach Club couldn’t be more fortuitously timed. As more and more riot grrrl bands come to prominence, there’s the tight DIY bond on the scene that exists again, with spaces showcasing emerging talents, mixed in with the zine writing community and discourse on what it means to be feminist in 2017.

Peach Club's single 'Mission Impossible' and EP 'The Bitch Diaries' is out now on Spotify and Bandcamp.

Sports Day RECORDS

T U R N O V E R

MEET SPORTS DAY'S PRODUCER, ARTIST AND DIY SCENESTER Sports Day Records dropped their first release last Friday. The 'RELAY' compilation tape , with tracks from surf pop three piece 'The Orielles', lowfi indie rock 'Hovvdy' and lo-fi synth punk band 'Sad,Rad'. Reflecting on the DIY music scene in all its variety and glory. Can you tell us a little about Sports Day and how you got started?

we throw parties, put out tapes, book artists that we want to see and just generally play music with friends. We kicked off the label with our first compilation tape and had been collecting tapes for a bit after, rediscovering them through Bandcamp.

How would you describe the ethos of Sports Day in three words? DO IT YOURSELF.

What kind of genres can we find on a Sports Day Cassette Tape?

It's mainly alternative/indie, with very laidback tracks. We've got Hovvdy whose a lowfi indie pop artist and then there's Alex Napping, a quartet creating storytelling with a beat.

Favourite way to listen to music? (Cassette, vinyl, CD, streaming?)

I mean I love listening to vinyl's, CD’s and streaming services I don’t really use much, I’ll listen to some tracks on YouTube for accessibility but it’s not always the best sound quality. A lot of my old CD collection got either lost, borrowed or scratched, which just hasn’t been the case with the majority of my tapes and records plus the sound is better and more raw.

Where do you find the inspiration when designing the cassette art work?

Well I study illustration at uni, so I translated a lot of my work onto making the cassette designs. I wanted to make them represent what the music was like, So a lot of the art work is using bright colours and paint. I also think the outer appearance of the cassette adds to a better experience; being able to add a more visually pleasing tape in your collection.

What do you prefer about the DIY ethic?

To be honest I don't know why everyone isn't doing it themselves. There are so many big production companies who are taking the genuine talent and creativity out of both the art world and the music industry. It's also so easy nowadays for anyone to publish there work especially with the popularity of social media. My online presence allows me to arrange music events, sell my art work while still promoting the artists that are signed to Sports Day. The DIY ethic is so inclusive, without it there would be no individuality.
