MYANMAR ASIA

Myanmar, formally known as Burma, is a country jaded in tradition, and in the midst of a social and economic change, predominantly concentrated in the larger cities. The first democratically elected government, after half a century, was in 2015. The previous military ruling powers of the country are less predominant in power, but still play a role in politics. Being on the border to China, India, Bangladesh, Laos and Thailand, the nation is home to multiple ethnic groups. Walking through the streets the culture maintains unchanged, with people wearing longyi’s, chewing betel nut and faces smothered in thanakha.

YANGON MYANMAR Yangon, formally known as Rangoon, is the largest city in Myanmar. The city is a gallery of the most impressive colonial architecture, now decaying with beautiful elegance. As the occupiers of the buildings allow plants to form on the architecture, the cities connection to nature is ever present. The modernist architecture juxtaposes the history of the city, creating a thought provoking transition from one building to the next.

BAGAN MYANMAR Bagan, is a peaceful site, embroidered with a sea of pagoda’s made from tradition brick. The pagoda’s remain after they were built on the land of each family who had once lived in Bagan. The landscape remains untouched by the ‘modern’ architecture which crowds the larger cities. The small villages are built with traditional methods, from local material, enhancing the humble beauty of the place.

MANDALAY MYANMAR Mandalay, once the home to the royal families of Myanmar, is now a city colliding with new and old traditions. The U Bein Bridge is located in Mandalay, it is a 1.2 km long teak bridge, emulating the presence and importance of teak in shaping the country. It was built around 1850, and remains the oldest teak bridge in the world. Its beauty can best be seen at the break of dawn, when it begins to become the passage way for all walks of life, from monks to children.
