About this Guide Every day, thousands of students are exposed to UT RecSports. Each impression represents the Division’s identity. The logo and style guidelines unify our communications and help ensure a clear, strong, consistent message. This Divisional Logo and Print Guidelines provide samples and directions for RecSports logo usage and University of Texas at Austin brand standards. As a department within The University of Texas at Austin, the Division of Recreational Sports adheres to the visual guidelines established by the Office of Public Affairs, as well as the guidelines listed in this publication.

Nomenclature: Division of Recreational Sports The consistent use of the Division of Recreational Sports name provides the Division with greater recognition on campus.

The recommended designations for the Division are: Formal– Division of Recreational Sports (preferred) Second reference– RecSports (internal) or UT RecSports (external) When used in copy the complete name “Division of Recreational Sports” should be used upon first mention. Thereafter, “the Division” or “RecSports” may be employed in reference to the organization.

Formal

The official title of the organization is Division of Recreational Sports. This format should be used for formal situations. Some examples include formal publications such as, but not limited to; annual reports, external documents, reports of any kind, external signage, legal documents and letterheads.

Informal

The informal title of the organization is (UT) RecSports. Some examples of usage include informal publications such as, but not limited to; staff handbooks, giveaways, internal signage, flyers, marketing materials, etc. “UTRS� is an acceptable abbreviation for equipment identification.

RecSports Graphic Elements RecSports logos are the visual design for easy and definitive recognition. When using the logo in any print and online communications such as advertising, marketing or promotional applications, the following requirements must be met:

• Be sure the RecSports logo is fully and clearly visible. • Maintain a clear space, free of any text or graphics around the logo. • Use only the logo-provided artwork for the RecSports logo. • Scale the logo as needed but do not alter the proportions or elements of the logo in any way. • When reproduced in color the logo should always appear in The University of Texas at Austin signature color, burnt orange (PMS 159), or black and white. • Graphic filters, such as dropshadows, bevels, 3-D effects, embosses or glows should not be applied to these logos. • Any manipulation or alteration is strictly prohibited. These logos are to be reproduced without modification.

Trademarked Longhorn through a star. Produced in burnt orange (PMS 159 or 166), black or white.

Official Star Logo (with text)

Trademarked Longhorn through a star with “RecSports� underneath. Can be produced in burnt orange (PMS 159 or 166), black or white.

Due to the complexity of the star logo, this logo can not be produced smaller than 1 inch in diameter.

RecSports Graphic Elements: Alternative Logos Circular Logo

Trademarked Longhorn through a star with necessary information wrapped around the logo in a circle. Can be produced in burnt orange (PMS 159 or 166), black or white.

Trademarked Longhorn through “RecSports�

Used for informal applications such as student staff shirts, staff handbooks, giveaways and advertisements. Can be produced in burnt orange (PMS 159 or 166), black or white.

Other RecSports Logos Outdoor Recreational Logo

Created in 1988 by Pete Schaack, the outdoor recreation logo is used for Outdoor Recreation items.

Sustainability Logo

The sustainability logo is used to promote sustainability efforts for the Division.

Diversity Logo

Logo Hierarchy for Printed Materials On Primary Publications:

On Secondary Publications:

1) The University of Texas at Austin wordmark will be present.

1) Division of Recreational Sports or UT RecSports

Examples of primary publications include: the semesterly Schedule, the Annual Report, survey reports, etc.

2) Division of Recreational Sports or UT RecSports

(depending on the scope of the project) will be prominent on the publication. The logo will be used when appropriate.

Examples of secondary publications include: program brochures, advertisements, flyers, etc. Most of our secondary publications are internal.

RecSports Taglines: The Division of Recreational Sports has two taglines: 1) Education Through Recreation 2) Continuing a University Tradition/ Celebrating a University Tradition (Anniversary Years) These taglines are used on formal documents, such as letterhead, development proposals, Annual Reports, etc.

RecSports Collateral Guidelines: Apparel All apparel will include: UT RecSports or Recreational Sports or Division of Recreational Sports. It can be represented with text or one of the approved logos. The title and/or logo chosen for the design will be based on what the design is for, who the intended target audience is and how the shirt will be distributed. For staff apparel: The University’s watermark will be included, per University guidelines. For non-staff apparel: “The University at Texas at Austin� will be included whenever possible and/or appropriate with text or one of the approved logos. RecSports Collateral Guidelines: Promotional Items Due to the complexity of the official logo, the communications staff will work with individuals to design an appropriate image for promotional items. This may include a typographical solution and/or a graphic element that can be easily reproduced.

Important: Do not use JPEG versions of the logo larger than intended specifications, as it results in an unacceptable loss of quality.

Nomenclature: The University of Texas at Austin The consistent use of The University of Texas at Austin name plays a critical part in the University’s identity system. The recommended designations for the University are: Formal–The University of Texas at Austin (preferred) Second reference–the University When used in copy the complete name “The University of Texas at Austin” should be used upon first mention. Thereafter, “the University” may be employed to reference the University. The formal name of the University must be on all legal documents as well as University publications. UT Graphic Elements: Official Wordmark The University of Texas at Austin wordmark is the primary means by which we are recognized and should appear on as many forms of communication as possible. The wordmark has been specially drawn and spaced and must never be redrawn or changed. The wordmark should never be stacked or positioned in any way, other than that designated by the guidelines. UT Graphic Elements: Longhorn Logo Must be produced in burnt orange (PMS 159 or 166), black or white. The logo is to be reproduced without modification or addition. Graphic filters, such as dropshadows, bevels, 3-D effects, embosses or glows should not be applied to the Longhorn logo. Any manipulation or alteration to the Longhorn logo is strictly prohibited.

Use of the Longhorn logo is prohibited without written consent from the Office of Trademark Licensing.

UT Collateral Guidelines: Apparel Per University guidelines, “The University of Texas at Austin” should be included on apparel. Recreational Sports will follow this guideline whenever possible. In May 2009, Trademarks and Licensing met with Recreational Sports staff and determined that any staff apparel must contain “The University of Texas at Austin” wordmark. Additionally, if the apparel will be sold, it should include “The University of Texas at Austin” wordmark. The wordmark must have TM on the artwork.

UT requires that all designs for apparel be reviewed by Trademarks and Licensing.

The Longhorn logo can be distributed by the communications department upon request.

Typography The University’s typographic identity is visible across many applications, including print, electronic and environmental displays. To communicate in a consistent tone, type selections have been made that best represent the voice of the University. RecSports uses these fonts. The Garamond Regular typestyle adds a strong representational quality to the words we use. Garamond Regular Alternate font: Times New Roman The Univers 45 Light typestyle was specifically designed to express a contemporary feel and imply a knowledgeable modern voice. Univers 45 Light Alternate font: Helvetica

Do set type:

• in upper and lower case • using bold and italic for emphasis • ranged left • with plenty of surrounding white space • keep punctuation to a minimum

Do not set type:

• in all capitals • that has been condensed or expanded • with additional inter-character spacing • in other typefaces

The University of Texas at Austin’s logotype is written in all capitals. When written in text, the name should appear in upper and lower case letters.

Current Design Theme In recent years, the Division of Recreational Sports has adopted an annual theme to maintain a visible identity across many applications. This theme is used on informal documents, such as publicity materials, apparel, advertisements, etc. Developing and implementing these elements sets the tone, style and design for the academic year. The 10/11 design theme is “____Starts Here”. Examples include: Fun Starts Here, Fitness Starts Here, Teamwork Starts Here. This campaign correlates with the motto of the University, ”What Starts Here Changes the World.”

Marketing has compiled a list of words to describe the different programs. i.e. “Teamwork Starts Here” for Sports Clubs.

Macro photography is used to show a close up view of the things you would encounter when participating in RecSports.
