“a lot of brides focus on detail, and we take the time to make every little thing just right.”

whether it’s the traditional rose, elegant lily, or vibrant orchid, your wedding’s floral décor

can make a lasting impression that is as memorable as it is lovely. From awe-inspiring centerpieces to the blooms that will cascade your host sanctuary’s pews—not to mention the bouquets your bridesmaids will be holding— each flower plays a special part in your big day. Whatever your choice of style, be it funky and whimsical or classic and straightforward, you’ll want to make certain you are securing the utmost “wow” for your dollar. Therefore, it is extremely important to pick a florist that not only understands the importance of getting things

just right, but can deliver on these wishes to the T. Bussey’s Florist, located at 302 Main Street in Cedartown, is a grassroots kind of operation with a knowledgeable staff that has nearly 125 years wedding experience combined. Secondgeneration owner Todd Bussey makes it his business to stay in stride with the latest floral wedding trends, just as his parents did when they first opened in 1976. Atop being a seasoned bridal vet, Bussey is an active member

of the American Institute of Floral Designers and takes great pride in making sure each petal is tailored to his customers’ desires. In fact, The Knot, a wellknown bridal magazine, has awarded his outfit a “best of ” nod for its impeccable arrangement work the last two years running. “We are all about full service,” Bussey beams. “From the first consultation to the day of the wedding, everything we do is geared to what the bride wants and needs. We take different elements, from the style of the gown to the colors the bride has chosen, to make everything fit seamlessly.” From a tactical standpoint, Bussey’s blueprint usually begins with the composition of the bride’s bouquet. It then moves to the bridesmaids’ arrangements, table décor and so forth, all in an effort to harmonize each ceremony’s respective color scheme, unique sense of style and overall texture. “A lot of brides focus on detail,” Bussey explains, “and we take the time to make every little thing just right… We can sit down and talk

with [her] and her family about those important details, and, from there, make everything appear if it has happened by magic.” To ensure that even the rarest of hand-picked flowers appear faultless and fresh, Bussey’s also works in collaboration with several renowned vendors from around the globe. “If it is in season or if there is availability for the product, we will get it,” Bussey says with a smile. “No problem.” Bussey’s also carries one of the finest lines in wedding registry, Juliska. With stem and glassware hand-blown in the hills outside Prague, as well as gorgeous ceramics fired by Portuguese artisans, Juliska is a staple brand that embodies the beauty of European craftsmanship. Chic, elegant, crisp and modern, Juliska’s lines have multiple pieces fit for every bride. Oh, and if you plan on tying the knot with a tighter budget, think nothing of it. Bussey’s namesake assures that he will provide his shop’s awardwinning services—all packaging customized, complete with that magical Bussey’s touch—at a more than fair rate. The sunny atrium lobby is lined with charming shops, also visible from Second Avenue, including art and photography galleries, a personal fitness studio, a lingerie and bath boutique, and a full service beauty salon.

GREENE’SJEWELERS deciding to propose is an enormous, and sometimes painstaking, decision. whether

you choose to go with the day’s trends or a more classic style, when it comes to finding the perfect ring, it is still extremely important to know the “four C’s” of diamonds: clarity, cut, color and carat weight. However, there is a fifth “C” of which you may not have been previously aware: confidence. Greene’s Jewelers, nestled in the heart of downtown Rome, defines confidence as “knowledge based on trust”. With jewelry, as in everything else, you get what you pay for, and Greene’s can ensure confidence with every transaction. Greene’s can also confidently say that they have something special for your bride. We all know that diamonds have been called “a girl’s best friend”, especially when they are a gift

from the man she loves, and when choosing the perfect engagement ring, there are a few style points to keep in mind. “We’ve got a great selection of the latest trends,” says Greene’s Elaine Manning-Abercrombie. “The princess cut has been popular for some time, but round solitaires are romantic classics. Vintage settings are very sought after these days, as they add a touch of old-world romance, and modern pieces are also in style. Platinum and white gold are also big right now, but yellow gold is slowly making a comeback. “Here at Greene’s, we carry a large variety of…diamonds to create that special, one-of-a-kind

After you’re married, your relationship can experience continued confidence, particularly in knowing that Greene’s will help with any additional jewelry purchases throughout the years. “Confidence in your jeweler will decrease your anxiety,” says Manning-Abercrombie, “and our goal is to ensure your satisfaction for years to come.” In November 1948, P.H. Greene, Sr. set the stage for his son, George, and wife, Thelma Tate Greene, to create this landmark local jeweler. It has remained a family-owned

operation since, one with the both the reputation and experience to help establish that ever so important sense of selfassurance, as daughters Joyce Greene-Manning and Sarah Greene-Brock took the reins in 1990. Manning-Abercrombie, a fourth-generation Greene jeweler, has been there since 1984. In turn, Greene’s is a business based around family values. As a 39-year member of the American Gem Society, and with two full-time, certified gemologists, Greene’s adheres to a philosophy of customer satisfaction that does not end when you leave the store. Their experience, education and expertise shows through their merchandising and customer service, and with the utmost “confidence”, it is a local name you can trust. VVV

so, you want to look perfect for your big day. do you have the right hairdresser

for your perfect do? check. the top nail techniician for that perfect mani-pedi combo? check. but what about a visit to the best esthetician in town? In doing your best to prevent those pre-wedding blemishes, Northwest Georgia Dermatology’s Julie Johnson has some wonderful ideas to keep your skin looking gorgeous. All you need to do is start the following regimen. Step 1: According to Johnson, six months prior to your wedding, the first thing you should be thinking about is a quality SPF 30 sunscreen or sunblock. “Good skin starts with good skin care,” she says. “The best thing to do is come in for a complimentary skin analysis to see what is best for your skin type and your skin condition.” At this time, you should also consider correcting any sun damage with a hydroquinone treatment—i.e., a skin lightener that helps correct hyperpigmentation and retinoids. “Just remember that great skin takes time, and that, at first,

12

there may be some redness with retinol or hydroquinone,” says Johnson. “But keep with it for right now, because the end result will be worth it.” If needed, laser hair removal is also important during this period, as well as chemical exfoliations and microderm abrasion. Step 2: At three months prior to your wedding date, Johnson suggests, “Keep continuing what you’re doing, and be consistent. You want make sure your skin is as healthy as it can be, so keep your appointments for chemical exfoliations [and/or] microderm abrasions, and even laser hair removal, and give your skin the time it needs to heal and stay healthy.” And don’t forget to continue using that protective SPF, as a lot of the aforementioned treatments could make your skin more susceptible to sunburn.

photos by sabrina wilson Step 3: If you feel you need Botox or fillers, Johnson says this is the best time to start. “Botox and fillers last [anywhere from] three to six months, so to look absolutely picture perfect, it’s best that you don’t do them too early or too late.” And keep with the previous steps, as well. Step 4: Just a few days away until the day. Nervous yet? Johnson says don’t be, because the time has come to cut the retinoids and hydroquinone from your regimen and adhere only to the milder applications. “You’re already nervous, so you don’t need to be adding to any irritation,” Johnson warns. “You especially need to stop if you plan [to visit] a tropical destination for your honeymoon, because of the sun sensitivity they can cause.” She adds that the 10-day mark is the best time to begin using

any self-tanning agents (Johnson recommends Fake Bake-brand products to avoid that dreaded orange tint), and whatever you do, stay away from those tanning beds. Step 5: Relax. Don’t do anything drastic. Johnson says the worst mistake a bride-to-be can make is thinking quick-fix products will help. In fact, most over-the-counter quick-fixers can increase dryness and cause redness or irritation. Therefore, Johnson suggests steering clear of facials or harsh chemical treatments and sticking with a mild exfoliating cleaner in the morning. With these and other invaluable skin care tips from Julie Johnson and the experts at Northwest Georgia Dermatology, your skin will remain happy and healthy well beyond your walk down the aisle. VVV

So, he has proposed and you have accepted. Excitedly, you have already called every friend

and family member you can think of to bless them with the good news; you’ve spent hours staring at your beautiful new ring; and, most importantly, you’ve gone about setting the date. But now that you’ve snatched up every wedding magazine available at Barnes & Noble and the giddies are beginning to subside, the reality of the task you have taken on has begun to sink in… Okay, now what?! Well, it’s no secret that planning a wedding in today’s world can be super stressful, especially as a working brideto-be who pulls 40-plus hours per week at the old job. The dress, the florist, the catering, the right entertainment, the perfect venue—managing all of these important considerations will prove a bit overwhelming. If you’re feeling the heat, maybe it’s time to hire a helping hand to assure that you are on the right track. And for this, professional bridal consultant and owner of The Season Special Event Planning, Holly Lynch, may very

well be the best hire in town. “Sometimes you just need a little hand-holding to get everything accomplished so that everything runs smoothly on the big day and you can just enjoy yourself,” says Lynch. “It’s the little things that can keep a bride up at night, like ‘Who’s going to fix my train before I walk down the aisle?’ or ‘Who am I going to get to send invitations out since I have to work?’ Well, that’s where I come in.” Lynch has dedicated the last 12 years to gaining expertise in her field, and before upstarting The Season in 2007, this active Association of Bridal Consultants member and 17year resident of Rome devoted more than a decade to her work as marketing director for two local companies. She now spends her days helping brides across Northwest Georgia

And no matter what level of assistance you may require, The Season’s no-nonsense owner will be there to help you vet several options and customized twists. So, whether it’s a complete planning package that details every facet from proper etiquette to weekend coordination and logistics—heck, even having the right ceremony director to show you who walks down the aisle and when—Lynch can ensure the highest level of quality for your buck. it just may be one of the most beautiful destinations in the state—better yet,

the most unforgettable.

Whatever the case, Rising Fawn, Ga.’s Canyon Ridge Club and Resort is certainly the best kept secret in regional wedding locales. Established in 2005, it sits pristinely at the peak of Lookout Mountain, and offers each lucky visitor the ideal playground for relaxing the mind, body and spirit. “Photographs don’t even do this view justice,” says Canyon Ridge’s Derek Rogers. “Every

bride who comes up here automatically knows that it’s the spot where they have to get married. It’s just that beautiful.” While cozily accommodating up to 150 of your closest friends and family, the resort’s outdoor Pointe Pavilion is particularly stunning, with a panoramic view that retreats for 50-plus miles. The open-air venue found here also welcomes a cool mountain breeze from the Chattanooga Valley year-round, even in the swelter of summer, and provides

for your attendees to keep the elements at bay. And as for your wedding photos, well, doesn’t the one of the happy couple shown here say it all? A fully-outfitted bar and grill allows for a host of catering options, as well, whether you decide to take the do-it-yourself route or hire professional help. And during the cooler months, an elegant stone fireplace—one of the largest in Georgia, mind you—is sure to create the perfect ambiance. In addition to being an allaround great site for exchanging vows, Canyon Ridge is also the prime spot for an overnight stay following your reception. As a matter of fact, if you choose to rent out the Pointe, the resort will include the use of a 1M cottage bungalow located directly beside the pavilion, complete with the same jawdropping views. “You can use it the night before, as many brides

and their bridesmaids do, and as a place to get dressed and ready for [the ceremony],” says Rogers. “Or it would make the perfect spot to start your honeymoon.” If you do, in fact, decide to stay the evening, there will be plenty to do the following morning—a round of golf with your buds, fishing in one of the property’s well-stocked lakes, hiking or biking down to Inspiration Pointe. Even as we speak, Canyon Ridge is expanding its list of attractions to include a shopping complex, equestrian center and full spa. And though it’s simply gorgeous any time of year, the rolling peaks and valleys atop which it sits are particularly beautiful in the spring and fall. Just take the short drive up to Rising Fawn and you’re sure to agree, but be prepared to fall head over heels in love all over again. VVV

Your

it almost goes without saying that, for some years to come, the photos from your wedding day wil be the single most important collection of keepsakes to help bring it back into focus.

So, in an effort to distinguish your special day from fellow brides, why not pull away from traditional staged shots and go with something just as elegant, only more original and modern? Via his Rome-based studio, Kelly Moore Photography, photographic wünderkind Kelly

Moore brings this innovative new style to the wedding palette of Northwest Georgia. A Floyd County native and Darlington alumnus, Moore also graduated from the Portfolio Center of Atlanta with a degree in commercial photography. Since that time, he has garnered critical acclaim in producing

images for high-profile New York clients such as Money Magazine, Runners World, MasterCard, Lane Bryant and the World Trade Center properties. These days, Moore has chosen to narrow his focus to on-site portraits and a fresh new perspective on weddings. “A lot of the work I do is [meant for clients to] fully capture that special day,” says Moore. “My photos aren’t like some of the other wedding photos you’ll encounter. You’ll look back at these photos and get a true picture of what happened on that day.” Over the last year, Moore has achieved great success with his downtown studio operation located at 100-110 West Second

Avenue (below Hawthorn Suites). However, according to this young but seasoned upand-comer, his passion remains working outdoors. Of particular note are Moore’s use of a fisheye lens and his raw, often uncut style. “Photography is something that has always kind of come naturally to me,” he says, adding that all of his original prints are perfected in-studio. Moore also ensures that his photo packages are, with regard to style, unique to each wedding. That way, he says, his clients know they are getting the highest quality shots for the best possible price. His selection method is also rather cutting edge for Northwest Georgia, as each photo is available for viewing by way of his Website. This, he says, is so that brides, grooms and relatives alike can selectively order their own prints. Plainly put, Moore’s work is truly a glimpse into the future of wedding photography that every bride should see for herself. VVV

“once you rent it, the space is yours to do whatever you want... not a lot of places in town give you that much freedom.”

whether you are a bachelor or bachelorette,

it is supposed to represent the last night of single “freedom” you will experience before tying the knot. For the groom, it is a final chance to get together with your closest male friends and act like adult-sized teenagers. For the ladies, it may be gossip time with gal pals or simply a moment to relax a couple of days before the big show. And so, it’s completely understandable if either half of to be wants to head out for a night on the town, right? Enter 327 Broad Street’s Old Havana Cigar Company: the perfect venue for your engagement or bachelor party needs. Located upstairs from 20

in downtown Rome amongst family and friends. “It’s a multifunctional space,” says Old Havana president and proprietor Steven McDowell. “Once you rent it, the space is yours to do whatever you want.... Not a lot of places in town give you that much freedom.” For the last four years, the large upstairs space (originally a vacant storehouse) has featured room aplenty for parties hosting up to 75 guests. And complete with a regulationsized pool table, large screen

TV, dart board and so forth, this comfortably secluded portion of the building is welltailored for the perfect mesh of relaxation and social revelry. To boot, McDowell and company offer a full wine and beer bar (as well as a selection of nonalcoholic beverages), and two taps specifically designated for your own favorite choices of brew. There are coolers for your bottled faves, too, be it an aged Merlot and Newcastle combo or Pinot-PBR pairing. “In renting the room, you basically have complete control,” McDowell explains, “and we do cater to any requests that are made. Basically, if we can get our hands on it, we’ll be able to stock it.” And with the same exposed, red-brick interior walls, wooden rafters and original hardwood floors that give many Broad Street properties their distinct historical charm, Havana’s private party room also makes for a great place to feature either live music or a hired DJ. “With the way the room is set up, you wouldn’t believe how good the

acoustics are in here,” McDowell says. “The sound just bounces off the rich wood from the ceiling and it is truly wonderful. In fact, many groups have asked about recording in here just because of the sound.” In truth, the space is as beautiful in daylight as it is under the neon glow of night, and features great views of downtown Rome. It is available for rent Monday through Saturday, from 11 a.m. ’til 2 a.m. (sliced in six-hour blocks). The quoted fees includes a staff of friendly Old Havana servers, pre-party setup and post-party cleaning. The room can be deemed non-smoking or smoking by request, and is well-ventilated enough to accommodate either preference. The only stipulation is that guests must be 18 years of age or older. “We can stock any of your favorite cigars up here... on request for the same prices you would find in our shop,” McDowell adds. Catering and decoration are also permitted, and Old Havana will gladly provide utensils and place settings for those who opt to self-cater. “Whether you want a complete sit-down dining experience or more of an ‘open area’ atmosphere, we can design the area around you...so that the only thing you have to worry about is having fun before you walk down the aisle.” Heaven knows we can all drink to that. traditionally, the rehearsal dinner takes place after the intimate practice session on the eve of your wedding day and is hosted by the groom’s parents. But if you want to make sure to ward off any potential pre-wedding jitters or cold feet, why not dine in style? For this, Downtown Rome’s La Scala Ristorante Italiano promises the perfect evening, complete with the finest cuisine and customer service Northwest Georgia has to offer. Located on the 400 block of Broad Street, La Scala serves regional Italian and continental dishes, and in its critically acclaimed, 14-year history has come to be regarded as one of the most unique dining experiences in the region. On top of being voted Rome’s “Most Romantic Restaurant” by the Rome News-Tribune in

2008, it also received national recognition from Forbes Magazine for having one of the largest, most distinguished wine lists in the state. To boot, La Scala has been featured in Southern Living, the AtlantaJournal Constitution, V3 Magazine and other regional publications. Its authentic and diverse menu guarantees satisfaction for any and every guest, and includes a variety of seafood entrées, prime beef, veal, fresh salads, pasta dishes, and a host of appetizers and daily specials.

“Our food is always prepared with superior quality products,” says owner and proprietor Piero Barba. “Everything we serve is chosen for freshness.” Barba has dedicated more than a decade of his life to this extremely personal passion—i.e., a keen focus on quality and overall excellence—and every last item offered by way of his menu, even down to each bread and dessert, is made fresh daily, in-house. In addition to the seasonal Italian menu, Barba assures potential renters that executive chef Zane Nicholson will be more than happy to sit down and discuss a specialized menu for your special evening. And with room to accommodate up to 120 guests, parties of all sizes are guaranteed to receive the best of every service Barba and his team have to offer. Translated from Italian to English, the term “la scala” means “the stairs; or steps.” To visitors, this idea is visually translated by way of a large staircase found just inside the restaurant’s Broad Street entrance. Its title is also reflective of the original Barba family villa, built in 1807 on the island of Capri, which is found just off the Italian Peninsula in the Bay of Naples. Drawing inspiration from this storied family tradition and an extensive knowledge of the culinary arts, La Scala Ristorante Italiano welcomes all patrons to enjoy a rehearsal dinner experience like no other. So come, relax, enjoy a glass of wine, and toast to the ones you hold most dear. VVV vini vidi vici / v3 magazine

b e l l a l u n a rome’s bella luna offers a unique, one-stop shop for local brides with goodies galore for the special day.

from invitations and personalized napkins to bridal registry items and bridesmaids gifts, bella luna can make planning and gift-giving a piece of cake. Lee Ann Dempsey, owner of Bella Luna, revamped the gift shop to serve Rome’s brides when she purchased the business last spring. “I really felt we were missing a specialty gift and bridal niche shop,” she says. “People are tired of going to Atlanta for everything. Now brides can come to one place closeby, and they can feel comfortable here knowing that they are not just a number.” Basing her new business on the former service-oriented model of Wyatt’s, Dempsey believes personalized attention is the key to her success. For brides-to-be, she provides consultations for registries and invitation selection. Giftgivers enjoy full service, as well, including gift-wrap and delivery,

and can even call the store for assistance with gift purchasing. Dempsey will ensure that each bride receives her gifts either by store pick-up or delivery. As an added bonus, at the end of each bride’s registry period, Dempsey returns 10 percent of the grand total of gifts purchased from Bella Luna back to her in the form of a gift card. She says brides really enjoy this because it allows them to fill in the gaps of their registries, particularly with respect to place settings and silver. After consulting young couples on planning their registries, the Bella Luna staff frames each couple’s engagement picture to sit next to their place settings in the upstairs “bridal loft.” Dempsey

photos by kelly moore stocks a variety of lines for place settings to meet different tastes and price points. She recently introduced Vietri, a popular line of handcrafted Italian pottery typically used for casual dining. She also carries Skyros, a durable, high-quality line of casual dinnerware that can be used in the oven, microwave and dishwasher. For fine china, brides may choose from the traditional styles of Haviland, or perhaps something more unique and colorful from Richard Ginori, in addition to the more moderately priced selections from Lenox and Gorham. For invitations and stationary, brides may, again, choose from a wide selection of styles and price points. Those who are working on tighter budgets most often select from traditional offerings by National Engraving, or more contemporary ones from Checkerboard. The next

tier includes unique looks from William Arthur. Dempsey also stocks Crane, a company that offers the largest selection and variety of custom options; Vera Wang, whose pieces maintain the designer’s signature look with simple, yet elegant motifs; and Anna Griffin, whose floral designs convey an “old-timey Victorian” appeal. Most lines also have options for programs and other accessories, like customized napkins and fans. Continuing her emphasis on service, Dempsey says she will do her best to make sure each bride has the opportunity to acquire exactly what she is looking for. “If I do not have it, then I will try to find it or send them to others who might carry it,” she says. “My favorite part of this business is working with the brides. It is such an exciting time for them, and I really do enjoy being a part of it.” VVV

first impression your guests will have when the doors open, as you make your appearance and stroll down the aisle. Yes, “the dress” is, typically, the first thing people notice. It is truly the defining point in your wedding, and, in many respects, sets the tone for the entire day. Be that as it may, your thoughts will soon turn to finding the perfect gown, the one that will bring tears to your mother’s eyes. But more importantly, it’s the choice of your bridal gown boutique that will get you there. That way, they can ensure that you spend your hard-earned dollars on the bestmade dress for the best price. “A lot of women know what they like,” says Pam McAbee.

“But I always urge them to try on styles they wouldn’t normally try. I say, ‘Go ahead and try some different styles and colors. You never know, you might just find something you like better.” Top Hat also carries sizes 030, so there is a right dress for everyone, and if you can’t find your dress or color in stock, you can custom-order. In addition, with any dress purchase made at Top Hat, customers will receive a full fitting, complete with alterations and steaming. And, hey, don’t forget those bridesmaids. For the fellas, Rome’s top formal attire outfitter offers a complete line of quality, instore tuxedo rentals. “We have our own stock, which makes us completely unique [among formal attire shops throughout] the North Georgia area,” says Pam. “Most places have to go to Atlanta to get their tuxedos, but all the basics are here and in-stock, including colored cummerbunds, vests and ties.” Plainly put, Top Hat strives to bring Rome and Northwest Georgia the best in bridal wear. Because, as Mrs. McAbee says matter-of-factly, “After 30 years in the business, you kind of know a bit about it.” VVV

so, with that in mind, instead of directly purchasing those fancy tablecloths or that five-tiered chocolate fountain, perhaps you should try shaving down your costs with a few smart rental items. “It’s a great idea to rent,” says Action Rent All’s Patty Sheffield. everyone knows it’s not a party without the cake,

and that being the case, sweet sensations of rome certainly has you covered. factory under the title of Sweet In fact, many former clients contend that this small local bakery, located at 1850 Redmond Circle NW, Suite 500, has the moistest cakes in town. In 1966, long before future owner Phil Crane would strike out on his own, the building was home to the Donut Shack. There, Crane began learning his craft at the tender age of 16, and over the years, he would come to perfect his baking skills. Eight years ago, after meeting and marrying wife, Jan (who, believe it or not, was in the business of decorating cakes out of her home), the newlyweds decided to re-establish the former pastry

Sensations. Since then, it has been a highly successful town favorite, drawing customers daily with its delectable cookies, delicious cakes, and positively divine pastries. With regard to weddings, though, one of the things that makes Sweet Sensations so unique is their willingness to work on a one-by-one client basis, all in an effort to ensure that each cake is a unique and edible work of art all its own. “Butter cream works just as well as fondant, if you do it right,” says Jan. “I once made a pair of roller skates for a birthday... It really just depends

on your tastes.” Of course, it’s highly unlikely you’ll be requesting roller skates for your bridal cake, but how about this for an original idea?: a cupcake wedding. Sweet Sensations has many scrumptious ideas for this spin on tradition, which, Jan notes, is as easy as it is sweet. It also may help foster a more casual feel and is just the ticket for afternoon weddings. And lest you forget your beloved husband-to-be, the

groom’s cake is just as popular today as it was a decade or more ago—and, no, it doesn’t have to be a reflection of that wacky armadillo from Steel Magnolias. It should, however, reflect your man’s personality, whether it alludes to his favorite pastime or favorite sports team, so go for fun and creativity. Either way, Sweet Sensations will help create the perfect trout for your fisherman or shade of Bulldog red for your die-hard University of Georgia fan. VVV
