Jessica Schell is a 5th year architecture student at Jefferson University.

She is minoring in psychology for the purpose of designing spaces to allow the needs of the human person to influence architecture. Through thinking about architecture holistically, Jessica has understood how important it is to understand community and sustainability when designing. She enjoys taking care of dogs, spending time with her family and friends, singing, being outdoors (minus the bugs), painting, drawing, and traveling.

To investigate and understand Sharswood as a Living System in order to develop a community centered project, in a way that empowers community members to take action towards a more prosperous and holistic lifestyle for themselves and others so that Sharswood/Brewerytown has the ability to be a regenerative adapting and evolving neighborhood capable of enhancing future circumstances.

LIBRARY FORM

For the 2019 Stewardson Competition, a 10-day design charette, applicants were tasked with creating a library in Renovo, PA. Stream was the first of a system of libraries that would allow travelers to connect along their journey. The building layout is meant to be like a continuous stream, leading visitors through one subject and into another. As the Susquehanna river acts as a highway for travel, it transports people from Renovo to their next stop.

R O M E

In Spring of 2018, I studied abroad in Rome, Italy. In this section there are a few projects and sketches. Urban Fracture is a project I completed alongside my three partners Ben Manarski, Danielle Felicione and Samuel Horochowski. We studied the city of Rome as if it were cracking into pieces based off of a visual hierarchy that we observed in different maps throughout centuries. Patchwork is a continuation of that study, where Ben and I hypothesized to restitch a fracture along via Corso Vittorio Emmanuele.

Tasked with designing a cultural center in the historic district of Minneapolis, MN, Danielle Felicione and I, created Diaspora. Through investigating the refugee crisis in the United States, people were relocating in MN. We took the idea of people spreading throughout the world and applied it to our project. By preserving the base of the building MN could hold on to the existing, while welcoming new. Because Minnesota has very low temperatures in the winter, the skyway system that runs throughout the city of Minneapolis also connect to Diaspora, encouraging more diffusion.

This glass installation was featured for Design Philadelphia 2017. The Finishing Trades Institute helped us Jefferson University students to design and build these glass walls. After a competition, students were selected to help bring this project to life. Working on this project allowed me to experience the ever changing nature of a design project, to understand how to work with different people in different fields and how to communicate between those fields. The Jefferson student team consisted of Ryan Mann, Raymond Bracy, Morgan Young, Mike Jose, Rebecca Caddick and myself.
