Top Gap

On the surface Barnaby Dunn is a typical spag bol loving 18 year old boy, currently working in a grimy Tunbridge Wells hotel for “slave labour rates” to save up for his gap year travels to South America. He is completely typical all apart from the fact that roughly once a month he is whisked off on glamorous photo shoots where his head is attacked by camp hairdressers and he is fussed over by photographers. Blink. Look at him and you’ll see a young Leonardo Dicaprio, something which one can only assume will become exaggerated with maturity. Physically he is absolutely striking, with not a spot or a hint of pubescent awkwardness. In an industry where the likes of Jourdan, Daria and Lily rule over the catwalk, this perfect specimen is the next generations male supermodel, without the ego. When the young model removes his beanie hat and pulls up a chair at Gastronomia, a local Italian deli in his home town of Tunbridge Wells, it is impossible not to get lost in his piercing green eyes. Barnaby lights up a room as soon as he walks into it, unaware of the power of his 6 foot 3 stature commands. His beauty is entirely intimidating until he opens his mouth. His school boy charm and dedication to manners immediately makes you feel at ease. A self confessed, “Topshop man” his preppy style is impeccable and his never ending legs in spray on jeans look almost as good Naomi Campbell’s. Scouted when he was 16 through a family photo with his ex-girlfriend who was already with Select modelling agency, he was always destined for the bright lights of stardom. Whilst frolicking on the beach in Salcombe he landed his first job with the public school phenomenon Jack Wills, “though that isn’t something I brag about” he blushes. “One of the worst moments of my life was doing the Jack Wills Denim video with a girl who was 16 living in Hackney with her 25 year old or something boyfriend. We had nothing in common and had to act like we were a couple. So we ended up asking trivia like our favourite film whilst smiling lovingly at each other. Oh and her Dad had just gone to prison on the day of filming so she kept crying. So in short a nightmare.” It is fair to say he has rocketed up through the industry now posing for the likes of GQ, Dazed and

Confused and Topshop. Everyone wants a piece of this young star in the making, “I get scouted for Abercrombie every time I go up to London. It’s awful,” he says. I didn’t feel sorry for him. With all this attention you would assume an adolescent chap’s head to be swelling but this could not be far from the case with our dear Barnaby. It took him a good five minutes answering my proposition of “describe yourself in 3 words” and the nastiest thing he has ever done is dump one of his girlfriends at the beginning of a party. Barnaby has spent most of his childhood years walking the traditional grounds of Sevenoaks School complete with Just William style uniform. Now he stands a young man with a place confirmed at Oxford University to study French and Spanish in September. With Languages being one of his greatest passions, it is no wonder he has the travel bug; “I really get a buzz immersing myself in different cultures,” he tells me. His approach to modelling is extremely laid back, “It is not the career I have always hoped to go into. If it really took off that would be great and I would definitely consider it for a couple of years. But my degree and education are the most important. My Dad would be furious if I didn’t become a banker or something!” His Dad isn’t the only one who gives him abuse, “My mates give me a lot of stick. They always say, ‘Mate did you get the gig’ or something like that?” However there is one person in his life that supports his flourishing career, his girlfriend. Lizzie is his pretty blonde school sweetheart, “She’s amazing. I’m a bit of a long term relationship man. Being a player doesn’t really appeal to me. I like a bit of female attention but I don’t like getting with more than one girl a night. I just find that really bizarre and I’d feel really bad.” Barnaby Dunn describes himself as, “active, quirky and determined.” When he isn’t posing in front of cameras, dreaming of escaping dreary England or snogging his girlfriend he loves nothing more than hanging out with his friends at home in Kent. He likes Kanye West, playing tennis with his family, having long baths, playing the saxophone and sipping on mohitos. He is the face of the next decade.

Dress Kate Moss for Topshop

The Life Of... A Maribou Dress

She knew she had to have me as soon as she stumbled into Maribou(55 Pembridge Road.). Id seen her type before; a ridiculous backcombed barnet, way too much bronzer and a colourful array of jumble sale clothing hanging off her adolescent figure. The gasp of excitement as her discerning blue eyes darted around the shop was not unheard of either. Ginny (the shop owner) said her usual piece, “everything hand made… one off pieces blah blah…” A polite “wow cool” was all that could be said for there was no stopping her. She came straight for me, beaming so her train-tracks glimmered in the artificial lighting. The little madam snatched me off the rail ruthlessly, twizzled me round to inspect every inch of my uniqueness, ran her grubby fingers down me and then declared that she must try me on. Then we were alone. Ginny was still gassing on the other side of the curtain, “…we get eight year old girls coming in with their mummy’s…to glamorous Italian lawyers dressed head to toe in Prada and Gucci…” but my owner-to-be was not listening. Staring back at her in the mirror was the girl she had always sought to be, “This is definitely something Kate Moss would wear,” she told herself. The way my silk felt against her bare skin and how I accentuated her very unimpressive boobs made her feel sure that this was the dress to spend her hard earned wages from the cafe on. She felt exceptional. As she paid the sixty quid at the till she pictured me with her new Peekaboo stilettos, while I was man handled into a bloody plastic bag! We left the shop hand in hand with high hopes for our future together. However I could never have dreamt, whilst bored out of my wits in my Notting Hill home, where I would be in a few years time. Her confidence and desires to stand out from the crowd grew as fast as her breasts and I found my outings increasing. Then to my sheer delight I was unceremoniously stuffed at the last minute into her bulging backpack as she began on her plight to find her self in the land of noodles, lady boys and disgustingly cheap alcohol (Thailand if you hadn’t guessed). My debut outing didn’t come until a few weeks in, days and nights stuck with all her dirty pants was enough to drive any luxury garment like myself cuckoo. So obviously I was ecstatic to see the light of day, even better, the light of the magnificent Thai sunshine, on the idyllic island of Koh Tao. My owner, now an almost unrecognisable sun kissed beach goddess, flung me on over her crochet white bikini and without time to even say the word shemale I suddenly found myself riding on the back of a racy black moped. Fancy parties and fashionable bars yes I can do, but the back of a death trap…NO! As we flew through the uneven roads, people’s faces and lush greenery flashing past, I could feel her heart beating while she giggled with the blonde scallywag in front. “I look fucking cool” she thought and I could feel a change in her, she was truly happy for the first time I had been with her. The scrawny girl with braces had disappeared and blossomed into a self assured sexbomb. It all happened very quickly, one minute we were soaring on cloud nine and the next we found ourselves being thrown into the air as we swerved to avoid another lunatic on a moped. As we crashed to the unforgiving ground the pain was excruciating as I was ripped and destroyed. Luckily I was the worst off. This was my last adventure on the outside world. Now I hang on the wall as a decoration, not as a new and exciting dress but a sensitive memory. Though my exclusivity can never be denied, even now. Visit Maribou on 55 Pembridge Road, Notting Hill for your own life changing dress. Perfect for the ‘Gap Year’ clang! Written by Jessica Spurling

Thirty seven year old Richard Warlow, screenwriter, romantic and my uncle, is on his way to the top of his field. With intelligence and charm positively oozing out of him, it is no wonder he has got so far, though the same can not be said on the female front! Starting out his working life in the Christmas decoration department in Harrods, you can find him now based in London working on various series for the BBC including Waking the Dead and Mistresses: the popular series about the tangled love lives of four passionate women. With the destiny of his baby lying in the hands of Paramount the future is unknown but that is exactly how he likes it. On a sunny, Sunday afternoon I finally get hold of him on the phone. After a ten minute natter we can begin. AT THE MOMENT YOU ARE LIVING IN LONDON, BUT IF YOU COULD LIVE

When a man writes a woman

Richard Warlow

ANYWHERE WHERE WOULD IT BE? “In terms of my life right now it wouldn’t be anywhere but London, it’s my favourite city in the world.”

about that but I always just thought that was one of the things other people did. It was something that came about through opportunity really.”

WHAT WAS THE FIRST JOB YOU EVER HAD? “First job I ever had…um I think was working behind a bar in Tunbridge Wells! But my first job after Uni was working in the Christmas Decoration section in Harrods! I had to wear a waistcoat and tie with pictures of Santa all over them, it was awful!”

SO WOULD YOU SAY THAT YOUR CAREER IS ONE OF THE BIGGEST ACHIEVEMENTS IN YOUR LIFE?

(Both laugh. “I can only imagine!”) SO SINCE YOU WERE YOUNG DID YOU WANT TO WORK IN THE MEDIA INDUSTRY? “I suppose when I was young I wasn’t one of those people that thought a lot about what I was going to do when I was older. Um, so I think if someone told me when I was young that I was going to end up making a living writing for film and T.V. I’d be pretty pleased

“In terms of work yes, but I don’t think work is the most important thing in the world. But I’m very proud of what I’ve achieved.”

SO WHAT ARE YOU WORKING ON AT THE MOMENT?

“So the third series of Mistresses started shooting today and that’s been going on for the last year or so. Then I’m also doing Waking the Dead which starts shooting in July I think and it’s going to be the last series.”

SO NOW TO THE QUESTION THAT EVERYONE IS ASKING YOU. QUITE OBVIOUSLY YOU ARE A MAN, BUT HOW DO YOU WRITE SUCH CONVINCING PARTS FOR ROLES IN MISTRESSES?

(Laughs) “Well my thing about that is we are not really that different actually! So I’ve never consciously sat down and thought how does this woman think it’s more about how does this person think and behave. I think it’s less complicated than it might seem. You know you could say that because I grew up in a very female orientated household that might be part of it but if it is I’m not particularly conscious of it. But I’m a man who actually likes women rather than just chases them so perhaps that helps but I’ve never honestly thought I must imagine my way into a women’s mind I just think people are just basically fairly similar.” GOOD ANSWER! SO DO YOU FIND YOUR KNOWLEDGE OF WOMEN HELPS WITH YOUR LOVE LIFE?

(Laughs even louder than before) “Ask me again in six months! I think it’s helped me to have very good female friends but I’d say actually it might have been counterproductive in terms of my romantic life particularly when I was younger. I think there was a sense that, well it seemed to me in any case that the men that were more successful were kind of predatory. And I think all men sort of objectify women to some degree but for me it was always my instinct to be friendly and normal so I think that’s why I always had great female friends but perhaps didn’t have to success that other people had who were a bit more alpha about it. SO DO YOU HAVE A TYPE? God I thought this was about work! I don’t think I have a type. RIGHT BACK TO WORK! SO HOW IS YOUR FILM COMING ON? “That’s complicated at the moment. So paramount have paid for two scripts from me and they’ve also paid for the director Saul Dibb who did The Duchess, to do his draft of the as well of the script which is fine, I helped him with it. And that had now gone back to Paramount. It’s solved some problems and created others so the next step I think is going to be for me to go back and do what you call a polish of

his script. So the ideal is that will happen within the next few months, they will like it and then we’ll go and attach some cast.” WHAT’S THE MAIN PLOT AGAIN?

“It’s about a single mother in her 30s who was born and grew up in East Africa. After a nameless trauma that we don’t know what happened for a while to her young son who has become an elective mute as a result of it. She takes him back out to where she grew up in the hope that the change, landscape and animals, etc will have a restorative effect on him. There they meet this saturnine, dangerous man who runs the safari camp they are living on and the young boy comes out of his shell under the auspices of this man and she falls in love with him. And just when you think everything’s hunky dory we start to realise this man is unpredictable and really quite dangerous.” SOUNDS EXCITING, I’D LOVE TO SEE THAT. “So would I!” (Laughs)

he also runs a company in New York called Focus Features which is really big Film studio, and that’s the kind of work I’d like to be doing when I’m his age.” DO YOU HAVE A GENERAL MOTTO OR WAY OF LIFE YOU LIKE TO GO BY? (Laughs) I don’t really know…um… well I think at the moment I would say don’t strive to hard for happiness just concentrate on your work and the people in your life. And sort of just…look after yourself!” WHAT’S THE MOST EXPENSIVE THING YOU’VE EVER BOUGHT? “My car, and my flat obviously…but yeah my car!” WHAT ABOUT FOR SOMEONE ELSE? “I think it must be a ring I bought for Juliet (ex-girlfriend).”

SO , WHEN YOU’RE NOT WORKING WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO DO IN YOUR FREE TIME?

SO WHAT DOES THE FUTURE HOLD FOR YOU? “I’d like to be married and have children and possibly living somewhere in the countryside and continue working the way I am but who knows. One thing I’ve learnt is not to make to many plans.”

WHO WOULD YOU SAY HAS BEEN A BIG INSPIRATION IN YOUR LIFE?

Series Three of Mistresses will be coming to the BBC once again in October.

“See my friends, go to the cinema, enjoy just living in the city, go to galleries but generally just socialising…oh and play a bit of cricket.”

“Ah that’s a good question…I had a teacher in my sixth form at school called Anthony Seldon (now headmaster of Wellington College) who was the first teacher I ever met who really switched me on to the idea of what it was like to use your brain in a different way. That was definitely very inspiring. But he was a bit of a megla maniac, but you know, at that age he was very influential.” AND HAVE YOU MET AN INSPIRING CELEB? “Well in terms of people I really admire… um…well there’s a man called James Schamus, a very great screen writer and
