HELMER Interior Design
Portfolio selected works 2011 2013
Architecture and Design have always been my life passion. As a child, my primary fixation was buildings and sketching them has continually been one of my favourite pass times. Recently building physical models of my designs has become a new found passion. Pursuing post-secondary education in this field has introduced me to incredibly inspiring designers and architects, and their creative solutions to design problems have greatly influenced me. Sketching ideas helps me further explore concepts, and using current technology and strategies helps me create beautiful and sustainable designs. Experimentation with light is an important and inspiring aspect during my process of designing a space. I aim to think far out of the box and link new strategies to designs to create beauty and sustainability at it’s best. Most importantly, putting the client’s needs first is an essential part of my designs.

VIEWPOINT COTTAGE A C O T TA G E O N G E O R G I A N B AY 2013
Designed for an artist couple, this cottage reflects the natural formation of a Georgian Bay Island. The design is much like a “jump off of a cliff into the wide-open bay, or like the view standing on the edge of a pointed island. As a comparison to the connection between Georgian Bay and Lake Huron, the cottage design includes a large dining and living area where group gatherings can go uninterrupted. This design also includes a paint/ write studio and a guest Bunkie which reflects similar design ideals as the main Cottage.

Located on the second floor of the Woodbine Center, Atlas Shoe Store carries a variety of highend shoes created by worldwide designers. As such, it is an experiential journey to famous cities throughout the world--Paris, London, Tokyo, Rome, New York, Sydney, Beijing and Prague--- to name a few. The inspiration for “Atlas” is derived from the idea that shoes travel just as much as the traveler. The entire design is based on luxurious air travel in a gallery style layout. This diverse travel concept aims to bring pleasant travel memories to the shoppers. “At Atlas, our shoes will take you on a journey.”

T R I LUMINESCENT LIGHTING I N S TA L L AT I O N 2013
The Triluminescent pavilion is full of mystery. It’s triangular shaped structures act as the mysterious yet solid structured fill-to-the-void of its angular wood shell. In this site Triluminescent would react to it’s surroundings by providing the public with a glowing night light and a artistic structure where one can play or hang out during the day. James Turrell’s light prism is a key inspiration that uses a square oculus of light to create a solid-like prism. Hence, a void becoming a “solid”.

ELECTRIC CITY I D E O C O R P O R AT E OFFICES 2012
The proposed design of IDEO’s corporate office at 183 Bathurst St. expresses notions of an electric Toronto where hard lines defining new boundaries meet like lightning in the sky. A meeting place where power and solid surfaces meet and create a boom that raises the hair on your skin. This is how boardroom and meeting space designs should be. Lines jutting out from the core of the space to define workspaces where great ideas begin and explode like lightning and Toronto.

SYSTEMS LOFT TIP-TOP LOFTS R E N O VAT I O N 2012
The proposed design is of a stunning loft composed of a variety of systems furniture which provides the occupant with a versatile living space. Whether it’s a party for 2 or a fiesta of 8, this loft lodged in the old Tip Top Tailors Factory in the heart of Toronto is the right fit for the pharmaceutical “employee” that will reside here for a 3-4 months stay.

HUMBER MUSIC PAV I L I O N 2011
The intent of this project is to design a music pavilion in the Humber Arboretum. This pavilion would be used to host large outdoor events, such as concerts, school ceremonies and even weddings. The web structure of the pavilion provides a great shelter to house a stage and musical equipment for temporary installations. The project is an experimentation of shapes involving different types of materials and their function.

YOUR TRAIL OF ILLUMINATION ARTIST STUDIO FOR OLAFUR ELIASSON 2011
The intent of this project is to design a studio proposal for artist Olafur Eliasson. The goal is to explore the effects of lights, shadows and reflection during night and day. Suited for Eliasson and his various light installations, this studio is a perfect fit for the artist. The success of this design is made possible with extensive experimentation and research involving light and mirrors.
