Campfires by James Abbott ’14 Darkness howling all around, shrieks and cries fly from the forest’s folds, mixing, churning, stirring the air until their cold suffuses me. The frost settles on my bones and sinks still deeper, never wants to leave, just to grasp, to hold, to turn to stone. I am frozen, a statue, cannot run as the howls batter me while their icy grip holds me fast. Teeth grind and eyes roll, Fear tears into me, worms through my ears and twists my mind, bends my thoughts, paints the shadows, fills them with ghouls, specters whose cries assail, wreaking horror to crush the brave, born of Darkness, sired by Fear the cries so warp my haggard mind. But light cascades, flickers down, flows over my petrified limbs, and dispels the frost. Warmth caresses my face with loving hands, soft and supple. She whispers soft and soothing words The howls, now far away, are drowned Unheard behind Warmth’s quiet call. She takes my hand and draws me forth

Still the darkness all around harrows me at every step, ghosts and goblins leap and howl, contorted faces show their rage. Nothing they can do to harm, to call their savage master, Fear, Warmth protects me, pulls me on, into the light of her embrace a shelter from the wretched storm. But light cascades, flickers down, flows over my petrified limbs, and dispels the frost. Warmth caresses my face with loving hands, soft and supple. She whispers soft and soothing words The howls, now far away, are drowned Unheard behind Warmth’s quiet call. She takes my hand and draws me forth Still the darkness all around harrows me at every step, ghosts and goblins leap and howl, contorted faces show their rage. Clash of Clans by Erik Furton ’14 Getting ready for yet another raid Got to get some gold to get paid A hundred goblins ready to pillage And maybe get a star on this village The bombers explode as golden walls fall And the goblin rush creates quite the squall They spawn from four locations, their numbers never flag Too many of them so the game begins to lag Level eight mines succumb to their greed And they crush the gold storage with surprising speed Yet the goblins suffer casualties from the wizard tower’s mage While cannons and archer towers release their rage While the goblins crush the last elixir storage very fast They all bite the dust by a single mortar’s blast Twenty three trophies are lost in the reckless attack Yet eighty thousand gold and fifty thousand elixir are coming back To my own village, with a town hall at the center Where no opposing troops could ever enter My coffers, filled to the brim with shining gold From my level ten gold mines created in times old One builder labors for a level ten elixir collector, his job worth it While the other two use the gold to make the defenses perfect All admire the ivy draped town hall Surrounded by a line of crystalline wall When others see this village, praises they sing Of the glorious town of which I am the king.

We want your submissions! We strive to highlight the creative talents of Jesuit students, whether in the form of drawings, paintings, short stories, poems, essays, photography, recipes, or any other type of artistic expression. To do that, though, we need your submissions. We accept all school-appropriate creative works, regardless of topic, from all current Jesuit students. These do not have to be from a Jesuit art class, nor do they have to be new. Anything you have made or will make would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your consideration. We hope to see one of your creations published in a future edition.
