The Jesuit Journal would like to congratulate the winners of the second-ever iPad Art Competition: 1st Place Jeff Fulcher, 2nd Place Nathan DeMarco, and 3rd Place Tony Duong. We would also like to thank all the participants for their entries and hope to see even more submissions in next year’s contests. Please note that some of the entries were based on or largely influenced by existing pieces of art, but all submissions were still created by Jesuit students from scratch and by hand. In addition, thank you to Mr. Waits and his AP Spanish class for their poetry. These rhymed poems were originally written in Spanish, but the authors have also kindly translated them into English for the readers’ sake. Lastly, we dedicate this year’s final edition to graduating senior Kevin Chen, who has been a Journal editor for the past three years and whose work has kept the Journal alive and well. We wish him luck in his future endeavors at Rice University and beyond.

La Escuela by Robert Brandao ’14
School translated into English
I do like school, But I prefer a big party. The guys sleep in every class, Even though they don’t have a pass.
But there is hope for me; In Spanish, I understood everything! Mr. Waits teaches us very well; And for that, I tell God, “Amen!”
I always laugh every day, As if it were a fantasy. Those who attend Jesuit are family, And for me, it is home.

School translated into English
My first class is English. I have faith after. English is difficult to understand Because I don’t know how to read.
I thought I was good at math, But my grades are problematic. Physics is impossible as well; I can never solve the problems.
I realize when I am responding That I don’t know what I am doing. School knocks me on my rear; I’d rather just be a cashier.
Spanish is my favorite class, But I only understand a little. History is hard for me also; I can’t remember who killed whom.
