Congratulations to Spencer Vilicic ’17, Anthony Shirley ’15, and Daryl Johnson ’16 for winning our Spring 2014 iPad Art Competition! Each entrant drew on his iPad a scene, character, or object from his favorite movie. We hope to see even more entries when we run our next contest this fall. As another school year comes to a close, we would like to thank all the students who have submitted their art over the past few months, especially the graduating seniors.

Exotic

by Angelo Winings ’15 I always wonder how different life would be for me If I was born in a different country. How different could it really be? To be amongst the sea of poverty Or in the straits of Italy How different would I see, If I was deprived of my democracy, By the grips of a monarchy Would this really change me? to fight for liberty and the right to be free In the streets of my controlled city To lay sick in the cold dark streets Without a safe place to sleep For fear that my enemies may find me Where would I be? We cannot choose where or what situation we are born into But we can change the path we choose to follow.

What a Poem is for by Mark Hewitt ’16

A poem is the way, That you can express, The way you feel, Without any trouble, Or to show, The knowledge you have, That can make a change, But not with force, But with the simple force, To let it free, The power of freedom, To speak what you feel, And not let the anger, Damage your life, Let the world know, What you can do, Because that little difference, Can cause a big boom.

The Silent Times

by Mark Hewitt ’16 The silent times in life, Are like pieces of heaven, Floating down to earth, But silent, You can’t see it, You can’t hear it, Because it sounds like... Silence.

The Power of Silence by Mark Hewitt ’16

The power of silence can drive a person crazy, Can burst ones’ heart like dry ice under pressure, So powerful you can feel it in your chest, A thousand tears shed because you are insane, A world of loneliness, Like depression, Don’t know how to get to someone, How to not get mad or sad from one little mistake, To speak, but not hear anything when you talk, You see people talk, but hear nothing, And think you’re deaf, You get so frustrated you commit suicide, The last thing that goes through your mind, you think THE POWER...OF SILENCE!

The Power of Winning by Mark Hewitt ’16

The power of winning, Is like hitting a baseball, The kickback from the power, Making your body tense up, So hard to focus, On what is the goal, You zone out everything, All you can hear is your heart, Beating in your chest, Pounding in slow mo, You feel nothing but power, Flowing in your veins. Gas in your stomach, Ready to blow, Making you think nothing, Because you are frozen in time, Catching the moment, Like having a sugar rush, But a million billion times better, Trying to move, But can’t think what to do. Like dying, But coming back to life, The power that you would feel, But is impossible to do.

We want your submissions! We strive to highlight the creative talents of Jesuit students, whether in the form of drawings, paintings, short stories, poems, essays, photography, recipes, or any other type of artistic expression. To do that, though, we need your submissions. We accept all school-appropriate creative works, regardless of topic, from all current Jesuit students. These do not have to be from a Jesuit art class, nor do they have to be new. Anything you have made or will make would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your consideration. We hope to see one of your creations published in a future edition.

Please email all submissions to jcpjesuitjournal@gmail.com, preferably as JPGs, PNGs, or PDFs if they’re images. If you have any questions, contact Byron Song ’15, Pryor Miller ’16, John Wengierski ’16, or Dr. Degen.
