“[This] is a portrait made from drenching poster board in different layers of spray paint colors and letting the liquid build up and swirl around, then using foil to outline a simplistic face, sort of highlighting the emotional complexity that makes someone who they are.”

“This was an actual passion project of mine mainly because I don’t get to draw cars that often, but I’ve always had a real appreciation for them. The mustang actually means a lot to me, because as a kid the only thing I would ever talk to my dad about was cars, mainly because he loved cool muscle cars. Eventually I fell in love with them too. I just think cars have this stylistic beauty, because they have a combination of history and usefulness, so when I drew this, I tried to give it the look and muscle of a car, but also a drip of abstractness that defines it as unorthodox.”

Jack Mandell ’20 Honorable Mention

“This is probably the piece that I both love and hate at the same time. This is Will Florer (duh) in his role as Pony Boy when he was in The Outsiders. This probably took the most time [of all my submissions]: it clocked in at about an hour and a half of planning and about five hours of work.”

“I didn’t really think about these pieces; I kind of just let my pen move in whatever way I found interesting. The final shape of each developed very late - indecision was really the keyword for my process. I’ve always been interested in this sort of continuous, abstract art as a result of doodling during my classes - only recently did I ever really think of it as art.”

“The idea just came from [...] wanting to display a visible contrast between two things, displayed mainly by the brightness juxtaposed with the darkness, with me asleep in between the two. I guess it could be interpreted as a symbol of apathy within myself, for I could easily choose one side, brightness or darkness, but my indifferent self chooses to remain disinterested.”

“Global Positioning Song”

“TERMS AND CONDITIONS, DO YOU ACCEPT?” *BOOP, beat gets funky, several seconds of rest*

26

‘Sup, I’m Garmin Don’t be alarmin’ I got your back I can take the slack Driving to school? That’s uber cool! I’ll give your directions ‘Cause I’m perfection No time to waste Your car’ll make haste *funky beat* Turn right *beep beep* at the traffic light Wrong way! *honk honk* Make a U-Turn, no delay. Slow down, dog *bark bark* See the car smog? On the left, take the ramp Don’t get your car in a clamp Continue for 5 miles Don’t forget endless smiles *generic smile clink sound*

*slower, but still funky beat* Exit Highway at 5A No need to pay going my way. Turn right on Inwood your true neighborhood. In three hundred feet, Your trip is complete. Turn left once more, Get out the door. With this syncopation You’re at your destination.

Jordi Carbajal ’19 Emerging Artist

A groundbreaking new voice in the Jesuit artistic community, Carbajal defends an aesthetic of surprise. His first piece to be published in the Journal, “paper airplane,” is less about breaking the rules of sculpture than about folding them: Carbajal explores with disquieting simplicity the possibilities of the artistic gesture when it’s made rapidly, with minimal effort. The daydreaming student in the background is perhaps a comment on the plane’s message: How, indeed, can the artist or viewer be free?

Auburn haired girl I saw an auburn haired girl in my dream A dream that was dreamed seven years ago She awoke me from my slumber with her gleam And I was blinded by her glow Yet when my eyes opened once more She had disappeared from my sight The girl that I saw had become no more Today I cannot even recall her face Seven years have rid her from my brain Now remains only a small ember of her grace I realize that my quest to remember is in vain Yet I will not stop until I see her again I feel as if this search will drive me insane Yet I long to see her once again Nick Rowe ’20
