Economic Research Service, 15.8 million households in the US are "food insecure" at any given time. Although deciding to save that granola bar from earlier won't directly enact change, it promotes a sense of awareness of our privilege, along with cutting down our waste at Jesuit. What if, at Jesuit, we adopted a "food drive attitude" throughout the whole year?
APES Trash Audit Throwing away cans, paper, and uneaten food, is it really that big of a deal? When Mrs. Mahoney's sixth period AP Environmental Science class performed a school wide trash audit, this is exactly what they found. While throwing away that extra granola bar you didn't want at break may seem pretty inconsequential, the sixth period class found that a disproportionate amount of the waste we generate at Jesuit comes from uneaten food. This reality can be hard to face, especially as we participate in the annual Christmas Food Drive.
