ILLUMINATION AND INSPIRATION The end of a school year always brings important rites of passage. This year, within the course of three remarkable days, we experienced a richness that we can still “relish and savor” – as Fr. JK Adams, SJ, channeling St. Ignatius, exhorted us to do at the Baccalaureate Mass held on Saturday, June 2. Father JK is passing the torch after 12 years as Superior of our Jesuit Community to Fr. Pat Couture, SJ. We will miss Fr. JK, and will long savor his years of service to our community. On Sunday, June 3, we celebrated the amazing accomplishments of the Class of 2018. What a privilege to witness this close-knit class joyfully bring their four years at JHS to a close, as senior speakers Andy Johnson, Jack Clevenger, and Nicole Goffena traced the arc of their journey with artful aplomb and no small measure of hilarity. Our newest alums then headed off to the all-night Grad Party, while the rest of us prepared for Monday’s “Moving Up” ceremony, in which the Class of 2019 processed in to the Knight Center to take the place of the just-graduated seniors. We look forward to watching a new crew of leaders emerge from this terrific class.

As we celebrate 25 years of coeducation at Jesuit, we also bid farewell to three female members of the faculty who have been superb role models for all of our students, especially our young women: Gail Fleenor, Carol Young, and Carol Wyatt. Jesuit schools have emphasized the arts as key to an Ignatian liberal arts education for over 470 years. A quarter-century ago, Ms. Fleenor and Ms. Young helped honor this legacy by creating from humble raw materials our now-robust visual arts and vocal music programs.
Gail Fleenor is known as the no-nonsense ruler of “the Queendom,” her particular pedagogical patch in Art Room 2. Gail ran her program with the belief that “anyone can learn to draw (or paint!),” so long as the student has proper instruction from a teacher who offers high standards, a careful eye, and a listening ear. In addition to Gail’s attention to so many individual students over the years, she has also been a significant artistic force in the Jesuit community. In her early days at JHS, Gail lent her artistic skills to the Crusade for Coeducation, as well as provided visual themes for several auctions in the early 1990s. Along with her colleagues in the Fine Arts Department, Gail and her students have been key contributors to the decorations at our lovely Mass of Christmas Anticipation for many years. Gail also played a crucial role in the design of the Alex L. Parks Performing Arts Center. Former President William Hayes, SJ acknowledged that the beautiful PAC was built on the sturdy foundation of the artistic excellence of such stalwarts as Elaine Kloser, Jeff Hall, Al Kato, Gail herself, and of course, Carol Young. When Carol Young came to Jesuit in fall of 1993, she arrived alongside all those brave pioneering female students in the first year of coeducation. Within a few years, Carol had created a choir for freshmen, a Women’s Choir, the Concert Choir, and the Chamber Choir—and she learned to teach art in the Freshman Wheel from her new friend, Gail Fleenor! For 25 years, Carol inspired the soaring sounds of the Jesuit choirs and served as the quiet genius behind our nationally-known musical productions on the Moyer Stage. To the thousands of songsters that Carol taught, continued on page 2

continued from page 1 she has been “Mama Musica,” a sweet surrogate mom with just enough steel in her eyes to keep energetic freshman boys in line and in tune. To the faculty and staff, Carol has been a true and well-loved friend, who every year takes on the persona of “Christmas Carol,” as the choirs get our whole school in the Christmas spirit with a series of lovely concerts in the Moyer, around the halls of JHS, and at the Grotto.
Development and Instructional Technology, while earning a doctorate from UP in educational leadership. Carol befriended dozens of colleagues and hundreds of students. Every year, she led Encounters, kept our staff Social Committee humming, and introduced many innovations to our professional community. Carol accomplished all this while raising two wonderful children—Jessica ’13 and Paul ’15.
Carol possesses not only a lovely, lilting soprano of her own, but also a compassionate disposition that helps “to foster the harmonious development of our school community” in accordance with our mission.
Now Gail and Carol Young are retiring, and Carol Wyatt is moving with her husband to their ranch in eastern Oregon. We will miss all three of them deeply. Their honesty, integrity, and authentic care for our students are their greatest gifts to our community.
Then there is Dr. Carol Wyatt, the whip-smart, hilarious, deeply caring, consummate Ignatian educator, who for 16 years challenged her students and colleagues to live up to the Jesuit mottos of Age Quod Agis and cura personalis. From the beginning of her tenure at Jesuit, Carol made deep and positive impressions on all whom she met— especially her math students. In her time at Jesuit, Carol earned a second master’s degree in Statistics, so that she could bring to JHS our first-ever Stats classes and helped hundreds of students enter college with advanced math placement.
As we toast the many accomplishments of the Class of 2018, let us also recognize and honor those who taught them so well. The core of what makes Jesuit the school we all love is our faculty and staff. So, thank you, Father JK, Carol, Gail, and Carol. Well done indeed, you good and faithful servants.
Carol went on to become Chair of our Math Department, and then our first-ever Vice Principal for Professional

Drama Season Features Two High School Premieres By Jeff Hall
takes her destiny into her own hands. Jesuit High School has been invited by Music Theatre International to be one of the first high schools to pilot this colorful, offbeat, and heartwarming musical.
A Gentleman’s Guide To Love And Murder -
Book by Robert L. Freedman; Music by Steven Lutvak; Lyrics by Robert L. Freedman and Steven Lutvak. April 25-28
2018 Production of “Newsies”
The nationally recognized Jesuit High School Drama Program has lined up another exciting season of student productions, featuring two musicals and an ambitious and inspiring exploration into the hidden world of autism. This year’s series of shows celebrates characters who—for better or worse—bravely take charge of their own stories.
The Curious Incident Of The Dog In The NightTime - Based on the novel by Mark Haddon; Adapted by Simon Stephens. November 1-11
15-year-old Christopher has an extraordinary brain: He is exceptional at mathematics but ill-equipped to interpret everyday life. Christopher is determined to solve the mystery of who killed his neighbor’s dog, Wellington. Having never ventured beyond the end of his own street, his detective work takes him on a thrilling journey that upturns his world. Winner of the 2015 Tony Award for Best Play, The London Evening Standard called it “A beautiful, eloquent, dazzlingly inventive show about the wonders of life.”
This 2014 Best Musical Winner tells the uproarious story of Monty Navarro, an heir to a family fortune who sets out to jump the line of succession by—you guessed it—eliminating the eight pesky relatives who stand in his way. All the while, Monty has to juggle his mistress (she’s after more than just love), his fiancée (she’s his cousin but who’s keeping track?), and the constant threat of landing behind bars! Of course, it will all be worth it if he can slay his way to his inheritance… and be done in time for tea. Gentleman’s Guide is also being produced at the special invitation of Music Theatre International. Our season will also include such annual favorites as our Freshman Ensemble performance in January, our annual Playwriting Festival in May, and the return of last year’s unexpected adventure, The 24 Hour Plays. Season Subscriptions will go on sale in August, and include one seat to each of our three main stage productions (Curious Incident, Matilda, and Gentleman’s Guide), as well as early access to purchase seats for the Freshman Ensemble, Playwriting Festival, and The 24 Hour Plays. Subscribers are able to claim their seats to the main stage productions two weeks before they go on sale to the public, giving them access to the best available seats in the house. This is the one surefire way to avoid the Standby Line!
Roald Dahl’s Matilda The Musical - Music by Tim
In addition, we arrange special discounts and offers with our theatrical partners throughout the Portland area. Next year, this will include the Broadway tours of Waitress, Disney’s Aladdin, The King And I, and the incredibly moving Come From Away.
Winner of over 85 international awards, including 16 for Best Musical, Matilda tells the story of an extraordinary girl with a vivid imagination and a sharp mind whose talents are constantly belittled by her cruel parents and headmistress. Dreaming of a better life for herself, she dares to take a stand against these oppressive forces and
Plan now to join us for another exciting year of theatre, as we enter our third decade of student-created work in the Alex L. Parks Performing Arts Center. Visit www. jesuitportland.org/drama for complete and up-to-date information. We look forward to seeing you at the shows!

Goodbye to Fr. JK Adams, S.J. By Don Clarke
Jesuit High School has had the blessing for a total of 14 years (some in the 80s, some in the 90s, and in both decades of the 2000s) to be served by the ministry and presence of Fr. JK Adams, S.J. He will be remembered for his immediate response to care, his creative teaching, his battery powered dancing Santa (and his own Santa dance) in the week leading up to the December Food Drive, his presence on over 100 retreats, his Board of Trustees wisdom, and, most importantly, his presiding over hundreds of Masses where he brought the Body and Blood of Christ into our community. Later this summer, Fr. Adams will move to Gonzaga Preparatory School in Spokane, where he will be teaching and serving the community. Godspeed, Fr. JK. You will always have a home at J-High.

2018 Auction Chairs Randi and Pat Reiten and Molly and Matt Bordonaro
In May of 1968, an audience of dedicated parents, faithful alumni, and devoted friends came together to launch our very first Auction. In celebration of 50 years of generosity, Jesuit High School’s Auction Gala honored the tradition with a Fiesta del Sol on May 5, 2018, which included live music, flamenco dancers and colorful décor. With over 600 attendees, it was an energized celebration of the Jesuit mission.
A special thank you to our Presenting Sponsors: Clearview MRI, Gerding Edlen, and Touchmark and Colleen and Werner Nistler. Sincere appreciation to all of the sponsors, donors and countless volunteers who have made this thriving financial initiative possible. Because of you, the Auction remains Jesuit’s single largest fundraiser!
From 1968 to 2017, the Auction has raised $24.9 million for our school. Bound together in a great continuum of generosity, this year’s Auction exceeded expectations with over $1,026,000 being raised! Thank you! As part of the festivities, tribute was paid to special guest Vince Teresi who was integral in spearheading Jesuit’s

Counseling Office Updates
By Peter Johnson, Director of College Advising Final transcript submission
During the final weeks of the semester, students in the class of 2018 received an electronic questionnaire from Counseling Assistant Mrs. Young requesting confirmation of where their final transcript should be sent. Counseling Center personnel submitted final transcripts to designated colleges during the week of June 18. Please contact Mrs. Young at oyoung@jesuitportland.org with questions.
Counselor Statement Questionnaire for Class of 2019
A Counselor Statement Questionnaire has been added to the Family Connection website. It can be found by clicking on the “About Me” tab on the Family Connection homepage. For colleges that accept the Common Application, counselors complete a School Report that includes a brief counselor statement. This questionnaire will assist the counselor in highlighting the student’s presence and contributions to the Jesuit High School community. Students are encouraged to complete this questionnaire over the summer. If students need assistance accessing the Family Connection website, please have them contact Mr. Johnson at pjohnson@ jesuitportland.org.
Fall classroom visits to senior English classes
Seniors can anticipate Jesuit college advisors visiting English classes early in the fall semester. College advisors will present procedures regarding high school transcript requests and teacher recommendations. Students can anticipate
using their iPads to interact with their Common Application account and update their prospective colleges on Family Connection.
The Common Application for the Class of 2019
The 2018-19 Common Application will refresh and activate on August 1, 2018. Beginning August 1, students will be able to open a Common Application account and begin completing both general application and college specific questions. In the meantime, the Common Application has already announced the essay prompts for the 2018-19 application. Go to www.commonapp.org for more information.
Freshman Parent Workshop Series
During the 2018-19 academic year, the Counseling Department will be hosting a series of Freshman Parent Workshops. These are specifically designed to provide information and support to freshman parents as you and your student begin the high school journey. The first few will take place in September and hold discussion on the book, How to Raise an Adult: Break Free of the Over Parenting Trap and Prepare Your Kids for Success, by Julie Lythcott-Haims. Discussion promotes dialogue with other freshman parents on important topics raised in the book and the chance to meet your student’s counselor. Look for more information in late August. Happy summer reading!
Fr. Henry Schultheis, S.J. Award Recipient
SERVICE: STUDENT SPOTLIGHT Katie Amann ’18
Fr. Henry Schultheis, S.J. was the Provincial of the Society of Jesus at the time Jesuit High School was founded. The award is voted upon by a panel of faculty and students, who select the student who represents one of the most significant values Jesuit hopes to instill in its graduates: generous service to others—what we call being “a person for others.” This year’s Henry Schultheis award recipient is Katie Amann whose journey has been marked by both success in the classroom and willingness to serve in our community. She completed her required service on a Courts for Kids immersion trip to the Dominican Republic. She went to Washington, D.C. as part of the Ignatian Family Teach-In for Justice during her junior year as a participant and senior year as a student leader. There, she advocated for more just policies on issues such as immigration, the environment, and the criminal justice system. Katie has also been involved in service at Providence Child Center for Medically Fragile Children. She served as a member of student government and a student leader who helped facilitate the “Walk a Mile in My Shoes” refugee camp simulation. This year, she was part of the Senior Pilgrimage Team and was a small group leader on an Encounter. She is talented and driven, yet remains humble and composed. Her presence puts others around her at ease. She leads by example and does not search for the spotlight. She is willing to step up to challenges and always follows through. Katie will continue her studies this fall at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. We are so proud of Katie Amann for living out the Jesuit mission in such exemplary style. Congratulations, Katie!
