HAPPY HAPPY H H LLOWEEN LLOWEEN

This Halloween, 5 International Baccalaureate (IB) students have set out to bring the school magazine back to life for a Halloween Special. Up to work and responsibilities, they have wanted to create this new project for you, students of Salvador Rueda.

WHO ARE WWE? HO ARE WE?

Boo! Welcome to all! It gives us great joy to have the opportunity to write for all of you. We hope you like it as much as we do. Before we continue talking, we would like to make a small presentation about ourselves. We are 5 girlsIB students between 15 and 16 years old. In particular, we are from Health Sciences... Ironic, right? 5 future scientists or doctors writing the jschool magazine, Shouldn't we be opening hearts and using microscopes? That will come later, but what will come first is Halloween and we want to celebrate it with all of you! For this reason, we have decided to continue with the magazine, which gradually comes to its senses. This section of the high school is for us, the students. You have to take advantage of it! This is the place where we are all together expressing ourselves... It is our place and nobody is going to take that away from us if we maintain this custom and build a solid base on which we can support each other. With the excuse of the terrifying festivity, we wanted to take a step and break the ice. Join in this activity, make it ours. In addition, it will provide us with an improvement technique to learn to speak and contribute to a better education center.

WHAT WIS HAT IS HALLOWEEN?

HALLOWEEN, ALSO KNOWN AS ALL HALLOWS EVE, NIGHT OF THE DEAD OR ALLHALLOWEEN, IS A INTERNACIONAL CELEBRATION CELEBRATED ON OCTOBER 31

ALTHOUGH IT'S AN INTERNACIONAL PARTY THERE ARE COUNTRIES WHERE THIS TRADITION IS NOT AS IMPORTANT IN THE UNITED STATES, CANADA, IRELAND AND THE UNITED KINGDOM THAT NIGHT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT OF THE YEAR

THIS YEAR HAS UNDERGONE LONG CHANGES DERIVED FROM WESTERN TRADITIONS AND CULTURES THEY ARE MAKING THIS PARTY VERY SPECIAL AND FULL OF TRADITIONS THAT HAVE BEEN FORMED THROUGHOUT HISTORY, SO OF COURSE, HALLOWEEN 100 YEARS AGO IS NOT THE SAME AS TODAY.

HALLOWEEN IS NOT JUST ABOUT JOKES, CANDY AND COSTUMES, THE ANCIENT CELTS BELIEVED THAT ON THE NIGHT OF OCTOBER 31 THE SOULS OF THE DEAD RETURNED TO OUR WORLD WHERE DO YOU THINK COSTUMES AND CANDY COME FROM?

IN ORDER NOT TO BE ATTACKED BY SOULS, THE CELTS DISGUISED THEMSELVES IN TERRIFYING MASKS AND CLOTHING IN ADDITION, CANDY WAS OFFERED TO SOULS WITH THE OBJECTIVE OF ENTERTAINING AND PLEASING THEM SO THAT THEY DO NOT UNLEASH THEIR FURY WITH THE LIVING.

A SCARY ALEGEND SCARY LEGEND

TORY OF JACK O’LANTERN? IF YOU DON’T, D TAKE A SEAT I’M GOING TO TELL YOU AR LEGEND OF HALLOWEEN AND THE AT CAME UP AS A RESULT OF IT

ONCE UPON A TIME, A MAN WHO OWNED THE BLACKEST SOUL IN THE WHOLE WORLD CALLED STINGY JACK ON THE ALL SAINTS EVE, JACK WANTED TO CELEBRATE THE NIGHT DRINKING WITH THE SELF SAME DEVIL. AFTER MANY DRINKS, THE DEVIL ANNOUNCED TO JACK THAT BECAUSE OF HIS MEAN BEHAVIOUR AND BLACK SOUL, HE HAD TO TAKE HIM AWAY TO HELL.

JACK DIDN’T AGREE WITH THE DEVIL, SO HE THOUGHT UP A PLAN TO GET OUT OF THE PUNISHMENT ONCE OVER DRINKING, STINGY JACK DIDN’T WANT TO PAY THE BILL, SO HE CONVINCED THE DEVIL TO TURN INTO A COIN. LUCIFER DID SO, HE TURNED INTO A COIN WHICH JACK KEPT IN HIS POCKET ALONG WITH A SILVER CROSS THAT PREVENTED THE DEVIL FROM RECOVERING HIS ORIGINAL SHAPE.

AFTER USING THE COIN SEVERAL TIMES, JACK LET THE DEVIL GO WITH THE PROMISE THAT HE COULD TAKE AWAY HIS SOUL THE FOLLOWING YEAR. AFTER THE YEAR, LUCIFER CAME BACK THE STINGY DID NOT WANT TO BE CONVICTED IN HELL. THEREFORE, HE USED HIS INGENUITY AGAIN AND CAME UP WITH ANOTHER NEW PLAN THIS TIME, JACK ASKED LUCIFER IF HE COULD PICK AN APPLE THAT WAS AT THE TOP OF A TREE TO ENJOY HIS LAST MEAL BEFORE BEING TAKEN PRISONER IN HELL ONCE LUCIFER WAS AT THE TOP OF THE TREE, JACK CARVED A CROSS IN THE TRUNK SO THAT THE DEVIL COULD NOT ESCAPE ONCE LUCIFER WAS AT THE TOP OF THE TREE, JACK CARVED A CROSS IN THE TRUNK SO THAT THE DEVIL COULD NOT ESCAPE IN EXCHANGE FOR THE DEVIL’S FREEDOM, THE STINGY DEMANDED A DEAL: HIS SOUL WOULD NEVER BE CLAIMED LUCIFER ACCEPTED IT, AND AS HE PROMISED, HE DIDN’T TAKE THE SOUL OF THE LIAR WITH HIMSELF

HOWEVER, JACK DIED SOONER THAN EXPECTED. WHEN HE ARRIVED AT THE GATES OF HEAVEN, HE WAS FORBIDDEN TO ENTER DUE TO HIS MEAN BEHAVIOUR. FROM THERE, HE WAS SENT TO HELL, WHERE HE COULD NOT BE TOO AS A CONSEQUENCE OF THE PACT HE HAD SIGNED WITH LUCIFER. STILL UPSET WITH THE ROAMING, LUCIFER THREW TO JACK BURNING EMBERS, WHICH WERE CAUGHT THANKS TO A HOLLOW TURNIP USED AS A TORCH BY THE PREVIOUS HUMAN

FINALLY, JACK WAS CONVICTED UNTIL THE END OF TIME TO WANDER THE ROADS BETWEEN THE REALM OF GOOD AND EVIL SOLELY BY THE LIGHT OF THE FIERY EMBERS HE CARRIED WITH HIM AS A RESULT OF THIS LEGEND, THE MOST POPULAR TRADITION OF HALLOWEEN WAS CREATED: ILLUMINATE TURNIPS AND PUMPKINS AND PLACE THEM AT THE ENTRANCES AND LOBBIES OF HOUSES. IN THIS WAY, YOU MANAGED TO IMITATE THE COLOUR OF THE EMBERS OF HELL, THUS AVOIDING THE PRESENCE OF JACK O'LANTERN

AS TRADITION, ON HALLOWEEN NIGHT MANY BOYS AND GIRLS DRESSED UP GO FROM DOOR TO DOOR ALL OVER THE STREETS ASKING FOR “TRICK OR TREAT” TO RECEIVE SWEETS AND CHOCOLATES THIS TRADITION HAS BEEN FOMENTED BY FILMS, BOOKS, STORIES… BUT WHAT IS ACTUALLY ITS ORIGIN?

ABOUT THE ORIGIN OF THIS POPULAR TRADITION AND WHY IT CAME UP, THERE IS STILL DEBATE. ON ONE HAND, IT’S BELIEVED THAT THE ORIGIN DATES BACK TO THE MIDDLE AGES; QUITE THE OPPOSITE, THE ORIGIN COMES FROM CELTIC CULTURE TOO

AT THE TIME OF THE MIDDLE AGES, POOR PEOPLE WENT FROM HOUSE TO HOUSE ASKING FOR CHARITY IN EXCHANGE FOR PRAYING FOR THE SOULS OF THE DEAD RELATIVES OF THE OWNERS OVER THE CENTURIES, AT THE END OF THE XIX CENTURY, THE CUSTOM OF GOING TO HOUSES DRESSED UP BEGAN SINCE THEN, PRAYERS WERE REPLACED BY SONGS AND JOKES, AND FROM THERE AROSE THE CURRENT "TRICK OR TREAT" THAT WE ALL KNOW

THE OTHER BELIEF OF THE TRADITION RELATES THAT IN THE PAST, DURING HALLOWEEN NIGHT, ANY KIND OF BEINGS FROM ANY SPIRITUAL KINGDOM COULD WANDER AROUND EVERYWHERE

THERE WAS ONE WHO WAS ESPECIALLY MEAN, JACK O’LANTERNOUR NEW FRIEND FROM THE LAST PAGE HE WENT FROM DOOR TO DOOR SAYING “TRICK OR TREAT” ACCORDING TO TRADITION, IT DID NOT MATTER WHAT THE DEAL COST, IT WAS BETTER TO FULFILL IT IN ORDER NOT TO FALL FOR ITS TRICK JACK CURSED THE HOUSE AND ITS RESIDENTS, WHO SUFFERED ALL KINDS OF MISFORTUNES IF THEY DID NOT ACCEPT HIS DEAL THE EXPRESSION “TRICK OR TREAT” IS ACTUALLY A BAD TRANSLATION FROM ENGLISH “TRICK” MEANS A SCARE (SUSTO) OR JOKE (BROMA) INSTEAD OF “TRUCO” , WHEREAS “TREAT” MEANS A SWEET (DULCE) OR GIFT (REGALO) INSTEAD OF “TRATO”

HALLOWEEN HALLOWEEN AROUND THE AWORLD ROUND THE WORLD

HALLOWEEN IS NOT CELEBRATED EVERYWHERE IN THE SAME WAY, NOW LET'S TAKE A LOOK AT SOME EXAMPLES

HALLOWEEN IN HUSA ALLOWEEN IN USA

HALLOWEEN HAS ITS HIGHEST EXPONENT IN THE UNITED STATES, IT IS ONE OF THE MOST POPULAR AMERICAN TRADITIONS. AMERICANS CELEBRATE THIS DATE BY DRESSING THE STREETS IN ORANGE, DECORATING THEIR HOMES, DRESSING UP, COLLECTING SWEETS AND CHOCOLATES… THEY HAVE BEEN PLANNING THE PREPARATIONS SINCE MONTHS BEFORE: SWEETS, PUMPKINS, GHOSTS, WICHTES, HORROR HOUSES, COSTUME PARTIES, AND MANY MORE ALL OF THESE ARE THE MAIN CHARACTERS OF THE DARKEST NIGHT OF THE YEAR

THE ORIGIN OF THIS TERRIFYING CELEBRATION TAKES PLACE IN IRELAND NEVERTHELESS, HALLOWEEN WAS CELEBRATED FOR THE VERY FIRST TIME IN THE UNITED STATES IN 1840, WHEN THOUSANDS OF EUROPEAN IMMIGRANTS (MAINLY FROM IRELAND) EMIGRATED TO THE USA AS A CAUSE OF THE GREAT FAMINE ONCE THEY WERE THERE, THEY SPREAD THEIR TRADITIONS FOR THE WHOLE COUNTRY

DAY OF DDEATH AY OF DEATH

IT’S NOT EXACTLY HALLOWEEN AS IT’S QUITE DIFFERENT, BUT ON OCTOBER 31ST, A CELEBRATION VERY IMPORTANT FOR MEXICANS TAKES PLACE IN MEXICO, DAY OF THE DEATH WE ONLY TALK ABOUT MEXICO, BUT WHAT FEW KNOW IS THAT IT’S ALSO CELEBRATED IN BOLIVIA, PERU, ECUADOR, GUATEMALA AND IN OTHER COUNTRIES OF LATAM (LATIN AMERICA) ALTHOUGH TO A LESSER EXTENT

ON THESE DATES, THEY DECORATE THE CEMETERIES WITH CANDLES, GARLANDS, FLOWERS, ETC , SINCE THEIR BELIEFS DICTATE THAT ON THIS DAY THEY SHOULD HONOR THE DECEASED. THEIR HOUSES AND STREETS ARE ALSO DECORATED WITH THESE OBJECTS AND WITH PHOTOS OF THE DECEASED

THEY HAVE MANY TRADITIONS, SUCH AS TYPICAL FOODS THAT THEY SHARE WITH THE DEAD AND OFFER THEM, THERE ARE OFFERINGS AND ALTARS FOR THE DECEASED. A VERY FAMOUS FOOD FOR THESE DATES IS THE PAN DE MUERTO (BREAD OF THE DEAD)

SAMHAIN SAMHAIN

IN MADAGASCAR, THEY HAVE THE SAME BELIEF AS IN MEXICO THAT THE DEAD VISIT THEM, BUT WHAT THEY DO IS TO EXHUME THE BODIES OF THE DECEASED AND DRESS THEM UP TO BE WITH THEM REGARDLESS OF THE STATE OF THE CORPSE THIS CELEBRATION IS CALLED FAMADIHANA, IN WHICH DANCES AND FOOD ARE ALSO PERFORMED.

WHILE MEXICANS OPEN THE DOORS OF THEIR HOMES TO THE DEAD, IN IRELAND AND SCOTLAND, THE ORIGIN OF THEIR TRADITIONS WAS TO SCARE AWAY EVIL SPIRITS WITH LARGE BONFIRES AND DRESSING UP IN TERRIFYING COSTUMES TO GO UNNOTICED, CALLING THIS RITUAL SAMHAIN.

INFLUENCE OF IUSA NFLUENCE OF USA IN ICELEBRATIONS N CELEBRATIONS

IN THE PAST, THERE WAS A GREATER VARIETY OF CELEBRATIONS, BUT THE AMERICAN IDEAS OF HALLOWEEN HAVE BEEN SPREADING AROUND THE WORLD, EVEN IN MEXICO, IRELAND AND SCOTLAND THE AMERICAN TRADITIONS ARE GRADUALLY SPREADING

FAMADIHANA FAMADIHANA

AFTER AN OVERWHELMING START OF THE YEAR AND A STRESSFUL MONTH OF OCTOBER, ONE OF THE MOST EXPECTED PARTIES OF THE YEAR HAS ARRIVED WITH THIS LITTLE EXCUSE, WHY DON’T WE TAKE A BREAK AND DO A CREATIVE AND PRACTICAL ACTIVITY WITH OUR CLASSMATES? IN THE NEXT SECTION YOU’LL FIND A THRILLING AND KIND OF CREEPY CRAFT WHICH CAN BE MADE IN ORDER TO SPEND A GOOD TIME WITH YOUR FRIENDS AND TO SHOW YOUR ARTISTIC QUALITIES:

1º BLOW UP A BALLOON. MAKE SURE THERE IS NOT TOO MUCH AIR IN IT BUT ENOUGH TO GIVE IT SOME SHAPE

2º CUT SOME STRIPS OF THREAD, HEY SHOULD BE LONG ENOUGH TO GIVE THE BALLOON A SPIN THEN, PLACE THEM ALL AROUND THE BALLOON LEAVING SOME SPACE BETWEEN THE THREADS, THREE OR FOUR STRIPS WILL BE ENOUGH TO GET TO THE WISHED PUMPKIN SHAPE AFTERWARDS, SMASH IT WITH FINESSE UNTIL THE THREADS ARE UPTIGHT AT THIS POINT YOUR BALLOON SHOULD ALREADY SEEM LIKE A PUMPKIN

3º ONCE WE’VE GOT THE SHAPE, IT'S TIME TO CREATE WHAT IS CALLED AN “ART ATTACK CONCOCTION” . THIS ONE IS MADE UP OF: LIQUID GLUE AND PIECES OF NEWSPAPER AND IT WILL HELP US TO MAKE STRONGER AND TO DEFINE OUR PUMPKIN'S SHAPE

4º COVER YOUR CREATION WITH THE CONCOCTION AND LET IT DRY

5º WHEN THE PUMPKIN IS ALREADY DRY AND TOUGH YOU’LL HAVE ENDED THE BASE OF YOUR ARTWORK BUT DON’T FORGET ABOUT THE MOST IMPORTANT STEP, THE DECORATION. FOR THIS PHASE YOU’LL ONLY NEED SOME CREATIVITY AND THE MATERIALS THAT YOUR IDEAS DEMAND

ONCE OUR PUMPKIN IS FINISHED AND WELL MADE UP, IT’LL BE TIME TO NAME IT! WHICH IDEAS HANG AROUND THAT SPOOKY MIND?

CANDY APPLES

IT'S FROM THE U.S.A, ALSO KNOWN AS "MANZANA DE CARAMELO" IS A REALLY SIMPLE AND DELICIOUS RECIPE THAT YOU CAN RECREATE FOR THIS VERY SPECIAL DAY THIS ARE THE INGREDIENTS:

4 APPLES 300G OF SUGAR 50 ML OF WATER 100G OF BUTTER COLORANT ( OPTIONAL ) WHITE CHOCOLATE ( OPTIONAL )

IT'S AS EASY AS WASHING THE APPLES VERY WELL AND DRYING THEM VERY CAREFULLY BECAUSE WE DON'T WANT ANY RESIDUAL LIQUID TO REMAIN WE INSERT WOODEN OR METAL STICKS IN THE APPLES AND THEN, WE'LL SET THEM ASIDE BECAUSE IT'S TIME TO MAKE THE CARAMEL

FOR THE CARAMEL, PUT WATER IN A SAUCEPAN, ALONG WITH LEMON JUICE AND SUGAR, AND LET IT MELT OVER LOW HEAT WHEN IT'S WELL MELTED, ADD THE BUTTER AND WAIT FOR THE CARAMEL TO TAKE COLOUR (A SLIGHTLY BROWN COLOUR), STIRRING CONSTANTLY WITH A WOODEN SPOON SO THAT THE CARAMEL DOESN'T BURN WHEN IT'S ALMOST READY WE CAN OPTIONALLY ADD FOOD COLORING OF DIFFERENT COLOURS (LIKELY RED OR GREEN) AND WE'LL CONTINUE MIXING WE SET THE CARAMEL ASIDE AND WE TAKE THE APPLES AGAIN, THIS TIME, WE'LL DIP THEM IN THE CARAMEL. ONCE WE DIP THEM WE'LL LET THEM COLD DOWN, BUT WE CAN ALSO DIP THE APPLES IN REALLY COLD WATER SO THEY WILL COOL FASTER IF WE WANT THEM TO LOOK SPOOKY, WE CAN USE MELTED GREEN CHOCOLATE (IT'S WHITE CHOCOLATE WITH GREEN FOOD COLORING !) TO MAKE A SKULL IN THE APPLE TO IMITATE THE POISONED APPLE IN SNOWHITE.

PAN DE MUERTO

IT'S: FROM MEXICO, THIS TERRIFYING TYPICAL RECIPE FOR THE DÍA DE LOS MUERTOS IS ONE OF THE TRADITIONAL ELEMENTS THAT ARE PLACED ON THE ALTARS OF THE DEAD RELATIVES, TO HONOR AND REMEMBER LOVED ONES WHO HAVE PASSED AWAY. BUT DON'T LET THE NAME FOOL YOU! AMONG THE INGREDIENTS OF THIS BREAD THERE ARE NEITHER ASHES NOR PARTS OF DEAD PEOPLE, THE INGREDIENTS ARE MUCH SIMPLE AND LESS SCARY:

250 G OF FLOUR

60 G OF SUGAR

5 G OF SALT

5 G OF YEAST

50 G OF BUTTER

2 EGGS 25 ML OF MILK

1/2 ORANGE ZEST

1 LEMON ZEST

TO MAKE THIS BREAD YOU MUST PREHEAT THE OVEN TO 25 ° C.

PMIX THE FLOUR, THE YEAST, THE SUGAR, THE BUTTER, THE SALT AND THE EGGS UNTIL YOU GET A SOFT DOUGH THAT UNSTICKS FROM THE TABLE THEN ADD THE MILK AND CONTINUE KNEADING UNTIL FULLY INCORPORATED AND THE DOUGH IS MORE ELASTIC PLACE THE DOUGH IN A CONTAINER WITH A LITTLE FAT IN IT AND LET IT REST IN THE OVEN, UNTIL IT DOUBLES IN SIZE.

TO MAKE THE BONES, ADD MORE FLOUR TO THE DOUGH SO YOU HAVE A GRITTIER, COOKIE LIKE DOUGH. RAISE THE OVEN TEMPERATURE FROM 35 TO 45 °C MAKE THE BREADS AND PUT THEN IN A BOWL OR OTHER CONTAINER AND LET THEM REST AGAIN FOR 35 TO 45 MINUTES IN THE OVEN, UNTIL THEY DOUBLE IN SIZE. NOW, RAISE THE OVEN TEMPERATURE TO 170 ° C AND BAKE YOUR LOAVES FOR 25 TO 35 MINUTES, OR UNTIL THEY ARE COOKED THROUGH. REMOVE FROM THE OVEN AND LET IT COOL, COVER IT WITH MELTED BUTTER AND SPRINKLE IT WITH SUGAR AND YOUR INCREDIBLE PAN DE MUERTO WOULD BE READY!
