Monos de Madera or Alebrijes have been produced in Oaxaca for over 60 years. Alebrijes were originally produced out of papier-mâché in Mexico City. These fantastical wood creatures became popular once the Pan-American Highway opened up tourism to Oaxaca. Shops in Monte Alban and Oaxaca City were opened to take advantage of tourism. The new stores finally gave artisans an outlet for their crafts. Jesús Manuel Mena Garza www.jmmgarza.com
