Let’s go to work The Matahati collective met at itm (Institut Teknologi mara) in the late 80s. With the recent release of an eponymous book retrospective and a corresponding exhibition which spanned across the city’s art spaces, the ‘eye of the soul’ is about to come of age. Anyhow, it’s a long way from the days when Bayu and Hamir worked on stage sets, Shukri taught, and Masnoor made wedding videos – now, the story of the Malaysian art scene is a story of the Matahati also.

Hamir Soib @ Mohamed is a father of two, and used to bike them to school. There he would see other parents running through red lights. Says Hamir, “Let’s say the children see this every day for 6 years. It’s very small and silly, but that’s the cause of the Mat Rempit [issue]…I’m also in a hurry but you got to get up early then.” Hamir believes in educating through his art and is toying with sugarcane husks in his next creation of something out of nothing much.

Masnoor Ramli Mahmud comes across as the most soulful of the group. He’s met with friends from all occupations to talk about understanding the inner self – and through his work, he aims not to give answers, but to create discussion. He describes one of his paintings, of a heart and a hook, thus: “It’s true what people say about when you are really frustrated or in love, mandi tak basah, makan tak lalu…there is a feeling that really hurts you inside here.”

profiles on

Bayu Utomo Radjikin says the group are still to be considered babies until their 40th birthday fast approaching. He says his work is mostly about humanity, and “not more than that.” The period leading up to elections occupied Bayu’s mind. He elaborates, “Parties come and go, but the person will be there... I like the idea of the circus comes and goes but the clowns stay.” He also says, “Everyone can buy a pair of Armani jeans, everybody can buy an artwork.”

Ahmad Shukri Mohamed’s last solo showing, Warning Tapir Crossing, recorded the events of the Kuala Selangor forest reserve where he lives. There, many tapirs are killed by cars, and once a tapir was lost in his housing area. Says Shukri, “They should save animals first and then develop, or look for other places…you used to [see passing by] one piece of timber filling one trailer, then after a few years, it took maybe fifty pieces of timber to fill one trailer.”

Ahmad Fuad Osman’s brother used to draw Donald Duck and Pinocchio and put them on the wall. So out of envy he learned to draw, too. Much later, his aunt drove from Penang to Kedah, to hand him an application form for itm, without which the last-minute student with top exam marks would never have met the other Matahati. He will one day return to Baling to create a new perception of the figure of the artist, as someone who also is able to survive.
