Alternative Global Energies Replacing Russian Power Chris Goggin examines the landscape of global energy in the post invasion era of Ukraine by Russia. Specifically he gives focus to the rapid advancement of alternative fuels from which international governments will now be working hard to integrate into their own separate domestic energy mixes.
D
iversification of global energy options will be intensified as purchasing Russian oil and gas has been suspended from major economies across the globe. Efforts will have to be made by major European economies to introduce alternative energy options for use in domestic power. EU dependence on Russian oil and gas will be reduced by two thirds inside a year, meaning that European energy capacity will have to be filled by alternative sources. European decarbonisation has received extra incentive to maintain and rapidly advance plans to introduce a range of energy options to consumers. European and UK energy administrators are giving priority to introduce solar, wind, wave, nuclear, electrification, heat pumps and hydrogen into a future domestic energy mixes. UK and European leaders have already published strategies that outline a pathway towards reducing reliance on any Russian power source. Recent announcements in the UK include two potential new large solar panel sites that will provide power to nearby residents in Norfolk, eastern UK. French Energy Company EDF plan to install a 49.9 MW solar farm located between the villages of Mulbarton and Swainsthorpe, south of Norwich. If approved the solar farm could generate enough electricity to power 14,600 homes. Additional plans to construct a 130acre solar farm, the size of 65 football pitches are also under review. If approved, Pathfinder Clean Energy
(PACE) a UK based international clean energies company could power over 12,000 homes and reduce regional emissions by over 9,000 tonnes. The site will be also located in Norfolk Colton, west of Norwich. To create alternative UK domestic energy markets £375 million will be provided by the Government towards green hydrogen manufacturing as part of its Energy Security Strategy. The bulk of this investment will focus on supporting green hydrogen production and widening capacity. Work will also begin on legitimizing green hydrogen costs to consumers and producers alike. The European strategy – RepowerEU - will concentrate on strengthening a European energy system by pursuing two aims in the short and long term: the short term target will focus on regenerating gas capacity by diversifying gas supplies through alternative gas markets and to also purchase imported American LNG. Long term EU energy security will concentrate on increasing biomethane and hydrogen production and imports. By 2030 EU member states want to be free from energy security issues which result from potential Russian government manipulation that has proved a divisive political tool across eastern EU member states. Hungary retains a heavy reliance on Russian oil and gas and so appears to be pro-Moscow. Lithuania however is the first of the old Soviet countries to completely eradicate Russian gas from domestic power options. It has also been reported that Bulgaria and Poland have had gas supplies cut by Russia due to payments not being
made in roubles. Russian energy supplies influence regional politics. In preventing future energy security issues major European economies such as France, Italy, The Netherlands and Germany will soon begin constructing various renewable projects designed to introduce sustainable domestic energy supplies and to prevent future political leverage by Russia. Each aforementioned country has to suit its future energy needs on its current energy mix. Present French energy demands are met through a mixture of imported Russian gas and domestically generated nuclear powered electricity. To nullify Russian power imports France is going to construct 6 further nuclear facilities that yield low carbon electricity and extend renewable capacity for on and offshore wind power. France will construct 50 offshore wind sites by 2050. French renewable company Neoen has been awarded seven contracts that amount to 92.5 MWp of solar capacity. This capacity will be spread across 7 new sites that range from 4.7 MWp to 30 MWp. These 7 new sites will bring the active total of MWp capacity in Neoen solar panel projects in France to 661.4 MWp. The French government has also introduced legislation that ensures owners of domestic use PV panels and heat pumps will pay less on electrical charges. Domiciles that have installed PV panels with a capacity of 500kW will pay around 40% of the current grid rate, whilst owners of heat pumps will pay around 20%.
June 2022 The Netherlands also announced its intention to increase renewable capacity and green gas production in the coming years. Solar energy as well as offshore wind power are options the Dutch government is keen to explore. UK based oil and gas company Neptune Energy and German energy company RWE signed an agreement to work together in constructing a green hydrogen project using offshore wind to convert into green hydrogen. This project will be located in the Dutch sector of the North Sea. Once generated, hydrogen will then be transported to land through existing pipeline. Gas dependant Italy aims to replace former Russian gas imports with Egyptian gas whilst targeting future hydrogen usage. Italian gas operators Snam and Eni are both heavily involved in multiple hydrogen projects both independently and in collaboration with each other. Current hydrogen projects include the construction of a hydrogen valley. The Puglia Green Hydrogen Valley project plans to build three green hydrogen production plants in Brindisi, Taranto and Cerignola - all based around Foggia. All 3 hydrogen facilities will combine to generate capacity of 220 MW. PV panels will absorb sunlight which will then be converted into green hydrogen. Once all three plants become operational around 300 million cubic metres of renewable hydrogen could be annually cultivated. Germany is aiming to vastly increase renewable capacity. German plans focus on providing domestic electrical needs through renewable solar and wind power. Germany’s original plan was to make this possible by 2035; since the start of the Ukraine conflict, Germany has decided to bring these plans forward.
Germany is also investing in alternative gasses such as hydrogen. 8 billion euros has already been invested into 62 large scale hydrogen projects covering the entire value chain. Amongst these plans is the idea of laying 1,700 kilometres of new hydrogen pipeline.
Germany’s Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency (BSH) have begun the process of revising maritime spatial plans to include an additional 3 GW of offshore wind capacity in the North Sea. 3 GW of transferable wind power could potentially generate electricity to power around 3 million households.
It is evident that the majority of EU member states are opposed to Russian expansion at the expense of Ukraine independence. Russian oil and gas will no longer be imported. The resulting reaction has seen alternative methods of energy procurement, cultivation and distribution be rapidly advanced.
Wind, solar, nuclear, electrification, heat pumps and hydrogen gas will now be viewed as medium to short term energy security aims rather than long term decarbonisation goals. Oil and gas was already on a shortened shelf life, Russia may have shortened that shelf life in a way ecological campaigners have struggled to do so.

New RiserDeck Cast-in System – Safer Floors. Sooner Eliminates the risk that a riser void presents with Step on Safety’s exclusive NEW GRP system while saving you time and money.
The modular units are built to your specification in the Step on Safety workshop and delivered to site BEFORE the floors are poured. Simply tie them into place and pour the concrete. The Cast-In Service Riser Floor System – until now only available in steel – reduces the risk of falls from height because there is never a void. They are also up to 20% cheaper and 50% faster – installed months earlier in the construction process – than using the traditional post-fix system which is installed AFTER the building floors are poured. What’s more, they are supplied by SoS but installed by the concrete contractor as the building goes up which means one less team onsite and fewer delays.

Made entirely from GRP using Step on Safety’s exclusive profile with stainless steel fixings, the modular floors are light enough to be manhandled into position. The GRP Mesh Grating is easily cut on site as required for the services. Every unit is made with a Safe Working Load of 5kN/m2 – twice the industry standard.
The system comprises a specially engineered, exclusive GRP profile used to create a frame; this comes as a standard depth of 300mm but can be cut down to suit. Once a frame is made, 38mm yellow GRP Mini Mesh Grating is cut to fit and dropped onto the frame. They then add a temporary Corex cover to stop concrete or other debris falling through it. Once the floor is poured, the RiserDeck Cast-in units provide a non-slip, non-trip floor surface that can be traversed safely from day one. The hi-vis yellow finish alerts workers to the change in surface, ensuring vehicles don’t drive across it in error. If provided with a plan of the services going into the riser, extra joists can be added to each unit prior to delivery to ensure the strength is maintained once holes are cut. Alternatively, they can be installed at a later date.

National Accident Helpline supports safe work in honour of key awareness day To mark World Day for Safety and Health at Work (28 April), National Accident Helpline is showing its support to raise awareness of the injustices seen across many workplace industries.
World Day for Safety and Health at Work is a remarkable initiative, which promotes the prevention of occupational accidents and diseases globally. While there are strict rules and regulations in place to mitigate fatal injuries, in 2020-21 alone there were 142 workers killed across various industries such as agriculture, manufacturing and construction . What’s more, a staggering 441,000 people sustained a nonfatal workplace injury . In 2021 the personal injury experts uncovered worrying research surrounding the construction sector. It was revealed that workers fear the potential repercussions if they were to speak out and make a claim after suffering from an injury at work, through no fault of their own. Examples of feared consequences if they were to claim included job loss, a bad atmosphere at work or future employment concerns if news that they’d made a claim got around to other employers. To help tackle the issue and raise awareness, ‘Rights on Site’ was born - a campaign actively calling on

the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) to do more and challenge unfair treatment on site. Jonathan White, Legal and Compliance Director at National Accident Helpline, said: “Everyone has the right to feel safe at work, no matter what industry they work in. The fact is, if someone is afraid to speak out about an accident or make a claim, who’s to say the accident won’t happen again, but with worse consequences? “This is why it’s so crucial that these issues are addressed in the right way. If an accident happens, companies can put in appropriate measures and learn from it before it’s too late. He replaced two side shift hoses and cleaned up the spilled hydraulic oil. He said: “I left the job with happy customers, ready to start their days work.” Jason Bray said: “The Managing Director of a local company called me as the side shift hoses on their forklift truck had failed. I inspected the hoses and discovered the hoses had been incorrectly routed. I had a look at routing the hose assemblies differently and after turning valve adaptors 90 degrees, new hoses were now free from being caught. Sometimes the best solution is the simplest.”

Gilberts Protects Environmental Retrofit
O
ne of the latest buildings to benefit from the Renewable Energy Retrofit scheme is Scott House in Huntingdon, where an air heat source pump has been installed to service the three-storey Council office block.
In the drive towards reducing carbon emissions, Cambridgeshire County Council is leading by example. It is actively working towards becoming net zero, as a result of diverse measures including a £16m Environmental Fund to convert all Council buildings to fossil-free heating by 2025.
To ensure the pump works at optimum efficiency without disturbing the office occupants or passers-by, leading independent air movement specialist Gilberts has designed and supplied a protective acoustic screen around the installation on behalf of project contractor P Woods Construction. Measuring 8.5m x 5.7m x 3.5m, the screening effectively creates a box around the pump. The ALS30 single bank screen louvres provide fresh air to prevent over-heating, delivering 34% actual (50% visual) free ventilation area through the screen to the pump behind. The acoustic treatment modulates heat pump operational noise from up to 78dBA to a weighted SRI of 18 dBA (validated by performance tests at Salford University). A double door also constructed from the louvre screening facilitates maintenance works. Gilberts powder-coated every louvre section in traffic grey to further mitigate the screen’s environmental impact.

caling the Italian-Swiss border at almost 15,000 feet, the Matterhorn is both one of the most recognisable of the Alpine peaks and one of the most challenging. For mountaineers, the favoured access route is along the Hörnli Ridge, a few kilometres to the southwest of Zermatt in Switzerland. Which is why, near the foot of the ridge at just over 10,000 feet, the Hörnlihütte (Hörnli Lodge) was first built there as a base camp in 1880, followed by the Hotel Belvédère in 1909. The two were merged in
1987 and although the buildings have been subject to a number of changes since their original construction, by far the most ambitious and challenging project is the recent demolition of the Hörnli Lodge, replaced by a completely new state-of-the art structure, incorporating the Belvedere.
The High Alps is a harsh working environment Since the Hörnli Lodge is not connected to public utilities, natural resources like solar energy and the water supply are crucial. The
sloping roof is now equipped with solar panels and a natural meltwater pond nearby provides the water source, which is pumped to an underground storage tank before purification. On the ground floor of the lodge a 130-seat dining room provides a 180° panoramic view and untreated spruce wood dominates the interior, helping to provide a sense of warmth and well-being. The buildings with their latest energy-saving and environmental technologies may be a comfortable refuge for climbers and other guests, but
June 2022 it was not that comfortable for those involved in the design and construction of the project. The working environment in the High Alps is a harsh one. The ground is extremely steep, there are very narrow site conditions and keeping to a tight schedule for the outside work was crucial, given the limitations imposed by seasonal Alpine weather conditions. In addition, the only access to site is by means of a narrow, steep path and the construction teams and all materials – including the concrete for the base slab and walls for the basement – had to be flown in using helicopters. Two helicopters commuted constantly between the site and the concrete plant to fly in the required 17 cubic metres of concrete and pour it from the air. Each carrying around a cubic metre of concrete each flight.

he bank- one of the world’s largest co-operative banking operations- has a sustainability policy to achieve an A energy rating across its estate, and actively encourages its customers to adopt sustainable practices. Its relocation into three floors of a multi-storey office in Sir John Rogersons Quay, Dublin has seen that achieved for its Ireland division in part through the specification of Gilberts’ linear slot diffusers and swirl diffusers linked to a ducted fan coil system. The building has LEED Gold and BER A3 energy ratings. The problem with plastic:
Are plastic pipes damaging our bodies? Since the 1950s, when plastic started to be produced on an industrial scale, researchers estimate we have produced over 8.3 billion tonnes of the material globally. Shockingly, evidence shows that only 9% of this has been recycled.
T
he construction industry plays a huge role in this and is a major contributor to waste. According to the Department for Environment Food & Rural Affairs, UK construction, demolition, and excavation made up 62% of all waste generated in 2018 – that’s three times higher than industrial waste and five times higher than household waste. It was in the late 1970s that plastic started to become a popular material for plumbing systems, and it’s still widely used today due to its affordability. However, the effect this material has on the environment is devastating and new research suggests that it is not only the planet that it’s damaging, but also our bodies.
Microplastics found in human blood

While campaigners have been pressuring the government in the UK to introduce more regulations
on plastic manufacturing and usage, there has been a research project published in the Journal Environmental International by the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam in the Netherlands. The study consisted of testing 22 anonymous blood samples from healthy adults for microplastic particles. The study found that 17 out of the 22 human blood samples contained microplastic particles. The most prominent type of plastic, found in over half the samples, was PET plastic, which is commonly used in water bottles and food packaging. A third of the samples contained polystyrene, which is famously used for packaging products, and a quarter of the samples contained polyethylene, a plastic commonly associated with plastic carrier bags. Polyethylene plastic is also used in plumbing pipes, with polyethylene (PE) and cross-linked polyethylene (PEX) pipes commonly used. With a quarter of the blood samples
from the study containing plastic of this kind, it begs the question of whether the water we drink from these types of plastic pipes has a part to play. Are plastic pipes contributing to us having microplastics in our blood? The fact that plastics we use on an everyday basis have been
June 2022 kill waterborne bacteria such as legionella pneumophila, as it has the ability to withstand thermal shocking at 70 degrees Celsius. In fact, copper is an essential element for good health and, when it forms part of a healthy diet, the element supports healthy blood vessel formation, heart and cardiovascular function, brain development, bones, teeth, and collagen levels.
Choosing copper over plastic On top of its superior ability to supply safe drinking water, copper, unlike plastic, is 100% recyclable and can be infinitely recycled with no loss in quality. To date, at least 65% of all copper mined remains in circulation or available for use and around half of Europe’s copper demand is currently being met by recycled materials.
scientifically proven to enter our bloodstreams is a frightening prospect and this is the first indication in science of polymer plastic particles in human blood.
Is finding microplastics in human blood dangerous? The simple answer is that we do not know yet with this being a ‘breakthrough’ study. But academics such as Dr Fay Couceiro, an expert in environmental pollution at the University of Portsmouth, explains that, as blood travels throughout the body and around every organ, it is likely microplastics can be found in more than just the blood inside the human body. One theory states that microplastics could latch on to the outer membranes of red blood cells and could therefore limit cells’ ability to absorb and transport oxygen. This theory is supported by the effect plastic pollution has on our planet; bacteria in the ocean that produce 10% of the oxygen we breathe are susceptible to plastic pollution in the same way our red blood cells could be.
What we can do whilst the science continues to develop around this subject is to reduce our reliance on plastic products, reducing the ability for microplastics to be absorbed into our bloodstreams. Likewise, in the construction industry, we can look to reduce the use of plastics in our piping, opting for more sustainable materials such as copper in their place.

Every decision we make, not just about the materials we use in the construction industry, but across all aspects of our lives, will make a difference to the levels of microplastics in our ecosystems. Two unique housing schemes by a national housebuilder have been shortlisted as finalists at a major industry awards – and are hoping to go all the way. Vistry Group’s Oaklands Rise – which involves Queens Park Rangers FC as part of a joint venture – is a finalist in the ‘Best Use of Brownfield Land in Placemaking’ category of the Planning Awards 2022. The Willesden Junction location in Harlesden has been shortlisted alongside Vistry’s Horsforth Campus location, in Leeds, which is in the running for the ‘Award for Planning for Affordable Housing’ category.

Meanwhile, Vistry’s Horsforth Campus location is gas free and includes air source heat pumps that serve all homes. Solar panels are included on every house to generate electricity for the heat pumps. A 2.9 hectare ecological mitigation area is being built to the south of the development and trees are also being planted.

KAWNEER’S SOLUTIONS CREATE AN ENVIABLE NEIGHBOURHOOD IN THE HEART OF LONDON VISION One of the most significant challenges architects can face is regenerating an area full of personality, but in desperate need of renovation. The challenge can be even more demanding if the project involves changing the purpose of the site. But that’s precisely what the architects in charge of the Primrose Hill project in London, had to face. With a project value of approximately £16m this project required a highly sensitive design solution to address a complicated urban context involving 28 neighbouring residential and commercial properties. The transformation visioned by PKS Architects, and developed by main contractor Knight Harwood, involved converting some of the buildings into high-quality apartments and high-specification offices using Kawneer’s solutions. The task was immense and involved six neighbouring commercial properties. The goal was achieved using multiple highperformance Kawneer products. TRANSFORMATION Through site-specific technical visits and studies, Kawneer

specified and costed various façade packages and options. The lack of natural light was one of the many problems that needed to be rectified. It was solved using Kawneer’s AA®100 sloped rooflights. Additionally, GT70S windows were specified to replicate the building’s original steel windows to compliment the building aesthetics. For the entrance and balcony doors, the chosen product solution was Kawneer’s AA®720 doors with Glass Balustrading, thanks to the products superior aesthetics and thermal performance. For the curtain wall specification, the natural choice was AA®100 SSG, since it has smooth and seamless glass-to-glass joints without external capping. REALISATION The resulting specification helps to enhance the aesthetics of the building façade and increase the
energy performance of the building whilst meeting the cost requirements of the build with Kawneer’s market-leading product range. Shortlisted in the 2017 BREEAM Awards, this development sustainably refurbishes and reimagines a group of six buildings to create 3,500m2 of high specification office space and four new luxury flats. The impressive results haven’t gone unnoticed. The new factory in India, in Vadodara near the Gujarat port of Surat on the west coast of India, represents a £100m investment for JCB. Red diesel removal means price hikes – here is how telematics can help you offset the increase The tight margins the UK construction industry has been trying to navigate its way through with rising labour and material costs are set to tighten once again. With the change in red diesel legislation last month, we look at the financial impact businesses are facing due to higher costs and higher theft, and how the adoption of telematics technology can offer a solution. April 1st - this date had been looming over the UK construction sector like a dark cloud. It’s the day it became illegal to fill vehicle and machinery tanks in the UK with red diesel, leaving businesses faced with a fuel duty bill five times higher overnight.

This change in law follows the Finance Bill 2021, introduced to help meet the objectives surrounding climate change and quality of air. Low-tax red diesel makes up more than 15% of all diesel used in the UK, contributing to more than 13
million tonnes of CO2 each year. In 2018, construction in London alone was responsible for 7% of nitrogen oxide emissions. In short, the government hopes by restricting the use of red diesel, the construction sector will be pressured to source and invest in cleaner alternatives. Some firms have already announced they will be switching to alternatives such as hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) and Shell GTL - there are also talks of widespread introduction of Biomethane HGV refuelling stations. However, trade bodies are arguing that the removal of red diesel is going to have the opposite effect. A survey by the Civil Engineering Contractors Association in September 2021 warned of the colossal negative impact. Data
showed that tax changes would cost SMEs in the sector between £250,000 and £600,000 each year – with 50% of businesses voicing real concerns about their ability to continue trading while shouldering this new financial burden. Another consequence of increased volumes of white diesel on construction sites is fuel theft. So, what can businesses do to get control over tightening margins? Ultimately, it comes down to visibility and changes in behaviour – you need one to encourage the other. More than ever, construction businesses should be exploring the world of technology on offer. The right telematics system is going to give you increased visibility over fuel costs, operational processes and criminal activity.

172 Tonnes for Collett’s New Girder Bridge Collett’s new 250 Tonne capacity Goldhofer girder bridge takes on its first project as the Team transport a 172 Tonne super grid transformer to the National Grid’s Feckenham substation.
W
ith the National Grid’s Feckenham substation in Redditch currently being upgraded to replace ageing equipment, Collett were appointed to complete delivery of a 172 Tonne super grid transformer from Sundon. Showcasing the latest addition to their fleet, the Collett Team mobilized their new 250 Tonne capacity Goldhofer girder bridge to facilitate the movement of the super grid transformer to its new location 118 miles away. Housed at their Goole Heavy Lift depot, Collett mobilized the modular trailer, travelling as two separate 10-axle combinations. Arriving on site the two 10-axle sections allowed for the modular girder bridge to be built around the transformer to form a 20-axle loaded configuration. Undertaking jacking and skidding operations to manoeuvre the 172 Tonne cargo, Collett’s Heavy Lift

Team positioned and raised the transformer to allow for the construction of the girder bridge configuration. With the transformer raised to the optimum height Collett reversed each half of the girder bridge trailer positioning the side beams under the transformers transport arms and securing the load. With the transformer securely loaded to the girder bridge trailer the Collett Team departed the substation site. Travelling in a push/pull formation with one 8x4 tractor unit pulling the combination and one unit pushing, the convoy began its journey with police escorts in attendance from Bedfordshire, Warwickshire and Worcestershire constabularies. After careful route planning by the Collett Team, in liaison with both Central Bedfordshire and Worcestershire Councils, the 65.8 metre combination completed the 118-mile journey to Feckenham substation.
June 2022 Vehicles Once on site at Feckenham, the Collett Team hydraulically raised the side beams of the girder bridge, lifting the transformer and allowing for the positioning of timber supports. Once in place the girder bridge was then lowered, resting the super grid transformer on the timbers and allowing for the modular trailer to be split and disassembled from the payload. With the new Goldhofer girder bridge clear of the super grid transformer, Collett once again employed their hydraulic jacking and skidding system to provide final positioning of the transformer. To ensure maximum safety throughout, as with operations on site at Sundon, Collett had undertaken detailed pressure calculations, detailing the forces and ground pressured during the jacking and skating operations to and from the trailer. Once lowered to rest on the skid track, the hydraulic push pull units extended and retracted between the jacking points on the track to gradually bring the 172 Tonne cargo to its resting plinth. Over the course of the weekend, the Collett Team safely delivered and positioned this 172 Tonne super grid transformer, assisting with the upgrade of Feckenham substation. The completion of this project sees Collett’s new girder bridge become an integral addition to their fleet, joining Collett’s 350 and 550 Tonne capacity Scheuerle girder bridge and offering an added flexibility for heavy transport projects.
