Ravatherm XPS X ULTRA 300 SL is a thermal insulation product designed for inverted flat roofs, offering architects and specifiers the thinnest XPS insulation with a design lambda of 0.028 and declared lambda 0.027 W/mK for the whole thickness range from 70 to 205mm.

How to: Specify the right fencing post for your project The expected rise in commercial and residential building projects in the UK means the fencing market is expected to grow substantially over the next few years. Timber fencing is a popular choice for many types of property, from residential developments and schools, to public spaces and light commercial sites. With so many options available, selecting the most appropriate type of fence post to work with timber fencing can be difficult and time consuming. A good starting point is to understand the three main material choices most widely used; concrete, timber and metal. This article will guide you through the pros and cons of all three cases to help you specify the best option for your site. First, consider these four essential areas before making your selection: the aesthetics of the project; the practical issues; the short and long- term costs; and, of course, with the drive to become a more eco-conscious industry, the sustainability of the fence posts. Below is an outline of each post type, which should help you make the correct decision for your fencing projects:

Concrete fence posts These are incredibly strong and will last for decades. However, concrete posts are heavy to carry and install (roughly 40kg), and are not always the most aesthetically pleasing. They can also diminish the impact of timber fence panels when paired. It’s also much harder to attach fence panels to these types of posts which can create issues such as rattling in strong winds, running the risk of premature damage to the panel. It also means they can be easily lifted to gain access to a property.

The long haul Concrete posts also provide very little flexibility and moving them at a later date is challenging. The material can also become cracked; a small issue initially, but this can soon become problematic if water gets in and freezes during winter months; widening the cracks and exposing the steel core, which can rust if exposed to the elements.

Unsustainable Perhaps the biggest issues with concrete posts is that they are an extremely destructive material environmentally. Concrete is reported to be responsible for 4-8% of the world’s CO2 emissions, so choosing this option could damage your green credentials.

That said, the market is currently awash with inferior timber posts with nowhere near the life span of a premium version. For those looking for longevity and quality, specifying high-quality timber posts will not only guarantee a longer shelf life but they’ll also reduce the number of times replacements or complete reinstallations are needed, providing a low lifetime cost.

Aesthetically pleasing Timber fence posts are undoubtedly the most attractive option and blend well in most environments, and with timber fence panels. Moreover, unlike concrete posts, slotted timber fence posts and timber panels go hand in hand, making the installation process seamless. The panels can be securely fixed to posts with screws to stop them from being lifted, and reducing any chance of rattling from wind movement. You’ll also want to consider the height of the overall fence. If it is over 2000mm (roughly 6.5 foot) then heavy-duty timber posts are most effective, as well as in areas of high wind, or where the fence is steeply stepped.

There’s no planet B The sustainability of timber posts will be dependent on their lifespan. At Jacksons, our timber posts are kiln-dried and pressure treated; with a guarantee of 25 years, and a close to zero carbon footprint. Shorter guarantees will mean the timber is not adequately protected from rot and insect attack, and therefore the impact of disposing of timber and producing more can result in further, avoidable emissions for the environment.

Cost-wise, pressure treated timber fence posts are around £32.70 +VAT for 2.7m high, so are competitively priced when considering concrete options.

Metal fence posts There may be some who remain wary of using timber posts, as a result of using cheaper, inferior fencing options that have failed after only a few years of use. For those unsure of timber posts, there is the possibility to pair metal posts with timber fence panels for a robust compromise. With our new Mi-T metal posts, only a small strip of steel is visible from the back of the fence, and the T-shape provides a seamless finish from the front. Metal posts should be made from galvanised steel and if painted, should be powder-coated for durability and protection against rust and corrosion. On a practical level, our metal posts are great to work with. They have predrilled holes, can be securely attached to panel frames with screws, and they’re lightweight, making installation easy on site. Our metal posts have a 25 year guarantee, and they are also 100% recyclable. So, after serving their time supporting fence panels, they can be melted down and reused, in keeping with the circular economy aspirations of the construction industry. Although metal posts require a greater upfront cost than concrete and timber fence posts, the long-term costeffectiveness is well worth considering. As an illustration of cost, a Mi-T post including 12 screws is currently £47.24 +VAT.

Aluprof Commits to a Long-term Environmental Strategy with New Corporate Branding by Wojciech Brozyna - MD of Aluprof UK

It seems wherever we are today we are reminded that we are a generation that has to curb our carbon emissions in order to save the Planet for future generations. The fact that we have already increased the average temperature on Earth by approximately 1ºC above pre-industrial levels and that it is on course to increase more rapidly and reach a total of 1.5ºC to 2.0ºC by 20501. Buildings and construction account for more than 35% of global final energy use and nearly 40% of energyrelated CO2 emissions2. Clearly, with facts like these the Construction Industry is a prime target for carbon reduction, but the full picture is a little more complex. First, we often have the building deconstruction phase, using energy, whilst hopefully recycling as much material as possible. We then start the ‘build phase’ where all materials supplied to a project site carry some form of embodied carbon, followed by the construction phase which adds even more carbon into the materials used. Once in use, we have a building that may use further carbon fuels during its lifetime, unless it is designed to be carbon neutral in use. Whilst the build phase uses energy, which contributes to its carbon impact, this can pale into insignificance when we consider the building ‘use’ phase, as if the insulation is poor, vast amounts of energy can be wasted. It is therefore crucial to design with the very best, modern products, that help conserve energy. Clearly, buildings must be designed in future to last a very long time which further reduces the construction carbon impact, likewise, products that offer very high levels of insulation and sustainability, help keep the interior environment at a comfortable level and offer a lifetime of use.

The traditional approach for UK distribution of European systems would be to have product delivered to a central warehouse, then to be sent

out to customers on a ‘local’ delivery. Whilst this approach may be efficient for supplying small batches of materials too many customers, Aluprof systems are sent in bulk to UK & Ireland facade companies direct from Poland. Using modern 44 tonne gross weight delivery vehicles and trailer combinations, system and fabricated product can be shipped and delivered direct to customers, currently up to two times a week. This approach means that double handling is not required in fact offers quicker deliveries than utilising a central warehouse. Removing the central warehouse also saves further carbon costs in double handling, heating and equipment requirements. The delivery logistics are carefully monitored to ensure that routes are the most efficient and are undertaken at times to minimise traffic congestion further reducing vehicle emissions. Social responsibility is something Aluprof have taken very seriously for some time and with the continued low turnover of employees in Poland and the UK the company continues to review its support of its workforce. The change in emphasis is seen as a move away from the importance of product to that of the role in society that the company can play. In the event of a problem the FlushMaster features some simple solutions. There is an integral acoustic alarm with the option of voltfree contacts for coupling with a remote alarm or BMS to indicate that some maintenance is required. Then, to unclog the vortex impeller, simply insert a screw driver into the top of the motor/pump shaft (to do this it is not even necessary to remove the cover) and reverse its direction. The clogged item will probably drop free! For more stubborn blockages, simply remove two screws, twist and lift the complete motor/pump assembly away, leaving the tank connected to the toilet. Stella Rooflight helps turn old car showroom into new show home Stella Rooflight has supplied 12 bespoke conservation rooflights for a stunning conversion project in the seaside town of Lytham St Annes in Lancashire.

The project to convert a Late Edwardian purpose-built garage and car showroom into a stunning 21st Century modern home was the dream of architect and homeowner Sean Kember. The property was first designed and constructed in 1909 by local architect Thomas Hedges, for the Williams Brothers. The building remained a car showroom for over 100 years and to this day the building remains somewhat of an icon in the local area.

Stella Rooflight were commissioned to produce a total of 12 bespoke conservation rooflights to fit the new openings. 10 smaller rooflights, which comprised of 6 opening and 4 fixed frames, were designed to fit internal rafters of 690mm x 940mm and 550mm x 740mm. A much larger non opening rooflight which was sized at 3000mm wide x 3500mm high was designed as a grand centre piece in the roof. This rooflight was supplied in two sections which were purpose designed to sit one on top of the

other, with each section being divided into three panes. All 12 rooflights were manufactured using marine grade stainless steel and finished in a high quality C5 marine grade black powder coating. An important consideration given the building’s coastal location and the propensity to rust associated with mild carbon steel rooflights. The Stella rooflights also included a high specification glazing with BioClean Self-Clean, Solar Control outer pane with a warm edge spacer filled with Argon Gas. The internal glass panel used Planitherm Comfort Plus to provide the perfect balance of light, warmth and comfort. The rooflight was finished internally with a stunning American Ash interior liner. Due to the size of the larger rooflights, a specialist crane was required to lift the rooflights from the delivery vehicle, over the building and directly into place. The installation required careful

planning, which was overseen by local specialist roofing contractor Ben Valentine-Lynden from Blackpool Industrial Roofing.

Ben said: “Throughout the process we dealt directly with Paul at Stella. He was incredibly helpful throughout, advising us on the whole installation from the crane lift to weather proofing the roof lights. Paul was also happy to schedule the arrival of the rooflights to suit us and the weather, on arrival the units were packaged excellently and made for an easy transition from wagon to roof. “Overall I think these are a great product, easy enough to install and the finished look is fantastic. Would definitely recommend and would use again.”

Metalynx2 provides any scheme with complete flexibility so should a design need to be changed at time of fitting or in the future, the system can be modified quickly with minimum downtime. Lendlease signs off £1.9bn Birmingham scheme Birmingham City Council has finally signed off a joint venture contract with Lendlease to deliver the £1.9bn redevelopment of Birmingham Smithfield into a new urban quarter. The 17 ha new urban quarter at Smithfield will include a new home for Birmingham’s historic Bull Ring Markets, leisure and cultural facilities and more than 2,000 homes around a new public square. The redevelopment of the area, which is twice the size of Brindleyplace, is expected to take 15 years to complete. Work on a planning application for the scheme is underway, and a full public consultation will be held to work collaboratively with the local community as more detailed plans are developed. In January 2019, Birmingham City Council announced Lendlease as its preferred development partner for Smithfield Birmingham. SHEFFIELD’S BIGGEST SPECULATIVE OFFICE DEVELOPMENT UNDERWAY Scarborough Group International (SGI) has started works on site to deliver a new 62,862 sq ft state-of-the-art office building in Sheffield city centre. Currently the biggest speculative office development underway in the city centre, ‘Endeavour’ forms the fourth and final phase at the acclaimed Sheffield Digital Campus (Sheffield DC). Representatives from the project team, alongside Chief Executive of Sheffield City Council, Kate Josephs and Councillor, Paul Turpin, met on site to mark the official ground-breaking on Friday 11 June 2021. The design of Endeavour has been modified to respond to trends in respect of the future use of workspaces, accelerated by thee pandemic making the office environment a safer place to work including reduced touch points, but also appreciating the increasing prevalence of agilehybrid working styles many businesses are adopting. The development, which has a GDV of £27m, will create up to 140 construction jobs and, once

The Guggenheim Museum Bilbao is launching the crowdfunding initiative #BringPuppyToLife to raise funds to restore Puppy The Guggenheim Museum Bilbao has presented the crowdfunding initiative #BringPuppyToLife to raise the funds needed to restore the inside of Jeff Koons’s floral sculpture Puppy, one of the most iconic works of art in the Museum and the city of Bilbao The Museum decided to launch its first crowdfunding campaign after an exhaustive technical analysis carried out by the experts in the Museum’s Conservation Department. They concluded that the work has to be treated preventatively to replace and refurbish the components of its internal structure and ensure its future conservation. The restoration of the steel “skeleton,” the watering system, and the different layers that secure the substrate which also feeds the plants, such as the metallic mesh and the geotextile fabric, will cost €100,000. The Museum has chosen to enlist the collaboration of society to ensure that this beloved and representative work. Puppy, will remain in great condition for the next 25 years. As a result, the Museum has included a special microsite Bring Puppy To Life (on its main website) in Basque, Spanish, English, and French, for anyone who wants to make a contribution and become a ‘sponsor’ of the colossal floral Puppy. MPs form all-party mining and quarrying group Members of Parliament have formed a new All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Mining and Quarrying, supported by the Mineral Products Association (MPA). This new cross-party group will help to keep Members of the Commons and Lords up to date with issues affecting the industry which represents the biggest flow of materials in the economy. It will also allow the MPA to keep its members abreast of industry issues of interest to Parliamentarians. At the first virtual meeting of the newly-formed APPG, members elected Steve Double MP (St Austell and Newquay) as its chair, with other Members from different parties and from around the country elected as vicechairs including Jane Hunt MP (Loughborough), Robert Largan MP (High Peak), Kenny MacAskill MP (East Lothian), Jessica Morden MP (Newport) and Mark Pawsey MP (Rugby). After the election of officers, the group discussed the reforms proposed in the Government’s Planning White Paper ‘Planning

for the Future’ and its potential impact on the mineral planning system. MPs were told that the White Paper completely overlooked mineral planning, despite the fact that the Government’s ambitions for housing, green energy and infrastructure relied heavily on a steady and adequate supply of minerals and mineral products. New peatland construction methods could unlock further housing developments in rural Scotland More environmentally friendly methods for laying housing foundations on peatland could pave the way for increased economic development in parts of the Highlands and Islands, while mitigating disruption to the natural ecosystem and captured carbon dioxide. A research consortium involving Edinburgh Napier University and Heriot-Watt University, with support from the Highland Council, Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE), Construction Scotland Innovation Centre (CSIC) and JAHAMA Highland Estates is assessing the feasibility of a range of construction methods to minimise disturbance to peat and mitigate the environmental impacts. The Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA), NatureScot, ECOSystems Tech Ltd and the Scottish Government are also supporting the initiative. Peatland plays an important role in Scotland’s natural landscape and ecosystem, comprising of dead and decaying plant material with carbon captured in the remains. As much as 20% of Scottish land is covered in peat soil serving as a significant carbon store for more than 1.7 billion

tonnes of carbon - equivalent to 140 years’ worth of Scotland’s total annual greenhouse gas emissions. However, the soil is often unsuitable for building upon because of low strength, landslide risks and its tendency to deform under load. In parts of the Highlands and Islands, where peatland is commonly found, new housing is in short supply and some sites earmarked for housing development can be complicated by the presence of peat. Finding viable, sustainable methods for building on peatland that align with restoration work already underway, could transform Scotland’s approach to rural housing. Good quality, affordable homes could help to reverse population decline and promote economic growth in rural areas, encouraging a young and talented workforce to move to, and remain in, the Highlands and Islands.

Construction teams have previously relied on excavate-and-replace techniques, however, this project will explore a number of options that allow peat - and stored carbon - to be left in place, such as deep-soil-mixing, and piling. Timber piling would use tree trunks or long poles of timber to carry the foundations of a building. Disturbance of the peatland would be minimised, especially the presence groundwater, which is essential if peat is to continue to accumulate. The aim of the first phase of the project is to assess and compare the geotechnical suitability, environmental impact, logistics and cost implications of the different approaches. In a second phase, live field trials are planned to assess the suitability of proposed solutions. Councillor Trish Robertson, chair of the Council’s Economy and

Infrastructure Committee at Highland Council, said: “Highland Council is happy to support this research project as a way of exploring innovative ways of achieving our objectives of delivering more affordable housing and inclusive economic growth, while safeguarding better croft and other agricultural land, and reducing the carbon emissions presently caused by development on poorer agricultural land, which often contains significant peat deposits.”
