Could impactful wellbeing training help with construction’s labour challenge? NEBOSH’s Head of Corporate and Consumer Services, Ian Cooke, explores the link between how ‘outsiders’ see the construction industry, issues around safety and wellbeing and the current labour crisis…
D
espite current output growth of around 2.8% reported by the Construction Products Association (CPA), the UK construction industry has two significant underlying challenges right now - employee retention and recruitment. According to the Office for National Statistics (ONS), construction businesses are paying out record bonuses, up by 82% in the year, in an effort to retain skilled staff. The same report from the ONS also reveals that on average, 49,000 construction jobs remained unfilled between February and April of this year. Now much of this can be explained by the bigger picture, with record employment levels and greater choice in the labour market. However, it should also be noted that people now appear more willing to quit their jobs as part of what is being called ‘The Great Resignation’. Following the pandemic, people’s priorities around work seem to have shifted to a point where they want to be treated with greater respect, consideration and care at work and enjoy better work/life balance, flexibility and so on.
How people feel In terms of how people feel about working in construction, there is a clear difference between those who are already employed by the industry and those on the outside looking in.
A report earlier this year from the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) revealed that while ‘insiders’ see a lot of good in the construction industry, ‘outsiders’ are far less positive, particularly around perceptions of time away from the family, physical demands and issues relating to diversity, discrimination and a ‘macho culture’. Surprisingly, what the CITB report does not highlight is the construction industry’s record and reputation around the safety and wellbeing of employees. Construction is a highrisk industry, with 39 fatal injuries to workers recorded in 2020/21 and 61,000 non-fatal injuries in the UK alone. On average 74,000 workers suffer from work related ill health, according to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE). Dig a little deeper and further concerns are highlighted. For example, while in general men are three times more likely to take their own lives than women, men working in construction are three times more likely than other men to die from suicide, according to the ONS.
A survey published by Mates in Mind at the end of 2021 also showed that a third of self-employed construction workers were living with elevated levels of anxiety and that a stigma around mental health meant issues were almost never discussed with friends or family. According to the Chartered Institute of Building, stress and depression account for one fifth of all construction industry work-related illness. It appears likely that safety and wellbeing are significant factors around workers not only choosing to leave construction, but also the industry’s struggle to attract fresh new talent.
So what can be done? I spoke to Lucian D’Arco, a safety, health and wellbeing professional who has worked on a wide-range of projects with several large construction and civil engineering firms. He told me: “People experiencing mental health issues in
July 2022 construction workplaces can still be afraid to speak up and the reasons behind this need to be faced more, particularly around the insecurity people feel about their positions. “Workers need to feel assured that the support they’re offered is genuine. Measuring the performance of mental health campaigns and interventions is key to this, so that their impact is understood, and they don’t just form part of some tick-box exercise. When people believe their employers really do care for their wellbeing they talk more positively about the people they work for and industry they work in, and of course this leads to a better image.” He added: “We need to invest in people, not just in good salaries, but in training and support, including better working conditions, improved working hours, long-term job-security and transforming what can sometimes be a toxic working environment. We also need to shout more when positive initiatives really do make a difference.” A key aspect of tackling safety, health and wellbeing in any industry is effective training. At its most basic level, training ensures that the right processes and procedures are followed. However, the positive outcomes of training and learning can be much broader than this. According to LinkedIn for example, more than 90% of employees say they would stay with a company if it was willing to invest in their learning. LinkedIn also shows that one of the key attractive learning and development topics in organisations is employee wellbeing.
Missed opportunity? During my time working in construction, I have seen a shift in the attitude of workers to take more care of their physical health. When I first worked on construction sites, I rarely saw a clean sink or soap dispenser, now you tend to see hand washing stations, pre work barrier creams and post work moisturisers. I have also seen a positive shift in attitudes of the younger generations wanting to look after their health. I think we still have a way to go with mental health but as with the above example, construction companies will need to provide the facilities and help educate their workers particularly those who may not be as familiar with current approaches. I see these positive safety, mental health, and wellbeing programmes as a key strength of the construction industry moving forward. I’m sure that already, for many within the sector, they are having a positive impact on ‘insider’ perception.
Perhaps if the positive impact of these programmes was more widely appreciated, then those on the outside of the industry would also feel that construction may not be such a bad place to work after all?
To help employers reinforce safety, mental health, and wellbeing messaging and learning at work NEBOSH now endorses in-company learning. The key to our NEBOSH Endorsed service is to deliver and measure learning impact, that improves organisational performance and behaviour.

Updated Part F CPD from Titon Now Available Following the update to the Building Regulations 2010 (Part F1 Dwellings 2022), Titon has revised its popular ‘Part F 2010 Domestic Buildings Compliance’ CPD presentation to help gain a deeper understanding of the new requirements. With the updated edition of Part F released in December 2021 for implementation in June 2022, there have been many important changes which are clearly demonstrated within the updated CPD.
04
Titon’s aim is to provide an explanation of the requirements of the Part F 2022 update regarding ventilation, and the three systems examples that are used, and to emphasise the need to ensure that the installed performance meets the designer’s expectations in order to achieve full compliance.
which the Titon CPD guidance is aimed at achieving, if followed in full. By the end of the CPD, you will have clearer knowledge of Part F, PCDB and a look at good practice for installation and a check list of ventilation systems.

Unpicking plastic’s questionable sustainability credentials Seemingly a convenient solution to consumers, many simply do not question the fact its recyclability credentials are nothing more than theoretical, and further removed from a circular economy the manufacturers claim. Pipes made from commonly used plastic compounds such as polyvinylchloride (PVC), polyethylene (PE), or crosslinked polyethylene (PEX) all deteriorate over time, making them less and less suitable for recycling or re-manufacturing into other usable items. Despite being produced from many different types of polymers, they all face the same problem of not being recyclable due to the process being too energy and cost intensive.
Now more than ever we hear increasing numbers of firms making bold promises to promote sustainability in the built environment and its supporting manufacturing sector.
W
National Geographic reported that, of the more than 8.3 billion metric tonnes ever created, only 9% has likely ever been recycled.
But how can companies do better when the promises made around products’ sustainability are fundamentally flawed? Can plastics really be recycled or achieve a circular economy?
Not just consumer goods are landfilled or incinerated, but so too are most of the ‘hidden plastics’ found in our homes, transport, and places of work. What’s worse is that consumers get blamed, despite thinking they’re acting sustainably.
ith the construction sector responsible for half of the total global energy use, and half of all greenhouse gas emissions, it is critical everyone gets involved and strives to limit their impact.
The recycled lie
06
Something that has become increasingly evident in recent years is the fact that plastic recycling is a ‘greenwash’.
Plastic tube used for plumbing and underfloor heating is a great example. Marketed, sold, and installed as a sustainable and recyclable option, it is clearly another hidden plastic.
Many manufacturers pledge their commitments to developing a catalogue of 100% recyclable products where the raw materials can be used and re-used without the loss of quality or reliance on finite fossil fuels. However, this ambition remains firmly out of reach and is fast becoming an environmental crisis as producers continue creating new plastic, rather than reusing old. Although the intentions are good and come from a genuine desire of wanting to do better, the reality is that these promises often fall short of the bigger picture, leaving promises of change as nothing more than empty words. It’s time we put an end to the plastic greenwash and challenge the myth that plastic has a circular, end of life economy.
Re-inventing the wheel Instead of plastics producers looking at alternative materials for their products, many are in fact reinventing the wheel trying to recycle a largely unrecyclable product,
July 2022
while misleading consumers with constant greenwashing. Aiming to incorporate more recycled materials in new products is just not working. Recycled raw material of common polymers such as PVC, PE, and PEX are not readily available and remain more expensive and less durable than their brand-new, carbon intensive counterparts. The reality is that products still need to meet required quality standards and it’s incredibly difficult to incorporate once or several times used polymers in producing a product that meets these requirements. There’s no wonder we see a similar picture in consumer goods, where multinational giants have been continuously failing to meet their own targets for recycling and using recycled plastics since the 1990’s.
We need to limit plastic use, not hope for recycling to work. Research suggests that cutting plastic consumption by half, while making the remainder from nonfossil fuel compounds, will make it possible to cut global emissions from plastics from 1,984 Mt CO2e in 2015 to 790 Mt CO2e in 2050.
So, what are we waiting for? In construction we have a longstanding heritage of working with a whole host of natural materials which can easily rival plastic in performance, durability, and sustainability. Why chase a seemingly impossible goal of recycled, biodegradable plastic pipe strong enough to endure sun and rain, when we already have the resilience
of copper, a material which is infinitely recyclable and retains its properties from its first to every subsequent use? To create a future that isn’t reliant on finite resources, we need to look at materials which can offer far more for the environment and the people it serves, without limiting the progress of innovation. We also need to question green credentials of materials and consider the bigger impact on people and the world around us. Otherwise, a sustainable future will unfortunately remain a greenwash pipedream. To find out more about the benefits of copper, please visit www.cuspuk.com.
The greener way forward It is clear plastic serves a purpose in modern society, but not to the scale it’s currently used. Although polymer research and investment into functioning recycling practices are all well and good, they’re not tackling the bigger problem, our over-reliance on plastic, which is rapidly polluting the planet and damaging ecosystems.

New wastewater treatment CPD launched by Graf UK
CPD presentation by Graf UK delivers the ultimate in wastewater wisdom. and type of building, the CPD also explains processes including de-nitrification, disinfection, phosphate removal and carbon dosing. This latter process helps housing developments deal efficiently with sewage underload as their population increases.
A
CPD that explains the issues around wastewater treatment and advises on the options available for specifiers has been launched by Graf UK.
The 50-minute presentation delivers a multitude of “Wastewater wisdom”, ranging from the fundamentals (what is wastewater treatment and why is it required) to the latest regulations and issues, via a user-friendly mix of “live” presentation and videos. Graf UK’s new CPD explains the differences between cesspools, septic tanks and wastewater treatment plants, then goes on to detail, and demo, advanced wastewater systems for optimum treatment, such as SBR (Sequence Batch Reactor) systems which are capable of cleaning wastewater to 98% in just six hours. It also explains the pollution strength of sewage and how Graf systems are capable of reducing the average levels of BOD (Biochemical Oxygen Demand - the amount of oxygen that microorganisms/bacteria require to break down organic matter) from 300400mg/l to just seven, suspended solids from 200300mg/l to 14mg/l, and ammonia (nitrogen compound) from 60-80mg/l to 0.5mg/l. As well as providing guidance for calculating sewage treatment system sizes depending on the population
Graf UK’s new CPD features a video explaining the new General Binding Rules under which anyone with a septic tank discharging into a watercourse must have plans in place to replace it or upgrade the foul water solution within a reasonable timescale, typically 12 months, or sooner if the property is sold before this date. It also explains how the impact of nutrient neutrality is making its way north from the south-west of England, where Natural England is clamping down on developments in the Solent area until such time as they can prove they are nutrient neutral. Build-up of nitrates and phosphates produced from housing developments increases the production of algae and subsequently reduces oxygen levels in rivers and lakes. The CPD explains that while manufacturers can help specifiers design a solution to redress the balance of nature, only those with European expertise are best placed to do so as the UK does not have the historical data that mainland Europe does in this instance. Graf UK’s new CPD concludes with the case study of a family attraction in a SPA (Special Protection Area) in Scotland that required a new sewage treatment solution that SEPA (the Scottish Environment Protection Agency) required to deliver phosphate levels of 2mg/l, and 0.2mg/l. Slotting into BREEAM excellence 103 Colmore Row in the heart of Birmingham’s business district is the city’s tallest office building, and “one of the cleanest and greenest”, achieving BREEAM Excellent. Built by BAM Construct UK, the 21,000+m2 building uses 100% renewable energy for its electricity, with air conditioning & heating throughout the 26-storey tower being provided via a four pipe fancoil system. Leading independent air movement specialist Gilberts worked closely with BAM and global engineering and consulting firm Arup to refine the specification of the grilles and diffusers in line with the requirement to achieve ventilation of 12l/person and a constant 22°C(±2°) throughout the Grade A offices. To attain the desired air distribution patterns, the air is circulated predominantly through Gilberts’ GSL linear slot diffusers. The GSLs ventilate almost 90% of the 30 levels including lower ground and basement. Fitted into bulkheads around the perimeter of each office floor, the slot diffusers provide supply and extract of air and ensure a consistent and constant view through the floor to ceiling glazing. The GSLs were also installed into plank ceiling tiles to deliver air across the 7431115m2 floor plates on each level.
12
Either three or four slots was specified depending on location of the diffuser, to precisely balance the required airflow to keep the glazing clear of possible condensation and sufficient draught-free ventilation for the occupants across the office area.
The slot diffusers are complimented where requiredsuch as break-out areas, the business lounge, café and restrooms- with GECA eggcrate ceiling grilles, GDC-A circular face swirl diffusers and SX-100 air valves. The combination delivers the required airflow levels without draughts, delivering high performance with rapid mixing and entrainment. David Pudge, Building Services Project ManagerMidlands for BAM Construct, commented, “The aim with 103 Colmore Row was to create a landmark building that is one of the cleanest and greenest in the city, balanced alongside providing an agile working environment. Gilberts gave us best value in meeting those objectives, supporting us to select the most appropriate solutions for each area.” Gilberts (www.gilbertsblackpool.com) is recognised as the UK’s leading independent air movement specialist, offering grilles, louvres, and diffusers for natural, hybrid and mechanical ventilation. Founded 60 years ago and still family-owned and directed, Gilberts Blackpool is unique in its ability to develop components, be it ‘mainstream’ or bespoke- entirely in-house, from initial design through tooling, production, testing and supply, at its 8825m2 manufacturing facility. Its state of the art test centre, designed and built in-house, is one of the most technically advanced in the country.

Apprentices welcomed at Dudley’s Aluminium TWO apprentices have joined Cardiff-based fabricator Dudley’s Aluminium’s estimating department.
A
pprenticeships combine studying with practical training and gaining valuable workplace experience, allowing participants to earn as they learn.
Dudley’s Aluminium has created bespoke apprenticeship opportunities for Izaak Lenney, 20, and Lewis Richards, 18, to help the pair develop their skills as Estimators and Quantity Surveyors. Supporting the fabricator’s estimating team, Izaak and Lewis help prepare estimates, cost plans, rates and bills of quantities for curtain walling, windows, doors and storefronts for customers. Other responsibilities include managing costs of ongoing projects, carrying out construction valuations and ensuring that projects are completed within their projected budgets. Izaak Lenney said: “Since starting my apprenticeship I have been working alongside experienced staff at Dudley’s which has been so helpful for me. Shadowing someone allows you to learn at a faster pace and this has really helped build my knowledge as well as improve my personal and social skills.” Lewis Richards said: “The idea of university never appealed to me and, after doing some research, I concluded that doing an apprenticeship would be much better suited to me as an individual. Since beginning the apprenticeship I have developed a range of skills which not only help me in the work environment but also in everyday life. Everyone at Dudley’s is so helpful and supportive towards my development in the industry.” Neil Andrews, Estimating Director, said: “It has been our pleasure to welcome Izaak and Lewis to Dudley’s Aluminium through our bespoke apprenticeship scheme. We are proud to see them progress and develop in their roles; their enthusiasm and work ethic has seen them become assets to our estimating team. “Apprenticeships are a brilliant alternative to the traditional learning pathways, providing a more hands-on experience within the workplace while you gain your qualification. We look forward to welcoming more apprentices in the future.” Since 1993, Dudley’s Aluminium has offered clients full in-house design and production facilities, completing many successful and prestigious projects within the education, health, commercial, retail and defence sectors throughout the UK and Channel Islands. Dudley’s reputation for quality has been recognised with several industry-related accreditations. The little-known trick to help sell your home in double time… Looking to speed up selling your home? Owning a highly efficient heating system can cut weeks off your sale time, reveals new insight from Worcester Bosch and The Property Centre. • 90% of properties with modern boilers achieved 100% or more of the asking price • 35% of properties that needed an upgrade had to reduce in price in order to achieve a sale Spring is seen as one of the busiest times of year for property buyers looking for a new home with gardens in bloom and house hunters on the prowl. But, as many homeowners will know, the house-selling process can be a long and arduous journey. According to boiler manufacturer Worcester Bosch and The Property Centre estate agency, highglamour isn’t the route to selling a house quickly - a quality heating system is. According to last year’s sales statistics from The Property Centre, homes with a highly efficient boiler went under offer with 3 weeks 85% of the time. In stark contrast, only 15% of properties requiring a boiler upgrade in the coming years went under offer within 3 weeks. On top of that, 90% of properties with efficient boilers and cheap running costs achieved 100% or more of the asking price. While 35% of proper ties that needed an upgrade to their boiler and had higher utility costs had to reduce in price in order to achieve a sale. A property’s EPC rating is also a key factor buyers look at when viewing a home, something which modern heating systems can help increase, whilst saving money. Worcester Bosch states that by upgrading from a G-rated boiler to a more sustainable A-rated model (including TRV’s and
a smart controller) can save up to £580 a year, while also increasing a property’s overall ef f icienc y and desirability. Buyers beware of old boilers that can be tricky to service due to outdated parts - this can mean paying more than you bargained for due to costly repairs or replacements. Martyn Bridges, Director of Technical Services at Worcester Bosch, commented; “Older boilers can mean inef ficiencies in fuel consumption, and future maintenance will be more difficult due to rarer replacement parts on the market. “Combined this means that future outgoings will be more likely than if you buy a property with a newer and better maintained system. For installers visiting customers who are looking to sell, this is a good time to promote boiler servicing or where necessary an upgrade.” Oliver Davis, Branch Manager at The Property Centre commented; “It is not uncommon to see boiler types and installation date on property listing. This provides prospective buyers with the extra confidence about a property’s energy efficiency and reliability. “A new or well-maintained heating system visibly looks better too and helps give buyers confidence in the overall maintenance of the property as a whole.”

First of its kind - Diesel And AdBlue Bucket Bundie for J A Jackson
E
stablished in 1967, J A Jackson Quarries & Recycling Ltd are a family run business who supply quarried and recycled aggregates. Providers of sustainable building materials, aggregates and ready-mix concrete, the company also provide domestic and commercial skip hire and have a fully licenced waste transfer station and facilities for inert tipping. J A Jackson operates a fleet of more than 20 tippers, artics, skip wagons and concrete mixers. The company’s quarries in Preston, Leyland and Lancaster are all within easy reach of the region’s motorway network making access and distribution as efficient and effective as possible.
throughout the UK. Based on the same concept as the patented Bucket Bundie Fuel Bowser, Ace Plant’s Bucket Bundie Store was seen shortlisted in the Institute of Quarrying’s Excellence Awards in the knowledge and innovation category - a fantastic accolade for the ‘Bundie Bowser’ name. Ace Plant have recently launched the first Bucket Bundie that is capable of carrying both Diesel and AdBlue at the same time. This capability can already be seen in Ace Plant’s static, site tow and road tow ranges but has finally been
made possible within the Bucket Bundie range. J A Jackson first found out about the Ace Plant Bucket Bundie Bowser after searching the internet about fuel bowsers. They liked the fact that the Bucket Bundie can be transported by existing site machinery without the need for a tractor. These units remove the need for lifting chains as well as the need for the operator to leave the safety of the machine’s cab to attach any chains. It features a patented bucket loading system with special slots above the support legs that allow a wheel loader operator to easily pick up and move the bowser using the machine’s front bucket. With the loader bucket crowded back, the Bucket Bundie is held securely for safe transport across rough ground – this combination works much better than a towed bowser which can be difficult to move and reverse – particularly on rough terrain. J A Jackson say that the Bucket Bundie will be a benefit to their business as the unit will result in “less risk of contamination and we no longer need to use the 5 gallon drums”. In turn, this also makes refuelling a faster and safer processes with less risk of spillage. The Bucket Bundie Bowser is available in three different capacities: 450L, 1000L & 2250L. To find out more visit www.aceplant.co.uk or call 01908 562191.
J A Jackson have recently added the first combined Diesel / AdBlue Bucket Bundie Fuel Bowser to their fleet provided by manufacturers, Ace Plant.

Why do hydraulic hoses fail? Hoses can fail for many reasons, from incorrect installation to general wear-and-tear.
I
n busy work environments, hoses can become worn down through day-to-day use or be damaged through operator error. Products can also develop faults if they haven’t been correctly installed or maintained, such as insufficient routing or incorrect swaging risking a burst hydraulic hose. The environment in which hoses are used can also have an impact. Externally, covers can deteriorate or become damaged due to the working environment, causing a hydraulic hose leak. Internally, tubes can degrade if there are spikes in the hydraulic system or incorrect pressures are used, or if fluids become contaminated or too hot. Careful product selection and proper hydraulic hose assembly are essential – ensuring the best product is being applied and in the correct manner for the machinery or method in use. How can you minimise the risk of hose failure and/or prevent a burst hydraulic hose? Risks can develop through incorrect hose installation and usage, stresses in the hose environment, or user error.
Hose environment
28
The environment in which a hydraulic hose is used and the fluids or gases running through it will also impact its longevity. External forces and internal stresses can degrade or damage
the hose, causing sudden ruptures or gradual wearing. Maintaining the environment surrounding a hose is important to reduce risk, preventing ruptures or abrasions. Inner tubes can crack, erode or even wash out if subjected to high velocities, contaminated fluids, or dry or aged air. Understanding the impact of internal fluids or gases and their temperatures or usage pressures will minimise risk.
User error How well a hydraulic hose is installed, used and maintained will hinge on the skill and understanding of operators. Ensuring workers recognise the importance of correct usage as well as the risks involved is key to minimising the likelihood of user error.
Hose installation & usage Understanding what’s required of a hose and the stresses it will be subject to is central to reducing the risk of faults or failure. Different products have different tolerances for temperature, fluid flow, flexibility, and friction, both internally and externally. Installing and assembling hose parts correctly is also key. Correct insertion depths must be met, and hoses should be cut or swaged properly, without risk of inner tubes becoming contaminated or worn down.
July 2022
What are the risks?
Worn or ripped covering
Faulty hoses can cause operational, physical, and environmental hazards.
A worn covering suggests changes to the external environment will prevent further damage. Protective coverings can be applied, or hose guards, shields or clamps can offer additional protection to connections.
Internal degradation can risk a hydraulic hose leak, where inner tube plastics wash into connecting machinery leading to costly repairs and downtime. A sudden burst hydraulic hose could cause serious injury to workers while a gradual leak risk creating a slip hazard. If hydraulic hose replacement or repair is not prioritised, potentially hazardous fluids could reach waterways, risking environmental harm, significant fines, and reputational damage.
What are the benefits? It’s also important to recognise the many benefits of good hose installation and maintenance. Equipment which functions well improves overall productivity, delivers operational efficiencies, and ensures worker safety. Investing in the right equipment and regular maintenance will pay dividends over time.
What to do when a hose bursts/ fails (hydraulic hose repair): Should a hose fail – whether through a leak, burst, breakage or disconnection – a partial repair or full hydraulic hose replacement may be required.
Broken or brittle inner tubes or coverings Using a hose with greater resistance will prevent a hydraulic hose leak, as would applying a heat exchanger to manage fluid temperatures. Heat guards or shields can also protect hoses from external heat sources.
Burst connection or covering A burst hydraulic hose may be caused by a faulty connection or if it has been flexed too much in one spot by repeated high-pressure cycles. Understanding what depth of fitting is required and how much flexibility or friction a hose can withstand will prevent bursts or disconnections. Though there a number of factors that can cause a hydraulic hose to fail, many of the common causes are easily avoided through good product selection and proper maintenance. Investing in the right hoses and regular maintenance will reduce the risk of downtime to create long-term cost savings. Our team can advise on the best products to optimize your processes, ensure good product durability, and reduce the risk of failure.

Lincoln-based SuperFOIL Insulation is supplying 70,000m² of insulation to every one of Travis Perkins’ 48 stores across the UK, and its products will also be available at ScrewFix and Aldi as a Specialbuy. With the energy price cap having risen by £693 and energy company bosses forecasting a further £1,000 rise from October, key retailers are stocking SuperFOIL in an effort to help customers drive down heating bills. SuperFOIL, which employs 31 people at its headquarters in Lincoln, is supplying enough insulation to completely cover over 275 tennis courts - or 26 football pitches - to Travis Perkins, the UK’s leading builders’ merchant. The equivalent of eighteen and a half truckloads, this deal is a major undertaking for the family-run business. Alongside this, the company has struck a £500k contract with ScrewFix and it will be featured as an Aldi SpecialBuy this coming October, with 30k rolls of insulation and a further 70k rolls of securing tape to be supplied. This will be followed with a further Specialbuy offer in January 2023 - this time for all-important pipe insulation. Kawneer’s Solutions Create an Enviable Neighbourhood in the Heart of London VISION One of the most significant challenges architects can face is regenerating an area full of personality, but in desperate need of renovation. The challenge can be even more demanding if the project involves changing the purpose of the site. But that’s precisely what the architects in charge of the Primrose Hill project in London, had to face. With a project value of approximately £16m this project required a highly sensitive design solution to address a complicated urban context involving 28 neighbouring residential and commercial properties. The transformation visioned by PKS Architects, and developed by main contractor Knight Harwood, involved converting some of the buildings into high-quality apartments and high-specification offices using Kawneer’s solutions. The task was immense and involved six neighbouring commercial properties. The goal was achieved using multiple high-performance Kawneer products.
TRANSFORMATION Through site-specific technical visits and studies, Kawneer specified and costed various façade packages and options.
34 Photos: GG Archard
The lack of natural light was one of the many problems that needed to be rectified. It was solved using Kawneer’s AA®100 sloped rooflights. Additionally, GT70S windows were specified to replicate the building’s original steel windows to compliment the building aesthetics. For the entrance and balcony doors, the chosen product solution was Kawneer’s AA®720 doors with Glass Balustrading, thanks to the products superior aesthetics and thermal performance. For the curtain wall specification, the natural choice was AA®100 SSG, since it has smooth and seamless glass-to-glass joints without external capping.
REALISATION The resulting specification helps to enhance the aesthetics of the building façade and increase the energy performance of the building whilst meeting the cost requirements of the build with Kawneer’s market-leading product range.
Shortlisted in the 2017 BREEAM Awards, this development sustainably refurbishes and reimagines a group of six buildings to create 3,500m2 of high specification office space and four new luxury flats. The impressive results haven’t gone unnoticed. The Primrose Hill project won the 2020 GGP’s Best Commercial Installation, by Kawneer’s customer and specialist facade subcontractor, JPJ Installations Ltd.

or nearly 50 years, Snickers Workwear has been building a workwear trend that now delivers eco-friendly, technically advanced, innovative and high-quality working clothes that are built to last and look good at both work and at play. In essence, it’s sustainable workwear that can be used on site and for leisure activities too. At Snickers Workwear, we develop long-lasting, functional garments. We know that our customers demand durable products that can sustain long hours of hard work, and this is also the cornerstone behind our sustainability work. Dress for the heat
5 Cool facts About 37.5® Technology
The sun’s warmth burns, you need to stay cool and turn down the heat. So here are three key facts to keep in mind when dressing for warm weather.
• The active particles used in 37.5® technology are derived from natural sources such as coconut shells and volcanic minerals.
Ventilation
• Fabrics with 37.5® technology dry up to five times faster than performance fabrics without.
When temperatures are on the up, ventilation is crucial. It can be achieved in different ways, either by how the workwear is designed or the functionality it delivers. Two of the main features Snickers workwear integrates into its workwear to offer great breathability are the 37.5® technology for cooling comfort and Mechanical Air Flow™.
Fabric Technology and Working Comfort The fabric in your workwear definitely affects how comfortable you’ll be throughout the workday. Cheap workwear that uses poor quality fabrics might be easy on the wallet, but they wear easily, cause discomfort and chafing, affecting your mood and wellbeing. Good quality lighter fabrics – especially those with good stretchability
and those that offer UV protection - offer more ventilation and they dry quickly. While cheaper cotton-based fabrics absorb moisture and dry slowly. Snickers Workwear’s LiteWork collection is specially developed for warm days at work, giving you good-looking, quality clothes made in lighter fabrics to ensure great ventilation and comfort.
LiteWork, quick-drying workwear for improved performance The LiteWork collection is specially developed for warmer weather. It features the revolutionary 37.5® technology and stretch fabrics for the best in mobility, moisture transport and ventilation. If it’s performance you need, check out the upgraded lightweight and

The result is environmentally friendly, ergonomically designed dual-purpose working clothes that are not only designed to meet the physical demands that tradesmen and women face at work but are also ideal for some sports and leisure activities. Joe Gosling, Dave Manley and Forterra employees ready to plant
New woodland planted for Kirton as part of the Queen’s Jubilee celebrations The first 150 trees of a new woodland in Kirton, Nottinghamshire, have been planted by building products manufacturer Forterra to mark the Queen’s Jubilee. The site, which is on agricultural land owned by Forterra close to its Kirton brickworks, will form part of the Queen’s Green Canopy (QGC). A further 1,350 trees, consisting of rowan, oak, hawthorn, blackthorn, cherry and silver birch, will be planted at an event in October when the tree planting season begins again. The QGC is a nationwide movement encouraging individuals, groups and companies to sustainably plant trees across the country, in celebration of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. Intended to encourage the planting of new trees and vegetation, the QGC will also aid the regeneration of ancient woodland. For the woodland site, Forterra has commissioned Greenfields Countryside Ltd, a countryside management company, to prepare and carry out maintenance upon the land between each planting. This will ensure the trees are
well cared for and given the best opportunity to grow as quickly and healthily as possible.
while also contributing towards Britain’s natural heritage.
These trees will eventually grow into a natural, biodiverse woodland, which Forterra is naming ‘Jubilee Wood’. To commemorate the occasion, Forterra has also commissioned a specially made plaque that bears the name of the woodland and the dates of the planting.
“We are always looking for ways to contribute and improve, especially in terms of sustainability. Our involvement in the Queen’s Green Canopy campaign complements several other investments we have initiated over the past few months, including investment in a solar farm which by 2025 will generate 70% of our electricity needs.
The ecological benefits of a whole woodland of trees will be significant in a multitude of ways. Tree planting is a simple but highly effective way to reduce air pollution, at the same time creating havens for wildlife and improving the respiratory health of the people living nearby.
“We’re looking forward to seeing the site at Kirton grow into a biodiverse woodland area over the next few years. As well as helping the environment, the trees we are planting will stand as a reminder of this historic occasion for generations to come.”
Stephen Harrison, Chief Executive of Forterra, said: “The Queen’s Green Canopy is a brilliant initiative. We’re excited to join the nation in celebrating the Platinum Jubilee,

ELIS PROVIDES SUSTAINABLE ALTERNATIVE FOR PROTECTIVE WORKWEAR AND LAUNDRY With businesses looking for ways to improve their sustainability, protective workwear and laundry services provider, Elis UK, explains how its circular economy approach can help. Elis was the first company in its sector to announce its target of net zero emissions by 2045 and is one of only twelve companies selected to join the NHS Net Zero International Leadership Group. It uses a circular economy model to provide its customers with a more sustainable solution. Elis supplies protective workwear on a rental basis, collecting used items and delivering laundered garments on a schedule to meet the needs of the customer. In its circular economy approach, customers’ items are maintained, repaired, reused and redeployed in order to optimise their lifespan. Elis’s expertise and processes in its highly efficient industrial laundries help to minimize water, energy and cleaning product consumption to reduce the impact on the environment. The use of workwear maintained by Elis, rather than at home or using a traditional laundry, reduces CO2 emissions by up to 37% and water consumption by 48% (Source: EY). Based on the circular economy, Elis’s services increasingly enable customers to reduce their emissions. Comments Elis UK marketing and customer experience manager, Paul Swift: “The circular economy is specifically designed to eliminate waste and pollution, circulating and sharing products and materials and regenerating nature. The Elis circular economy model, primarily through reducing the consumption of natural resources and keeping products in use, is a sustainable solution that addresses environmental issues. In 2021, the Group’s CO2 emissions per kg of delivered, laundered textiles were 19% lower than in 2010, which is testament to the efforts made over many years. Our mission is to make our customers’ lives easier and contribute to their success through a sustainable, responsible process.” As part of its commitment to net zero carbon emissions, Elis is undertaking a number of major initiatives, which will help to ensure that its customers receive services that leave an eversmaller environmental footprint. These include continuing to improve the energy efficiency in its operations; constantly improving the vehicle fleet and delivery routes; optimising the product lifespan,
optimising the choice of materials and expanding reuse and recycling of textiles. In three years, Elis UK has already reduced its CO2 emissions by 33% and its consumption of water per kilo of laundered linen by 23%. Elis UK has been certified over many years by the Carbon Trust for reductions in CO2 emissions and water usage.” For further information see uk.Elis.com or call free on 0808 1698265.
