The IPG
– supporting independent plumbing, heating, and bathroom stores
The last few months have been difficult for us all, but we have so many reasons to be optimistic.
A
t The IPG, we have witnessed first-hand the resilience of our members and suppliers - many have gone above and beyond to keep serving their customers. When a business becomes part of The IPG and joins forces with other likeminded independents in the plumbing, heating, and bathroom sector, they can achieve economies of scale and have a voice that can compete with larger companies. Members benefit from each other’s success, by working together we succeed together. And, importantly, this collaborative approach enables IPG members to give their customers the opportunity to buy the best brands locally at great prices. Some of The IPG members share their experience:
Dorchester Plumbing Supplies joined in October 2014 as they liked the idea of being part of a group which was specifically set up for the smaller independent business and liked the ‘stronger together’ ethos. Director, Steve Rolph said, “Working with The IPG gives us a voice that is heard a lot more clearly by our customers and a presence that is noticed. Being part of the group has given us the opportunity to work with suppliers and manufacturers that perhaps would not have opened their doors to us otherwise”. WMI Simpsons situated in Finchley, London, joined in 2015. As a familyrun supplier of heating and bathroom products, Justin Protheroe, Sales Director was impressed with the passion the group demonstrated towards the independents. Recently, one of his customers commented on a favourable price that Justin was able to offer him saying that “it’s a better price than I can buy it elsewhere”, Justin
responded that it was because he was part of The IPG, who negotiate with suppliers on behalf of all their members to get favourable prices that he can pass on.
ASE Plumbing & Heating Supplies based in Ludlow is a wellestablished family-run and owned business that first opened its doors in 1988. Director, Adam Pearce, explains how the group has played a major part in its success story. “Over the past seven years, we have benefitted from several group strategies and initiatives, such as networking opportunities, marketing ideas and joint campaigns. The financial and business support provided has been second to none. The group has also helped improve our online presence by providing
us with a website that is easy to update from the IPG portal and is well supported by suppliers with offers and banners. The profile of the independent merchant has been raised massively thanks to the group. The scale and strength that can be achieved together has only been highlighted through being a member.” A new member in 2020, Howard Slowley from JCA Plumbing, and Heating Merchants based in Southend on Sea (pictured above) was attracted by the support the membership group could offer his business. Howard wanted to be “all in” on the marketing initiatives available from the start. He believes that this will benefit his business and his competitive offering to his customers saying: “I am positive about the future now I am a member of The IPG. The group has already supported my business in creating a new brand identity, new store signage and we are working together on a dual branded website, as our relationship develops, the only way is up.”
The IPG members have unique advantages that cannot always be found in larger operations, they have exceptional product knowledge, are willing to go that extra mile to support their customers, can offer the best brands at great prices and most importantly, they understand that together we are stronger! RECIRCULATION UNITS FOR KITCHENS IN HIGH DEMAND New Recirculation Unit for Commercial Kitchens, the CK ReCirc
™
T
he demand for these recirculation units is always growing, as more unusual and restricted spaces are being optimised by catering business owners. Recirculating will allow such kitchen professionals to take advantage of existing spaces without the high cost and practical implications that would apply to retrofitting permanent equipment like exhaust hood fans and ductwork, which filter airborne grease and smoke out into the atmosphere. CK Direct’s ReCirc™ is a self-contained kitchen ventilation unit with environmental design considerations that also eliminate major risks to the kitchen, such as ductwork fire hazards. Multiple stages of inventive filtration within the unit reduce grease, particulate, smoke and odour before reintroducing cleaner air to the kitchen – The unit therefore, needs no direct duct connection to the atmosphere.

Timing is Everything by Wojciech Brozyna - MD of Aluprof UK Time does have a real tangible value in business, especially where various processes are integrated to produce a single completed product or service. Usually with more processes involved the greater number of cost streams will be influenced if a delay is experienced. We have all heard of the ‘Just In Time’ (JIT) principle of manufacturing and the production of motor vehicles is one of the most well-known adopters of this Japanese production techniques. In this manufacturing process, a single screw, worth less than 1p can hold up a complete production line with costs in their £1,000’s for every minute of lost production. In addition to having the product or service in the right place at the right time, or what we know as ‘logistics’, is the ability to have the correct product specification, in the right quality. If the 1p screw head will not fit the tooling on the line, again the production line will grind to a halt. It is upon these key principles of ‘logistics’ and ‘specification’ that Aluprof have become one of the quickest growing architectural aluminium systems businesses not only in the UK, but across Europe and in overseas markets. From the initial outline designs of a new project, it is crucial that specification assistance is available at the right time. By having a wide range of products and also flexibility within the product range by way of a comprehensive profile portfolio, initial guidance to the specifier can instil significant confidence in the product proposed being right for the application. In the UK, London has by far the highest density of architectural practices many of who work on overseas projects as well as the UK. It is important that any architectural systems house wishing to work closely with specifiers in London has a dedicated office offering support to architects in the South East.
04
When it comes to agreeing the specification detail in design is crucial for a specifier, not only how the product performs but how it looks in the building once installed.
May 2021 The ability of the systems supplier to quickly and easily change parts of the product to meet the specifiers vision, is key to gaining and importantly maintaining the specification. Furthermore, to offer the ability to quickly design and cut new dies for aluminium extrusion to achieve this in a timely manner is recipe for specification success. In addition to the importance of ‘logistics’ and ‘specification’ in order to keep costs to budget, is the ability to look at ‘Value Management’. For any given project there are ways to reduce costs in the supply chain without the need to reduce material specification, these techniques include the ability to offer bespoke lengths of profile to reduce profile off-cut wastage and the ability to have some of the product manufactured prior to shipping to the fabricator installer. Every project becomes bespoke in its mix of profiles, bespoke lengths, colours and hardware, the key is to manage the process efficiently through fabrication and delivery to ensure JIT installation on site. Aluprof work with some of the top facade
companies in the UK and Ireland to achieve both detailed specification and tightly programmed installation on site to meet site programmes. It is normal for European manufacturers to ship product to a UK warehouse facility, often in a bespoke finish and or length and once the order is complete for it to be delivered to the fabricator installer. One of the key advantages in logistics for Aluprof UK comes from their ability to transport material orders direct to fabricator installer customers in the UK from their extensive production facility in Bielsko-Biata located in Poland. These deliveries take place twice weekly in the UK to ensure the product is in the right place at the right time. This method of single drop delivery negates double handling through a UK warehouse and enables complete orders to be phased into shop floor production plans to meet programme. Programmes often change due to circumstances outside that of the fenestration supply chain, when this occurs it is important to ensure that the chosen systems company can have the flexibility in
design and supply to meet these challenges. In order to assist with these potential issues, Aluprof’s extensive fabrication facility in Bielsko-Biata can be engaged to help maintain the supply of fabricated product to site. Since setting up the Aluprof Project Office at the Business Design Centre in London, the company has rapidly grown their specification influence in the UK with their high performance architectural aluminium systems. Further expansion of the company’s headquarters in Altrincham now provides specifiers with meeting facilities and an extensive showroom of commercial systems to view. With overseas growth across Europe spreading into the Middle East and firm roots already in the East of the USA, the company is becoming a global player in facade supply. Further information is available on the companies website at aluprof.co.uk or direct from their UK office in Altrincham on 0161 941 4005.

New Southgate Project encompassing flat to pitched conversions across social housing estate wins award
06
As part of a wide scale refurbishment project from Enfield Council, Langley Structures Ltd delivered a series of Flat to Pitched (FTP) roof conversions across multiple residential premises in New Southgate. This project recently won RCI’s Pitched Roofing Awards for ‘best use of a flat to pitch system’.
May 2021
T
he project saw the conversion applied to seven buildings located on Bowes Road, Cross Road and Massey Close in Enfield, as part of the larger ‘New Southgate’ refurbishment being carried out in the area. Approved in 2010, the New Southgate regeneration project provides quality homes, local shops and community services across the neighbourhood. Langley Structures worked alongside Playle & Partners LLP’s, who provided lead architectural services as well as project management, contract administration, quantity surveying and principle designer roles. ENGIE, Langley Structures’ Approved Contractor, delivered the regeneration solution.
“We have had a positive experience working with Langley on this project from design stages through to completion on site”, commented Sarah Primarolo, Architect at Playle & Partners LLP. “The regular inspection correspondence and site progress photographs were particularly helpful.” By implementing the FTP conversions, Enfield Council’s properties benefit from enhanced aesthetics, but also a longer life cycle to the roofs and an increase to the overall value of the premises. In addition, the roof now has improved drainage and external rainwater run-off, which will avoid future damage and repair costs from internal drainage leaks and blockage. New external rainwater gutters and downpipes were connected to new soakaways (BRE Digest 365) diverting rainwater from roofs from joining the existing combined foul and surface drainage. This reduction in rainwater volume relieves demand on an old drainage system. Residents benefit from the advantages of FTP conversions by providing elements such as improved thermal performance, reducing the heating demand within the building’s interior.
One building on Bowes Road had a unique installation change as an essential health and safety measure whilst undergoing an FTP. Langley designed hot rolled transfer steels for ENGIE to close off a large light well at flat roof level within the newly constructed pitched roof void. Within the communal stair core roof, existing apertures were used to incorporate a new sun tube to allow natural light into the building and to maintain daylight savings due to existing light well decommissioned - this also enabled the team to introduce a new automated passive smoke extract to the communal areas. By using the existing apertures, it also meant reducing building and decorative works externally and internally for the client and reducing disturbance to those living in the building. A fire rated duct provided a sealed riser to the automated louvre mounted on a roof top kerb. The smoke louvre powder coating finish was matched with the predominate two-tone terracotta tile colour to reduce the visual impact on the roofline. Langley Structures’ own in-house design team began by providing initial surveys of the existing premises, including drawings of both the existing and proposed designs to assist with feasibility and planning. Roof cores were taken to determine the existing roof’s construction and assembly, as well as dead load and wind calculations to assess the fixing pattern and pull out resistance required for the new roof design load. “Enfield council and Playle and Partners LLP selected a roofing specialist with the skills and expertise to provide options on flat roof renewal or flat to pitched conversion”, stated David Gatehouse, Head of Langley Structures Ltd. “Having worked previously with us on similar projects, we were able to assist in every step of this conversion, from design through to installation by ENGIE. Bowes Road is a great example of how FTP conversion contributes to the regeneration of an area, whilst extending the maintenance cycle of the building itself, and we look forward to working with Enfield council further on future projects”.

Stepnell Meets Major Milestones on Multiple Midlands Residential Schemes NATIONAL contractor Stepnell has made significant progress on three residential projects, based in Leicester.
T
he schemes include two student accommodation projects and one private residential build – which is Aimrok’s Wellington House, a £9 million renovation project recently won by the Stepnell’s East Midlands office. The works will see the conversion of the existing office block into 105 apartments, including demolition, structural alterations, drainage, window replacement, partitions, mechanical and electrical services, internal finishes and associated external works. Tom Sewell, regional director at Stepnell, said: “We’re extremely excited about making substantial progress on three great residential projects across Leicester. The national housing shortage is currently a big focus for the construction sector, so helping to expand the Midland’s residential offering is something we’re very proud of and hope to keep doing in the future.” The construction partner has also started on site at Leicester city centre’s newest student accommodation facility, Friar Lane. The £5.4 million scheme – commissioned by Obstrat - includes the construction of 90 self-contained studio apartments across five storeys, with a recessed element at four storeys to provide a transition between the development and the rest of the buildings that already populate Friar Lane at a lower level. Not only is the team being conscious of how the build will have an impact aesthetically on the surrounding conservation area, but they
are also addressing challenges faced by the site’s historic location. Situated in Greyfriars conservation area, Stepnell – in conjunction with the University of Leicester Archaeological Services - carried out archaeological investigations before works could begin in order to preserve the Roman and medieval remains discovered on site. Tom added: “Despite being built to serve the same purpose, each of these sites are incredibly unique and have presented individual challenges for the whole team to navigate and solve collaboratively. However, due to our extensive experience working on private residential and student accommodation schemes, we have been able to conquer each of these challenges, moving forward with the projects and adding them to our ever-growing portfolio of residential developments. “Drawing on our extensive experience and lessons learnt within this sector, we are able to provide our clients with real solutions to their challenges and bring true value to their projects.” Stepnell also demonstrated its ‘can do’ approach while completing Upperton Road another student residential project based in Leicester and the contractor’s sixth project for Zone Developments. The £2 million refurbishment and new build project is in close proximity to a school, meaning that Stepnell had to negotiate restrictive access without communal disruption. The team’s ability to overcome these difficulties resulted in
the creation of 46 studio apartments, along with a range of modern communal facilities – including a gym, cinema room, common room, management office, study pods and laundry room. The team also incorporated a living green sedum room to make the build more sustainable. Neil Thakkar, director at Zone Developments, said: “We have worked closely with Stepnell on a number of purpose-built luxury student accommodation schemes across Leicester and it never fails to deliver high-quality builds. Not only are the team committed to displaying professionalism, experience and quality, they are also able to navigate difficult situations and find solutions to problems during the course of construction. “We value Stepnell’s expertise in the residential sector very highly and look forward to working with them again in the future.” Tom said: “All of the challenges that we have faced – along with the obvious restrictions faced while working on site throughout the Covid-19 pandemic – have only allowed us to excel even further and refine our skills as a leading residential provider both in the East Midlands and nation-wide. The pandemic has further demonstrated to us and our clients how adaptable and solution focused our staff and supply chain are.” To find out more about Stepnell’s, visit https://www.stepnell.co.uk or join the conversation at @Stepnellltd.

Mental Health Charity, Mates in Mind, launches short film highlighting the importance of understanding and addressing workplace stress
C
hris, a 30-year veteran of the construction industry, was a caring and loving husband, father, son, brother, uncle and friend. In 2019, Chris suffered a mental health crisis brought on by severe stress, which developed at rapid speed and had catastrophic consequences. In partnership with Chris’s family and friends, this Stress Awareness Month, mental health charity Mates in Mind will be sharing ‘Chris’s Story’, a short film designed to raise awareness and understanding of the very real impact that workplace stress can have on our lives and the importance of recognising the signs that someone might be struggling.
Michelle, Chris’s wife comments: “Chris’s death has left us as a family with extreme heartache and unbelievable grief and we know nothing will bring Chris back; but we hope by sharing his story we can save other families from this devastation. Chris never experienced any mental health illness previously so we can’t emphasise enough if it can happen to him it can happen to anyone.” James Rudoni, Managing Director of Mates in Mind stated: “Chris’s story sends a clear message that only with the support and commitment of leaders in the construction industry can we address stress in the workplace, transforming the overall mental health of workforces and ensuring a meaningful change. We know that there needs to be more awareness and effective management of stress risks in the workplace and that enabling people to open up conversations about mental health while providing them with the awareness and education to discuss the topic, continues to be the most immediate and effective starting point for improving mental health. Together we can help develop open working environments where the stigma and silence around the topic can be eliminated- and that is exactly what we aim to do this Stress Awareness Month.”
14
According to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), in the UK alone, there were over 828,000 workers suffering from work related stress, depression or anxiety (new or long-standing) in 2019/20, which resulted in around 17.9 million working days lost.
For the construction industry in particular, the negative impact of the global pandemic has added to an already pervasive mental health challenge within the sector. As reported by the Office for National Statistics (ONS), the suicide rate among construction workers is already three times the national average for men, equating to more than two construction workers taking their own life every day . Mental health charity, Mates in Mind, is committed to changing these statistics by getting the construction and related sectors talking and taking action. This Stress Awareness Month, Mates in Mind will be asking organisations within the construction and related sectors, to commit to installing long term change within their businesses to not only ensure a healthier and safer workplace environment for their employees, but also to help change the wider industry culture around workplace stress. Just one small step, such as an annual stress risk assessment, can help organisations to identify work-related stress risks within their company and help them meet their duty of care in the identification and mitigation of work-related stress. Additionally throughout April, Mates in Mind will be sharing Chris’s story to raise awareness and understanding of the very real impact that workplace stress
can have on our lives and the importance of recognising the signs that someone might be struggling. The charity is encouraging organisations to use this month as an opportunity to open vital conversations about stress at work and to encourage an open and honest dialogue with staff. To support these conversations, the charity is providing free training and resources throughout the month. Understanding the importance of managing and reducing workplace stress has arguably never been more important than now, in the shadow of the COVID-19 epidemic, as businesses begin to focus on returning to work and supporting their teams as they adjust to their new ways of working. Employers are recognising that providing a mentally healthy workplaces is a necessity and not a luxury for the way we work today, because there is no health without mental health. To join Mates in Minds month long campaign, see their website for more information or share their video ‘Chris’s story’ available across their social channels. TRIGGER WARNING: Please note, the following video includes mention of suicide and may be upsetting to some viewers: Chris’s Story

Smoke safety specialist joins Exyte Hargreaves to support new solution launch

D
uring these 30 years, David has worked across a number of key disciplines including the design and manufacture of multiple smoke and environmental control systems and ventilation projects, having partnered with a variety of leading Architects, M&E consultants and Contractors from across the UK. During his time, David was instrumental in delivering multiple major engineering projects, including the 2012 Olympic Village development. SFS wish to offer the client the opportunity to go to one company for all the smoke control systems from including fire rated ducted systems instead of the traditional way of splitting systems up now they can be handed over to one company, with one responsibility. Talking of his new appointment, David said: “As an electrical engineer, my focus has always been on the detail of smoke and ventilation systems, ensuring they offer the highest quality solutions possible. Being involved in the delivery of these products and systems, in such a highly regulated and specification-led industry, brings its challenges but I have always strived to ensure those vitally important standards are met across the life safety industry. “I’m pleased to have joined Exyte Hargreaves and look forward to working with its highly skilled workforce. Exyte Hargreaves’ approach of providing an end-to-end package in specification and delivery is a unique one and long overdue within the industry and it’s exciting to be involved from the start.”
Andy Sneyd at Exyte Hargreaves, said: “David brings to Exyte Hargreaves an unrivalled amount of expertise in the fields of smoke ventilation and environmental control. When we opted to step into this arena, we created a strategy which would see us recruit the best talent in the sector and upskill the wealth of quality engineers we already have working with us. This is another step in that process. There is no doubt that David will be instrumental in us being able to saturate the market with our smoke safety and ventilation products and solutions, and we look forward to having him on board as we work together to build a prosperous future for Exyte Hargreaves.”

Many potential buyers are already living in the local area because they are very attached to the region and all it offers. Others are moving from London, wanting to be part of a close-knit community and to have close proximity to parks, leisure facilities and lovely shops and eateries. In particular, our buyers increasingly want to have access to a garden, be near outdoor space, and have a dedicated room as a home office or perhaps in some cases a room that can be used for hobbies or exercise. They also want space to entertain and for long awaited family reunions.”
18
Osborne House is the sister development to nearby Wintersbrooke which was launched mid last year and comprises six exclusive, spacious two and three bedroom apartments varying from 1,236 to 1,822 sq. ft. Set within a secluded, communal garden, the apartments are part of a gated community with terraces or balconies to all homes, located in a quiet, exclusive residential area near to the centre of Sunninghill, close to Ascot in Berkshire. “One of our Wintersbrooke residents was very keen to know how his paperboy was going to gain entry given how much consideration we had given to good security. We were able to assure him that the video entry system, accessed via the Comelit app. means all deliveries will be kept secure even if our purchaser is out enjoying his daily walk.” kebbell.co.uk/new-homes/berkshire Viewings are available by appointment only and Kebbell has put safety measures in place to make show homes COVID-19 secure and to comply and exceed all government guidelines.

Perfectly Match A pedestrian traffic control system that complements automatic doors has been introduced by GEZE UK providing both safety and security.
20
hed P
May 2021
ACE, Pedestrian Access Control Equipment is a range of speed lanes and turnstiles that offer an efficient control of pedestrians in and out of buildings. More cost effective than manual checks and providing round the clock control in buildings that are operational 24 hours a day, they are ideal for controlling access to any part of a building that requires it, as well as the entrance. From the simplest, easy to install tripod system for buildings such as leisure centres to the most stylish, highly sophisticated security with anti-tailgating sensors designed for the most demanding government buildings or banking institutes. The PACE range can be tailored to the needs of any specification, there is a choice of control devices - push button, card reader - or single or bi-directional use, and different lane widths. To complement the design or match automatic doors different finishes can be specified – brushed stainless steel, polished stainless steel, or RAL powder coating. Where security is a high priority, options include high panels, anti-tailgating functions, IRIS reader, and finger-print or face recognition. But whatever the demand for security, the visual aspect of the building is never compromised. Controlling large numbers of people entering or leaving a building ensures their safety but in an emergency, the power is turned off and all motorised systems can be used freely in both directions. GEZE UK offers a complete package of pedestrian control that includes access control and automatic doors. Said Andy Howland, Sales and Marketing Director for GEZE UK “Together GEZE automatic doors and the PACE range of access control enables specifiers to specify the complete package to control the flow of people in and around a building ensuring safety and security at all times for those using the building”. To find out more or for a brochure on PACE email info.uk@geze.com or for more information about GEZE UK’s comprehensive range of automatic and manual door closers visit www.geze.co.uk

PM Boris Johnson visits MTX’s Hereford Country Hospital site MTX Contracts were awarded the £12million contract as part of the UK Government’s ‘Project Speed’ Prime Minister Boris Johnson was welcomed to MTX’s latest scheme at the site of Hereford County Hospital, where the MTX team were hard at work constructing 3 fast-track wards. Granted a £12 million contract to carry out this essential work as part of the Government’s ‘Project Speed’ initiative, the on-site build will give the NHS 72 valuable extra hospital beds.
What is Project Speed?
24
Project Speed is the name for the UK Government’s Infrastructure Delivery Taskforce; a UK Government initiative which was launched in the summer of 2020 to speed up and improve the delivery of important infrastructure. Quite simply, and as the PM himself put it, the initiative aims to help Britain ‘to build better, to build greener, to build faster’.
For the NHS, this meant a huge capital investment of £3billion to support the delivery of infrastructure that was desperately needed to keep the healthcare system running smoothly and to improve services. The scheme has been described as “the most radical reforms of our planning system since the end of the second world war”.
May 2021
How will project speeds goals be achieved? To achieve their goals of a better infrastructure, the Infrastructure Delivery Taskforce is making radical changes to Government policies and strategies that previously slowed down the delivery of infrastructure. This will reduce the overall time taken to deliver projects. Fast-tracking construction doesn’t mean quality slipping. One of the task forces goals is to ensure projects are finished to the highest quality, and that they are carried out ethically.
Better MTX use off-site construction techniques which limits any disruption to day-to-day business on live sites. •
It is an engineered solution
•
There is less disruptive vehicle movement
•
They have safer construction sites
•
They minimise disruption to operational sites
•
They have an exceptional factory quality control process
Greener
Which sectors will see benefits?
•
MTX’s buildings are already designed with ethical construction in mind.
There are a number of sectors that will benefit from Project Speed.
•
Increases recycling opportunities for waste materials
•
Reduces waste from construction activities by up to 60%
•
Improved the energy performance of building
•
Reduces carbon emissions created during construction
•
•
The Healthcare Sector – the NHS will benefit massively from the project as resources are driven to build new hospitals, improve existing facilities, direct change where it is needed and increase A&E capacity. This will help the sector to deliver responsive, dedicated care The Education Sector – the project will fasttrack investment in the education sector. This includes schools and further education facilities.
As well as these sectors benefitting from the project, the environment is a huge focus. Ethical construction is a key part of this project.
How MTX delivers better, greener, faster construction MTX use an innovative offsite construction system and other fast-track methods, which brilliantly support the better, greener, faster ethos introduced with this scheme. The methods used during the new ward scheme at Hereford County Hospital aim to reduce construction time by an impressive 50%. This reduction in time means the NHS can use their new facilities and reap the benefits of extra bed space months earlier than if traditional construction methods were used. So how do MTX meet the Better, Greener, Faster specifications of Project Speed with their MMC (Modern Methods of Construction)?
Faster Less time is wasted by using off-site construction, there is no need to wait for demolition to be completed or groundworks to be put in place. •
Reduces construction time by up to 50%
•
Constructs sub-structure and super structure in parallel
•
Utilise pre-manufactured MEP services
•
Utilise off-site finishes
Why hospitals and organisations should get involved The amount of red-tape involved in construction can mean that some essential, important projects have previously not gone ahead. Project Speed has removed a lot of this red tape and made many of these projects possible, without compromising on ethical aspects. The project has made is much easier for public sectors and companies to create partnerships with construction firms, whilst also making the projects more cost-effective.
Find out more details about Project Speed We’d love to talk to you about how we can help you use Project Speed to fast-track your ethical construction projects. Feel free to get in touch to find out more.

WRc appoints Andy Blackhall as new Managing Director
W
ater Research Centre Ltd (WRc), an RSK company and one of the world’s leading scientific and sustainability consultancies, is delighted to announce that it has appointed Andy Blackhall as its new Managing Director, effective from 1 April 2021. The independent centre of excellence for innovation and growth, based in Swindon, UK, boasts more than 90 years’ experience of delivering leading technical research and innovation services to the global water, waste management and energy sectors. It joined the RSK group in August 2020. Current Managing Director, Mark Smith, will move from the position, after 32 years at WRc, into a new role as RSK Group Business Development Director for Water, supporting all RSK businesses as the group collectively develops into a leading global player in the water sector. Andy joined WRc in 2018, as head of asset management. He was later appointed as commercial director, responsible for the organisation’s strategic growth. In FY2021, the company delivered its strongest trading performance for the past 10 years. During this period, Andy has also worked for Her Majesty’s Government as a water specialist for the Department of International Trade, working across the globe to promote the strengths and capabilities of the UK water sector. The announcement comes at a significant point in WRc’s history, as, having joined the RSK group in 2020, it is expanding its service offering and is going from strength to strength in the industry. The business forms part of RSK’s agriculture, land and property management (ALPM) division, led by Ian Strudwick. “Andy’s 15 years in consulting, contracting and water utilities provides strategic and operational breadth of view,” comments Ian. “Andy has extensive experience in technology and innovation and is an advocate for the sector’s ability to contribute to the future of sustainable green growth. CAN Geotechnical Awarded Edale Treatment Works Project CAN Geotechnical has been awarded a contract to carry out slope stabilisation and scour protection work in Edale, Derbyshire, for MWH Treatment. MWH Treatment has been contracted by Severn Trent Water to decommission and demolish the existing sewage works and install a new package plant treatment works within the existing site boundary serving the local residents of Edale Mill Cottages.
I
n Edale, work began in March 2021 to replace an old water treatment works, necessitating the removal of the existing sewage works assets and structures, and bank stabilisation measures. This includes the temporary removal of Listed Building asset gateposts, which fall into the curtilage of Edale House (Grade II Listed Building), in order to facilitate access to the site and protect the assets during the work. In addition, the worksite is adjacent to a SSSI area. CAN was enlisted to provide a design and build solution to stabilise the 50m length of riverbank of the River Noe adjacent to the old water treatment works in the Peak District National Park. Following site preparation by MWH, including demolition of the old water treatment works building, CAN began work on the riverbank in mid-March. The chosen solution, designed for CAN by RSK’s in-group Geosciences team and suitable for a 60-year design life, is to install a soil nail and facing system to the slope to prevent deep seated failure and erosion of the soils, along with a scour protection system at the base of the bank to prevent further undermining by the river. Over 200 soil nails ranging from 1.5m to 7m length will be drilled into the slope and grouted in position, safely securing the 500m2 area of steep soil slope.
Working top down, 360 tracked excavator mounted drill systems will be used to install the soil nails, and the facing system comprising high tensile Tecco steel netting and coir matting will be installed to fully stabilise the upper slope. Grout interceptors and dust suppression will be utilised, to ensure the river is protected during the soil nailing works and a silt curtain will be installed downstream of the works to contain disturbed sediment, prior to installing the scour protection. The scour system will utilise rock mattress and rock rolls, provided by fellow RSK Group company Salix River & Wetland, which CAN will install using long
reach excavators working from the top of the bank, with operatives using rope access to reach the work area. Minor reprofiling of the bank will be carried out at the same time, and the rock mattresses and rolls dressed with topsoil to help embed them. Pre seeded coir matting will be used to promote devegetation regrowth, seamlessly blending in the newly stabilised section with the surrounding natural riverbank environment. For details about this, any of CAN’s other recent projects, or any of the company’s products and services, visit the company’s website at www.can.ltd.uk or call 01474 538100.

Kiloutou Showed its Capacity to Adapt and Pursue its Long-Term Strategic Goals in 2020 During the unprecedented world crisis linked to the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020, Kiloutou demonstrated its capacity to adapt and its determination to pursue its long-term strategic goals: accelerate its digital transformation, maintain growth momentum and ramp up its environmental transition. 2020: STRONG CAPACITY TO ADAPT At the end of 2020, an unprecedented year roiled by the health and economic crises linked to the Coronavirus pandemic, Kiloutou demonstrated its capacity to adapt and react fast, thanks to the commitment of its employees working on successive continuity and business recovery plans. Against this extraordinary backdrop, Kiloutou presents 2020 consolidated revenue of €646.1 million (-12.4% vs preceding year) and robust EBITDA at 31.2%. The revenue decrease was more significant in France (-15.6% vs 2019), especially in the second quarter due to the lockdown and the almost total shutdown of the Construction sector. Kiloutou’s business picked up in June and revenue in the second half of the year fell only moderately (-5.2%) compared to the preceding year. The activity was more resilient outside France, where Kiloutou is present in Germany, Italy, Poland and Spain.
30
The Group’s diversified customer base in building and public works (61%) and nonconstruction activities (34%), together with private customers (5%) proved an undeniable advantage in weathering this global crisis.
On 31 December 2020, Kiloutou had 530 branches in five countries and retained its position as second-largest French and third European player.
2020: ACCELERATION OF DIGITAL TRANSFORMATION In parallel, the Kiloutou Group took advantage of the crisis to accelerate its digital transformation. It now proposes numerous online services to better serve its business customers: online payment, management of rental contracts, consultation of quotes and invoices, reservations and requests for return of equipment, etc.
2020: CONTINUED GROWTH MOMENTUM While managing the crisis situation, Kiloutou also maintained its growth momentum thanks to internal growth and acquisitions, in France and elsewhere. In France, the Kiloutou Module agency network was strengthened by the acquisition of Locamodul and MC Loc. In parallel, the Group set up Kiloutou Signalisation, its first ex-nihilo subsidiary specialising in worksite signage
May 2021
and protection. In Germany, Kiloutou grew its network through acquisition of the equipment rental activities of the German company Wiesecker Werkzeugvermietung.
• integrating the acquisitions made in the last few years in Germany and those made in France in 2020;
2020: RAMPING UP ITS ENVIRONMENTAL TRANSITION
• accelerating its environmental transformation, notably by increasing the share of alternative-energy equipment in its fleet and continuing with its transport investments (heavy vehicles and vans).
2020 also gave Kiloutou the opportunity to ramp up its CSR policy commitments, with the introduction of a new environmental strategy aimed at reducing direct CO2 emissions by 40% looking to 2030 and achieving carbon neutrality in 2050. To meet these objectives, Kiloutou has defined an environmental action plan that aims to reduce the carbon footprint of its direct (transport and branches) and indirect activities (use of its equipment on worksites): • Faster replacement of the fleet of heavy vehicles and vans used to deliver equipment with alternative-energy vehicles (Liquefied Natural Gas, Compressed Natural Gas). In 2020, Kiloutou’s fleet included 50 clean vans. The goal is to replace all light vehicles with alternative-energy vehicles within five years. • Continuation of the branch renovation and construction programme to meet energy and environmental regulatory requirements. The goal is to reduce global energy consumption in the branches by 40% looking to 2030. • Transition to alternative-energy equipment. In France, 85% of the 2021 investments in motorised equipments will be hybrid, bi-energy, electric and Stage V. • Launch of a range covering more than 3,000 alternative equipment items to help Building and Public Works customers transition to a low-carbon policy.
• rolling out the Kiloutou brand in Italy;
Olivier COLLEAU, CEO of Kiloutou says: “Despite partial lockdowns and the measures imposed to manage the pandemic in the different geographical regions where Kiloutou operates, we have successfully returned to an activity level close to that we enjoyed pre-Covid. Our teams have demonstrated extraordinary resilience and agility to adapt to this unprecedented situation. I am extremely proud of them and would like to thank them warmly for their commitment and energy. While managing the crisis situation, we have stayed on course to achieve our longterm strategic goals: digital acceleration, maintaining growth momentum and ramping up our environmental transition. The health crisis is still not over – we remain cautious, close to our clients and focused on our performances. We are confident about the favourable outlook for the rental sector and convinced that Kiloutou’s strengths will be perfectly adapted to the needs of the actors concerned.”
2021: ROAD MAP AND OUTLOOK With the health situation still uncertain, Kiloutou intends to pursue its business activities with confidence and caution, around four main priorities: • accompanying professional clients on a daily basis by maintaining a high level of service;

April 2021 Jacksons Fencing supplied 161m of their 3m high Jakoustic® Reflective acoustic barriers to surround the perimeter of the car park and the drive-thru. The acoustic barriers are constructed from smooth planed timber tongue and groove boards which are profiled, and slot together between unique timber tuning fork posts, to minimise air gaps that sound could travel through. Due to the height of the barriers, the posts were supported with steel spur posts, which were galvanised and powder coated black for increased protection against corrosion. Its solid design with a flat contour means that the barriers also increase privacy and security. Jakoustic® Reflective is ideal for boundaries between commercial and residential properties, because its natural timber design is visually similar to a more robust version of an attractive tongue and groove garden fence. The barriers work by reflecting sound away from the flat profile, and can reduce noise by up to 28dB.
Excess noise - off the menu Jacksons Fencing has worked with McDonald’s and their franchises a number of times over the years, supplying them with quality timber acoustic barriers to reduce noise around newly built and existing developments.
M
cDonald’s has over 1,270 restaurants in the UK and employs more than 120,000 people. Looking to build over 300 more restaurants in the next ten years, a new restaurant and drive-thru has recently opened in Broadstairs, Kent. The new store offers something different to customers, with digital drive-thru menu boards that allow customers to see exactly what they’re ordering, and help reduce delays at the collection window. Additionally, there is a family room and children’s play area inside.
34
Formerly the location of a different restaurant chain, the site is next to a residential area, so a noise impact assessment was an essential part of the development process. The noise assessment determined that an acoustic barrier of 2.4m high was required to reduce the impact of noise on the nearby residents - in line with local council policies. The report considered the impact of various factors, such as vehicles using the drive-thru lane and
the car park, weekly deliveries, and customers making orders at the customer order displays. After a later review of the report, it was decided that 3m high barriers would be better suited to protect the residents from noise, and offer more privacy. The Noise Policy Statement for England (NPSE) explores the issue of sustainable development, a principle that underpins all government policy and should be pursued in an integrated way. It states that noise should not be treated in isolation of other factors, i.e. aesthetics and quality. With this in mind, the choice of noise mitigation solution needed to incorporate sustainability, protection and enhancement of the natural environment, and efficient use of resources and energy.
Jacksons Fencing’s acoustic barriers fit well with the sustainable principles of NPSE, as they are kiln dried and pressure treated for long-lasting protection from rot and insect attack, and come with a 25 year guarantee as standard. If you have a requirement for acoustic barriers for any type of development, or need advice on a project, contact Jacksons Fencing on 0800 408 4763.

Changing the face of facades:
Millboard launches ground-breaking cladding collection A major new range from the award-winning company
M
illboard has launched a suite of cutting-edge cladding materials that will cement the company’s reputation as one of Britain’s leading home and garden material manufacturers. In its thirteen-year history, Millboard has continually broken new ground, notably for its flagship UV, split, rot and slip-resistant decking product that has been used in builds as prestigious as the Burj Al Arab, Kew Gardens and Wimbledon. The new range of cladding takes its cue from the first-rate attributes of the decking range. Available in two styles (‘V Groove’ and ‘Board and Batten’) and a wide range of colours, it provides the same assurance of UV resistance and eliminates the risk of warping, twisting or rotting. And just like the decking range, the cladding has been hand-moulded from carefully selected natural timbers, to provide an unmistakably organic look. From the smooth finish of the V Groove to the pleasing grain variance
of the Board and Batten style, there’s a Millboard cladding style for every property type. A year in development, this product is perfectly designed to stand the test of time and to require minimal maintenance. In fact, the distinctive chamfered cut of the profiles enables the rain to wash the boards, dramatically reducing the need for manual cleaning. The boards are made from a polyurethane-mineral composite that boasts greater eco credentials than rainforest-depleting timber. The unique properties of this enduring material mean that you’ll never suffer from streak marks around window seals, be disappointed by dramatic colour changes, or have to maintain it with expensive and timeconsuming treatments. The extra-wide sizing of the boards means that the cladding can be mounted quickly, providing a lightning-fast renovation of the exterior of a property, and the boards can also be used internally, for feature walls and dividers. Additionally, the cladding can be mounted vertically or
horizontally to suit the tastes of the architect or homeowner. As well as providing an instant refresh to a property, the boards can also help homeowners to achieve a better energy rating. As it is made from polyurethane foam, Millboard cladding has good insulation properties and protects against extreme heat or extreme cold. With a growing domestic focus on thermal efficiency, cladding can help to sell your property, or to achieve the energy rating you need to rent it out. Some homeowners have struggled with building regulations for putting bigger windows in, but with the insulation provided by cladding, it can often be possible to design bigger apertures into the building. The team at Millboard are excited about their latest development, and the launch of the new cladding range represents a significant milestone for the company. The new cladding collection marks Millboard’s expansion into a broader range of high-calibre home and garden products. Millboard Cladding was officially launched November 2020. For more information about the product range, visit Millboard’s website or contact the team today on 02476439943 or enquiries@millboard.co.uk

o compliment the Drive Alive range, Bond It have now developed a ready-touse, high gloss, solvent based sealer to provide a clear, glossy protection barrier against oil staining and weed growth. Suitable for use on paving, blocks and patios, the sealer is hard wearing and resistant to chipping. It boasts long lasting weather resistance, even against UV, water and ice and once cured enahances the colour of the substrate, offering a glossy enriched finish. The product also stabilises and reduces weed growth between sand joints meaning less interim maintenance is required.
Supplied in 5L tins, High Gloss Block Sealer is a simple application by brush, roller or squeegee, it is quick curing and can be applied all year round. Its deep penetrating properties provide a long lasting protective finish for up to 2 years and will maintain the performance life of the substrate. Schöck product solution is just dandy at Regency Heights
T
he Old Oak and Park Royal areas of West London are undergoing a massive transformation. A £26 billion masterplan to create a new district is taking shape in this part of London and it will see around 25,000 new homes built over the next 20 years. An already advanced scheme is the First Central development, part of which is the imposing Regency Heights. Built on the former site of the Sir Giles Gilbert Scott designed Guinness Brewery, it is a residential-led, mixed use scheme providing 807 residential units in three courtyard blocks wth a public plaza. The buildings range from five to twenty-seven storeys and the design is reminiscent of the Brewery’s early modern industrial brick architecture. The southern block is anchored by a brick-clad residential tower, which when complete, will create a new 90m high local landmark. The majority of apartments are fitted with steel balconies. So it is vital that with the design detailing any risk of thermal bridging is minimised and a key consideration throughout is the use of effective structural thermal breaks.
Consequences of thermal bridging
40
Local heat loss is a major factor, resulting in more energy being required to maintain the internal temperature of the building. Also, low internal surface temperatures in the area of the thermal bridge can cause condensation. This can result in structural integrity problems with absorbent materials, such as insulation products or plasterboard. Mould growth is also a possible risk, which in a residential situation can cause asthma and allergies. The proven solution to any such problems is the Schöck Isokorb structural thermal break. In the case
of Regency Heights, over 2500 units of the Isokorb T type SK are installed. This is a load-bearing thermal insulation element with an 80mm insulation thickness for connecting cantilevered steel balconies to a reinforced concrete slab. The innovative fastening of the support beams makes any steel structure durable, safe and visually attractive, permits a high degree of prefabrication and minimises installation time on site. The T type SK transfers positive or negative moments and shear forces. And since it can bear heavy loads, it is ideal for resolving the technical and structural issues of designing modern balconies.
Guaranteed performance The Schöck Isokorb T type SK units guarantee totally verifiable performance standards, meet full compliance with all relevant UK building regulations and offer BBA Certification and LABC Registration. When incorporated into residential
buildings, the required fRsi value, the temperature factor used to to indicate condensation risk (that must be equal to or greater than 0.75) is always comfortably met. The range complies with the Government Standard Assessment Procedure, SAP 2012, concerning CO2 emissions from buildings and respectively heat losses through non-repeating thermal bridges. The lambda values of the Isokorb also enables energy loss to be reduced by as much as 84% to 91%. Anderton Concrete Celerbates BBA Certification for Stepoc
As part of Anderton Concrete’s continued commitment to producing the highest standards in product innovation, quality and performance, its industry leading Stepoc Concrete Shuttering System has recently been awarded the British Board of Agrément (BBA) Certificate 20/5774.
T
he independent accreditation, which is based upon rigorous national and European standards, is a reflection of Anderton Concrete’s unrivalled engineering excellence and dedication to supporting industry professionals in achieving a world-class built environment. Providing a direct alternative to shuttered concrete, the unique Stepoc system significantly reduces installation times and associated costs to increase on-site efficiency and safety, whilst also maximising overall build quality and longevity.
42
The pre-cast concrete shuttering blocks weigh less than 20kg per unit and are highly-engineered and dimensionally coordinated to readily accept vertical and horizontal reinforcement.
This enables concrete to be pumped directly into the inter-connected cavities, while the system’s unique cascade design ensures smooth and consistent distribution, forcing out any air and eliminating segregation to create walls that have immense compressive and lateral strength. Tim Fields, Technical and Development Manager at Anderton Concrete, said: “Since its launch in 1984, Stepoc has set the standard across a diverse range of sectors, from military to education, by providing a revolutionary approach to construction that cannot be replicated.
