David Cairns, The IPG’s Head of Supplier and Commercial Strategy commented: “This is a good news story, its reassuring to see that in times of chaotic change, a British manufacturer is investing in products and marketing.” During the infamous credit crisis in 2008, research revealed that companies that started to invest more in marketing during this

time showed to perform better in the post-crisis period and experienced an average growth in market share of 1.3%. New products that are launched during recessions tend to have a greater and longer-lasting impact during these times than during others. Companies that saw significant growth during and after the previous recessions had the following factors in common; they acted early, they had a long-term vision and they focused on growth, instead of cost savings. Nike Lovell, Head of Marketing at The IPG said: “For any organisation in times like these, it is especially crucial to focus on good marketing and Multipanel have done just that. The British consumer may now appreciate the value of products made in the UK.” To find your nearest independent stockist visit: www.the-ipg.co.uk

nmcn releases half year financial results National construction company nmcn has announced its half yearly financial results today - with a slight decrease in revenue to £181.6 million compared to £184.0 million the same period last year.

Despite a strong start to 2020, COVID-19 and operational challenges impacted the business in the second quarter. Profit before tax for the six-month period ending June 30 2020 was £0.8 million, with cash of £15.8 million. Its solid order book for completion in 2020 is circa £350 million (compared to circa £356 million for the previous year). The firm saw revenue increase by 3.7% in Q1 to £97.9 million and pretax profit was up by 5.9% to £1.8 million. However, during Q2 at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic site shut-downs, productivity constraints, changes in working methodology, and prolongation of contracts impacted profits. All of nmcn’s sites are now fully active and working at COVID-19 compliant production capacity and the current order book stands at 93% of expected full year revenue.

08

Positively, the Built Environment segment saw significant growth in revenue increase of 19.1%. The Telecoms business unit continued to perform well in the first half of 2020 and has secured the Virgin Media Morpheus frameworks in two operating regions and further works for British Telecom. As anticipated, there has been a reduction in revenue for the Water segment during the AMP transition year, from £132.1 million in 2019 to £119.8 million. During the period, nmcn has been successful in securing new strategic frameworks with Anglian Water, the Coal Authority and a number of frameworks in asset security works for public sector bodies. John Homer, chief executive officer of nmcn, said: “The first half of 2020 comprised two very different quarterly trading periods. We started the year well, with the financial results reflecting an encouraging order book and the benefit of a number of our initiatives. In the second quarter we faced the immediate challenges of COVID-19 with the suspension of projects and the disruptive impact of new operating requirements and these were compounded by some other operational issues. In overall terms, I am delighted to be reporting a profitable result for the period which we believe further

demonstrates the value of our business model and dedication and capabilities of our teams. “We have sought to protect the health and wellbeing of all our stakeholders and I am deeply proud of the manner in which our entire staff has responded to the challenges of maintaining activity in critical areas and re-launching projects that have been suspended. This is a strong demonstration of our people as an overarching differentiator. “In the longer term, the attractions and opportunities of our addressable markets remain. In the near-term, we are likely to continue to endure the constraints of a coronavirus environment but with a healthy order book and strong fundamental growth drivers and opportunities within our addressable markets, we believe the business will continue to progress.”

Look After Your Hearing – With Proper Protection Peter Dumigan, managing director of the Hultafors Group UK, owners of Snickers Workwear, Solid Gear Safety Footwear and Hellberg Safety PPE writes: Long term damage to your hearing can be caused by the noise from regular daily use of even the most basic hand tools – drills, angle grinders, disc cutters, circular saws, even hammers – if you don’t wear proper ear protection. The Control of Noise at Work Regulations 2005 are designed to workers on site from the risks caused by noise. Noise induced hearing loss is the most commonly reported occupational disease with over 800 million people around the world are affected by the condition. Over 30% of all workers are exposed to hazardous noise levels and one in four manufacturing workers who are exposed to loud noise does not use hearing protectors. Hearing damage caused by exposure to noise at work is permanent and incurable with research estimating that over 2 million people can be exposed to noise levels that are potentially

harmful. More often than not, hearing loss is gradual as a result of prolonged exposure to noise, but when combined with normal loss of hearing as you age it becomes a rapidly deteriorating condition. As an added hazard, exposure to unsafe noise levels can also result in tinnitus, a permanent sensation of background ringing or buzzing your ears. But in the most serious of cases, immediate damage to your hearing can also be caused by sudden loud noises. Regulatory Protection As far as the health and safety regulations are concerned, the noise threshold for providing hearing protection is now a daily exposure of 85 decibels. More importantly, the level at which employers must assess the risk to workers’ health and provide them with risk information and training is now 80 decibels. So, making the right, well informed decision is as important for the selfemployed as it is for employers.

2. Sound waves strike the eardrum, which starts to vibrate.

As an employer, you have to provide your employees with properly maintained hearing protectors if they ask for them and if their noise exposure is between the lower and upper exposure thresholds. You also have to make sure they use them properly and establish hearing protection zones where the use of hearing protection is compulsory. Dont Take Your Hearing For Granted Too often we take our health and wellbeing for granted and probably never stop to consider what fantastic sensory organs our ears actually are. As well as helping us communicate, our hearing helps to keep us safe. It is the link to our surroundings and is vital for how we communicate with others. Aside from issues with your mobile phone, think how you’d cope in hazardous situations if you couldn’t hear an alarm bell, a car horn or someone calling to you. We rely on our hearing in so many ways, which is why we should protect it. Unfortunately, for a significant part of the population, this ability is partially or entirely lost, because of exposure to loud noise. Hearing loss can never be restored but avoiding damage to your hearing is in most cases a matter of selecting and wearing the proper protection.

4. This movement makes fluids in the cochlea flow, causing tiny hair cells in the cochlea to move and communicate with the hearing nerve.

1. Sound waves reach the outer ear and enter the ear canal.

12

3. The vibration of the eardrum causes the three tiny bones, the hammer, anvil and stirrup to move (the smallest bones in your body).

5. The hearing nerve sends the information to the brain with electrical impulses, where they are interpreted as sounds.

Our hearing isn’t designed for many of the sounds we are exposed to today especially the unwanted sounds - those that can potentially damage your hearing. So remember, if you need to raise your voice or scream

plant all make noise, so does the process of using tools and applying fixings. It’s constant, almost incessant.

For instance, drilling into wood at 92 decibels would only give you 10 minutes safe exposure against your full day’s allowance!

be affected by anything that impairs the hearing protectors seal, such as long hair, facial hair and glasses!

Working on site all the day means that noise is constantly being poured into your hearing. But what many people don’t realise is that every noise source and the length of time you’re exposed to it has an exposure level measurement and you’ll be surprised how quickly you can reach the maximum daily safety exposure dose without proper protection.

Drilling into metal creates 96 decibels of noise, a chain saw 99 decibels, a circular saw 101 decibels, drilling into concrete 108 decibels and an angle grinder 109 decibels.

Finally here’s some useful tips. Choose hearing protection that fits correctly and is comfortable the entire time you are exposed to noise at work and even if you’re mowing the lawn or strimming.

So take a look at the chart above and you’ll see that if you haven’t got proper hearing protection, you shouldn’t be on site working and handling tools for very long at all!

Make sure you’ve got 100% wear time in noisy environments and remember, the use of eyewear can reduce the hearing protector’s attenuation of between 3-8 decibels, so if possible, select thin eyewear frames.

Noise Sources These are examples contain dominating Mid-High frequency noise : Centrifuges , Hydraulic pumps , Gas cutting , Wood working machines, Hydraulic pumps, Impact tools , Grinding machines These examples contain dominating Low frequency noise : Engine generators, Electric furnaces , Diesel generators , Melting furnaces, Ground vibrating machinery, Blasting machines, Compressor units

Choosing The Right Hearing Protection Always use hearing protection when exposed to harmful noise and if necessary, choose a protector adapted to your work environment, ie a product with ‘level dependent hearing protection’. Hellberg Safety recommends that the calculated level under the hearing protector should be around 75 decibels given that its real-life (attenuation) performance may be affected because of incorrect fitting, misuse and poor maintenance. Performance protection can even

Finally, your health and wellbeing on site is just as important as getting a job done quickly, efficiently and in comfort. So choose your PPE products carefully and with that in mind check out the Hellberg Safety website www.hellbergsafety.com where you’ll find all the information you need on choosing precisely the right kind of passive or active hearing protection whatever you’re doing or wherever you’re working on site.

Gilberts helps deliver world-class technology without drama Delivery of a key, complex element of a core services building for a world-class centre without “a huge song and dance” has laid the foundation for a long-term working relationship.

The trust has been established between the team at Rydon Construction and Gilberts Blackpool, for the National Composites Centre, that saw bespoke solutions pioneered to protect the quality and validity of build. Explained Rydon project manager Neil Spurway: “It’s the first time I personally have worked with Gilberts; I wouldn’t hesitate to use them again. They delivered a complex project efficiently, cleanly and, bearing in mind the complexity of the job, without a huge song and dance.” Rydon turned to Gilberts to design and manufacture the ventilation louvres for part of the National Composites Centre – the UK’s world-leading composite research and development facility that collaborates with customers from all sectors to solve the most complex engineering challenges. The louvres were needed to allow optimum ventilation with appropriate levels of weather protection int the building which will accommodate workshops, office and plant including huge compressor units. However, any penetration of the building cladding system would have invalidated

warranty. Gilberts worked closely with Rydon to design out that problem, by developing a bespoke fixing system for the louvres that secured the banks direct to the building structural steelwork with special angled cleats. A further complexity to the project was the size and shape of the WGK75 louvre banks. Panel lengths up to 7.5m long and 5.7m high with standard performance louvre blades fixed at 75mm pitch varying in length between 1.4m- 2.3m were manufactured, supplied and installed by Gilberts. More than 200 mullions plus mitring of all blade sections on the abutting corners were needed to create the 310+m long screen along two facades at high level. Gilberts also supplied and installed a series of removable panels and

three separate louvre double doors at low level to facilitate access. Commented Gilberts Area Sales Manager John Hanger, “The National Composites Centre demonstrates beautifully the expertise Gilberts can bring to ensure a successful, smooth project delivery. Our skill results from our family being a strong team with expertise in all elements- design, manufacture, and installation.” Founded almost 60 years ago, Gilberts Blackpool is Britain’s leading independent air movement specialist, and is unique in its ability to develop components, be it ‘mainstream’ or bespokeentirely in-house, from initial design through tooling, production, testing and supply, at its 95000ft2 manufacturing facility. Its state-ofthe-art test centre, designed and built in-house, is one of the most technically advanced in the country.

Pintsch Bubenzer Highlights Torque Loss During Movable Bridge Rotations Pintsch Bubenzer USA is raising awareness about the torque that is lost as movable bridges are raised, typically up to 70°, and the advantages of disc versus shoe (drum) brakes. Pintsch Bubenzer, which makes high performance disc and drum brakes for severe duty applications, continues to give presentations to architectural and engineering professionals in the infrastructure sector about the significant loss of torque that some brakes experience as bridges are raised and lowered—losses that should be accounted for during the initial design of a bridge. It is called rotational torque loss because the machinery (motor, gearbox and brake) physically rotates with the bridge. When the bridge is closed the machinery is in the horizontal position; as the bridge opens, the machinery rotates with the structure. On the majority of the bridges where the brakes rotate, the bridge opens in the center. These types of bridges are called bascule or rolling bascule bridges. However, a bascule bridge can be either a single leaf type (opens at one end) or a double leaf type (opens in the center). A typical movable bridge contains two sets of brakes called motor brakes and machinery brakes. The motor brakes are connected to the high speed shaft of the electric motor; the machinery brakes are located on the output shaft of the secondary gearbox (also called a reducer). The brakes are designed to hold the bridge in either the open or closed position. They take into account wind loading or ice buildup that may occur so as not to allow the bridge to drop when it is in the open position. The electrical controls are primarily responsible for bringing the bridge to a complete stop, while the brakes are applied right after the bridge stops and are primarily used as a holding

mechanism. The number of brakes and the size are dependent on the machinery design of the bridge. Mike Astemborski, executive sales manager—movable bridge market at Pintsch Bubenzer USA, said: “Many engineers are surprised just how great the torque loss can be; on a drum brake we can be talking about a 25% loss. During the rotation of the bridge and the machinery the center of gravity is changing. There is no physical impact on the brake but mechanically there is a slight shifting of the mechanical components— thruster, levers, brake arms and brake shoes—that affect the torque of the brake.” Astemborski explained that when the company performs educational sessions to architectural and engineering firms, the content explores four main areas: torque loss on shoe brakes during rotation; torque loss comparison between a disc brake and a shoe brake; loss of friction when using chrome-plated

brake wheels; and loss of friction when using stainless steel brake wheels. As an example, when using chrome-plated brake wheels, the co-efficient of friction is reduced from 0.4 to 0.33, which equates to a 17.5% reduction in brake torque. Pintsch Bubenzer is of the opinion that the disc brake is the better option to reduce the amount of torque loss. Testing has shown that the disc brake produces less than 4% torque loss due to its mechanical configuration. In addition, the disc brakes are supplied with a sintered lining material, which is a huge advantage over the molded lining material of a shoe brake due to a heat dissipating characteristic. Astemborski said: “We support our presentations and literature with science and fact; our colleagues in Germany designed a rotational test bench that simulated the opening and closing of a movable bridge in 10° increments.”

Aspect panoramic doors have been purpose designed by Eurocell’s technical specialists to include a host of features that enable quick and simple fabrication and fitting, without compromising on the quality or appearance of these stunning bi-fold doors. Doors feature a standard Eurocell Logik gasket and are compatible with our patented Logik Chamfered and Ovolo beads – so if you’re already fabricating Logik windows and doors, there’s no need for additional stockholding. The door profile and outer frame glazing gaskets are coextruded, so you won’t have to buy gaskets separately and fit them yourself – saving you time and money. Aspect has been designed with no need for a dummy mullion, reducing the number of components you need to fit – for faster, more efficient fabrication, and a neutral-coloured anodised aluminium track is used to complement all door colour options, so you won’t have to stock a different track for every door colour. Aspect doors feature a large clearance around door leaves, allowing easy on-site adjustment for hassle-free installations. Butt hinges are also adjustable, providing greater tolerances when fitting the leaves. It means all doors can be fabricated at the same time,

since adjustments can be made on site to ensure a precise fit. The slimstepped outer frame reduces the amount of plaster cutback required on site, speeding up installations and generating minimal dust and waste. Adjustable roller sets allow the doors to be easily jacked or lowered into position on site.

a choice of hardware colours. Aspect has a white internal finish as standard, to maintain a bright, fresh interior, with some colours available with colour both sides from stock. Aspect bi-fold door profiles are guaranteed for ten years, and door furniture is guaranteed for five years.

The outer frame can also be mechanically jointed together on site, so the whole unwieldy frame does not have to be delivered in one piece. That makes transportation and handling much simpler and safer. All hinges positively locate into the steel reinforcing for a strong, secure finish. Combined wool-pile and gasket slots give you the freedom to choose the type of seal required for each job. Both types of seal fit into the standard slot, so they are easily interchangeable.

That means you can give your customers the assurance of a robust, well-designed, precisionmade product that’s built to last.

Like all Eurocell PVC-U products, Aspect comes with an exact colourmatch guarantee.

Funding could be the one catch that could jinx the planning reforms: Paul Oberschneider Expert analysis by CEO and founder of Hilltop Credit Partners “Showing no signs of a lockdown fatigue, the housing market is enjoying a fantastic recovery with reports suggesting a growth of 15% in UK house prices by 2024. The market momentum has been boosted by Boris Johnson’s “build, build, build” speech and other announcements like no tax on homes priced £500,000 or less until March next year. Planning law reforms will prove to be another shot in the arm for the housing market. However, all this early show of confidence could hit a major roadblock if housing developers fail to get access to development finance in a timely fashion. “A recent CBRE report shows how development finance availability in the UK has contracted since the COVID-19 outbreak with fewer lenders considering new opportunities and most focusing on their existing loan books. A potential second wave could further exacerbate this situation and funding may dry up even more. For a developer, this will mean reduced access to capital, likely increased costs due to involvement of different lenders since one lender will not stretch enough when it comes to providing funds required for the development.” “Access to development finance is set to get more crucial for housing developers as buyer preferences show drastic changes since the pandemic. The ongoing lockdown has radically changed the way Brits are wanting to live and work. This is especially true for city dwellers who want to venture outside the capital in search of more living space. To keep up with the changing demand, the housing developers are now trying to catch up with the developments “in the regions”

26

and looking for development finance options to provide high-quality, affordable housing for such buyers. Lenders will therefore have to move away from the ‘safety’ provided by the London market, recalibrate their approach and diversify their books.” “No doubt the government is backing the sector and putting its weight behind, but it is equally important to not slip at this point and help developers grow when it is most needed. Even government organisations set up to provide funding like Homes England fail to make the flow of funds any easier. At Hilltop, we try to address this funding gap every day and our products reflect that. We have committed nearly £30m in the past nine months to fund experienced SME developers across the country and

continue to remain cautiously committed to funding high-quality assets and developers. We go that extra mile compared to the market at large, let alone high-street banks, and we also assist developers on the equity side too, thus providing a comprehensive one-stop solution.”

The Importance of Delivering Hot Water with Temperature Control By Dan Madagwa, MEng

Introduction The supply & use of hot water is vital to the efficient function of almost all industries. From NHS Healthcare to Care Homes to food production, hot water is critical yet often an overlooked integral part of the system design is the overall ability to accurately control hot water temperature. This capability can allow you to preemptively tackle or avoid issues arising from poor hygiene regimes or bacteria. The significance of hot water temperature

control itself is being given a lot more attention, as seen in a CIBSE journal article entitled “Taking the temperature – domestic hot water” which looked at the potential of reducing carbon and providing modern, safer low energy solutions simply by focusing more on temperature and revising guidance (CIBSE, 2020). The importance of being able to accurately control hot water temperature will be explored in this paper.

How is precise temperature control achieved? Temperature control is the procedure where the change of temperature of a space or substance is measured and the movement of heat energy into or out of said space or substance is adjusted to achieve a desired set temperature. In the case of hot water heaters, this process is governed by a temperature controller. This instrument simply calculates the difference between a set-point and a measured temperature by taking an input from a sensor and giving an output signal for the connected heat element. Venturing into system design, another way to ensure the desired temperature is provided at the outlet is by using thermostatic mixing valves (TMV’s). A TMV uses an internal thermostat that blends hot and cold water to achieve this result.

• • •

Limitless supply of hot water provided constant gas and water connections exist. Lighter and require less space. Advanced models can supply very precise temperature accurate hot water.

Table 1 opposite shows a comparative analysis between a continuous flow and storage water heater. As you can see from the data, the storage tank option tends to be less efficient and consume more energy. Once you factor in replacement costs, a continuous flow hot water heater is the more cost and energy efficient option as well as being better at reducing the carbon footprint. However the most important feature with regards to temperature control and what makes continuous flow the preferred option for this application is the ability of some continuous flow water heater models to constantly provide temperature accurate hot water with a precision of up to ±1°C.

Temperature control in practise Legionella & ACOP L8

Hot Water Delivery units and systems

For more details on RINNAI products visit www.rinnaiuk.com

The two main forms of supplying hot water are the conventional storage tank water heater and the continuous flow (instantaneous) water heater. The main differences are outlined below. Storage water heaters: • Have a limited amount store of water. • When store depleted takes time & fuel to reheat before use. • Require greater plant room space. • Materials handling issues, heavy and cumbersome. • Standing losses. Continuous flow heaters: • Hot water is heated and provided solely upon demand. • Evidence and data that they are mechanically and operationally more efficient.

ACOP L8 is the Health and Safety Executive Approved Code of Practise that governs the control of Legionella in water systems. Legionella – full name Legionella pneumophila – is a bacteria that causes, amongst other less serious conditions, Legionnaires disease, a potentially fatal form of pneumonia. Legionella bacteria are common in natural water sources but the conditions are rarely conducive to people catching the disease. This usually occurs in purpose-built water systems and the risk of being exposed to Legionella increases in warm, stagnant water, passed to humans via breathing in miniscule, aerosol-like droplets of water. Specific guidance for the control of L pneumophila in water systems is provided in ACOPL8 and its associated regulations, HSG274 Part 2. When it comes to combating Legionella, precise temperature control is one of the strongest weapons available. The bacteria begins to die in temperatures above 50°C and cannot survive above 60°C Certain conditions support the growth of bacteria, such as a temperature range of 25°C to 45°C as well as the presence of certain deposits such as lime-scale, rust, sludge

and organic matter can also increase this risk. This is why it is important to control the risk of exposure and do all you can to minimise it by introducing measures that restrict the growth of bacteria and reduce exposure. Traditionally this is done via temperature control, keeping stored water at least at 60°C and ensuring distributed water is supplied with 50°C water (55°C for healthcare) at outlets within 1 minute.

Scalding When discussing temperature control of water the risk of scalding should always be considered, especially in the health and social care sector. According to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), high temperatures over 44°C can create a scalding risk and as such water temperatures discharged from outlets accessible to those vulnerable or where there is the potential for full body immersion must not exceed this temperature. Engineering controls can be put in place in order to ensure this. These include using the aforementioned thermostatic mixing valves which should be placed as close

38,007.3

to the outlet as possible, temperaturerestricted or temperature accurate instantaneous water heaters. This would allow water of a safe temperature to be provided continuously and reliably at the outlet. For example there could be a scenario where a water heater was set using the controller to provide water of 43°C directly to the outlets. In this case, the use of thermostatic mixing valves would not be required though there could be legionella concerns. However regimes could be put in place to help control this. One method that could be used in addition to normal operation is a pasteurization regime. This would consist of raising the water temperature very high to over 70°C, the point at which legionella bacteria are killed instantly, and flushing the system. This could be done when the building in question is not occupied, the water is returned to a safe temperature prior to occupancy and it could potentially allow for water to be supplied as low as 43°C during regular use, reducing consumption immensely.

Hygiene regimes

Food Processing

The temperature of hot water is critical for many hygiene regimes across a variety of industries such as laundry for hotels, care homes and healthcare, particularly with regards to the cleaning and disinfectant processes. Being able to reliably provide water at these temperatures not only serves to properly disinfect the items in question every time but gives the end-user peace of mind. According to the Health & Safety Executive’s HSG (95)18 Hospital Laundry Arrangements for Used and Infected Linens, “The washing process should have a disinfection cycle in which the temperature in the load is maintained at 65°C (150°F) for not less than 10 minutes or, preferably, at 71°C (160°F) for not less than 3 minutes”. This is especially important as there are a number of harmful bacteria that can survive temperatures of over 50°C degrees such as Staphylococcus aureus, a well-known pathogen that if allowed to invade the skin deeply can cause a plethora of diseases, ranging from superficial skin infections that cause boils to more systematic issues like pneumonia and blood infections. Maintaining high temperatures ensures that such bacteria are killed before they have a chance to become a problem.

The need of hot, potable water is essential in any food processing operation as it is a major component of the cleaning process. To reduce the risk from hazards, comply with legislation, presenting a hygienic visual image or to ensure the variety of bacteria and residue left behind during production is removed, having clean equipment is of paramount importance. Hot water (thermal energy) plays an integral role in the effectiveness and rate of the cleaning method. Increasing the temperature generally increases the rate of the chemical reactions involved in the cleaning and so make it more effective and take less time. In the same vein, higher temperature of water may require the use of less detergent, allowing money to be saved. The goal is often to find the perfect balance between cost, efficacy and food safety and so the ability to precisely provide water of specific temperatures is hugely beneficial and allows great control.

Conclusion It is clear to see that implementing temperature precision and control in the specification and installation of hot water systems is vital and will only continue to grow in importance, particularly in the current pandemic and the aftermath. Being able to choose between providing water hot enough to combat Legionella and disinfect laundry or low enough to prevent scalding is a useful tool and if it is more widely incorporated as one of the first steps in the design process, a plethora of issues can be avoided and effectively design-engineered out of the equation.

No snags for BeadMaster’s busiest period Manufacturer of game-changing housebuilder products, BeadMaster, has skimmed straight over its busy period, making a big impression on the construction industry. BeadMaster has become known for offering a range of innovative products that deliver a perfect finish around sockets, switches, downlights and sprinklers. The range includes: Rectangle, for standard double gang socket and switches, Square, for standard single gang socket and switches, and Circle, for downlights and sprinklers. The smooth finish is created by stapling the products to the plasterboard, enabling plasterers to skim over socket, switch, downlight and sprinkler holes quickly and easily. The recyclable centre is then removed with a hooked blade, which follows the groove of the cover plate to reveal clean, reinforced edges. In addition to providing a superb result, first time, every time, the products save money and effort for all involved. Despite the challenges the construction industry has faced as a result of Covid-19, the company has achieved several noteworthy milestones this year, which have been highlighted below.

Willmott Dixon makes BeadMaster mandatory on all projects Willmott Dixon has made BeadMaster the mandated method for electric switches and sockets on all of its projects. To ensure that the innovative products are used on all Willmott Dixon projects where a skim coat is specified, the contractor

They will also be opening two new offices to facilitate further expansion. AHCI has its headquarters in Warrington, and new offices will be opening in Horsham and Birmingham to accommodate the growing team. The company also signed a long-term deal with an A rated insurance carrier in August. The company is known for providing latent defects cover for projects ranging in size from individual self-builds to £100m developments, and the deal with new A rated capacity forms part of their long-term plans for the sustainable growth of the business. Despite the current financial uncertainty affecting many UK businesses, AHCI celebrated two record months for sales in July and August, recruiting eight new members of sales staff. Director of Sales, David Sumner, said: “It’s a credit to our hardworking and dedicated team that we’ve not only continued to serve all of our existing clients throughout the pandemic, we’ve also celebrated two record months for sales during a challenging period for all businesses. “Building upon this success, we’ve recruited eight new members of staff to join our sales team, and we’re continuing our recruitment drive. Opening new offices in Horsham and Birmingham will help to ensure that we have the space we need for the business’s ongoing expansion.”

40

Paving the way for their current success, in spring, AHCI’s Directors acted swiftly to implement new hygiene and safety measures,

and also to facilitate remote working wherever possible, to ensure that they were able to continue to work effectively with their construction clients throughout the UK lockdown. Sam Rowlands, one of the founders of Romal Capital, said: “We were about 90 to 95% of the way through the Park Central project (a 14-storey, 129 apartment development which is part of Liverpool’s flagship waterfront regeneration project) when all of the Coronavirus-related disruption began. “We were working with AHCI on the project, and they were able to attend the site safely and efficiently, adhering to all social distancing guidelines. In a very challenging climate for construction, we were

able to sign off on the building, and we were issued with the certificates to allow us to complete. “It was a good experience at a time when we were in the eye of the storm. I’ve worked with Advantage for a few years now and it was a natural fit to continue to work with them on this project. They are very responsive and they deliver in a timely manner. They turn up when they need to turn up and they get the job done. Even during a pandemic!” Following a summer of business growth, Advantage’s Directors are poised to take on more new staff throughout autumn, with demand for structural warranties remaining strong. September 2020 To alleviate the very real problems of noise, keeping sound and air pollution outside, Vectaire has three new models in its vertical whole house heat recovery range. The Midi, Maxi and Maxi Plus are now available with integral acoustic attenuation lined with superior sound deadening materials for really low sound levels and tested by BRE. Sound pressure levels are down to <5.0, <5.0 and 6.9 dBA respectively. They are easy to install – nothing extra is required other than the unit itself – they are the quietest, lightest and smallest on the market. Efficiency, performance and economy remain the same as the standard models. “BY-AT” models incorporate summer bypass and frost protection, and commissioning is via an integral LCD. Windows can be kept firmly closed while these MVHRs provide energy efficient ventilation and a comfortable environment. Products are SAP PCDB Listed and manufactured in our own factory in the UK to ISO 9001. Vectaire offers a design service ensuring units are installed in the best possible way to provide efficient, effective, low energy and very economic ventilation. Vectaire can also organise installation, commissioning and maintenance of these products and can supply all necessary accessories. All Vectaire’s residential ventilation is detailed in the latest Low Energy Catalogue.
