Automation security enhanced with PROFINET’s additional protection measures From the very beginning, in parallel with the first PROFINET specifications, PI published an extensive security concept, which was further refined and adapted in multiple steps. It was not sufficient simply to protect plant networks and automation components, but more importantly, the used protective mechanisms and concepts should not interfere with the running of production operations. Moreover, protection concepts had to be easy to implement and remain affordable. But even more important is that the concepts must be able to be adapted time and again to suit current developments. With these factors in mind, PI has now expanded its IT security concept.

Defense-in-depth The IT security concept used for PROFINET employs a defense-indepth approach. With this method, the production plant is protected against attacks – particularly from the outside – by means of a multilayer perimeter (including, among other things, firewalls). In addition, further safeguarding within the plant is possible by dividing into zones through the use of firewalls. Furthermore, a security component test ensures the ability of the PROFINET components to withstand overloading in a defined scope. This concept is supported by organizational measures in the production plant within the framework of a security management system. A never-ending task Security is, however, a topic that must be continuously adapted to the current development and, as a result, is never finished. This applies in particular with respect to the

4|

increasing networking of production plants. The use of PROFINET components with added value, e.g., web or OPC communication, thereby ensures increased, direct communication with higher-level systems outside of the security zone. At the same time, it is becoming increasingly difficult to separate PROFINET networks. Moreover, the networks are becoming larger, meaning that more and more components are connected together to form a network and interact with one another. A successful attack on a single (PC) system within such a cell therefore bypasses upfront security measures. Widely distributed plants also hinder the physical protection of networks and access points. Unauthorized persons could possibly gain access to the PROFINET network. Additional measures for end-to-end security For this reason, previous concepts, which rely primarily on isolating

the production plants, must be supplemented with new concepts that enable protection within the cell. PI, therefore, expanded the previous measures with further-reaching protective measures. This includes a credential management system, e.g., for authentication of the devices and an end-to-end security expansion for PROFINET communication as a configuration option. As not every application has the same security requirements, three security classes were defined for PROFINET. More Information Further technical details and practical examples can be found in the Industry 4.0 Highlight "Security" at https://www.profibus. com/technology/industrie-40/. In this section on the PI website, current topics, issues and trends from Industry 4.0 applications are addressed so that the user can easily implement and realize them in practical work. M

otion Control and Robotics specialists YASKAWA continue to develop their MOTOMAN range of robots to meet these demands as illustrated by their newly developed MOTOMAN-PL series. The new MOTOMAN-PL series represents 4 additional options of palletising robots complementing their existing models covering lightweight palletising applications and those which can handle larger, heavier items such as building materials.

New Yaskawa Motoman-Pl Palletising Robots For Improved Handling & Control Using Less Energy Increased automation, adapting to new labour-saving manufacturing practices and the consequences of COVID-19 is accelerating the demand for effective robotic solutions. This is especially the case in industries where logistics are key such as food, pharmaceuticals and cosmetics where there is increased urgency to improve efficiencies by automating the packing and stacking of individual products.

The new PL Series are compatible with the established and successful YRC1000 robot controller ensuring easier set-up and ease-of-use, along with improved energy-saving performance thanks to a power generation function. In addition, the 2 new PL models (the 190 & 320) are designed to be more user-friendly, slimmer than the previous MPL series and have an improved payload capacity. Where manufacturing applications involve the loading / unloading of bulkier items the weight of the final item can be compounded with heavy packaging such as cardboard which can be easily damaged or will deform if not handled correctly. These situations require the combination of a soft grip as well as strong power and typically air-drive or suction is the solution although this requires larger, more intrusive piping. With the new PL models Yaskawa adopted a large diameter hollow structure for the wrist shaft at the tip of the arm which eliminates the risk of interference with peripheral equipment and the robot arm itself. This design also provides a wider operating range in the height direction so it’s more flexible as it can be loaded up to the optimum pallet size. The improved energy saving performance is thanks to the YRC1000 robot controller used on the medium and larger robots which features the power regeneration function enabling energy to be generated when the motor is decelerated. This has proven to reduce power consumption by up to 30%, depending on the operating conditions at each installation. Also, as the connection between the controller and the robot is via a single cable, users benefit from reduced wiring and therefore less setup time. Optimising communication between the robot controller and manipulator is crucial to the overall system performance and its maintainability and these new PL models include features which help. For example, when the communication line inside the manipulator is disconnected or an encoder

error of each axis servo motor occurs, an error alarm is displayed on the programming pendant making it easier to identify the error on the corresponding robot shaft. In addition, they are equipped with a multi-port as standard in each part which enables quicker restoration should the communication line be disconnected. Finally, Yaskawa’s palletising application software ‘MotoPal’ enables automatic generation of robot operation programs, simply by setting conveyor and station positions, product sizes and loading / unloading patterns. First UK installation of Konecranes’ S-series crane Konecranes has supplied a material handling system, incorporating an S-series crane, at ABB Limited’s Drives Service Workshop (DSW) in Coalville, Leicestershire. The contract represents the first installation of the new generation S-series model in the UK. Konecranes has completed the first UK installation of its S-series crane at ABB’s Drives Service Workshop in Coalville.

T

he system supplied comprises a 16.1 m span overhead single girder gantry and a 3.29 t SWL S-series electric rope hoist. The crane has cross and long travel speeds of up to 20 m/min and a hoisting speed of up to 3.1 m/min, with a 4.29 m height of lift. The crane is operated via a radio remote controller. ABB is a worldwide leader in the fields of electrification, robotics, automation and motion technology, with an emphasis on energy saving and sustainability. Its UK operation employs 1,800 people, operating from 15 locations and supplies £0.5 billion of innovative solutions, products and services to a broad range of market sectors. The DSW provides reconditioning, preventative maintenance, service, repairs, genuine spare parts and cleaning for low voltage variable speed drives and drive modules, which cannot be undertaken in the field. The company identified the need for a material handling system for the safe, ergonomic and efficient movement of drives within the workshop. Initially, ABB’s engineers had been considering a lightweight crane system, but the fact that an increasing number of large and heavy drives were being serviced prompted a rethink. The company specified the S-series crane on the grounds that its features are particularly suited to the DSW’s maintenance operations. The S-series crane uses synthetic rope, which requires no lubrication, eliminating

10|

the possibility of delicate electronic components within the drive units being contaminated with oil. Smooth movement and accurate load positioning, which are critical factors for the workshop’s processes, are assured by the crane’s infinite and stepless speed control. Other features of the crane design are its tilted drum and offset reeving, which also ensure smooth and accurate load handling, whilst eliminating peak rope forces to reduce the wear on reeving components. The remote radio control allows the operator to use the crane from anywhere within the workshop for increased safety and operational freedom. The compact nature of the crane met ABB’s requirement for a heavy-duty lifting solution, which did not take up too much room in the workshop. Neil Rayns, ABB’s drives workshop engineer, reports that several lifting equipment providers were invited to tender for the project: “There were a number of options on the table, but the Konecranes’ proposal was the most appropriate for our requirements, representing the best engineered solution and value for money. Konecranes’ worldwide reputation for product quality, reliability and after sales support also gave us confidence that we were making the correct decision.” www.konecranes.co.uk

Multicar – Horizontal and Vertical Monorail Solution Multicar is an innovative monorail solution manufactured by Telelift Logistics in Munich and distributed in the UK by Quirepace.

M

ulticar is a network monorail system which can be configured to travel both horizontally and vertically (and at any gradient) throughout a building or facility. On this network autonomous “trolleys” can carry payloads up to 40kg from anywhere and to anywhere on the network. Each transaction can be initiated either through an HMI or via an interface with a SCADA, WMS or other external system. The throughput capability of the network is a factor of the track layout and the number of the trolleys. High throughputs can be obtained with trolleys operating in close sequence. Payloads are carried by a load handling device designed to suit the application. The load handling device usually keeps the payload horizontal throughout the transaction journey either through a gravitational pendulum effect, or through dynamic rotation by dedicated motor drive. The load handling device can be configured for automated load-unload if required and can, for example, interface with buffer roller conveyors for loading and offloading crates and cartons. Applications within industry are, for example, collecting output from manufacturing processes and delivering to storage and delivering components to the production line.

18|

Multicar is a very smooth transport and is ideally suited for sensitive payloads. A unique feature of the Multicar monorail system is the ability to operate on both horizontal and vertical track. This not only allows Multicar to service different levels and floors within a facility, but also allows payloads to be transported across a facility at high level, keeping production areas and accesses clear, and descending only within the vicinity of the point of use. Multicar is a mature product developed over more than 30 years of Electric Track vehicle systems and is a development of the lighter duty Unicar system (with maximum payload 15kg).

It has been proven in operation within automotive manufacturing (BMW, VW) and within the UK for specialised nuclear applications. The similar, but lighter, Unicar system has been chosen for the new Vaccines Manufacturing and Innovation Centre currently under construction at Harwell, Oxon. The Multicar standard specification provides for comprehensive inputs and outputs with external systems, including fire-door and fire-door control system which are part of the Telelift equipment. Everlube Coating Protects Neodymium Magnets

The new Everlube anti-corrosion magnet coating combats the increasingly arduous working environments for magnets and magnetic components. The Everlube coating prevents oxidation and deterioration of high-powered permanent neodymium rare earth magnets.

Bunting is one of the world’s leading designers and manufacturers of magnets, magnet assemblies, and magnetising equipment. The Bunting European engineering and manufacturing facilities are in Berkhamsted and Redditch, both in the United Kingdom. The Everlube coating was originally developed as a brand of dry film lubricant products specifically designed to enhance and improve the performance of critical components and meet a wide variety of industry, defence, and customer specifications for critical components. Manufactured by Curtiss Wright, the coatings are widely used by companies including Boeing, Airbus and NASA. Some permanent magnets, including neodymium, react negatively to exposure to water or humid conditions. In neodymium magnets, the neodymium-rich layers at the grain boundaries react to form neodymium hydroxide. The effect of this conversion from Nd to Nd(OH)3 is a large volume increase along the grain boundaries, leading to cracking and degradation of magnet properties. The speed of this is enhanced when salt is present. The Everlube coating prevents such degradation. The original Everlube coating was a thermoset coating, containing PTFE, molybdenum Di-Sulphide (MoS2) and phenolic resin adhesive. Everlube is an aluminised barrier coating specially formulated to maximize adhesion and corrosion protection when applied to rare earth magnets. The coating is very durable and provides excellent chemical and corrosion resistance to a wide range of substances including aviation fuel and anhydrous ethanol.

22|

Figure 1 (above)- Everlube coated Neodymium Magnet Ring Figure 2 (below) - Everlube coated Neodymium Magnet Rods

The application of an Everlube coating to a magnet surface is more complex than a NiCuNi coating or an Epoxy Coating or even a dual NiCu+Epoxy Coating. However, it has distinct advantages including significantly improved corrosion resistance, a much better range of chemical compatibility, and excellent quantified performance when exposed to salt spray in a minimum 500 hours test environment. The coating also provides a 4H coating hardness. Everlube coated neodymium magnets are ideally suited for high-performance applications in the automotive sector, especially for electric vehicles (e.g. motors), aerospace, and electronics. Free samples of new Everlube coated neodymium magnets are available on request (email Berkhamsted@BuntingMagnetics.com). “The working environments for magnets are getting increasingly tougher,” explained Matthew Swallow, Bunting’s Technical Product Manager. “The Everlube coating provides the necessary protection when using Neodymium, the highest strength of all permanent magnets, in very challenging environments and applications.” Bunting-Berkhamsted – www.buntingeurope.com

The Camtorc Actuator: A Short Case Study An Optimised Design for Valve Actuators The Camtorc series actuator is a mathematically derived cam system first manufactured in 1975. It has been in continuous production since, gaining a base in industries all over the world. Imtex Controls acquired all rights to the design in 2006 and integrated it into a modular assembly that is particularly suited to space-sensitive or remote/inaccessible locations. The unique Camtorc design has many advantages over other actuator systems, and it is important for end users and buyers to be aware of these differences. This case study will explain the advantages of Camtorc, outline the modular components, compare Camtorc to other actuator systems, and also demonstrate how fail-safe valves, or applications where Maximum Allowable Stem Torque (MAST) is a concern, will benefit from improved torque-efficiency and a reduced risk of valve failure. Finally, there is discussion of how Camtorc can prevent spurious trips and false alarms on assemblies where valve testing, especially Partial Stroke Testing (PST), is in use.

Advantages of the Camtorc Actuator The Camtorc actuator is a linear to rotary motion convertor primarily used for the pneumatic or hydraulic actuation of quarterturn pipeline valves and dampers. Consequently, the design has seen a big uptake in the oil/gas, marine and power generation industries. What really sets this design apart is the mathematical profile of the cam which ensures a constant output torque during the piston stroke. This eliminates backlash. The combination of zero backlash and constant output torque means

24|

Other Valves that Benefit from a Camtorc Actuator there are fewer moving parts – reducing possible causes to fail, which contributes to a longer service life and lower maintenance costs. Additionally, this optimised system also avoids two more, related problems. Firstly, the constant torque negates large side-forces which require additional infrastructure within the housing. This in turn avoids the problem of side-loads, which require more complex assemblies. As a result, Camtorc actuators are more compact and generally have lower installation costs.

Camtorc offers significant safety benefits for certain types of applications listed below: • Modulating Valves: zerobacklash and high run torques make Camtorc very suitable to modulating valves. • High Cycling Valves: The simple mechanism and lack of side-forces means Camtorc is not prone to excessive wear and will run for extended periods on high cycling valves. Camtorc has been tested in excess of 1 million operations (Third Party verified to 0.5 million operations by CEGB in the UK).

The Camtorc Actuator Outperforms Other Systems

• Remote Valves: The lack of sideforces increases the intervals between service maintenance making Camtorc particularly suited to remote and inaccessible valves.

Compared to other actuator systems, such as the scotch yoke design, Camtorc offers substantial advantages. The scotch yoke actuator employs a piston that moves a yoke via a sliding pin. It is easiest to think of Camtorc as an optimised version of this design, clamping the yoke apparatus (attached to the pistons) around the cam so they remain in contact along a frictionless surface. Performance differences between the two actuator designs are summarised in the table (top right).

• Space Sensitive Applications: The compact design makes Camtorc the obvious choice where space is a limiting factor (on Offshore rigs for example). • Valves Required to Fail-Open: Extra torque generated on the spring stroke allows for smaller Camtorc models to be fitted on fail-open valves. Typically, Camtorc actuators fitted to fail-open valves are a third smaller than the equivalent scotch yoke.

ENGINEERING PDATE February 2021

Summary For the buyer, all of the design benefits of the Camtorc actuator system result in a significantly reduced Whole Life Cost (Whole Life Cost is the projected cost of an asset over its entire life). Overall, companies that choose Camtorc benefit from:

Valves Fitted with Testing Apparatus (i.e. Partial Stroke Test) On safety critical valves (i.e. ESDVs) it is increasingly common to carry out some form of valve assembly testing, such as Partial Stroke Testing (PST). The advantages for plants and rigs are that critical valves are tested for integrity without the cost burden of shutting off the valve. There are two distinct advantages to the Camtorc design when it comes to PST: •

In the dual pistondesign of the Spring Module less air needs to leave the actuator to start the piston moving, and a much larger pressure drop is required to complete the stroke. This significantly decreases the risk of overtravel (spurious trips).

To prevent over-travel a maximum pressure drop is often set, but on a scotch valve actuator this is usually very close to the pressure required to start moving the valve. Therefore, if the valve sticks a little (which often happens when a valve has been inactive) the test might fail erroneously: since a slightly

lower pressure would cause the valve to move. With Camtorc, the larger pressure differential on the spring stroke allows for much more control of the PST system, and the maximum permissible pressure drop is far less likely to abort the test. False fails and spurious trips are costly and risky on a plant or oil rig where they might lead to a partial or complete shutdown of operations.

Lower installation costs

Lower maintenance costs

Improved safety (and reassurance where MAST is a design criteria)

A longer service life (particularly important in aggressive environments)

Significantly lower risk of both spurious trips and false-fails during PST

Reduced Whole Life Cost

The Camtorc series is available for pneumatic and hydraulic applications in either double acting or spring return configurations with a full range of modular control accessories. Please contact Imtex Controls on +44 (0)8700 340 002 or email sales@imtex-controls.com for more information.

Encoders are indispensable wherever precise measurement and supervision of speed, direction of travel, distance travelled, and position of mechanical elements or number of rotations performed is necessary. In any case, the encoder invariably affects the proper and efficient functioning of machines and systems. It is therefore a small investment in great profits of enterprises. British Encoder Products (BEPC) is the European branch of the Encoder Products Group, a worldwide manufacturer of motion sensing and control devices. As a customer driven company, BEPC is highly responsive in the areas of customer service and technical support, with an acute focus on high performance, excellent delivery and competitive pricing. Encoder Products Company Inc. (EPC), a leading designer and worldwide manufacturer was founded in 1969, beginning operations with a small line of custom encoders (the original Cube series!). Today, 50 years later, EPC manufactures the most complete line of incremental and absolute shaft encoders in the industry, meeting the diverse needs of a wide range of global customers. BEPC offers two major types of encoders, linear measurement encoders, as the TR1 Tru-Trac™ or New Draw Wire Encoder (LCX), and rotary encoders like the Model A58HE which is an EtherCAT or PROFINETready. Linear encoders have a read head and track. The read head will slide along the track with a predetermined scale. This will produce an output for distance travelled typically in pulses per inch (PPI). A rotary encoder converts the angular movement of a rotational device and will have an output for rotation about the fixed axis typically in pulses per revolution (PPR). Within linear or rotary encoders there are two basic types of electrical output formats; incremental or absolute. Absolute encoders have a unique digitally coded output or address for every distinct position of the encoder. Incremental encoders will output a count or pulse at periodic predetermined intervals. Rotary incremental encoders are the most used encoders.

28|

BEPC encoders are increasingly becoming the basic elements of automation systems in industries as: • • • •

Machine building Robotics Automation and sorting Aerospace

• • • •

Food & Beverage Printing Material Handling Mobile equipment, etc.

Performance boost of Speedy laser machines Retaining the proven and equipping with innovation The laser engravers Speedy 100 and Speedy 300 have been further developed. The ultimate goal was to make laser users’ work simpler, faster and more profitable by setting new standards again.

Laser engraving at highest quality The newly developed Ceramicore laser source for Speedy 100 and Speedy 300 enables laser engraving of finest structures, lines and characters thanks to a very small beam diameter. In addition a homogenous engraving appearance over the complete working area is guaranteed. This technology was already standard for higher laser power and is now available also for 30 watts. The patented laser source concept represents reliability, high

engraving quality and longevity. The resonator body where the laser radiation is generated is made of 100% ceramic.

Valuable time savings in laser file preparation OptiMotion™- now also available for Speedy 100 and Speedy 300 - automatically searches for optimal speed parameters. In other words: The operator only needs to determine the power and speed required to cut through the material or to vector engrave - regardless of the cutting geometry. When processing the job, OptiMotion™ adjusts the speed and acceleration in real time depending on the geometry. For the operator, valuable time can be saved in laser file preparation. In addition OptiMotion™ boosts productivity: Maximum cutting speed at highest cutting quality is guaranteed.

Increased Safety In principle, all Trotec laser machines are CE-compliant and thus meet the essential safety and health requirements of the EC Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC. In addition Trotec develops machine-specific safety and protection devices, which make our lasers one of the safest in their class all over the world: The key switch and emergency button on the new Speedy 100 and Speedy 300 moved now next to the keypad, so that the laser process can be stopped immediately in dangerous situations. Moreover a new uniform keypad was implemented with an intuitive arrangement of the symbols including haptic elements for blind operation.

Increased comfort The newly integrated LED lighting provides a uniform illumination of the working area. This improves comfort for the user and also allows quicker setting of engraving and cutting jobs. Maintaining heating systems at optimum performance The series of Covid-19 restrictions have led to periodic closures of industrial and commercial premises. While many businesses throughout the UK have shown themselves remarkably resilient, the disruption caused by the pandemic emergency has been intense and widespread. Safeguarding the employment of the workforce and ensuring business activities can resume whenever possible are major priorities. However, companies also have had to ensure that their building services are well maintained and functioning safely and efficiently. Gas-fired heating systems are widely used in factories, warehouses and a range of other large space interior settings. They are complex and sophisticated installations that require the highest standards of servicing and maintenance on a regular basis.

Safety and efficiency The requirement to ensure the safe operation of large space gas heating systems is covered by the Gas Safety

30|

(Installation and Use) Regulations. On the subject of maintenance of gas appliances in industrial or commercial working environments, the regulations states that: "It shall be the duty of every employer or selfemployed person to ensure that any gas appliance, installation pipework or flue installed at any place of work under [their] control is maintained in a safe condition so as to prevent risk of injury to any person." Safety is not the only issue of course. Regular servicing and maintenance will also ensure that a heating system will provide optimum levels of performance and energy efficiency. This means that energy usage can be reduced, thus saving on operating costs and also lessening the carbon footprint of the building in question.

Remote connection means that all system programs and operating parameters can be viewed or set remotely

HRS offers remote equipment monitoring The Coronavirus pandemic has highlighted the benefits of working remotely utilising new and existing technologies to monitor and manage operations from a distance, whether a few meters away on the factory floor, or on the other side of the world. While many forward-thinking businesses had already embraced the concepts behind remote working, the Internet of Things (IoT) and Industry 4.0, there is no doubt that Covid-19 has increased the speed of uptake in many sectors and shown the real benefits of this way of working to the most sceptical of observers. One feature which is increasingly being specified on HRS systems (such as pasteurisers, sterilisers, fillers and food processing systems) is the fitment of remote monitoring and telemetry systems.

These are normally based on an ethernet connection, but where the necessary infrastructure is not available, an integrated data SIM can be used instead. This allows clients to easily manage, operate and analyse equipment performance within their own business, something which is particularly useful for larger companies operating over multiple sites or even across different countries. Another benefit is that HRS engineering staff can easily access the system remotely for troubleshooting or to allow the

installation of software upgrades for example. Matt Hale, International Sales & Marketing Director at HRS Heat Exchangers, comments: “This remote functionality has been available for some time, but it is noticeable since the start of the Coronavirus pandemic how much more popular remote monitoring and operation has become. Our clients can be assured that we are able to meet their requirements in terms of remotely connecting to our heat exchangers and other systems.”

good starting point is having standardized meters. These will ensure consistent data collection that can feed into a central platform for end-to-end visibility and accurate analysis. Ideally, the platform should be capable of automatic data capture, in real time, regardless of utility source or data. If meters are unavailable in certain areas (or not all of the same type) understanding how much energy is being used, by what and when, will be far more difficult than it needs to be. Industrial energy management is about efficient energy monitoring and reallocating resource at the right time to support production initiatives. Implementing an Energy Management System (EMS) will streamline data integration and reporting, allowing business units and functions to be compared in context, as well as providing the means to compile

38|

accurate data. The EMS can also correct issues, identify patterns and address anomalies.

the EMS without issue, and support corporate sustainability goals.

With data standardized and an EMS in place, you now have a complete overview of energy consumption and can devise realistic energy targets and a strategy to achieve them. Targets can be set in the EMS based on aggregated data (ensuring no skewed reporting), meaning everyone in the business can see the progress towards the goals. It’ll also be far more consistent and less error-prone than manual reporting.

Energy Management System will help to reduce operational costs and improve performance. As critical components in the production lifecycle are further bolstered by resource from non-essential plant functions, it becomes possible for Engineering Managers to balance conflicting priorities: deal with industrial energy management and get the product out the door.

New reporting and data visibility will lay the groundwork for a successful change management program and ensure continuous improvement. Employees at all levels will understand the energy key performance indicators (KPIs) and can access the detailed data they need to report on energy saving targets, address problems, use

In both the short and long-term, the

Universal vandal-resistant switches by SCHURTER A new dimension of “durability”.

Where are vandalresistant switches used?

What are the types of vandal-resistant switches?

Today, we encounter electronic devices not only at home and at work, but also in public spaces. At this stage of the technological revolution, there is a need to use exceptionally durable and weather-resistant user interface elements. The simplest of these elements is an ordinary button – the one we find on a bus, train, car park gate, lift, ATM or at a pedestrian crossing. These buttons, called vandal-resistant because of their universality, seem to be something trivial. Nevertheless, they are a result of years of experimentation, precision engineering and specialised production technologies.

A classic solution among vandalresistant switches are push button switches, i.e. specially designed mechanical switches. They are mainly applied in closed spaces, in areas with heavy traffic. Their construction is based on a microswitch enclosed in a tight housing, resistant to “nonsensitive” use. Thanks to such a design, this component can be successfully connected to a circuit that is adapted to ordinary switches (which is important e.g. when using standardized modules). These products are usually galvanised, made of acid-resistant steel or aluminium, which prevents corrosion and makes it easier to keep them clean and regularly disinfected. Some models have a built-in LED, i.e. the backlighting or illumination of the button, which can also serve an informative function (for example, a flashing light that signals the movement of the lift or confirms pressing). All these features can also be found in other types of vandalresistant switches.

1241.2434.8 - An example of a vandalresistant, piezoelectric switch with IP67 rating by SCHURTER

SCHURTER is a Swiss manufacturer specializing in electrical and electronic circuit protection components. Apart from fuses, suppression filters or power connectors, the company also offers a selection of vandal-resistant switches for various applications. Their manufacturer, a global leader in its field, makes every effort to ensure that products labelled with the SCHURTER logo meet the most demanding (international and industrial) standards and are durable and reliable.

44|

Piezoelectric switches have no moving parts. After touching the button surface, an electrical impulse is transmitted to the circuit. These are durable components with the additional advantage of sparkle-free design. Thanks to their characteristics, they can be applied in damp interiors (e.g. shower cubicles), as well as in rooms where flammable substances are stored. They are also used in outdoor applications, which is why SCHURTER are manufactured to meet the IP67 rating. As they can handle currents of up to 1A, these switches are usually used in control circuits.

3-101-403 - RBG backlit capacitive switch by SCHURTER

The last type of vandal-resistant switches are capacitive switches. They operate on the same principle as capacitive touch sensors fitted e.g. in smartphone screens. They are characterized by exceptional sensitivity and durability. This category also includes cutting-edge solutions by SCHURTER, such as RGB LED illumination or backlight. The full range of colours can be used as a signalling component or serve an aesthetic function.

Which properties of the switch should be taken into account? Choosing the right switch will depend on a number of factors. Depending on the application, the designer may need a specific contact configuration, button design or number of stable positions (1 or 2). That is why our catalogue includes buttons with DPDT, DPST, SPDT, as well as SPST (also in NO versions) configurations; concave and convex components equipped with seals etc. Perhaps the most important feature of the elements presented here is their manufacturer. Thanks to its many years of experience and care for the quality and durability of its products, SCHURTER deserves the title of one of the world leaders in the production of vandal-proof buttons. That is why we recommend exploring the solutions by this manufacturer – which are available directly from our warehouses.

The Future of Stationary Energy Storage is Led by Policy and Renewables, Reports IDTechEx

E

lectricity generation from renewable energies is growing on a daily basis and, to integrate their variable nature, energy storage systems are growing in parallel. IDTechEx have investigated the evolution of the energy storage market, forecasting its growth in the next ten years, in the new report: “Batteries for Stationary Energy Storage 2021-2031”.

The report “Batteries for Stationary Energy Storage 2021-2031” aims to provide the reader with a clear picture of the current status of the development of these two branches in the main countries currently adopting battery storage systems.

The evolving energy storage market is separated into two branches, Front-of-Meter (FTM) and Behind-the-Meter (BTM). The FTM sector is related to the operation of the electricity infrastructure; therefore, batteries are employed to maintain a smooth and continuous flow of electricity to the consumers. The BTM market instead is the customer side of the market; hence batteries are used by consumers to decrease electricity costs mainly.

The future adoption of green policies will drive the adoption of renewable energies in both segments of the market, although other parameters like grid infrastructure and the energy sources adopted by countries (e.g. nuclear, coal, and lignite power plant) will play an important role in the adoption of energy storage systems.

The services provided by the batteries are similar most of the time, although on a different scale.

IDTechEx’s forecasted battery installation breakdown by application. Source: IDTechEx, “Batteries for Stationary Energy Storage 20212031”.

To better understand the future evolution of the energy storage market, IDTechEx performed an in-depth analysis of the main countries adopting energy storage systems (including the U.S., China, Japan, Australia, Germany, and others), investigating the latest policies in terms of renewable energy and energy storage, as well as interviewing leader companies in the field of energy storage, to understand the market approach and the possible effect of COVID-19. The result of this analysis shows a similar but different scenario among the investigated countries. The renewable energy target, with the current status of the grid infrastructure, in consideration of the different types of energy sources adopted by the country, defined a specific scenario for every country. As well as the differences, a clear point has been identified: the stationary storage market is only in its early stages, from both technical and policy aspects. Simple Zoom Lens for use in Remote or Hazardous Environments For remote and hazardous environments where simple optical design offers significant benefits - Resolve Optics has developed a new optically compensated zoom lens design that vastly reduces the moving parts to just a single push pull movement. One of the biggest advantages of using a zoom lens is that it allows you to change focal lengths without changing your lens. A zoom lens also provides a range of variable focal lengths which can be adjusted using the zoom ring on the lens. Because of this inbuilt versatility – zoom lenses are complex with lots of close tolerance components sliding and rotating within each other. This is fine under normal conditions, but at extremely low and high temperatures or in the vacuum of space producing these movements presents a challenge.

He added "We are looking for partners to ‘road-test’ our new optically compensated zoom lens over the coming months. Organisations wishing to learn more about the optically corrected zoom lens should send us details of their target application via our online form at https://www.resolveoptics.com/request-form-1/

Mark Pontin, Managing Director of Resolve Optics commented "In our new zoom lens design there are two groups of optical elements that move together in relation to a middle group. The movement is linear so there is no requirement for complex cam profiles. Our optically compensated 4x zoom lens beneficially also maintains focus and resolution throughout its zoom range".

Extended Range Non-Browning Zoom Lens Based upon a proven design – Resolve Optics new Model 192-001 non-browning 6x zoom lens offers high performance over an extended 24-144mm focal length range making it perfect for remote monitoring tasks in nuclear reprocessing and power plants. The compact lens’s speciality glass components can withstand long-term exposure to radiation, up to a dose of 100 million RAD and without loss of transmission and minimal colour change. Operating at f/3.6, the Model 192-001 provides good image resolution and minimum geometric distortion from 400 to 750 nm. When focused at infinity, the Model 192-001 will maintain focus throughout the zoom range without the need to refocus.

Available in 1/2-inch and 2/3-inch image formats the C-mounted Model 192-001 can be simply mounted on Newvicon tubes, Chalnicon tubes and CCD devices. For further information on the Model 192-001 nonbrowning 6x zoom lens please visit: www.resolveoptics.com/192-001-24-144mm-f3-6-61range-extended-non-browning-zoom-lens-2/ or contact Resolve Optics on +44-1494-777100 / sales@resolveoptics.com. Nuclear industry applications require lenses and optical systems that can withstand exposure to high levels of radiation and sometimes endure extreme temperatures. Resolve Optics has considerable experience of developing lenses and optical systems for applications in hazardous or difficult to access industrial environments. The Resolve Optics team has worked with leading companies in the nuclear industry to provide radiation-resistant, high performance solutions including non-browning lenses (fixed focus and zoom), through-wall endoscopes as well as vision and remote inspection camera systems.

Tests demonstrate corrosion protection of SuperCORR spray on unpainted metal in highly corrosive environments

These are photographs of 3 unpainted copper components that were exposed for a month next to the "digester" at a Pulp and Paper Mill. The part marked #1 was the control and not sprayed with SuperCORR A corrosion protection spray. Half of part marked #2 was sprayed with SuperCORR A and half left uncoated. Component #3 was completely treated with SuperCORR A. The main atmospheric corrosion was from hydrogen sulphide (H2S) gas, produced during the cellulose digestion process, which combines with the atmospheric humidity to form a mild acid. Any unpainted or untreated metal surface, copper, brass, mild steel or alloys of zinc and manganese or magnesium will be corroded by this acid when it condenses on the metal surfaces. This is especially important in electrical motors and power control systems where these metals are used as conductors or switch contacts on printed circuit tracks and all types of connectors which although sealed in control panels will be exposed whenever the boxes are opened or contactors operated and connectors plugged and unplugged. In most cases it is not possible to paint these conductive surfaces or apply other forms of protection without loss of conductivity leading to arcing or supply failures.

50|

These tests demonstrate the amazing properties of SuperCORR A to protect unpainted surfaces from acidic corrosion. As an example, copper and aluminium condensers on water coolers usually last about a month in the acidic environment of pulp production facilities because the corrosive atmosphere around the plant corrodes the metal surfaces on fins and connections. A trial was set up by the works engineering department at the plant who sprayed a new condenser with an aerosol of SuperCORR A. This applies a very thin protective film of a proprietary formulation containing extremely long-lasting anticorrosion inhibitors, which also give superior lubrication coefficients and protect components against moisture. This unique, water displacing lubricant, with synthetic corrosion prevention compounds is tested and proven non-flammable and environmentally friendly without sulphates, chlorides, or other halogens.

After a few months the treated condenser showed so little signs of corrosion that further controlled trials were set up to test for long term protection of untreated metal in this extremely corrosive environment experienced in paper and pulp mills, water processing plants and oil drilling rigs. The improvement is clear and demonstrates the savings in costs of parts and labour for maintenance and replacement untreated metal components exposed to these corrosive conditions. THE IMAGING SOURCE - Embedded Vision Camera Modules In order to efficiently access the performance features of the NVIDIA and Raspberry Pi 4 platforms for embedded vision applications, ALRAD offers The Imaging Source portfolio of MIPI CSI-2 board cameras. Many embedded machine vision applications (especially multi-camera applications) require cable lengths longer than the maximum 20 cm reached with MIPI CSI-2 cameras. Using the FPD-Link III bridge, cable lengths of up to 15m can be achieved. Image data is transmitted via a thin (Ø 2.8 mm) coaxial cable at up to 4.16 Gbps, with image data, control commands and power supply being transmitted simultaneously. The bandwidth is sufficient, for example, for the transfer of image data from a 5-MP camera at 30 frames/s. Developers can choose between MIPI-CSI-2 and FPDLink-III board cameras as well as FPD-Link-III cameras with IP67-rated housing. The compact cameras are available as monochrome and colour versions with the latest CMOS image sensors from Sony and On Semiconductor (global shutter and rolling shutter with resolutions from 0.3 MP [VGA] - 8.3 MP).

The Imaging Source provides MIPI CSI-2 and FPDLink-III camera carrier boards with up to 6 camera inputs (platform dependent) for connecting the board cameras to the NVIDIA™ Jetson Nano®, Xavier NX, AGX Xavier and Raspberry Pi 4. Some users might be left wondering what the reasons are for using MIPI CSI2 or FPD-Link-III cameras instead of USB-3 or GigE cameras. The answer lies in the hardware features of the embedded platforms themselves, namely the hardware-accelerated image signal processor (ISP). The embedded platforms’ MIPI-CSI-2 interfaces are directly connected to the ISP to avoid latencies and data conversions. The Imaging Source’s MIPI-CSI-2 cameras have been specifically designed to pass the raw image data directly to the interface. Since these embedded board cameras include only essential functionality, they are particularly cost effective. The ISP handles hardware-accelerated operations such as removing bayer effect, colour correction, colour space conversion, white balance, lens correction and image data compression (e.g. H.264/H.256).

For challenging environments Alrad also offer the IP65 rated housed versions of the embedded FPD III link camera Carrier board with six FPD Link III camera modules using the Jetson AGX Xavier.

thernet switches build a network connection, allowing

devices to talk to each other. Switches are essential tools in the networking structure; enabling swift and efficient delivery of data packets between devices, whether they’re at opposite ends of a factory or on different sides of the world. Unlike Ethernet hubs that transmit incoming data packets to all ports, unmanaged Ethernet switches are able to work within addressing schemes and limit data collisions by only sending specific data packets to their destination ports. Unmanaged switches automatically detect the network speed of each device, identifying and remembering network devices through the MAC Address function. This intelligence allows the switch to sort all messages by their specific identification code and send to the correct port, vastly improving transmission performance. • Establish network connections between multiple devices • Traffic between connected devices won’t interfere with other devices on the same network • Control and monitor access to various parts of the network • Allow usage monitoring • High speed communication within your network

Fast Ethernet Switches Fast Ethernet enhances the speed of Ethernet with a transfer rate from 10 Megabits per second (10 Mbps) to 100 Megabits per second (100 Mbps). The industry standard for Ethernet Switches is the RJ45 port also known as a network port. With 8 positions and 8 conductors (or contacts) formed into 4 twisted pairs; a type of wiring that twists two conductors of a single circuit together to improve electromagnetic compatibility, the Fast Ethernet switch works over Cat5 cables to connect devices.

Discover Industrial Ethernet Switches Whilst Gigabit switches offer obvious advantages of speed and performance; not every application requires that speed. In automation and monitoring projects that don’t require Gigabit speeds, such as train ticketing machines, lighting controls, and control panel expansions, Fast Ethernet switches offer reliable remote functionality and can reduce the number of service call outs.

Backwards compatible; Gigabit switches can plug into older networks, and are able to connect to devices that are 10Mbs, Fast Ethernet (100Mbs) or Gigabit, whilst detecting the highest common speed between both ends of the connection.

Product Spotlight: Fast Ethernet

Brainboxes SW-515 Compact Industrial 5 Port Gigabit Ethernet Switch

Brainboxes SW-005 10/100 5 Port Light Industrial Ethernet Switch One of the biggest names in the UK for electric vehicle charging solutions; BP Chargemaster utilise Brainboxes SW-005 Fast Ethernet switches in their Ultracharge 5kW free standing chargers. The data transfer rate afforded by 10/100 Ethernet is sufficient for purpose, and the compact design of the Ethernet switches means they integrate neatly into the innovatively designed rapid vehicle chargers.

Gigabit Ethernet Switches With data transmission at 1000Mbs per second; the Gigabit standard provides simultaneous sending and receiving of data at a speed 10 times faster than Fast Ethernet (100Mbs). Designed for network intensive applications where rapid data transmission is key, Gigabit Ethernet switches boast increased speed, efficiency and performance, making it easier to configure and support highspeed data transfer between devices and/or the central controls.

Product Spotlight: Industrial Gigabit Ethernet Switch

Designed to withstand extreme conditions, industrial Ethernet switches have a more rugged spec than commercial switches. Industrial power considerations and a wide operating temperature range make industrial switches suitable for a multitude of environments including factories, HVAC, oil and gas fields, military applications, and security/surveillance control. The Gigabit standard is targeted for mission-critical applications where speed is essential, without compromising on reliability, quality, or safety. Recognised throughout the world as a leading Designer and Manufacturer of intrinsically safe and explosion proof equipment, Don Electronics use Brainboxes industrial Gigabit Ethernet switches in bespoke hazard monitoring systems. Used in Zone 21 approved systems (flammable or explosive areas) for critical safety monitoring, the switches are rugged and reliable enough to detect particles in mines, and withstand cement dust in construction.

ENGINEERING UPDATE

Make 2021 the year of reshoring urges Birmingham manufacturing chief The boss of a Birmingham-based stamping specialist is urging UK companies to make the most of a growing desire to reshore.

R

owan Crozier, CEO of Brandauer, believes manufacturers have a once in a generation chance to reclaim some of the work that emigrated to low-cost countries during the early 90s and throughout the 2000s. A lot of major OEMs have been stung by extended supply chains with Covid-19 interruptions creating a ripple effect of production stoppages and cost penalties from not getting product out the door and to market quick enough. The former engineering graduate, who has led the company to a Queen’s Award for International Trade, insists companies, based in the UK and EU, will be more reluctant to place all their work in far-away, lower cost economies, where they could be subject to higher tariffs, quota restrictions and shipping delays. A reduction in capacity - causing longer raw material lead times from the EU and Asia – will also exacerbate this, as will consumer demand for UK-made products that are more sustainable and friendly to the environment. There is also a recognition for what the UK is known for, including innovation, science and outstanding research and development. “This isn’t going to be easy to take advantage of, quite the opposite. However, it is definitely something that manufacturers should be exploring, and Government should be actively backing, whether that is through tailored support, incentives to bring work home or financial support for companies wishing to embark on these types of projects,” explained Rowan, who is also Vice Chair of Make UK’s West Midlands Advisory Board. “We have been very proactive in targeting new opportunities and this approach is already reaping dividends with contracts in the EU zone secured in construction and medical sectors, with our engineers also currently looking at new opportunities with North American customers in automotive electrification, pharma and renewables.” He continued: “Naturally, when changing the source of supply, it comes with risk. New terms, new relationships,

possible R&D investment to make it work and above all will the new supplier live up to its promises and deliver? “This is where due diligence comes into play and a clear cost/risk benefit analysis must be used to determine whether the advantages of reshoring outweigh the issues of leaving your components where they are.” Brandauer has embedded standard processes around existing tool transfers and new product introductions that are proven to recognise and manage the risks and provide potential new clients with a clear path to successfully reshore their critical components. Managing long supply chains to the benefit of its customers is something else it has honed to the changing needs of the 22 countries it currently supplies into. An example of this is having multiple options to purchase non-functional elements of tooling and jigging and/or raw material and bespoke processing equipment on behalf of customers and moving it to the UK. This means the firm is taking a significant proportion of the risk and headaches on their behalf. Rowan concluded: “In the UK, we are sometimes a little guilty of underselling our strengths, values and capabilities in manufacturing, but with all that is going on in the world, now is not the time to ignore the first signs of a reshoring trend. “Instead, we need to get behind it, promote it, explore where we can deliver new competitive advantage and make it happen. Could 2021 be the year of reshoring…why not?” For further information, please visit www.branduer.co.uk or follow @cbrandauer on twitter

Smarter Social Distancing: Casella Launches Orbi-Trace Smart-Tag to Support Workplace Social Distancing

Workers and businesses have never been more aware of the need for positive occupational hygiene culture than they are as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic. The challenge industry now faces in reopening is balancing worker health, the concerns of employee and legal and legislative responsibility around operating a ‘Covid secure’ workplace. Casella, expert manufacturer of smart monitoring technology, has developed an innovative, technologyforward solution to simplify social distancing in the workplace with the launch of the Orbi-Trace smart tag – a flexible social distancing solution that provides simple proximity alerts all the way up to full effective contact tracing. The body-worn Orbi-Trace smart tag is simple to operate, with a stop/start input and single LED power alert. It gives the wearer fully configurable vibration and audible alerts whenever a 2m safe distance is breached, and can operate indoors and out, with a battery life of up to seven days. The sophisticated Ultra-wideband (UWB) connectivity is accurate in detecting distances down to

10cm accuracy – making it 20 x more accurate than Bluetooth. The connectivity will not cause interference with WIFI or other RF technologies. When combined with the wallmounted anchor unit and proprietary, free to use Infection Insights software, the Orbi-Trace can be used to generate connection graphs and risk and contact assessments, should an employee test positive for Covid-19. Adding additional anchor units to

the system expands this to full realtime contract tracking, giving users access to heat-maps of areas where social-distancing may be consistently challenging and a full contract tracing history, making enforcing controls much more straightforward. For those mediating employee privacy concerns, the Orbi-Trace system is also fully GDPR compliant. “The Covid-19 pandemic has been a challenging time for everyone on a business and personal level. But where there are challenges, there are inevitable solutions,” says Tim Turney, Casella Global Marketing Manager. “Businesses have proved their resilience and adaptability in getting staff safely back to work through the Pandemic, and now as those businesses look towards the future with a large-scale return to work, we are here to support them.” “The Orbi-Trace smart tag is a combined solution to the challenges employees and employees alike face in ensuring a Covid-secure, compliant workplace; maintaining social distancing, enforcing the correct control measures, contact tracing where needed and, most importantly, giving workers and workplaces vital peace of mind that their safety is top priority.”

Pitch drive controllers from KEB play a central safety role in wind turbines KEB Automation is seeing an increase in demand for its drive controllers, motors and brakes for onshore and offshore wind turbines. Pitch and yaw drives, pitch motors, as well as pitch and yaw brakes from KEB, are proving popular as a central safety component in wind turbines, including the latest high power (10MW and above) turbines. "The trend is clearly towards ever larger, more powerful wind turbines," says Sebastian Eicke, applications engineer in the wind energy team at KEB Automation. "This is closely linked to the repowering of existing plants and the expansion of offshore wind farms." The manufacturers of wind turbines have special requirements that must be met. "In the wind sector, robustness plays an important role, as do long maintenance intervals, because the turbines are exposed to a wide variety of environmental conditions," explains Roger Brohl, product manager for the wind sector at KEB Automation. "From very cold to very warm, with high vibrations in the nacelle, which means drives and brakes have to withstand everything." Brohl continues: "The keyword here is safety. The pitch drives are a central safety component of the wind turbine. In the event of a power failure, a storm or a fault, they must ensure that the turbine blades reach a safe position – the so-called vane position." "In the Chinese market, we can probably call ourselves, without false modesty, one of the market leaders in pitch inverters," says Eicke. "For example, the new COMBIVERT 23P6 pitch inverter from KEB is particularly well suited to large wind turbines of around 10MW and above. The pitch drives are also joined by yaw drives for aligning the turbine in the direction of the wind – so-called wind tracking. The system can be completed with the use of KEB brakes and motors. The COMBISTOP range of spring-applied brakes, for example, are specially optimised for use in wind turbines, enabling universal installation on synchronous or asynchronous motors, for onshore, nearshore or offshore wind turbines."

Pitch drive controllers Specially developed for use in electrical pitch systems, the COMBIVERT P6 meets all the requirements for rotary use in the hub of wind power facilities with the

64|

prevailing local vibration and temperature loads. In active operation, the electrical system output and speed of the hub are controlled by the rotor blade position. In case of failure of the turbine itself or in the supply network, the pitch inverter fulfils the task of protecting the wind power facility against dangerous overspeeds or brings it to a halt by fast turning of the rotor blades away from the wind.

Pitch motors The KEB Pitch Motor is specially designed to withstand these harsh environmental conditions and is based on the knowledge and experience gained from more than 10 years’ practical application 10,000plus installations. The KEB Pitch Motor is a synchronous servomotor with integral spring pressure. The Pitch Motor stands out due to its high efficiency, compactness and low weight. The motor is easily adapted to existing gearboxes by using different flange configurations. KEB Pitch Motors also meet the very highest requirements in terms of quality, dynamics and positioning accuracy.

Pitch and yaw brakes COMBISTOP spring-applied brakes from KEB are specially designed for use in wind turbines, enabling universal installation (onshore, nearshore and offshore) as addons for synchronous and asynchronous motors. The brakes are protected from corrosion, high vibration and impact and are configured for 100% power-ontime. The brakes are easy to install and are failsafe through the use of special continuous stroke-safe springs.

Yaw drive controllers Wind turbines with increasingly large rotors and tower heights are being built in the landscape. As the size and capacity increase, so do the requirements for drive controllers used to regulate and control them – in both the hub and the nacelle. Yaw drive controllers handle ‘yawing’ and are a key component for maximising turbine availability. In the offshore sector, minimising maintenance with maximum failsafe performance are key criteria. KEB offers variants from industrial use for azimuth applications using COMBIVERT drive controllers.

Remote maintenance COMBIVIS Connect software from KEB offers a VPN-based connection platform that provides reliable, secure access from anywhere in the world. The properties and possibilities of remote maintenance are directly integrated in many KEB control products. If third-party control systems are used in the wind power facility, the COMBICONTROL C6 router from KEB offers a universal solution for incorporating these components. Software drivers are currently available for more than 50 different manufacturers. The C6 router can also be equipped with the COMBIVIS HMI visualisation system. Renishaw launches the FORTiS™ range of nextgeneration enclosed linear absolute encoders Renishaw, the global metrology specialist, launches the innovative FORTiS enclosed linear absolute encoder series, for use in harsh environments such as machine tools. The FORTiS design is built upon industry-proven RESOLUTE™ encoder technology and provides high resistance to the ingress of liquids and solid debris contaminants. It features an extruded enclosure with longitudinally attached interlocking lip seals and sealed end caps. The readhead body is joined to a sealed optical unit by a blade, which travels through the lip seals along the length of the encoder. Linear axis movement causes the readhead and optics to traverse the encoder’s absolute scale (which is fixed to the inside of the enclosure), without mechanical contact. Customers can choose from two different extrusion profiles to suit their space requirements. The FORTiS-S™ linear encoder is the standard-sized encoder, available with measuring lengths from 140 mm to 3040 mm and is installed directly to a machined surface via flexure holes in the extrusion’s body. The FORTiS-N™ encoder, available with measuring lengths from 70 mm to 2040 mm, features a narrower cross-section extrusion and a more compact readhead to enable installations in confined spaces. This model can be mounted directly to a machined surface via two end cap mounting holes or a mounting spar for greater rigidity. Ian Eldred, FORTiS Principal Mechanical Engineer at Renishaw, highlights a range of unique and ground-breaking design features: “The new FORTiS enclosed absolute encoder range is the culmination of years of R&D effort at Renishaw. It delivers superior repeatability, reduced hysteresis and improved measurement performance due to an innovative non-contact mechanical design that doesn’t require a mechanical guidance carriage. Five years of accelerated life testing, under the harshest conditions, has enabled Renishaw to develop and refine the new advanced DuraSeal™ lip seals.

These offer excellent resistance to wear and machine tool lubricants, superior sealing and ingress protection up to IP64 when combined with air purge.” He continues, “FORTiS absolute encoders also feature integrated, specially-designed tuned mass dampers that deliver class-leading 30 g vibration resistance and push the limits of what enclosed encoders can endure. Installation of FORTiS encoders is quick and easy, which will help our customers save manufacturing and servicing time.”

Benefits of FORTiS absolute encoders The FORTiS absolute encoder series is designed to be robust and resistant to a wide range of mechanical shock and vibration effects. All FORTiS-S encoders, and FORTiS-N encoders when installed with mounting spars, are rated up to 30 g which ensures dependable metrology for even the harshest environments and demanding motion control applications. In addition to its extruded enclosure, FORTiS encoders are also protected against contamination by a further level of sealing: the readhead optical unit (which runs inside the enclosure) is itself sealed to IP67 to prevent contamination by liquids, swarf and other debris. Moreover, improved sealing of the FORTiS encoder enclosure reduces air leakage from the air purge system, resulting in lower operating costs and greater system longevity. FORTiS encoders feature a range of serial communications protocols

including BiSS C, BiSS Safety, Siemens DRIVE-CLiQ, FANUC, Mitsubishi, and Panasonic. The encoder dimensions also ensure space and bolt-hole compatibility with a wide range of alternative current and legacy systems. Unlike traditional installation methods, peripheral diagnostic equipment is not essential. Renishaw’s patented set-up LED and carefully designed installation accessories ensure intuitive and right-first-time installation that is substantially faster than more conventional systems, even in restricted locations. For enhanced functionality, installers can connect the Advanced Diagnostic Tool, ADTa-100, via a standard USB connector, to a PC running Renishaw’s ADT View software. This provides a user-friendly graphical interface of advanced diagnostic information, including key encoder performance parameters such as signal strength along the axis length. A permanent record of installation data can be saved providing confidence to both machine builders and users. Renishaw FORTiS absolute encoder systems have CE approval and are manufactured in-house using strict quality-controlled processes that are certified to ISO 9001:2015 and backed by a global sales and support network. Please contact your local Renishaw sales representative to discuss how the FORTiS absolute encoder series can help solve your metrology challenges. Miniature precision bearings for dental drills In dental air turbines, miniature rolling bearings must overcome a very demanding set of challenges. As well as rotating at speeds of up to 500,000 rpm, these bearings must provide extremely quiet operation and meet rigorous hygiene requirements. NSK offers precision miniature bearings made from stainless steel especially for this application. Driven pneumatically by a turbine wheel, the two bearings in the head of the instrument ensure stable guidance of the drill during dental procedures. Miniature bearings, which have an outer diameter of just 6.35 to 7 mm, need to attain speeds of up to 500,000 rpm and stop very quickly. In addition, the bearings must avoid the generation of micro-vibrations and tolerate frequent cleaning and sterilisation, usually with hot, moist air in an autoclave environment.

www.nskeurope.com

F

or many years NSK has been developing and manufacturing precision miniature bearings for dental air turbines. Historically, these bearings were destined exclusively for the Asian dental equipment market, but today also for Europe. Among the materials used to make the bearings is ES1, a special stainless steel developed by NSK that provides significantly increased purity and corrosion resistance compared with the commonly selected AISI 440C (equivalent to ISO 1.4125). The high purity of ES1 stainless steel has a positive effect on bearing service life, since any inclusions or structure irregularities can cause stress cracks or flaking on the bearing raceway. Using ES1 also increases corrosion resistance. The rolling elements of NSK´s miniature bearings for dental drills are made of highperformance ceramics, while the cage material is either PEEK (a high-performance plastic) or Torlon® PAI (a polyamide-imides thermoplastic).

68|

All of the components used within these miniature precision bearings achieve the highest levels of accuracy. This outcome applies equally to the reproducibility of the ball diameter as it does to the surface quality (roughness) of the raceway, and the roundness of the raceway and cage. NSK also offers dental bearings in the highest accuracy class ABEC9 (P2) while attaining a bore diameter sorted tolerance class from 0.0025 to 0.00125 mm, and from 0.00125 to 0 mm. The consequence: NSK bearings produce significantly less micro-vibration and emit less noise than comparable bearings from other manufacturers. These characteristics derive from factors such as considerable investment and research

in production technology, as well as the development of dedicated test and measurement processes for the various bearing sizes and types. NSK's range of precision miniature bearings for dental air turbines includes four series of deep groove ball bearings and angular contact ball bearings, with more than 40 different types and sizes. Along with typical external diameters of 6.35 to 7 mm, the bearings have a typical bore diameter of 3 mm for widths of 2.3 to 2.8 mm, while the lubricant is CF1, a low-viscosity, high-performance oil. Press pictureDental air turbines are equipped with two high-precision miniature bearings that reach speeds of up to 500,000 rpm

Wave Spring or Coil Spring? A comparison of Crest-to-Crest™ wave springs and round wire coil springs Crest-to-Crest™ wave springs can offer similar loads and deflection to traditional coil springs, but at around half the height. They can reduce axial space by up to 50 per cent, leading to an overall decrease in assembly size, weight and cost. For design engineers looking to utilise these benefits and discover if a Crest-to-Crest™ wave spring can replace a coil spring in their application, Simon Ward, technical manager at TFC, European partner of Smalley, answers some common questions about wave springs. What are the key differences? Wave springs and coil springs are both types of compression spring, primarily used to provide an axial force in either a static or dynamic application. However, there are differences. Coil springs are typically made of round wire, whereas wave springs are made from flat wire. This provides an opportunity to significantly reduce working heights within any assembly. Space-saving is key in medical applications, such as handheld instruments like dental tools and insulin pens, which must be lightweight and compact. A wave spring, true to its name, utilises a sinusoidal waveform to generate the required axial force. A Crest-to-Crest™ wave spring has multiple turns to build up the free height of the spring to achieve the required deflection characteristics. Another difference is the way that wave and coil springs store and release energy. A coil spring has a pitch angle and is torsional so it can twist as it compresses, meaning not all force is necessarily aligned with the axis. On the other hand, wave springs rely on bending — as load is applied, the waves begin to flatten, providing an upward force, allowing for complete axial load transmission.

How do I swap from using a coil spring to a Crestto-Crest™ spring? For design engineers currently using coil springs, switching to a Crest-toCrest™ wave spring needs careful

70|

consideration. There is an extensive range of standard sizes that may suit but in 70-80 per cent of cases we will develop a bespoke design to maximise the benefits. Before designing any wave spring, it helps for TFC to understand the space constraints and the spring performance characteristics. The final design is then achieved by modifying the number of waves and turns, adjusting material cross section and wave heights. Choice of material also affects the design and will normally be dictated by the operating temperature and environment where the spring must function.

If a Crest-to-Crest™ spring does not suit the application, then we have several other options including single turn and nested springs. To identify the correct wave spring for your application, the best thing to do is work with a specialist. An experienced TFC engineer can help you find the ideal wave spring, to help you achieve design breakthroughs. Raspberry Pi 4 Model B 8GB Starter Kit from OKdo now available through RS Components and OKdo Exclusive starter kit provides high-level experience at entry-level price RS Components (RS) and OKdo, trading brands of Electrocomponents plc (LSE: ECM), a global omni-channel solutions partner for industrial customers and suppliers, have announced the exclusive availability of a starter kit based on the 8GB version of the latest Raspberry Pi single-board computer (SBC). The Raspberry Pi 4 Model B with 8GB of RAM is the most powerful version of the Raspberry Pi SBC produced to date and the kit provides everything needed to take full advantage of that performance. This includes a 32GB MicroSD card pre-loaded with Linux (NOOBS 3.1.1), a 5V power supply, HDMI and USB cables, an SD card reader, and an aluminium case with fan and heatsinks, along with OKdo’s ‘get started’ guide and ‘get inspired’ project handbook. As stated, in addition to an aluminium case and cooling fan, the kit also includes three heatsinks that can be attached directly to the board’s processor, the RAM and the USB controller. These hardware features enable users to make full use of the processor’s maximum operating speed of 1.5GHz. With 8GB of LPDDR4 RAM memory, the Raspberry Pi 4 Model B supplied in the kit can outperform many desktop PCs. The Raspberry Pi 4 Model B also features two micro-HDMI ports, meaning it can drive two external displays at the same time at up to 4Kp60 resolution. The two micro-HDMI to HDMI leads supplied in the kit allow users to make use of this new feature for even easier connection. The processor on the Raspberry Pi 4 Model B is the most capable ever to be used in a Raspberry Pi; the Broadcom BCM2711 is a quad-core processor featuring four Arm® Cortex®-A72 64-bit cores based on the Armv8 architecture. Furthermore, the Raspberry Pi 4 Model B extends its interface options and now offers two USB 3.0 ports alongside the two USB 2.0 ports. This is complemented by 2.4GHz and 5.0GHz IEEE 802.11b/g/n/ac and Bluetooth 5.0 BLE wireless connectivity, as well as Gigabit Ethernet. The Raspberry Pi 4 Model B development kit with 8GB RAM, developed by OKdo and available exclusively through OKdo and RS globally, really does give makers and engineers easy access to the most powerful SBC available today. It can form the basis for the latest and most demanding applications in the fields of AI, robotics and Industry 4.0. Despite this high performance, it still provides easy access for educators and students a way to explore the highest level of processing performance at an entry-level price.
