CKF enable Laithwaites to reach 98% productivity CKF have recently designed, installed and commissioned an extensive new case feed and palletising system for Laithwaites wine, an established, thriving ecommerce and retail business based in Gloucester. The new system enabled Laithwaites to handle a 50% increase in demand during 2020 and improve productivity from 65% to a phenomenal 98%.
F
or over 50 years Tony Laithwaite and the team at Laithwaites wines have been providing their valued customers access to the very best quality wine from around the world, having uniquely developed personal relationships with over 450 passionate growers and wine makers. An increase in customer demand for online purchasing meant the ageing plant at their Gloucester facility, which had served them well, was no longer fully supporting their needs. Towards the end of 2019 CKF were approached by the Laithwaites team to develop and deliver a new automated palletising solution to meet their current and projected future requirements. CKF are leaders in automated palletising and case handling with more than 30 years’ experience supporting different industries including Food & Beverage, Logistics, Pharmaceutical and Automotive. The engineering team at CKF gained a comprehensive understanding of Laithwaites operations through detailed analysis of the available product data and key review meetings with the Laithwaites ops team. CKF proposed a new fully automated layer palletising system with a multi-lane accumulation feed system mounted on a new mezzanine floor. Laithwaites wine distribution from the Gloucester facility is defined by online and retail sales, delivery routes, carriers, regions and time to consumer. This requires the filled cases of wine to be automatically sorted and placed onto the correct pallet to be shipped through the correct carrier. Laithwaites Gloucester facility is a high-bay warehouse with a large demand on floor area. The new CKF installed system maximises the use of the ground floor by moving the accumulation and handling of cases to a new highlevel mezzanine. The new fully automated solution uses multiple lanes of low friction conveyors which accumulate full pallet loads of cases (weighing up to 25kg per case) prior to releasing them to two layer palletisers.
6|
The new CKF fully automated system was installed and commissioned in two phases through 2020 working closely with the Laithwaites team to eliminate any operational disruption. Providing a significant increase in productivity to 98%, the benefits of the new system configuration have also enabled Laithwaites Wine to handle a substantial increase in throughput, reduce excessive manual handling and relocate the remaining manual processes into the area below the mezzanine floor and away from busy trucking routes, providing increased safety for their employees. Four excuses not to take your enclosure cooling maintenance seriously. There is an adage that time is money, this is particularly true when it comes to production downtime. Hold ups in production could result in lost money- a lot of lost money!
L
ENGINEERING UPDATE
osses of upto £480,000 have been suggested that one of the UK’s largest automotive manufacturers could lose EACH HOUR; when they experience downtime on their paint plant. Your overheads may not be as substantial as the above example, but that doesn’t take away from the fact that the old adage you hear in every corner of business and production is true: Regardless of your industry and the product you manufacture, production downtime is a crucial performance indicator to monitor because of the direct impact it can have on your bottom line. More downtime equals increased spares/maintenance costs, taken directly from your profit. This could have been invested to meet more pertinent business objectives, purchasing new machinery etc.. Do you ever hear (or even make) any of the following excuses as reason not to tackle climate control provision and maintenance in your production and automation facilities? 1. “I will just fix a problem when it occurs” In the past, the approach of reactive maintenance was seen as acceptable for most businesses. However, times have changed. The key goals of any sized business are now becoming “increased throughput”, “Cost Efficiency”, “Continuous Improvement”. Potential roadblocks to output targets need to be nipped in the bud and nobody wants to be the one in the morning meeting explaining why yesterday’s targets weren’t met! The implementation of a semi-regular maintenance schedule doesn’t have to be massively timeconsuming. Even something as simple as a weekly visual check of cooling equipment filter mats or any system alarms can alert you in good time to

call in the experts, who can then perform a more detailed review for you. 2. “We just open the enclosure door for a while” This is treating the symptoms rather than the illness. If you are having to resort to a tactic such as using large fans to blow ambient air into an open enclosure you could be doing more harm than good. Not to mention that this is a massively dangerous solution from a health and safety standpoint. An enclosure’s purpose is to create an environment in which electrical equipment is protected from ambient contaminants. Having the door open allows a constant stream of dirty air to be pulled into the enclosure. This will then gather in switchgear/connection points and can cause short circuits or block onboard fans which will result in damage to componentry, reduced life and possible critical component failure. If this course of action is required it can point to the fact that the cooling equipment currently employed is not adequate for the installation, or it requires some level of maintenance to bring it back into working order. A RiAssure FREE Cooling Review from Rittal is perfect in this instance as your local Climate Control expert will perform a short appraisal of your existing equipment, give you honest feedback as to whether the equipment is adequate, and also provide details/quotations for a service contract to suit your ongoing needs.
IT INFRASTRUCTURE
3. “My equipment is currently operating, and I haven’t serviced it in months/years” The problem may be “out of sight, out of mind” for now but the longer your cooling equipment is left unchecked, the higher the risk. For example, if a fan unit is in a dusty environment and the filter mat becomes clogged, this will reduce its effectiveness to cool the electrical equipment within due to a reduced level of air throughput. This in turn can increase the enclosure internal temperature. As a rule of thumb, for every 10°C you increase your internal temperature, you halve the life of the equipment within and increase the likelihood of an unexpected failure. 4.“I don’t have the manpower/ we have a company who does that work for us” Many companies I visit tell me that they outsource their servicing to a third party, however I tend to question what checks they are performing, given that I have been called onto site because an enclosure is overheating!
On one occasion, I asked the customer to speak with his current service provider to understand what checks were being undertaken, because his cooling units were in quite a state of disrepair. It became clear after a short discussion that they serviced “Air Conditioning” in the offices and didn’t even look in the factory… Obviously, this is not the case for all service providers out there, however climate control equipment becoming increasingly efficient, while new, sophisticated, cutting-edge technology is launched every year. The only guarantee of the highest level of checks and service will come from engineers who have been trained by the manufacturers about the technology and its detailed workings. Rittal has been manufacturing industry-leading climate control equipment for 30 years and all of our service staff are highly trained on the whole portfolio to ensure they can remedy your issues. Take the introductory example again and turn the spotlight onto your business. Everyone has budgets and savings targets to hit, so ask yourself, can you afford NOT to have correct maintenance in place?

Tel s o n i c ’s u l t ra s oni c t e c h n o l o g y i n d e m a n d for w e ara bl e t hera py d e vi c e m a n u f a c t u re The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has required an agile response from not only the NHS but also the manufacturers of the personal protection equipment, medical devices and monitoring systems required to treat seriously ill patients. Achieving the high volumes required, has in turn, generated an increase in demand for the technologies used to produce these essential items, including ultrasonic systems used for performing welding processes. Telsonic has been pro-active in assisting both end user manufacturers and automation machine builders by providing the modules, systems, tooling and technical support needed to respond quickly to these unprecedented challenges. In a recent application, Telsonic UK has supplied a complete twin head ultrasonic welding station, integrated as part of the manufacturing process for a wearable therapy device. This battery powered disposable device, similar in size to a small wristwatch, is attached to the patients leg and sends out electrical impluses that reduce the risk of Venous Thromoembolism, a dangerous blood clot condition suffered by almost one third of seriously ill coronavirus patients. As a result, the NHS has ordered thousands of these potential life saving devices.
The device is manufactured by Firstkind medical, a UK based science-led medical devices company who manufacture a range of non-invasive geko™ branded products with an embedded ground-breaking NMES technology platform. Neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) is a treatment using electricity to stimulate muscles and nerves, helping to improve flexibility, strength, and movement The ultrasonic welding technology supplied by Telsonic for this application has been integrated as part of a comprehensive pallet line automation system, built in-house by Firstkind. The device casing is manufactured in Polypropylene and the ultrasonic system is used to precisely stake four hollow pins into moulded recesses, effectively attaching the back onto the device, thus enclosing the internal assembly and sealing the battery in place. Components are presented on twin cavity pallets for processing by Telsonic’s twin head installations. Each ultrasonic system comprises of a MAG3512S generator, an air cooled precision adjustable and spring

loaded integrated SE3512VF converter module together with a Titanium booster mounted to a Telsonic AC450 pneumatic actuator with a Titanium 4 point single body sonotrode. The sprung loaded head assemblies deliver a controlled staking action, allowing the material to flow at a low part reactive closure force. Weld delivery control is determined by precise weld and hold time from the machine’s main PLC. The challenge presented by the weld specification dictates that the ultrasonic welding process has to produce an aesthetically pleasing result whilst achieving a tight closure gap between the parts. In addition, to ensure patient comfort, the weld must be constrained sub flush within the recesses. The component assembly retention strength has to be fit for purpose whilst in use, offering anti-tamper proofing, yet ultimately allowing disassembly for battery removal after use for recycling and disposal purposes. The application requirement for multiple stake positions welded simultaneously on one tool requires pin / recess moulding design in collaboration with precise sonotrode tool face design and actuator force delivery. In addition to the technical challenges surrounding the application, timescales were extremely important to get the weld station completed ready for the line installation and in production as quickly as possible. To adhere to COVID rules, the factory acceptance test (FAT) at Telsonic UK was conducted remotely and successfully with Firstkind using PC based visual tools. Experience of this type of application, underpinning Firstkind’s confidence gained in the weld solution proposed, together with Telsonic’s pro-active engagement throughout the project, relating to material selection, joint design, and process integration, were contributory factors in Telsonic securing this business. Telsonic UK offer a comprehensive range of ultrasonic modules and systems for a variety of , plastic welding, cutting, sealing, cut’n’seal, food cutting, metal welding, packaging, sieving, and cleaning applications within a wide range of industries.

Mitigating the Effects of Pulsating Flow in Flow Measurement Titan Enterprises has published a new technical article that discusses how variation in flow velocity can impact flow measurement accuracy and how to mitigate any undesirable effects.
I
t is well known that flowmeters are sensitive to effects such as pulsating flow which can generate errors in flow measurement. Pulsating flows are common in systems using diaphragm, peristaltic or piston pumps for example. In a pulsating flow system, the velocity profile of the flow undergoes a dramatic change during each cycle of pulsation compared to even flow conditions. According to theory, to accurately measure flow in a pulsating flow scenario the sampling rate of an electronic flow meter needs to be at least double the frequency rate of the pulsations themselves. If the pulsation rate is not taken into account, aliasing of the flow signal will be seen, resulting in erroneous measurement from the flowmeter.
18|
Using advanced electronics, Titan's Atrato® and Metraflow® ranges of ultrasonic flowmeters are able to resolve the ultrasonic signals to about 50 picoseconds. With downstream signal processing, Titan’s ultrasonic flowmeters are able to accurately measure pulsating fluid flow that is less than 10Hz. To accurately measure pulsating flows above this frequency requires inline pulse dampening. To read the technical article in full please click here. For further information on the Atrato and Metraflow range of ultrasonic flowmeters please click here or contact Titan Enterprises on +44 (0)1935 812790 or sales@flowmeters.co.uk.

As different contractors’ teams needed to work on the project at the same time the base of the tank had to be fully illuminated. This objective was achieved using 60 perimeter mounted lights, fewer than the number proposed by other companies. Using highly efficient Wolf lights, requiring fewer transformers, led to substantial cost reductions. The lighting solution required 48 mid-power WF-250XL floodlights mounted using magnet fixing kits at a 2m height on the tank wall, projecting light from the perimeter towards the centre. An additional 12 high power WF-300®XL LED floodlights illuminated out from the central tower of the tank.
Wolf Safety’s bespoke lighting solutions add value and cut costs
A
s world leaders in manufacturing hazardous area portable and temporary lighting, Wolf Safety know that many customers require a bespoke solution which addresses safety, technical and logistical issues raised by a specific project. So when the Wolf team was asked to propose a lighting solution for the inspection and maintenance of a condensate LNG tank in Norway it was an ideal opportunity to demonstrate the company’s technical expertise and bespoke service. This enhanced capability proved a key factor in Wolf Safety being awarded the contract, following a highly competitive international procurement process. Says Miles Jackson, Sales Director: “We not only came up with a better lighting scheme but also a safer, total solution, delivered at considerably lower cost than our competitors. This addressed all safety aspects, including correct fusing of very long extra-low voltage power cables. Project summary: The LNG (liquefied natural gas) storage tank to be inspected and maintained is 60m in diameter and 45m high. The task required the use of a SELV (Safe Extra Low Voltage) power supply and this, combined with limited access to the tank, raised several issues.
20|
In their blueprint for the project Wolf’s experienced team also met the challenge of getting power safely from the SELV transformers located on the roof of the tank, out to the perimeter of the tank base. Emergency LX-400E luminaires (luminaires with an additional battery power source) will provide back-up illumination in the event of a power failure, while a magnet based cable management solution will allow cables to be raised off the tank floor.` For further information about bespoke ATEX temporary lighting solutions for use in hazardous areas, go to: www.wolfsafety.com

LATEST NEWS FROM MGP Manufacturing Barometer aims to uncover if COVID-19 could permanently change industry working practices forever
T
he UK’s largest survey of small to medium-sized (SME) manufacturing companies has been launched today to record trends in performance and confidence levels across the sector, whilst also exploring how firms are supporting their staff as a result of COVID-19. The Manufacturing Barometer, which is organised by SWMAS (the South West Manufacturing Advisory Service) and the Manufacturing Growth Programme (MGP), is looking to understand how the pandemic has accelerated new working practices that may have unearthed potential operational benefits. Exclusively for businesses with fewer than 250 employees, this quarter’s report aims to examine how working conditions have changed for manufacturers, the challenges their employees have faced and how these are being addressed. The survey will also look at remote working within the manufacturing industry to see if this has increased productivity, lowered overheads and/ or created a better work/life balance for employees. “Although COVID-19 has presented a number of challenges, we are interested in finding out if manufacturers have adopted any positive changes as a result,” explained Nick Golding, Managing Director of SWMAS. “This quarter’s Manufacturing Barometer will provide valuable insight into the new processes businesses have implemented over the past year and if they could lead to permanent changes to traditional working practices.”
22|
He continued: “We know that manufacturing will always require some level of on-site production, but could virtual meetings replace face-to-face discussions to save time and travel? “Are businesses planning more investment in digital manufacturing? Responses to this quarter’s Barometer will help us understand the future plans of SME businesses across the sector and enable us to identify the support they require.” Although a number of manufacturers are still feeling the negative impact of COVID-19, last quarter’s Barometer report showed that 31% of respondents had seen sales increase over the previous six months, with 44% predicting further growth, and nearly a third planning to take on staff. These findings indicate that, despite ongoing challenges, some SME businesses across the sector are beginning to feel more optimistic about the future.
Martin Coats, Managing Director of MGP, went on to add: “It’s vital that we are aware of how current conditions are continuing to affect SME manufacturers, so we can inform Government of the support the sector will continue to require as it looks to recover. “The Manufacturing Barometer will highlight the recent experiences of businesses across the sector and also reveal their intentions around future investment and job creation.” He concluded: “We invite companies to share their vision for the future, how recent external factors have influenced operational plans and what assistance businesses need to address challenges and make the most of new opportunities.” The Manufacturing Barometer can be filled out here and will be live until Friday 23rd April.

Loma Systems® Launches Cw3 Run-Wet® Combo and Checkweigher Systems For Harsh Washdown Environments As a leader in the design and manufacture of inspection equipment for food and pharmaceutical industries, ‘Check & Detect’ specialists, LOMA SYSTEMS®, recently launched their new groundbreaking CW3 RUN-WET® Combo and CW3 RUN-WET® Checkweigher systems. The move follows increased demands from food manufacturers for improved hygiene and cleaning efficiency for inspection equipment, as well as reduced machinery downtime due to frequent, harsh washdown regimes.
With both being fully IP69 rated and designed to follow the latest industry leading principles for optimum hygiene standards, Loma’s CW3 RUNWET® Combo provides a combined checkweigher and metal detector in one, whereas the CW3 RUN-WET® Checkweigher is a standalone checkweigher system. With current inspection systems, costly production delays can often occur from both time consuming, difficult cleaning, and waiting for the equipment to dry. Unprotected sensitive electrical parts of machines often need to be ‘bagged’ prior to washdown to prevent any kind of water ingress - one of the most common causes of system and component failure. Furthermore, certain checkweigher and metal detection systems are not suitable for high care food production environments where hygiene standards are highest and harsh washdown cycles are frequent. This lack of cleaning efficacy means that bacterial contamination in food still remains one of the biggest causes of product recall. Loma’s RUN-WET® systems were developed in combination with feedback from many customers. By producing a far more sanitary design that is both quicker and easier to clean, the risk of bacterial contamination can be minimized, thereby increasing food safety and satisfying the strictest Codes of Practice and Food Safety Standards. Created to withstand harsh, high-pressure and high-temperature deep cleaning regimes, the systems are suitable for high-care food environments, such as protein, dairy produce, meat, fish, convenience food and more.
26|
Following many of the EHEDG guidelines, the RUN-WET® Combo and Checkweigher systems offer a host of new features and smart design techniques to keep factories running better. They include easier to wash frames that use surfaces for quicker water run off, minimal welds and reduced contaminant traps for optimum deep cleaning, with reduced risk of water ingress. Removable top panels provide easy access to clean the conveyor belt without compromising safety, and enclosed motors, controls and pneumatics are all high-pressure and high-temperature washdown proof to IP69 rating. As an additional benefit, the systems require no drying time following cleaning; this immediate start functionality greatly improves overall equipment effectiveness, helping to provide fast-paced food manufacturing and processing facilities with valuable gains in production time and cost savings. “Loma has worked with the food industry for over 50 years, and our teams strive to understand inspection challenges faced by food manufacturers and processors,” said Toby Kemp, Loma’s Director of Marketing & Innovation. “We always engineer with the customer in mind, and already we’re being told how our new CW3 RUN-WET® Combo and CW3 RUN-WET® Checkweigher systems are helping to increase production line efficiencies and improve overall food safety.” For more information on Loma’s CW3 RUN WET® Combo LINK and CW3 RUN-WET® Checkweigher LINK.

ifm module turns any sensor into a speed monitor The new DP2122 minidisplay module from ifm electronic transforms any sensor that provides a pulse output into a speed monitor with a local display and two user-adjustable switching setpoints. Not only does this provide a versatile and costeffective solution for a wide range of speed monitoring applications, it also greatly reduces the processing load on the control system PLC compared with using the PLC to directly evaluate pulses from the sensor as a way of determining speed. Typical applications for the DP1222 module include monitoring the operation of belt and screw conveyors, fans, centrifuges, separators and other equipment where speed must be maintained within a specified operating range. Equally suitable for use with inductive, capacitive and photoelectric sensors, the DP2122 module has an M12 connector which means that it can either be directly mounted on the sensor or connected to it with a standard cable. It provides two switching outputs which can be configured as normally open or normally closed, plus an IO-Link interface that provides continuous real-time transmission of the speed value. The IO-Link interface can also be used to configure the module, or alternatively setting can be carried out using the integral pushbuttons. The four-digit LED display provided by the DP2122 module shows the current speed in green when this is in the range between the upper and lower switching points, and red when it is outside this range, thereby providing an instant visual indication of abnormal operating conditions. Separate LEDs are provided to confirm that the module is powered, and to show the status of the switching outputs.

Process Safety Protecting compressors with advanced rupture disc manufacturing methods The use of dry gas seals on large operating equipment such as turbo compressors has increased significantly over a number of decades particularly in harsh working environments such as oil & gas, petrochemical and gas processing industries. A dry gas seal uses a clean gas under pressure on the external side of the seal, so that any leakage through the seal is the buffer gas into the compressor. Not only does this protect the environment from being contaminated with process gas, but it keeps dirty gas from getting inside the seal and causing damage.
An important component of a dry gas seal is the vent system. For the primary vent system, a rupture disc is typically installed in parallel with the vent line to rupture at a set pressure and prevent excessive pressure to instruments on a primary seal failure. A signalling system, on the primary vent system is recommended to enable integrity checks while the seal system is still online. Customer’s using dry gas seals require rupture discs to be installed to vent excess pressure in the event a catastrophic failure of the primary seal occurs. In the event the pressure increases beyond its predetermined limit a higher gas flow or back pressure in the piping system is present and needs to be safely vented. A signalling device is also required to detect a change in the rupture discs status in order to initiate a shutdown of the process in the event of an overpressure situation. REMBE’s reverse acting rupture disc with an integrated polyamide signalling device (SGKIKB) is a cost-effective rupture disc which is suitable for the demanding conditions found in dry gas seal applications. Used extensively in downstream projects, the IKB is the only reverse acting rupture disc to be manufactured using REMBE’s unique Contour Precision Lasering (CPL) technology ensuring high quality, accurate, burst control even in the harshest of environments.

CryoCoax sponsors the CERN Quantum Technology Initiative Supporting continuing growth in quantum computing CryoCoax ,
leaders in the manufacture of cryogenic cable assemblies, for medical, research and quantum computing applications have joined other technology specialists in sponsoring the CERN Quantum Technology Initiative (QTI). The programme will explore the potential of devices harnessing perplexing quantum phenomena such as entanglement to enrich and expand its challenging research programme. Today’s information and communication technology grew out of the invention and development of quantum mechanics during the last century. But amazing as it is that billions of transistors can be packed into a smartphone or that photons are routed around the internet with the help of lasers, the devices underpinning the “first quantum revolution” merely rely on the weird properties of quantum mechanics – they don’t put them to use directly. The QTI sees CERN join a rapidly growing global effort to bring about a “second quantum revolution”, whereby phenomena such as superposition and entanglement, which enable an object to be in two places at the same time or to influence another instantaneously, are exploited to build new computing, communication, sensing and simulation devices. While still in their infancy Quantum technologies have the potential to revolutionise science and society. In recent years, the growing importance and the potential impact of quantum technology development has been highlighted by increasing investments in R&D worldwide in both academia and industry.
34|
The new CERN QTI will encompass the Laboratory’s R&D activities and plans in this field and provide examples of the potential impact on research. It will also highlight the rich international network of activities and how CERN fosters research collaborations. HASCO’s cooling system celebrates its 50th birthday The standard for efficient cooling for mouldmaking For 50 years, standardised components from HASCO have been enabling mouldmakers throughout the world to ensure efficient cooling of injection moulding tools. From nipples and couplings through to nozzles and hoses, HASCO offers the most comprehensive cooling range for modern mouldmaking. The comprehensive range of variant combination options guarantees future-oriented solutions for all challenges in cooling technology.
HASCO defines the international standard in mouldmaking It was back in 1971 that HASCO developed the first plug-in connector with the respective coupling, and subsequently had it patented. Only HASCO’s hose nipple profile allows such high tearoff forces and bursting pressures, that avoids hose damage. Continuous, market-oriented further development has made it possible to establish one of the industry’s most comprehensive product ranges for mouldmaking. The portfolio consists of numerous standard components, the high-temperature range, the Push-Lok system. And was recently extended with the stainless steel and clean break systems.

ENGINEERING UPDATE issue along with supply chain issues. In the highly competitive world of food & beverage production any change in hygiene standards or safety can cause lasting brand damage, and it doesn’t need to. These issues can be directly addressed by using the data available to manufacturers.
Smart Food Factory Stratus Technologies – Greg Hookings, Head of Business Development – IIoT Enterprises are viewing the opportunity to create more intelligent automation environments by moving towards the ‘Smart Factory’, or IIoT (Industrial Internet of Things) as a great opportunity to streamline their factories.
C
onnecting devices throughout the production process and the supply chain lets manufacturers collect operational data, which, when organised and analysed, grants a new range of powerful capabilities, including real-time process optimisation. But, addressing these concerns and therefore improving asset performance forces manufacturers to move on from outdated technology. Many see the transition to IIoT (Industrial Internet of Things) as painful as it usually involves incorporating new applications with outdated systems, and that can be a source of anxiety. But it doesn’t have to be that way.
42|
Modernising computing platforms is a good place to start and can ensure that organisations have a simple platform which also offers higher levels of reliability and better manageability. This will create a solid future-ready platform on which to build on your organisation’s IIoT journey. And all journeys start somewhere, right? Many of the issues facing the food & beverage sector can be tied directly to a company’s level of IIoT adoption. One such issue that remains at the forefront is compliance with the Food Safety and Modernisation Act. According to LNS Research 60% of food & beverage manufacturers rank this as their key
Utilising this data helps manufacturers address these issues by automatically meeting the constantly changing regulatory challenges. For example, hazard analysis within food & beverage is currently performed by manually collecting sample lots and sending them to the lab for analysis. What we are likely to see as food & beverage manufacturers advance on the IIoT journey is a more automated, in-line analysis. Samples would be tested at ‘the edge’ on the factory floor in real-time using chemical and spectroscopic analysis, via the IIoT the data would be made immediately available to centralised quality systems. Few industries are more focused on return on investment (ROI) than food manufacturing, and this is why we aren’t seeing as much adoption of IIoT as other sectors. So, what is the ROI on the IIoT? The greatest measurable return may be in helping avoid a food quality or safety issue. By helping manufacturers perform realtime quality analysis, the IIoT can protect an enterprise from a recall that could prove catastrophic to brand integrity and reputation. With reported spend on supply chain operations going down this year now is exactly the right time to start your IIoT journey. Making compliance issues a thing of the past with regular actionable data coming from the line is what will really set your production facility apart from the competition. Rationalizing Electrical Installation Technology In electrical installations decisions are made in the early stages that ultimately result in hidden cash drains. By using system-oriented concepts and decentralized automation technology such financial consequences can be avoided. Murrelektronik’s approach keeps cost savings at the forefront of these early decision-making stages. By looking at the whole system from the start, we focus on how to increase standardization and efficiency in the electrical installation. Meaning that Murrelektronik can provide electrical installation solutions that reduce costs by up to 30%.
T
he three scenarios below demonstrate that electrical installation technology cannot simply be an afterthought. It must be an intentional engineering consideration and factor into the calculations for overall costs.
A long time ago, electrical installation played a classic role in machine construction. All of the control technology was placed in the control cabinet and connected to sensors and actuators in the field via large terminal blocks. The individual components – whose compatibility determined how error-prone the system was – came with expensive installation and commissioning tasks that had to be repeated from one machine to another. Standardized plug connections were rare and, when they did exist, they had to be manually configured, a tedious process. More recently, power and data were distributed in separate terminal boxes on the machine periphery. This moved the
44|
classic parallel wiring method from the control cabinet to the field. While this did lighten the installation workload slightly, the additional terminal levels meant there were more sources of potential errors as well as wiring errors between the control cabinet and the periphery. This led to the difficult and time-consuming task of troubleshooting in the event of short circuits and overloads resulting in long stretches of downtime and production failures. These days, the IO level is located in the vicinity of the process - at the sensors and actuators. This significantly reduces the size of the control cabinet. The benefits of this method include plug-in system components and molded, fully tested connectors that are IP67 rated, vibration resistant and come in a variety of lengths. Electrical installations are simpler and take significantly less time to install. Wiring errors are virtually eliminated, making the commissioning process quicker and less frustrating all around.

So, what does the future hold? No matter how far ahead you look, it is impossible to achieve significant cost savings without taking a systematic approach and using installation technology in a targeted way. Murrelektronik’s tailor-made concepts and components not only can reduce overall costs by up to 30% but also allow systems to benefit from technological progress including innovative diagnostics functions – added value for both mechanical engineers and machine operators alike.
Installation costs using a series machine as an example Caption: Decisions made at the start of the engineering process ultimately determine over two-thirds of the costs generated during machine construction. There is also great potential for savings in special machines.
A holistic approach now to avoid cash drains later Everyone, from purchasing and design to installation and commissioning teams, can help to reduce overall machine costs by taking a holistic, systematic approach and using installation technology in a targeted way. If all parties recognize that installation technology is the core driver of cost efficiency, then planning, construction and production can be more flexible, less complex and ultimately more efficient. Is there a case for a “plug and play” IP67 field installation instead of costly terminal boxes? Would standardized,
preconfigured components (from a smaller number of suppliers) allow for a coordinated system solution? Can PLC I/O assemblies be replaced by decentralized fieldbus I/O modules? Can complex cable bundles and trays be avoided by placing distribution boxes near the sensors and actuators? Are plug-in, molded cable connections being used in place of single conductors to terminals to allow for faster, less error prone installation, servicing and maintenance? How might user-friendly diagnostics increase system availability for the operator?
Connectivity as a Key Technology Murrelektronik has the answers to these questions as well as sophisticated solutions for each customer. Installation technology for machines and systems can take many shapes. Efficient installation technology planned for each application and designed with a system-oriented view opens up the potential for enormous savings, which makes the decision-making process easier. A systematic approach certainly falls within the scope of responsibility of the mechanical engineers and technicians, but also shows managers and executives how to avoid cash drains. Murrelektronik works with the customer to identify untapped opportunities and release the potential in systematic thinking. In turn, the approach often increases machine availability and leads to more simplified installation technology and smarter diagnostics. The Murrelektronik System Specialist are available to help you test out their holistic approach to system design. See where the promised 30% savings can be found!

What’s the Real Cost of Pressure Vessel Repair? In this short blog Leigh Bryan, national consultant specialist at heat transfer specialist Fulton, looks at the costs associated with shell and tube steam boiler pressure vessel repair (and asks whether you really should be questioning its cost or the value of your peace of mind). Whether you’re looking at a multiple tube repair or furnace section replacement (the infamous D Patch Repair), the costs associated with pressure vessel repair can quickly and easily begin to spiral. The actual cost of a repair can run into tens of thousands, with certified materials, coded welders, insurer-appointed NDT inspectors and, in the case of D patch repairs to conventional 3-pass boilers, refractory replacement. The time taken to carry out repairs may also mean a hire boiler is needed to
maintain delivery of steam to the site and/or process. Another cost that can run into thousands of pounds. Let’s also not forget about the potential financial, environmental and health & safety impacts of an acid clean. Here, specialist teams using often-expensive solvent- or alkalinebased treatments are required, which means the solutions used must then be stored or neutralised and disposed of in a safe manner that can also be potentially expensive. Additionally, there’s the financial impact from the boiler/process downtime, which can lead to the loss of services or product. In fact, in many cases the cost of repair is insignificant compared to the cost of several days without steam while a repair is carried out or a replacement hire boiler is delivered, installed and commissioned. So, if you’re specifying steam raising plant for
50|
a new project or even replacing ageing steam boilers, don’t just consider the initial capital costs but look at the bigger picture, such as the design of a steam boiler and the potential risks from boiler/ process downtime. Unlike conventional vertical and horizontal shell and tube steam boilers – containing long steel tubes through which hot gasses from a furnace pass and around which the water to be converted to steam circulates – the design of Fulton’s radical VSRT utilises a floating,
self-compensating heat exchanger design that eliminates the risk of thermal shock. Factor in no tubes (so a minimum 9.6mm material thickness) and NO refractory and the probability of a costly repair is greatly reduced. The VSRT is also backed by an industry-defining, 10-year pressure vessel warranty. So, perhaps the question you should really ask isn’t what the cost of steam pressure vessel repair is, but what is the value of your peace of mind? www.fulton.co.uk

New Smart Pallet Mover from Interroll provides performance boost for manufacturing logistics Sant'Antonino, Switzerland, April 19 2021. It is not the performance of modern production machines but their material supply that promises the greatest potential for further productivity increases in industrial companies today. With the new Smart Pallet Mover (SPM), Interroll has launched a awarded solution that can be adapted as a flexible and modular pallet management system to meet a wide range of application requirements in industrial manufacturing.
T
he customer and user benefits of the Smart Pallet Mover are impressive: Those who use it can now finally automate work processes in front of the machine production to avoid manual activities in safetycritical areas and manage the pallet work flow by buffering, sorting, sequencing and carrying at the right time to deliver significant improvement of the machine down time optimizing the return on investment (ROI) of the machine production cells. This not only eliminates costly production interruptions for material supply to machines, but also the risk of accidents during operation. In this way, productivity increases of up to 30 percent are possible compared to manual operation.
Ideal supplement for driverless transport systems The Smart Pallet Mover is a pallet management solution for automating pallet transport in the vicinity of manufacturing machines and for production-related picking and sequencing processes, which can also be used in Industry 4.0 environments. The SPM is designed to transport, sort and buffer boxes or pallets weighing up to 1,000 kilograms. It represents a mobile and autonomously acting material flow system that can be used, for example, as a cost-efficient supplement or substitute for forklifts or automated guided vehicles (AGVs). The Smart Pallet Mover solution consists of various modules. The center of the solution is a mobile unit (SM1000 Mover) that runs underneath non-driven conveyor sections and moves pallets lying on them. A transfer car (SM2000 Transfer Car) which moves on a rail can transport pallets between parallel conveyor sections. "With this platform solution, which is unparalleled on the world market, we are tapping into the great productivity potential offered by production-related pallet management automation for our customers and users. A user-friendly 3D online tool, the SPM Layout Configurator & Pallet Flow Simulator, makes it possible to configure a system quickly and easily as well as simulate planned operation on the computer," explains Jens Strüwing, Executive Vice President Products & Technology at Interroll. The flexibility of this innovative solution, the use of proven technologies and a very short payback period ensure that users can significantly strengthen their competitiveness.
52|
As with all Interroll products, the Smart Pallet Mover is extremely easy to install, operate and maintain. The modular plug-and-play solution can therefore be put into operation without lengthy interruptions to production, even during modernization projects. Networking capabilities based on global data standards such as REST API and JSON ensure maximum compatibility and ease of use. The conveyor modules can be reconfigured very easily if required, and height-adjustable supports allow the system to be installed even on uneven floors.
Winner of the Red Dot Award and “Best of Logistics” nominee for the IFOY Award Before the official market launch, the new solution had already won two internationally renowned awards. For example, the Smart Pallet Mover won the Red Dot Award, Product Design 2021, for its exceptional design quality and degree of innovation. At the same time, the solution was chosen by the independent experts of the "International Intralogistics and Forklift Truck of the Year Award (IFOY AWARD)" in March 2021 as a finalist of this globally renowned intralogistics award. With this new offering, Interroll is taking into account the fact that production managers are increasingly focusing on material handling, as shown, for example, by the survey "Production Logistics in Medium-Sized Businesses," which Interroll published last year: The average degree of automation of internal material transport at the companies surveyed was only 53 percent. Almost every tenth company (9 percent) had a degree of automation of less than 25 percent. Faster wall-mounting for connectors Fully EMC-shielded and highly robust outdoor housings can now be rear-mounted Han® HPR 16 B add-on housing, into which the inserts can be locked from behind.
T
he metal housings in the Han® EMV and Han® HPR series are now available in versions that enable contact inserts to be mounted from the rear, an option that simplifies the placement of interfaces on switch cabinet walls, increases the installation speed and lowers costs in the long term. HARTING has produced other connector types that feature a rear-fit mounting option. Over the past two years, the Han-Eco® A and B and the Han® B and Han® M series came out with this ‘rear-fit’ installation option. Now, the option is available for the first time for the Han® EMV and Han® HPR series.
Rear-fit mounting means that contact inserts can be installed in the housing from the rear, which is particularly important for installation in cabinets in combination with prefabricated cable assemblies. Assembling both products is further accelerated by using a mounting frame. Alternatively, the modules can be inserted directly into the housing. All Han® series that feature the Rear-Fit option make it easier to install contact inserts and cut installation times. The ‘Rear-Fit’ housings are also interoperable with earlier versions that cannot be equipped from the rear, which translates into a cost-effective, step-by-step introduction of the new housings into production.

MODULAR CONNECTORS FOR MODULAR AUTOMATION Scaling your plant operations just got easier with next-generation connectors
M
odular automation is changing the way plants operate. Sectors including pharmaceuticals, fine chemicals and food and beverage have seen an increase in the demand for customisation and smaller batch sizes. Processing plants, for example, while efficient, are less agile. Here Jonathan Parry, Senior VP and MD Europe at electrical connector supplier PEIGenesis, discusses how modular automation will benefit from the advent of modular connectors. As consumers, we love to have choices, but don’t always realise the implications this will have on the ability of plants to adapt accordingly. Large-scale plants are typically at their most efficient when they’re producing items with less variation and at scale. When customers require factories to scale production up or down, or completely change their final product, the whole production line may need to be reconfigured. Configuration of equipment is time consuming, inefficient and complex.
Modular automation: the basics Modular automation works like building blocks, where plants can replicate modules and use them to scale production to meet consumer needs. According to an in-depth analysis on modular automation by ABB, “By changing a few modules, a completely new product can be produced.” Not only does this simplify engineering, it speeds up time-to-market. The company also explains that, “A module type package (MTP) standardises the interface between the control level and module,” so that different process equipment can interact with other systems quickly and without errors. Because recipes in the food industry need to be regularly changed, modular automation can be used to modify recipes from a function library without production stoppages.
56|
Why modular connectors? Throughout a plant, each point of power, sensor data and control communication is transferred via a connector into a control or power panel. The result is hundreds of fixed point-to-point contacts that cannot be easily moved around should production requirements change. A modular connector is a multipurpose connector that can simultaneously provide multiple sources of connectivity. Modular connectors work with open automation to make plants more flexible to consumer demands. For example, PEI-Genesis supplies the Harting Han-modular connector series, a modular connector that combines power and signal circuits into one connector. The connector can be customised with over one hundred offthe-shelf modules, combining various multi-media types into a singular rectangular connector. For engineers, this means they can take advantage of modular automation without the hassle of extra cabling and the complexity of manually wiring each module. Open automation and modular connectors prove that customer choice doesn’t have to be a headache for automation environments. This type of flexibility allows manufacturers to easily reconfigure their plant to meet changing consumer demands, without the prospect of extensive downtime and significant complexity. PEI-Genesis can help turn your plant into a smart factory with a range of modular connectors to suit your needs. Grist mixing and transfer
The brewing or distilling process starts by mixing milled grain with water in a mash or lauter tun, where the starch is converted into sugar. In newer or smaller breweries, the grist case often sits below the mash tun, with a conveyor system transferring the grist to the masher. This involves high incremental costs and can add complexity to the conveying system, leading to mixing problems; water is often added unevenly, resulting in a mix that is not homogenous and reduces the yield. An alternative to complex conveyor systems are PC pumps in Seepex’s BT range. These offer installation and mashing-in flexibility, allowing the grist to be mixed with hot water and then pumped into the mash tun. Comprising a feed hopper and an auger feed screw, the pitch and diameter of the auger can be adjusted for optimal product feed, ensuring a homogenous mix and a stable yield.

Yeast handling
A critical process for any brewery or distillery is the fermentation stage; when yeast is added to the wort to convert simple sugars into alcohol. Yeast is shear-sensitive so requires very gentle and hygienic handling to avoid damaging it. Peristaltic pumps are sometimes used at this stage, but their pulsating action can have a negative effect on the quality of shear-sensitive products like yeast. By contrast, Seepex’s BCF range of PC pumps offers more gentle and hygienic handling, better preserving the yeast quality for fermentation. This is because PC pumps move the product through the pump in a series of cavities, which prevents slip from the discharge back through the pump. Slip creates shear, so compared to other pump designs which have clearances between the lobes, screws or gears, PC pumps have a very low shear action. They are also good at handling entrained

The many challenges faced throughout the brewing or distilling process can be divided into three major areas: raw materials handling, production and waste handling. In each, accurate control of product flow is essential to ensure the final product quality is consistently high. Pumps are therefore integral to brewing and distilling operations. Here, we demonstrate how switching to a progressive cavity (PC) pump can deliver efficiency, productivity and energy gains to help brewers and distillers thrive.

air and foam; important for brewers and distillers as the yeast can gain a foamy consistency at this stage. At the end of the fermentation process, yeast can also be recovered for re-use by discharging from the conical base of closed vessels or skimming from the surface of open vessels. In either case, the low shear characteristics of the BCF range offer advantages over alternative pumped methods or inefficient manual procedures.
3.
Flavour and colour dosing
The addition of flavours and colours into beers and spirits must be done accurately and constantly to ensure even distribution and a consistent final product, with any additives metered in a non-pulsating manner. Positive displacement pumps are sometimes used but their pulsating action means that once they have dispensed a product, there is a pause before they can dispense again. This results in a gap in the process, which can cause uneven distribution of ingredients.
4.
Removing spent grains, draff and hops
By-products of beer and spirit production include spent grains, draff and hops. At the end of the mashing process, they need to be transferred rapidly to storage tanks or silos to enable production to continue. The methods of removing spent grain or draff vary according to the size of the brewery. Small breweries favour manual removal, whilst larger breweries or distilleries tend to use compressed air units (pneumatic expeller units). However, brewers and distillers can significantly reduce their costs by pumping these residual materials instead. Open hopper PC pumps with auger feed systems can transport the spent grain or draff within a closed pipe system over hundreds of metres.
Seepex’s Smart Air Injection (SAI) technology is also ideal for this application. SAI can efficiently convey 15-40% dry solids (ds) spent grains, draff and hops in plugs of 20-30m length, over distances of up to several hundred metres using controlled air pulses. SAI combines progressive cavity pumping with pneumatic densephase conveying to increase process efficiency and productivity, as well as reducing energy consumption.
Improved bottom line In conclusion, by moving away from traditional and inefficient product handling methods towards innovative, problem-solving PC pump solutions, brewers and distillers can maintain their product quality, reduce their energy consumption and increase their production capacity.

Considerations for effective cleaning-in-place (CIP) systems By Matt Hale, International Sales & Marketing Director, HRS Heat Exchangers
The production of safe food and drink products is of paramount importance to producers and maintaining hygienic – in some cases sterile – production environments and equipment is a key requirement for modern food processing machinery. Apart from the simplest systems, most equipment today, particularly that which contains pipework, enclosed spaces and small apertures, is cleaned in situ without the need for dismantling or opening, and with minimal operator intervention – a technique which is known as Cleaning-in-Place (CIP).
C
leaning (or Clean) in Place has been around since the 1950s and can be defined as a method of automated cleaning of the interior surfaces of equipment, without major disassembly. One of the most widely quoted definitions is taken from the 1990 edition of the Society of Dairy Technology (SDT) Manual Cleaning In Place, which defines CIP as: “The cleaning of complete items of plant or pipeline circuits without dismantling or opening of the equipment and with little or no manual involvement on the part of the operator. The process involves the jetting or spraying of surfaces or circulation of cleaning solutions through the plant under conditions of increased turbulence and flow velocity.”
diligence purposes. Furthermore, being automatic reduces the need for human contact with potentially harmful cleaning agents or other chemicals.
Design considerations for CIP
However, if CIP is to be effective, not only does the CIP system itself need to be well designed, but the production equipment itself needs to be designed from the beginning with effective CIP in mind. Equipment and machinery must be hygienically designed and easy to manage, maintain and audit. Because of the specialised and custom nature of much food and drink processing machinery, some CIP systems will be designed specifically for a particular system or piece of equipment, although with careful design it is not uncommon to install a dedicated CIP system, such as those available from HRS.
The main purpose of CIP is to remove physical dirt and residues, as well as bacteria. It is commonly used for equipment such as piping, tanks, and fillers, and CIP employs turbulent flow or spraying and can also be accomplished with filling, soaking and agitation.
The design process must not only ensure effective cleaning but should also be as efficient as possible in terms of water, chemical and energy use. Considerations for the equipment itself include areas such as surface roughness, clean welding and the prevention of inaccessible areas
As well as ensuring that production equipment is hygienically clean and suitable for use, CIP also plays a number of other important roles. CIP systems should ensure that no cleaning fluids or contaminants remain in the equipment – ensuring food safety, and by reducing the effort and downtime required for cleaning, they also ensure production cycles are efficient and costeffective. Because of the automated or semi-automated nature of CIP systems, they provide improved control of the cleaning parameters to ensure consistent results, as well as automatic record keeping for traceability and due

May 2021 high temperatures may clean and disinfect equipment at the same time, or using steam may reduce the need for chemical detergents. Depending on the design of the system, and the risk of contamination, cleaning solutions may be reused multiple times or discarded immediately. There may also be differences between CIP and SIP (sterilise-in-place) systems. While the actual cleaning regime used will depend on a number of factors, including the risk category of the food or drink product, the physical and chemical properties of the product, and the design of the machinery in question, in many situations it is preferable to rely on water alone (together with temperature, pressure and agitation) rather than additional cleaning chemicals which could present a contamination risk. In general, the higher temperatures and greater kinetic energy provide more efficient cleaning, but the duration of the CIP cycle will be optimised according to the properties mentioned above. Different tanks and systems will have different CIP requirements
or corners where dirt and/or cleaning chemicals may build up. Reliability is also an important consideration and CIP systems must be designed to work for as long as the working lifetime of the equipment involved. It is also important to consider how user-friendly the control systems for the CIP are. For example, are they part of the overall control interface or a separate system? Another key element of an effective system is monitoring and validation of the cleaning results for traceability and due diligence purposes, and from the beginning the design of the equipment should allow this to be done in an effective manner.
Typical CIP processes Most CIP employs a similar set of operations, including: • Pre-rinsing – to remove large debris and residues • Detergent cleaning – to remove attached dirt and soiling using a caustic detergent • Rinsing – to remove detergent and dirt • Optional acid cleaning – if required to remove scaling or alkaline residues
Where detergents are required, one of the most common is caustic soda (NaOH), although many other alkali- and acidbased chemicals are available depending on the nature of the product and residues which need to be cleaned. Alkali materials are generally more effective against proteins and fats, while acids perform better where salts need to be removed. For sugars, water remains one of the most effective cleaning mediums.
HRS CIP systems HRS offers two types of CIP (and SIP) systems. The first are those which are integrated into other systems, such as HRS pasteurisers and sterilisers, as well as our Aseptic Block Series and aseptic fillers, for example. The second is the HRS series of stand-alone CIP and SIP systems. These are available with single (ST) or multiple tanks, which are heated with an HRS K Series heat exchanger. Fully skid-mounted and modular design enables for quick and easy site installation, and the fully automated systems are supplied with a programmable logic controller (PLC) system, which can operate on its own, or be integrated into the factory’s main control system.
www.hrs-heatexchangers.com HRS produces a range of dedicated CIP and SIP systems
• Rinsing – to remove the acidic cleaning agent • Disinfection – heat or chemical treatment to disinfect the equipment • Final rinse – to remove all traces of chemicals and prevent contamination These steps may be combined or used in different ways. For example, using detergent at

A Revolution in Rapid Prototyping
S
ometimes individual parts and prototypes have to be produced practically overnight. Thanks to 3D printing, or additive manufacturing, rapid prototyping is now almost unlimited in terms of geometry and hugely varied in terms of material selection. Many people facing the urgency challenge are experiencing just how essential it is for manufacturing companies to have flexibility in their own workshops. This is an issue that presents itself all over the world and has forced many companies to look at how they work. But even before the Covid-19 pandemic, the most flexible production method was additive manufacturing. While the general public still regards 3D printing as a gimmick for the production of simple plastic parts, new developments in the field of additive manufacturing have been so ground-breaking in recent years that there are now hardly any limits to what can be done. The wide selection of materials, the high speed compared to other production methods and the increased options for post-processing and tolerance control make 3D printing an indispensable tool for creating prototypes and small production runs.
68|
From ABS to steel: Wide selection of materials for 3D printing In recent years, the different methods of additive manufacturing – whether it be Multi Jet Fusion, selective laser sintering, stereolithography, PolyJet or direct metal laser sintering – have led to a radical expansion in the variety of materials that can be processed by means of 3D printing. The choice ranges from plastics to elastomers to metals. All the processes listed above have in common that the part is created layer by layer and, in most cases, must also be held in place by support structures. The wide variety of materials also mean that prototypes produced by additive manufacturing can be used in almost all sectors. Especially in cases where a prototype is needed as quickly as possible, 3D printing has become a true silver bullet for industry. The processing of metallic materials on an industrial scale has long been standard. Parts made from the particularly heatresistant metal Inconel 718 by means of direct metal laser

sintering are used for example in the aerospace industry. Using the same process, copper can be used in a design wherever good electrical conductivity is required.
Bringing together high speed and freedom of design In addition to the wide selection of materials, the relatively high speed that can be achieved by additive manufacturing for rapid prototyping is one reason why 3D printing enjoys such a good reputation within product development and manufacturing. Whilst the injection moulding process first requires a lot of time and technological effort to be invested in the production of the tooling prior to moulding the parts, the same part can usually be produced directly using 3D printing without any significant effort. The only thing to note is that the design and shape should be optimised for additive manufacturing. If, for example, overhangs are present, it is recommended that they be kept as low as possible by means of an obtuse angle. In this way, the required supporting structures can be kept out of the way so that the material required as well as the costs are reduced.
The step from design to prototype has just become much easier Additive manufacturing also offers far-reaching design freedom, which cannot be achieved for example with injection moulding or CNC machining. For example, due to the way in which a product is manufactured with additive manufacturing, it is possible to implement tunnels or honeycomb structure in the part. In addition, 3D printing means that geometries can be achieved that just cannot be done with any other production method. This fact is often key - especially in the production of prototypes - and gives engineers and designers great freedom in the design of parts that are tailored to specific applications.
Avoiding surprises Since the demands placed on prototypes can differ, it is particularly important that parts made by 3D printing are also checked after production, and some post-processing may be necessary. It makes no difference whether a prototype is made for a first test run for a better assessment of final dimensions, or if a fully functional part is being created directly through rapid prototyping. In both cases, the products produced must not deviate from the original design specification. Specialist test and inspection services are available to prevent any deviations. Suppliers like Protolabs use techniques such as 3D laser scanning technology and coordinatemeasuring devices in the production of additive parts in order to accurately analyse the physical geometries of parts. In this way, volumetric accuracy can be controlled as a final stage and even the slightest deviation from planned tolerances can be detected.
The bottom line Due to digital transformation and the new horizons opening up for industry, the rapid production of prototypes is becoming increasingly important. An idea that has just been invented today can be essential for an entire industry in just a few days. Additive manufacturing already supports this scenario across industries and can also support design teams by providing prototypes quickly - including getting them into unusual places. Using additive manufacturing, the imagination of designers can soar. And that’s what digital manufacturing is all about: the flexibility to think in any direction.

he SICK Intelligent Inspection Deep Learning App runs on SICK’s newly launched Inspector P621 2D programmable vision camera. The all-in-one package enables machine builders and endusers to set up vision classifications using artificial intelligence in a fraction of the time and cost it would take to program challenging inspections based on recognising the pre-set rules and patterns of traditional vision systems.
ENGINEERING UPDATE
SICK Launches Compact 2D Vision Camera with Deep Learning Onboard SICK is launching its first vision camera with a pre-installed Deep Learning app onboard to make it simple to create custom quality inspections of complex or irregular-shaped goods, packaging and assemblies, especially where they may have previously defied automation using traditional systems.
Practical and Affordable AI Classification
Intuitive Step-By-Step Process
Where it has previously been very challenging to achieve consistently robust and repeatable quality inspections, with SICK Intelligent Inspection they can now be mastered with high levels of reliability and availability. Automation is therefore now practical and affordable for complex imaging tasks such as sorting fresh fruit and vegetables, checking the orientation of timber profiles by recognising the annual ring structure, checking leather car seats for creases or flaws, or inspecting the integrity of solders in surface mount assemblies.
Using the SICK Inspector 621’s in-built image capture tool, users begin by collecting example images of their product in realistic production conditions. Guided step-by-step through the intuitive graphic interface, the system prompts them to sort the images into classes. Using SICK’s dStudio service, the pre-sorted images are uploaded to the Cloud where the image training process is completed by the neural network. The user can then apply further production images to evaluate and adjust the system.
Neil Sandhu, SICK’s UK Product Manager for Imaging, Measurement and Ranging explains: “By embedding the Intelligent Inspection App onto SICK’s Inspector P621 deep learning camera, SICK has made it possible for users to purchase a ready-made package that uses artificial intelligence to run complex vision inspections with ease. “Users are guided through an intuitive process that teaches the system how to recognise ‘good and bad’ examples using SICK’s speciallyoptimised neural networks in the cloud.”
72|
Once the user is satisfied, the custom-trained deep learning solution is downloaded to the SICK Inspector P621 camera where it can begin to take decisions automatically with no further Cloud connection necessary. Results are output to the control system as sensor values and digital I/O. The image inference is carried out directly on the device, so there is no need for an additional PC. As the system training is done in the Cloud, there is also no need for separate training hardware or software, saving on implementation time and cost.
ENGINEERING PDATE
May 2021
“Because it runs directly on the camera, the SICK Intelligent Inspection app does not require any additional hardware,” Sandhu continues. “So, users can automate complex vision inspections for a much lower cost of ownership. They can now consider automating quality inspections of products or goods that have just proved too difficult previously. “Even better, the system can be set up in no time at all. Many users will be able to manage this process themselves. However, if needed, SICK is also offering services to support customers through the feasibility, commissioning and neural network training process.” Users also have access to a large set of traditional machine vision tools installed as standard on the SICK Inspector P621, so they can extend the functionality of their quality inspection further. Developers working in SICK’s AppSpace can also use SICK’s Nova software tools for further custom development and to create their own SensorApps. Starting with the Intelligent Inspection on-camera package still saves significant development time and cost.
SICK Inspector P621 The SICK Inspector P621 is a versatile all-in-one 2D CMOS vision sensor with 1.3mpix image resolution. With flexible illumination provided by powerful on-board LEDs, a high-quality lens, and an adjustable electric focus, the SICK Inspector 621 provides highquality images out of the box to support the Deep Learning process. With a rugged IP65 housing, its compact 71mm x 43mm x 35.6mm dimensions mean it can be installed even in small machine spaces and at tight angles. Its versatility for many applications is assured through a wide range of communications interfaces and compatibility with EtherNET/IP, EtherCAT, Profibus and PROFINET fieldbuses. SICK Deep Learning is also now available as licensed option for all InspectorP600 2D vision sensors. Initially available with image classification, the SICK Intelligent Inspection App, will be extended to incorporate anomaly detection, localisation and segmentation functions later in 2021.
