High-speed analysis of powder and tablets with hyperspectral imaging A common application of NIR spectroscopy is the identification of the active compound or active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) present in a tablet or drug. A French company, Indatech has developed a new technology for powder and tablet analysis that relies on the innovative use of optical probes using several optical fibres to measure the surface of the sample. All the fibres are connected to a Specim NIR hyperspectral imaging system.

About Indatech Indatech was found in 2009 by Sylvie Roussel and Fabien Chauchard. Two main reasons were that Sylvie had found out that single spectra couldn’t provide the critical information that the customer needed while Fabien had been developing a solution, based on a multipoint imaging with promising results. This convinced them that hyperspectral imaging would be the best in-line technology in the future. Currently Indatech provides solutions mainly for the pharma, biotech and chemical industry. Their core business is the high-speed inspection of a tablet (hardness, API, homogeneity) and powder either in manufacturing or in process development phase.

Challenging approach meets hyperspectral imaging The challenge in their approach is the need to measure multiple optical fibres

4|

at the same time as well as they must be able to change the configuration of the measurement. “Before hyperspectral, we tested standard spectrometer connected to an optical multiplexer but in the end, the measurement took too long,” says Fabien. “So, we decided to try the hyperspectral imaging and we found out that the pushbroom imaging is the best approach because the spectra are measured in a single shot without any moving parts and the resolution can also be adapted.” “We started discussing with another manufacturer before we met Mr Timo Hyvärinen at a Pharma Congress in the United States. He presented me the company, as well as the technology behind it, and I’ve been completely convinced of the performance and the quality ever since. Specim is very reactive

and always tries to find a solution in case of a specific need. The products are robust since the company has acquired a long experience. The products have the little things that make the difference in terms of performance and quality.” says Fabien. To read the full article please click here. Want to know more? TLV Upgrades Renowned Cospect Valve: To Ease Installation And Minimise Process Disruption Through a process of continued development and product enhancements, the renowned three-in-one COSPECT pressure reducing valve from steam system specialist TLV Euro Engineering has been upgraded and is now being offered with integrated pressure gauges as standard across the range. Commenting for TLV Euro Engineering, general manager Michael Povey says: “By upgrading and offering the pressure gauges as standard across the range, we have enhanced the COSPECT to make it even more of a unified steam system solution. The integrated gauges also mean no additional pipework modification is required before or after the PRV, which reduces installation time and minimises process downtime”. Originally launched over 35 years ago, the COSPECT is a combined pilot-operated pressure reducing valve (PRV), cyclone separator, strainer and steam trap in a single component that overcomes the limitations and inadequacies of conventional PRVs and solves their many associated problems – including fluctuations in primary and secondary pressures and valve hunting and vibration – to provide improved-quality dry steam at a constant pressure and temperature.

By eliminating the conventional arrangement and combining four separate components into a single valve, the COSPECT delivers numerous engineering benefits by incorporating fewer gaskets, spool pieces and fixings, improving moisture separation and providing accurate and stable pressure control. It is also more sensitive to downstream pressure fluctuations, is reliable in operation and its unified, modular construction facilitates easy, inline maintenance. In addition to the engineering benefits, the single component design of the five-model COSPECT makes it faster and easier to install, is lighter than the sum of using separate components, reduces the amount of insulation required and reduces the requirement for pipe support brackets, etc. For further information on the COSPECT and other steam solutions, call TLV Euro Engineering on +44 (0)1242 227223, email sales@tlv.co.uk or visit www.tlv.co.uk.

Evaporative cooling

– an energy efficient and effective cooling and ventilation solution for large spaces. With British manufacturing starting up again post-COVID, overheating facilities and inadequate ventilation in buildings provides another hurdle for businesses looking to get back to normal. Evaporative cooling can offer an effective solution in a cost and energy efficient way. Refrigerant free cooling and ventilation As part of a balanced ventilation system, evaporative cooling is achieved through the natural process of direct evaporation of water into supply air, which is extremely effective in temperate climates like the UK. Air supply temperatures off the coolers do not exceed 25C, without the need to utilise any refrigerant technology.

The most energy efficient cooling system for large spaces Even on the hottest days, a standard unit covering a 250m2 area or spot cooling a 15m diameter zone can operate at a cost less than 13p in electricity and 1p in water per hour, based on service costs of £0.12/kWhr and £1.20/cum respectively. This gives an energy saving of 90% on an equivalent refrigeration-based system with a 35kW cooling load.

An additional benefit of an evaporative cooling-based solution is the cost of installation, which is a fraction of that of refrigeration.

Increasing productivity by keeping people and processes cool Having a well ventilated, comfortable work or storage area has been shown to increase productivity, product stability and improve the wellbeing of staff throughout the year. This is especially true in the summer months, where without an effective cooling solution some processes may need to be halted altogether, and excess heat becomes a safety and quality concern for staff and product. A well-balanced ventilation system is particularly important for businesses looking to maintain consistent and efficient operation in

Left: 4-way grilles bringing fresh air into a factory mezzanine area. Right: Spot cooling a food production facility

light of the ongoing COVID risk, while also helping to remove unwanted dust and particulates from the air.

A proven and flexible system With over 500 installations for some of the largest manufacturers and distributers in the UK, EcoCooling evaporative cooling systems are a proven, flexible solution which can be deployed quickly to address overheating and ventilation issues. From compact workshops to large warehouses, there are many reasons why evaporative cooling is becoming a first-choice option for many businesses.

AZM150 SOLENOID INTERLOCK: SLIMLINE DESIGN WITH 360 ROTATING HEAD AND 1400 NEWTON CLAMPING FORCE O

The AZM150 solenoid interlock can be combined with three different actuators for different installation situations: a straight actuator for sliding doors, an angled actuator for large revolving doors and a movable actuator for smaller revolving doors. One of the plus points of the interlock is the rotating actuator head which can be locked simply by putting the lid on rather than a screw fitting. The rotating actuator head has two feeder slots to enable a range of installation positions and approach options. This makes the interlock really flexible to use. The AZM150 is an electromechanical design which can be combined with high safety standards. The interlock comes with a low coding level as standard but is also available with an optional high coding level. The benefit for users: In accordance with ISO 14119, a higher coding requires fewer measures to prevent the bypassing of locking mechanisms, such as fitting out of range or in a concealed position. Schmersal is the only manufacturer which can offer electromechanical safety switches and solenoid interlocks with high coding levels. Scan the QR code to see the AZM150 in action or visit our website for more information.

Import Issues Remain Biggest Concern for UK’s Gasket & Sealing Sector The results of the UK Gasket & Sealing Association’s (UKGSA) latest survey highlights that import issues remain the biggest concern for our Members. Impacts from the pandemic When asked how they feel about the ending of COVID restrictions, 62% of our Members expressed ‘some concerns’ whilst 23% had ‘no concerns’. Almost all of our Members continued to work during lockdown and all have put stringent measures in place to keep workplaces safe and restrict the spread of the virus. Whilst some organisations, particularly those in the hospitality sector, welcomed the lifting of restrictions, for many the enforced isolation rules have created a headache. However, from 16 August further changes took effect in England allowing fully vaccinated adults to avoid self-isolation in some circumstances. We asked our Members if they had accessed coronavirus grant schemes during the pandemic. We’re pleased to report that just over half of Members were able to access grants, providing much needed support during the worst of the pandemic. When asked what negative impacts the pandemic has had on their business, Stock and Supply issues has been by far the biggest negative impact for our Members, many of whom have some reliance on imported materials. With some customers closed during the lockdown and partially operating during restrictions, Sales have also been impacted greatly.

We’re delighted to report that many of our Members are now operating at full capacity. This shows that within our sector at least, levels of confidence are increasing with activities starting to get back to pre-pandemic normal.

as Coronavirus, have compounded an issue that we knew was going to occur following Brexit, and there does not appear to be light at the end of the tunnel any time soon. Given the issues of importing/exporting, it goes hand in hand that our Members are feeling pressure to raise prices, particularly as a result of raw material costs.

Looking Ahead Despite the doom and gloom of import and export issues, 85% of our Members are optimistic about the remainder of the year which we find very encouraging for our sector. Whilst our Members successfully negotiated the challenges of a global pandemic, issues around Importing remains one of the biggest concerns (77%), with 38% of Members quoting Brexit as a continuing challenge for them.

How the UKGSA supports Members

Eighteen months on from the UK leaving the EU, import and export issues remain the biggest negative impact for our Members.

Despite a pandemic and the repercussions from Brexit, new Members have still joined the UKGSA seeing the trade association as a mechanism for marketing opportunities including networking at B2B events, providing increased exposure on social media channels and opportunities for Member to Member benefits.

Issues with availability and pricing of shipping containers, long delays at borders and increased trade barriers, as well

New short and service-friendly shaft coupling

With the ROFLEX KTR launches a new shaft coupling according to DIN 740 which is characterised by its short design and its service-friendliness. In addition to power transmission, the torsionally flexible coupling compensates for misalignments and dampens torsional vibrations. The ROFLEX is available in two designs and currently in seven sizes for torques from 65 to 790 Nm. Another five sizes will be added by the middle of 2022 and extend the performance range up to 5,000 Nm. The ROFLEX is a short shaft coupling in which the input and output shafts can be pushed together between 3 and 6 mm, depending on the size. The torque is transmitted via elastomer packages, which at the same time compensate for misalignments and dampen shocks and torsional vibrations. Should the elastomers fail due to extreme loads, the fail-safe coupling continues to hold the torque. The ROFLEX is made of grey cast iron and is available in two types: In type N, both the pocket and the cam part consist of standard hubs. In the SH SPLIT design, on the other hand, the cam hub is split. Here, the hub is specifically and mechanically separated into two halves by "fracture cutting", or "cracking". The resulting fracture surfaces centre both hub halves precisely with each other, which makes incorrect assembly almost impossible. The hub halves can be mounted on block, the fit of the bore remains unchanged. Depending on accessibility, the hub can be pushed on for assembly. Or the two hub halves can be joined around the shaft; thus the split hub can be radially installed and removed without dismantling the adjacent units. "As a rule, we recommend that our customers fit the SHSPLIT hub onto the motor shaft. This makes the coupling easier to assemble overall and in case of service there

16|

is more space available, for example to exchange the elastomer packs", says Michael Brüning, Product Manager at KTR. "In addition, it allows the user to carry out the direction of rotation check on the engine without the coupling hub." The ROFLEX has been assessed and confirmed according to the European ATEX product directive 2014/34/EU and is suitable for use in potentially explosive atmospheres. Core industries are pumps and compressors; other areas of application in general mechanical engineering are gearboxes, fans and belt drives. Both types are currently available in seven sizes for torques from 65 to 790 Nm. Five more sizes in the power range up to 5,000 Nm are to be added by mid-2022.

GSMX-P fire gas monitoring system

GSMX-P: Early and central fire gas detection The handling of bulk solids poses many challenges. One of these challenges is the enormous amount of dust that is created by conveying and processing the different products. In order not to unnecessarily strain the process and employees on site and to expose them to risks, these enormous amounts of dust get extracted. Fig. 1: Phases if fire development

This is the first step in the direction of fire and explosion protection, because dust clouds of flammable powders in the right mixture ratio to oxygen always represent a great danger. Despite accurate dedusting of the machines, there is still a high fire risk with corresponding bulk goods e.g. through glowing embers transported into the process or self-ignition of the product. So how can this risk be contained? Filter systems represent a central point in most industrial systems because the air extracted from the various machines is usually bundled and guided through a pipe / exhaust duct after the filter elements. Precise monitoring of fire gases within this pipeline enables fire incidents to be detected at an early stage not only in the filter but in all connected machines and system parts.

When do which fire gases arise? Combustion (Fire) gases develop before smoke or flames can be recognized. Depending on the bulk material, certain fire gases arise earlier, later or only to a limited extent. In order to cover exactly this point, REMBE relies not only on the measurement of carbon monoxide (CO) but also on hydrogen (H2), hydrocarbons (HC) and nitrogen oxides (Nox). In this way, monitoring can be set flexibly and precisely to process and material.

Advantage of a GSMX-P fire gas monitoring system: Fires usually develop over a long period of time. Nevertheless, many systems detect too late. Temperature rises in the exhaust air can only be detected very late by means of temperature sensors and conventional smoke detectors are too sluggish and dust-prone for use under industrial conditions due to their functioning. By the time the smoke concentrations can be detected, a fire has usually already spread too much. In contrast to other systems, the GSMX-P follows the approach of detecting the fire gases in the formation phase and thus does not have to wait

20|

for strong smoke concentrations or late temperature increases. If the gas concentrations deviate even slightly from the target state, the GSMX-P already gives a first alarm. Depending on the process conditions, >100g hot product is sufficient to represent a reproducible detection.

entire cross-section using the Venturi principle. The design not only enables representative and reproducible monitoring, but also dispenses with further electrical aids such as pumps or fans.

How does the GSMX-P work?

Almost every process in every industry can be monitored with a GSMX-P in a filter. It is a complex system for monitoring multiple gas components.

The GSMX-P fire gas detector monitors the entire cross-section of the clean gas / ventilation line. For this purpose, it is attached to the line in a separate housing. Two pipes protruding into the clean gas / ventilation line generate continuous air extraction over the

Fig. 2: GSMX-P design

Where is such system used?

The sensor is installed in the process and gets used to the process and the conditions in the first step. This makes it possible to create an exact picture of the conventional gas concentrations to then find the optimal limit value for each application. This is usually just above the conventional concentrations in order to detect even the smallest deviations and to prevent a fire.

Chain Selection Made Easy Donghua Limited, the UK arm of one of the world’s largest chain manufacturers, has launched a new Chain Selection Chart and re-categorised its extensive Drive Chain products into three ranges to help make it easier for customers to identify the right chain solution. Chain Selection Chart We have developed a simple reference guide for our customers – the Donghua Chain Selection Chart. The chart provides a visual 1 - 5 star rating highlighting our recommendations for each chain product for wear resistance, fatigue resistance, strength, shock load, corrosion resistance, self-lubrication, easy break, FDA approved and so on. It’s a must-have reference document in an engineer’s toolkit.

Our three new Roller Chain ranges are: Standard, Solution and Premium. The Standard Range features a variety of standard chain manufactured with precision to suit simple drives with large diameter sprockets or complex drives with multiple sprockets and high load bearings. The new Premium Range offers customers ultimate solution to problems with chain wear, chain fatigue, high speed, lubrication, chain length accuracy and chain strength offering optimum performance in extreme conditions. A new Premium chain is being launched in the UK later this year. The Solution Range offers our customers a genuine solution to problems with chain wear, chain fatigue, corrosion, high speed, lubrication, chain length accuracy and chain strength with specific build features designed to enhance durability and withstand a range of arduous environments. Our new Solution Range incorporates Donghua’s existing HSP Chain, SLR Chain and CP Chain plus our recently launched EXL Chain.

HSP Chain: Donghua’s Heavy Super Power (HSP) Chain is specifically designed for aggressive environments and has become a highly popular chain in the UK. HSP Chain is suited to agricultural and industrial applications and boasts ultimate tensile strength up to 50 per cent higher than DIN standard chains. HSP Chain has wide-waist plates to give extreme fatigue strength and high interference fit between pins and plates.

22|

SLR Chain:

EXL Chain:

Donghua’s Self-Lubricating Roller (SLR) Chain incorporates special oil impregnated sintered bushings which extend beyond the inner plates to prevent dirt ingress, giving these chains their self-lubricating characteristics.

Recently launched in the UK, the premium EXL Chain offers significant benefits over standard Roller Chain. It utilises different materials, material treatments and layer technologies, to offer the best possible quality/price ratio for all applications.

Nickel plated throughout to prevent corrosion, and with chemically plated and tempered pins, SLR Chain offers improved wear resistance and added protection in the bearing area. This chain is ideal for use in areas where chain lubrication is difficult or undesirable.

Aimed specifically for the after-market, EXL Chain is designed, manufactured and tested for unbeatable accuracy and performance in arduous conditions, offering enhanced wear and fatigue resistance and greater precision.

CP Chain: Donghua’s Chromized Pin (CP) Chain offers increased wear life over standard roller chain. It is designed with a chromized pin; adding a chrome surface coating to the pins results in super-hard pins which extends the wear life of the chain. With a 1100 HV10 surface hardness, CP Chain is ideal for dirty / dusty conditions, giving high abrasion resistance.

The chain is designed with a new hardened, shot-peened wide-waist plate for increased fatigue strength and a seamless cold forged solid bush and roller to give full contact between the pin, bushing and roller for higher durability. The EXL Chain has optimised cylindrical parts which improve sliding contacts to help increase service life. It also incorporates Donghua’s unique ‘Easy Break Technology’ which enables the EXL Chain to be cut in the field using Donghua’s Plate Extractor tools.

Spare parts for Production Manufacturing Often Production stores are the largest single application in a manufacturing environment and when you have several different items all being produced on the same production line, downtime just isn’t an option. As a result, these production lines will need to be changed. This makes the change parts store mission critical in the healthy running of the production line. In manufacturing its normal for production lines to have maintenance stores, many are electro-mechanical, and thus prone to break down. This is where the maintenance store really comes into its own as it ensures that spare parts are available to keep the production line back up and running. The cost of loss production means that companies will look for the best solutions to guard against production line downtime. Automation offers a simple and over time less expensive solution. A vertical lift system for example utilises all the available space (up to ceiling) and is designed to make the maintenance store more easily accessible as its located at a more convenient location, which speeds up the production. Also, automation guarantees near on 100% stock accuracy with no line downtime. This is useful when stores need to understand what’s to remain and what is to be changed for different production runs such as increased production capacity, gained by feeding product to the process faster and more accurately.

26|

Usually, spare parts are supplied to customers directly from manufacturing operations. These spare parts can be stored separately, in stock rooms, or in finished goods. Either way they require efficient storage and picking to ensure a faster customer response. An added opportunity that some manufacturers are benefiting from is to take a centralised production store approach by positioning smaller holdings at Point of Use. This again can offer benefits depending on how your production is set-up. Automation also ensures that parts are handled as few times as possible as parts can be easily damaged, so it is essential that care is taken in transit between store and production line. The flow of materials in and out is critical as it dictates production capacity.

Automation also benefits the finished goods to shipping process - Items need to be stored before completion for Work in Progress buffers or stores – this makes access extremely easy and has become popular in many UK manufacturing facilities. These buffers and stores should be situated as close to the production line as possible in a space efficient way with little workflow impact. Kardex in the UK has been working with Manufacturers for more than 30 years and we have created a white paper that shows some other key points, especially in regard to the warehouse. ess space, more output is not surprisingly high on the ‘wish list’ for any forward thinking manufacturer and the ArcWorld standard systems available from YASKAWA are ideal for replacing, or supplementing manual welding required in metal manufacturing applications. These fully integrated systems offer the distinct advantage of being selfcontained, so it’s a bit like buying any machine tool, you choose the size of machine you need and a location to install it and away you go. The YASKAWA ArcWorld HS Micro and RS Mini systems are easy to install, operate and relocate in a small footprint of either 2.3 sq. metres for the Mini, or as little as 1.4 sq. metres for the Micro. Both systems offer the possibility for operators to double their output with up to half the preparation time, compared to manual welding. The Micro system is supplied complete with robot and controller and its hinged door opening provides lots of options even though it’s a very small, compact system. The Mini system has a revolving door and table, which again means maximum flexibility within a compact system. The systems are designed to allow quick changes of jigs, which is crucial in helping to reduce the all-important setup time and improving production output compared to conventional manual welding practices. Furthermore, improved operational consistency by never missing a weld and ensuring the same quality of weld at the end of the shift as at the start, also means reduced ‘spatter’ which improves the capacity for fettling. Both systems incorporate a MOTOMANAR900 robot with YRC1000 controller, a start / stop button panel and fume extraction hood. They also feature a platform and casing with dark green polycarbonate glare shield protection and CE-marking. The Yaskawa Motoman ArcWorld Micro and Mini robotic welding systems are pre-engineered, pre-assembled and shipped ready to weld and represent the latest generation of cost-effective automated solutions for welding applications. They can be configured with your choice of welding power source and are ready to mount your component tooling.

LinMot Linear Motors Slash Energy Costs to 5% of Pneumatic Solutions

P

owering actuators directly with Linear electric motors rather than air cylinders can result in huge cost and emission savings across the board. So much of our industry uses compressed air that is often regarded as the fourth utility, after electricity, natural gas and water. However, compressed air is more expensive than the other three utilities when evaluated on a per unit energy delivered basis. Quin Systems, exclusive UK suppliers of LinMot Linear Motors for over 25 years, can help you calculate the predicted carbon and energy savings achieved by switching from a pneumatic solution to a linear motion solution.

LinMot, one of the world’s leading manufacturers of industrial linear motors has released a new component of its LinMot Designer software that can quantify just how energy efficient its solution is, and the sizeable return on investment their motors can provide over pneumatics.

Example Take an example within the handling and assembling sector. A linear actuation is required on the horizontal plane to move items through to the next stage of the production process. A single LinMot Linear motor with guide can replace a traditional 63mm diameter rodless air cylinder for this task, ultimately reducing annual energy cost by over 10,000 EUR and CO2 emissions by over 26,000 kg.

Taking this example in more detail, the project requirements of this example are as follows: •

Stroke  2 metres in each direction (4 meters per cycle)

Motion  Continuous reciprocating motion (8000h / year)

Time  3 seconds in each direction (6 seconds per cycle)

Moving mass  5kg

Load force  100N resistance in each direction The return on investment is significant. Energy saved by using a single electrically driven actuator over a basic traditional pneumatic cylinder has the potential to cover its higher initial outlay within a very short timeframe, typically less than a year. Combined with the extraordinarily long operation life of LinMot Linear Motors and the next to zero servicing requirements mean LinMot’s solution will continue working for years, improving the cost benefits and environmental efficiency of your production line by a significant margin. www.quin.co.uk/products/ linear-motors

High Contrast SWIR Lenses for Agricultural Sorting Resolve Optics is a leading developer and supplier of high contrast Short Wavelength Infrared (SWIR) lenses for agricultural sorting applications.

T

raditionally fruit, vegetable and grain sorting methods have relied upon visible inspection of parameters such as shape, size, colour, texture and defects to determine quality. Compared to visible light - SWIR’s shorter wavelengths enable images to be acquired with stronger contrast and higher resolution, which are both important criteria for agricultural inspection and sorting. SWIR is a proven technology for helping food and agricultural producers reduce waste, increase yield and improve quality by identifying bruised produce which can be identified and removed during the sorting process. In addition - SWIR is able to detect foreign objects such as stones and other foreign contaminants during sorting. For cost reasons, many off-the-shelf SWIR lens designs are based upon a standard visible lens with AR coating designed for the SWIR waveband. These lenses do not account for the way that glass transmits in the SWIR region and as such the final image quality can often be compromised. This problem is particularly apparent with the latest generation of higher resolution InGaAs SWIR sensors.

A bruised apple revealed using SWIR inspection

Working closely with manufacturers of agricultural sorting systems - Resolve Optics has a proven track record of custom designing SWIR lenses that optimise both the resolution and imaging contrast achievable with the product. The changing requirements of Fastenings in the evolving Electric Vehicle market BY SVEN BREHLER, DIRECTOR OF ENGINEERING, TR FASTENINGS The rapid acceleration of growth in the Electric Vehicles and associated products such as batteries and charging units has required a different approach. No longer does it take time to go to market as with conventional vehicle production. Instead “fast to market” is the byword as new and existing companies enter the market with the mindset that we are far more used to seeing in the Electronics and IT sectors. In conjunction with this comes technical challenges as new products are developed requiring different solutions that meet the stringent requirements particularly in the battery casings.

Where are fasteners used within the Electric Vehicle? TR’s Electric Vehicle animation details the areas within the vehicle where the fasteners are specified.

Watch our Hardware Solutions for the Electric Vehicle Industry animation here

Meeting the EV Battery challenge As you can see from our animation showing where fastenings are used, the new designs of the interior of the car are also changing. The latest “Skateboard” platform is the basis for many new electric vehicles, including people movers, delivery vehicles and buses. This new manufacturing concept cuts down on complexity and can be common across different vehicles and scaled easily. The modular, self-contained Skateboard designs can form the basis of multiple vehicles with minimum requirement for re-design. Much focus is placed on the load bearing structure, which integrates the battery pack and drive train. Interchangeability of various modules within this design allow the Skateboard and therefore new vehicle models to stay at the cutting edge of battery and drive train innovation. The interior of the vehicles is changing dramatically too, particularly within the cockpit. We are seeing many new concept designs which all require fresh thinking in terms of fastener applications. Fasteners are now also being used as a visual design

36|

feature, which you will see in new models with the manufacturers name stamped in the head. These need to be aesthetically pleasing, and the finish quality is critical for longevity. The increase of in-car technology e.g. IT connections with 5G and large IP console screens, and concept seating are challenging the conventional fixings, especially into composites. Correct fastener design and selection is key to the success of the modularity and design life of the Skateboard platforms, by strategically selecting serviceable fasteners where modules or elements will require maintenance or potential updating in future. Designing in reversible joining – bolt and nuts – does allow for a more economical - potentially automated - retrieval of undamaged individual components. The right selection of fasteners will also help meet eco-design criteria. This retains the maximum value at the end of a vehicles life and plays a part in the preparation of extended producer responsibility regulations, where they have to consider final responsibility for disposal of their manufactured products. Where appropriate, non-serviceable joints, such as moulded inserts and self clinching products can be designed in. TR’s engineering expertise has supported several companies to optimise design,

ENGINEERING PDATE

considering the ease of manufacturing, product cost and where possible considering lightweighting saving the use of mixed materials. One of the best illustrations of this has been the increasing use of composites in assemblies. Therefore, the need for product such as Compression Limiters which are designed to take the fastener load and provides a structural through hole without a risk of delamination, creep or stress cracking. Generally, these are produced in steel, stainless steel, brass and aluminium and designed and manufactured to exact specifications. There may also be a need for electromagnetic shielding requiring electrically conductive fasteners. The demands of the Circular Economy and meeting the recyclability of product is a strong consideration in any new design. At the end of the economic life of either the vehicle or mobile battery, there is the option to re-use or repurpose. The importance of the highest number of components capable of being recycled is a key factor and fastenings are no exception. Ease of disassembly for battery pack removal is an additional factor. Most of these challenges can be overcome or their effects reduced, with the right engineering choices. TR can provide support and delivery of suitable products. Rationalisation and standardisation of fixing methods and drive systems, such as hex lobular fasteners, which have a

similar torque capacity during assembly and disassembly can support automation. TR engineers can also share their experience in fastener positioning for easy access or help to select suitable materials or coatings to avoid fastener damage through galvanic corrosion. Often connectors, charging pins and busbar components are not considered as fastener products but they are part of a holistic product offering as their mating components. It is important that the entire assembly is viewed in the round to enable a better understanding of requirements. We have the capability to deliver thermal and electrically conductive products in copper, aluminium, brass. These can be tin, or silver plated - and if required, compliant with technical cleanliness requirements. We can also challenge designs, originally machined, to be partially or completely cold formed, increasing cost effectiveness and carbon footprint of the product. At the end of the economic life of either the vehicle or mobile battery, there is the option to re-use or repurpose. Unfortunately, not all battery technologies lend themselves for repurposing due to poor cycling performance. In other cases, the limitations are due to few available disassembly facilities or lack of batteries themselves to consider repurposing on a commercial scale. So, the consideration of assembly of new materials and their recyclability make for new challenges in this fast paced growth opportunity.

The crisis in the semiconductor market - symptoms, diagnosis, forecasts When the semiconductor shortage will end

I

• • • •

A semiconductor shortage - is it possible? The problem with semiconductors - causes The shortage of semiconductors in the automotive industry When will the semiconductor market stabilise?

t has been reported in the media many times, so you must have heard about it already, that the car manufacturers are unable to produce new cars due to the crisis in the semiconductor market. Modern cars are full of electronics but is it really bad enough to halt production? Does the semiconductor crisis only affect the automotive industry and is there no cure or at least a vaccine for it?

A semiconductor shortage - is it possible? One of the first symptoms of the crisis in the semiconductor market was the lack of GPUs. Allegedly, their production has been halted due to the shortage of GPUs. Everyone explained this situation with the growing interest in cryptocurrencies (processors built into graphics cards improve the work efficiency of cryptocurrency mining software), but it was probably not the only reason. The next to sound the alarm were car manufacturers. At the time, many people were rubbing their eyes in amazement - how come you cannot make a car, due to a lack of semiconductors? This situation was new, although not for everyone. Older people, who have been involved in the electronics industry

38|

for decades, can still remember the days of shortages, when, for example, production of a music kit was halted because the delivery of LEDs was late. Nowadays, before the crisis in the semiconductor market, such a situation was unthinkable, but in the past, it was not uncommon for huge plants to experience downtime because of shortages of all kinds of small components. The exemplary LEDs, on the other hand, were the main elements of the indicators, backlighting, and influenced the aesthetics and functionality of the product. However, such situations are now a thing of the past and we have certainly got over the shortage of raw materials for production. Especially if we are talking about those that are mass-produced in millions of copies. However, the truth is that if certain models of microcontrollers or GPUs were to disappear overnight, the production of TVs, tablets, smartphones, cars, high-end domestic appliances and other consumer devices would be immediately affected, as they are essential components of today’s user interfaces. In today’s world, with the mass production of components, it is difficult to understand the semiconductor shortage and the situation where supply does not keep up with demand,

that is, where no money is being made when there are huge profits to be made.

The problem with semiconductors - causes It is probably impossible to identify the single reason for the chip shortage and, for example, blame everything on the pandemic. The modern economy has a global dimension, which means that the situation in one country can have an impact on the situation in another. The same applies to large market players or suppliers of a rare commodity - their legal, political, or technical problems can affect economies around the world. For example, a rare snowstorm in Texas, which we saw a few months ago, prevented many American companies from producing, not only in the semiconductor industry. A Japanese semiconductor factory was closed for over a month following a fire. Samsung Electronics Co. warned of a “serious imbalance” in the industry, while Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. said it was unable to keep up with demand despite running factories at more than 100% of capacity. The US embargo on large Chinese component manufacturers meant that the plants there had to reduce production. We are talking, e.g., about SMIC, a major

ENGINEERING PDATE

October 2021

Chinese player in the semiconductor market, which is prevented by geopolitical factors from seizing market opportunities. It also seems that producers closing their factories during the quarantine period had somewhat underestimated needs. Production has been halted at many factories and the employees were on forced leave. Reduced demand has led to reduced supply, and it takes time and energy to turn the flywheel again. On the other hand, remote work has increased the demand for tools dedicated to it, such as laptops, cameras, tablets, modems, printers, etc. Automotive component plants have been able to switch to producing components for consumer electronics, for which demand has increased significantly. So, it is not surprising that when car production resumed, the component warehouses were empty. The semiconductor market crisis and the chip shortage appear to have resulted mainly from inaccurate demand forecasts during the pandemic in 2020. Many companies predicted at the time that people would start to cut down on consumption when times got tough. However, demand has proved to be Covid-proof. People, who were forced to stay at home, started spending their money on technological gadgets. They stocked up on better computers and larger displays to work remotely. They bought new TVs to watch movies or consoles to play video games. Children had to be provided with the necessary equipment for remote learning. People stocked up on coffee machines, advanced kitchen robots and other equipment to make quarantine life taste better. The pandemic turned into an online spending spree, which was supported by the biggest e-commerce players introducing special offers.

Semiconductor shortage in the automotive industry Car manufacturers were caught by surprise. They shut down their factories at the start of the pandemic when demand fell as showrooms were also forced to close. The interruption in production has slowed down sales of semiconductor chips, which are essential for today’s vehicles. At the end of last year, demand for cars started to grow. People wanted to move around, but due to the Covid risk, they did not want to use public transport. Car makers began reopening their factories and started to order components from chip manufacturers such as TSMC and Samsung. Unfortunately, it turned out that the factories were not able to meet the needs of vehicle manufacturers fast enough and the shortage of semiconductors in the automotive sector became a reality. Silicon wafer production lines, necessary for the production of semiconductor components, have become a bottleneck. The pandemic has generated so much demand for consumer electronics devices that semiconductor raw material manufacturing facilities are unable to provide enough material, e.g., for the production of LCD display drivers for computers, televisions and game consoles as well as new products where companies are starting to use screens and touch panels, such as refrigerators, heating and air conditioning appliances, sound equipment, etc. The difficult market situation concerns not only car manufacturers. It is worth noting that many well-known consumer electronics manufacturers have postponed the launch of new products. It is difficult to say how long this situation will last. On the one hand,

vaccination against Covid-19 is underway and more sectors of the economy are being opened, but on the other hand, the entire world suffers from serious shortages in raw materials, components, and manpower. To save the industry and the economy, countries are forced to use reserves and/or to print money. Extensive economic recovery plans are being implemented. As a result, inflation is rising and the value of money is decreasing.

When will the semiconductor market stabilise? It remains to be hoped that the business will recover fairly quickly and that electronic component manufacturers will address the semiconductor shortage. Officially, it is said that around July/August there should be no more supply problems. But what about until then? It seems that distribution companies that have stocks in their warehouses may be a solution for this issue. TME is one of those companies. TME has grown from a local distribution company to an international corporation that cooperates with numerous manufacturers from all over the world, not only with the largest and most important ones, but also with those who provide so-called niche products, specific for a given industry or application. Products from TME warehouses are delivered to almost anywhere in the world and the support network covers countries on every continent. Importantly, the company’s policy provides for quick delivery, which is possible thanks to high inventory levels. In the current state of the semiconductor market, the advantage of stocking niche products becomes all the more valuable.

ENGINEERING UPDATE

Industry 4.0-ready Flare Monitoring System for Gas Plants, Oil Refineries and Chemical Plants As regulatory pressure to monitor flares increases, so does the need for dependable pilot and flare monitoring instrumentation. Pilot flames are typically monitored with thermocouples, but these often fail unexpectedly due to thermal shock during flaring events. Generally, the failed thermocouples can only be replaced during a plant shut down, which means either the plant needs to be shut down to replace them or the pilot flames go unmonitored until the next scheduled shut down. When installed in parallel with thermocouples, Advanced Energy’s FlareSpection™ provides remote, system redundancy for pilot monitoring. This allows the plant to continue to operate by providing crucial pilot flame information to the plant’s distributed control system (DCS).

Among the value-added features of FlareSpection are: • Real-time thermal monitoring of multiple pilot flames and flares • Thermal camera operating in weather-proof stainless-steel housing complying with ATEX, IECEx, US and Canada certified explosion proof regulations. FlareSpection Thermal Image

Additive Manufacturing and Medicine When additive manufacturing (AM) and medical technology are discussed, numerous examples come to mind. The production of medical devices are perhaps the first examples, but AM is increasingly becoming vital in the production of implants and new prosthetic technology. The advantages of AM are mainly to be found in the production method. The technology allows for geometries and complex shapes that cannot be produced in any other way. As a result, cavities and special surface structures can be realized, while the process also allows much shorter production times than other manufacturing technologies.a One of the areas of application in which this flexibility can be put to good use in medicine is the manufacture of implants for use in the human body. Since implants must remain in the body for as long as possible, it is particularly important that legal quality requirements such as the ISO 13485 standard are met during production. The core claim of this ISO standard is that the medical products produced are safe for use in the human body as well as being effective. Orbital implants or even entire skullcaps can be created using AM. This ensures compatibility and long retention time in the human body and are usually made of titanium alloy Ti6Al4V – a completely biocompatible material. The implants

often have integrated grid and sponge structures which are easier to produce by AM. For moving parts, like joints or knee implants, Cobalt-Chrome can be used. In medicine, time is often a decisive factor. For example, if a cranial bone implant is required, it must be available to use on the patient as quickly as possible. Since AM eliminates the need for special tools, production can take place as soon as the manufacturer receives the CAD model. These days, implants that don’t need to be custom-made are increasingly being produced on-demand by AM. Take implants for use in the spinal column for example; since the number of variants is quite high, but the required number of pieces per variant remains low, it is more economical for hospitals to rely on AM for these implants. The required implants can then be delivered as needed and thus expensive storage costs are avoided by the hospital. AM is already an indispensable part of medicine, helping to improve or save human lives every day. And the possibilities and advantages that this technology promises to open up to mankind in the future is truly exciting.

INTEGRATED THIRD PARTY LOGISTICS RELIES ON STERTIL DOCK PRODUCTS TO SUPPORT 24/7 OPERATION One of the UK’s leading logistics companies relies on an installation of 32 loading bays from Stertil Dock Products to ensure the efficient loading and unloading of 160 vehicles every day. Based in Wakefield, Integrated Third Party Logistics (ITPL) provides comprehensive warehousing and storage facilities to support a number of companies and is a vital element in the UK-wide distribution of goods for a locally-based soft drinks producer. Vehicles arriving at the ITPL complex, which include 40 foot curtain sided and box containers, deliver and collect palletised loads with an average weight of one tonne per pallet. When originally constructed, the ITPL warehouse incorporated 16 loading bays featuring Stertil loading bay equipment. This original installation performed well in a demanding application over many years which led to the decision to install similar equipment to support a recent 14 bay extension to cope with increasing throughputs. The Stertil equipment installed within the new extension includes the latest generation of S-series swing-lip dock levellers. Providing a dynamic load capacity of six tonnes, these levellers automatically adjust to the changing floor height of the vehicle during loading and unloading operations, even if the vehicle is unevenly loaded. Stertil also supplied and fitted its W-series curtain dock shelters to ensure exceptional performance of the loading bays. These shelters combine sturdy aluminium frames and strong reinforced curtains to provide optimal sealing between vehicles and the warehouse building. The collapsible aluminium frame prevents damage from incorrect docking of vehicles and can be fully customised. Also, the lightweight shelters ensure easy installation whilst standard double guidance chevron markings ensure correct positioning of vehicles to the shelters. To complement the energy saving properties of the dock shelters, Stertil also installed insulated doors from its Thermadoor range. These doors offer a choice of insulation levels including higher value insulation for applications where temperature control

46|

is critical. Seals are located all round the door and between hinged panels to ensure the integrity of the insulation. All Thermadoor models incorporate a range of track configurations to suit different building layouts and available headroom. The doors may be powered or manually operated and offer a range of safety features including finger protection at panel-to-panel joints. All Thermadoor overhead models meet the requirements of EN 13241-1: 2003 and, based on this standard, doors are CE marked. Wind load tests and thermal resistance have been certified in accordance with EN 12424 and EN 12428 respectively.

Completing the range of Stertil dock products installed at the ITPL warehouse are L-shaped rubber bumpers which effectively prevent damage to the loading bay caused by reversing vehicles. “Based on the successful use of a range of Stertil products at our original warehouse, we were keen to have Stertil equipment installed to support our new extension,” says Dave Ellis, managing director of Integrated Third Party Logistics. “The installation was very smooth thanks to the professionalism of the Stertil engineers and, as expected, the new loading bays support our 24/7 operation perfectly.”

Murrelektronik enters the world of vision systems Murrelektronik expands its decentralised automation technology to provide new “Plug and Play” solutions for industrial image processing. Vision systems are becoming increasingly important in industrial manufacturing and logistics. When it comes to Industry 4.0 technologies, industrial image processing cameras are a crucial component. By developing its vision installation solutions, Murrelektronik now offers decentralized installation solutions specifically for industrial image processing. With Murrelektronik, machine and system builders have a powerful partner at their side when it comes to power supplies and signal/data management for the smart networking of cameras in industrial production processes or logistics. Murrelektronik’s decentralized components includes switches, distributors and feeders that can be mounted on the machine, as well as the corresponding high-performance cable and connector technology. These components minimize installation effort and maximize performance for both new and existing machines and systems.

Vision installation solutions from Murrelektronik (from left to right): The Xelity Hybrid Switch handles data communication and power supply, the Injection Box is a four-way power and signal injector with 24V, the Master Breakout Box distributes power and signals, and the NEC Class 2 Splitter is a pure power and signal distribution box. Picture: Murrelektronik GmbH

“Plug and Play” for vision systems Efficient power supply and reliable data communication are the pillars of a functioning installation concept. The goal is to combine a machine or plant’s devices into a system efficiently and economically. Murrelektronik's modular vision installation solutions allow you to integrate a decentralized installation concept into existing system architectures as well as new machines and systems. These components include the Xelity Hybrid Switch (which has connections for up to four cameras, handles smooth and error-free data communication), the Master Breakout Box (a power and signal distributor) and the Injection Box (a voltage and signal feeder). Each is designed to be mounted directly in the machine environment near the respective vision system. "Our decentralized installation concept has the unbeatable advantage that we save our customers the time-consuming and expensive control cabinet installation," says Simon Schlichenmaier, Market Development Vision Systems at Murrelektronik. "Switch cabinets can be made smaller." Another advantage, with Murrelektronik's modular plug & play solutions is that vision systems can not only be put into operation quickly and flexibly, but they also facilitate and accelerate function diagnostics during operation significantly reducing system and machine downtime.

Intelligence where it is needed Schlichenmaier: "With our vision installation solutions, we focus on the processes that take place between the camera and the system controller." Where industrial image processing was not possible in existing systems due to overcrowded control cabinets, Murrelektronik's vision installation solutions provide a remedy with shorter cables and less cable clutter. Thanks to a data transmission rate of 1 gigabit/second

48|

(Gbit/s) via X-coded cables, high-resolution image processing is possible for many industrial applications. Network communication takes place at up to 2.5 Gbit/s. "The data processing takes place at the machine. We bring the intelligence to where it is needed," says Schlichenmaier and adds: "With Murrelektronik’s vision installation solutions, our customers can trim their production processes to greater efficiency and higher throughput. As a result, they increase quality and avoid costly rework. And quite incidentally, we slim down the control cabinets."

EPLAN Platform 2022:

collaboration and partnership Ken Christie, country director for EPLAN UK, has already accompanied 13 new releases since 2008. But none like this: the EPLAN Platform 2022 has a completely new technical basis, a new design and many additional functions. He reveals more in the below interview. What was the reason for the further development of the EPLAN Platform 2022? For a long time, a complete overhaul of the software has been planned and being prepared by our development team. As we changed to a subscription model this year, it was a suitable time to implement other innovations. With the move to subscription, we’re strengthening relationships with our customers, and with an exchange and partnership-like cooperation, we get straight to the point with regard to software requirements. The new Platform has become more intuitive, more flexible, and overall, more productive. It is also integrated into a whole range of accompanying measures and solutions, such as our partner program and the developments in the cloud. In other words: it’s a complete package!

Let’s focus on usability. EPLAN Platform 2022 It’s in your hands!

52|

What do the innovations mean for the software users? That depends on whether we are talking to existing customers or new customers. Whilst existing customers can benefit from the optimised interface for better working, new customers can quickly

become productive with our software as it’s easy to use. However, to suit both existing and new customers, the intuitive interface is based on operating concepts that are well known to users, which offers a high recognition value. This can be seen in the integrated ribbon bars or the backstage view, which most

ENGINEERING PDATE

people are already familiar with from other established software products. Overall, this significantly improves user ergonomics. Users can also benefit from improved workflows as we have brought together all developments from over the

years in the context of “insert” with the new insert centre. This will mean new customers can start with little effort and existing customers will clearly see the advantages after a short period of getting used to it. Initial feedback from the beta tests indicates that this is correct.

What were the challenges during the development? Our solutions are not simply an ECAD system, but are often a kind of “backbone” for engineering and product development for companies. They are deeply integrated into the customer’s infrastructure and strategy and can be planned over years in terms of investment. This goes hand in hand with a huge responsibility. We really want to tailor our solutions specifically to the needs of our target markets. However, this will only be a success if we work very closely together and enjoy the trust of our customers. Eliminating the risk of Spurious Trip As process-based industries continually seek to improve efficiency, reliability and safety, a variety of equipment testing, and verification strategies have been introduced. One of them is the use of PST on ESDVs.

U

nfortunately, many operators choose not to utilise partial stroke testing capabilities on critical shut down valves because of the associated risk of a spurious trip occurring, however, the introduction of the Camtorc TripGuard system eliminates this risk allowing operators to get the full benefit of partial stroke testing implementation. The Partial Stroke Testing concept involves the operator allowing an Emergency Shut Down Valve to be moved over a small range in order

to demonstrate that the equipment is working normally. A major benefit is that testing does not require an operational shutdown, as the valve is only partially closed. However, Imtex Controls had observed a major flaw among industry players. While many companies have the ability to conduct PST on their valves, many choose not to do so. This is mainly due to occasions when testing led to complete closures of critical valves, resulting in plant shutdowns and multi-million production losses.

As health and safety requirements become increasingly strict, requiring proof that Emergency Shut Down Valve’s are fit-for-purpose, operators are faced with a difficult choice: plan a full plant stoppage to conduct testing or run a PST while production is ongoing, risking a plant shutdown?

The Solution Imtex Controls realised that a solution for this dilemma would involve a PST system that enabled ESDV testing without the risk of an unplanned complete shutdown. Such a mechanism would allow operators to fulfil regulatory demands as well as production goals. This solution was already present in the company’s own portfolio: Imtex’s engineering team combined the features of its Camtorc actuator and VSD controller with a simple controls system, the result was TripGuard. This system ensures that the Camtorc actuator is never fully vented during testing, leaving residual pressure to prevent the valve from closing completely.

How it Works The Camtorc TripGuard has 3 functional elements that work together;

54|

1.

Camtorc Pneumatic Spring Return Actuator

2.

Valvescan VSD Controller

3.

Dedicated PST Solenoid

ENGINEERING PDATE

October 2021

Camtorc Actuator The Camtorc Pneumatic Spring Return Actuator has two pressure pistons that operate independently of each other on the pressure stroke. With 2 supply ports, one piston (the spring piston) is dedicated to compressing the fail-safe spring in the actuator, whilst a smaller piston (body piston) is solely tasked with turning the valve. This has a significant advantage in limiting the rate of increase of torque output from the actuator as pressure increases (reducing valve stem sheer risk), but also allows for much greater control of the actuator on the spring stroke.

Valvescan VSD Controller The Valvescan VSD Controller acts as a test and diagnostic tool for the ESD valve, enabling verification of the capabilities of critical valves, without having to significantly modify existing operating methodologies. The VSD Controller integrates Position Feedback and Valve Control into one enclosure and works in conjunction with one or two solenoids (one of which can be the ESD solenoid) to deliver testing without affecting the ability of the Safety loop. Within the device’s highly flexible platform, the VSD Controller offers the ability to perform a Full Stroke, Partial Stroke or Solenoid Test, allowing detailed insight into the integrity of the Final Element in the Safety Instrumented System. In addition, the VSD Controller can be used to ‘harvest’ information during actual ESD events, enabling operators to take functional safety credit for every trip as well as gaining valuable operability information for use during maintenance shutdown.

Dedicated PST Solenoid The dedicated PST solenoid is a 3/2 valve with Universal porting to enable air flow in both directions when the solenoid is energised. It can be of any brand or port size.

Case Study Working with a leading offshore operator, the first TripGuard installation took place in collaboration with a specialist valve supplier to the oil and gas industries. The operator was looking for methods to gather data on shutdown valves in the wake of growing pressure from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE). However, ageing infrastructure meant that a comprehensive overhaul to meet HSE requirements was not possible or economically feasible. TripGuard proved to be a costeffective and simple solution for the proposed challenge, allowing the operator to conduct testing

and obtain data on critical valves without the need to modify existing plant infrastructure. A solution that is driving a scale up process at Imtex Controls, the company delivered three TripGuard systems for UKCS infrastructure, helping the company achieve a 10-15% revenue growth during the year. By minimising the risk of problems during testing, TripGuard is bringing higher safety to clients and mitigating production risk. About Imtex Controls A privately-owned engineering design and manufacturing company, Imtex Controls is a leading independent producer of advanced, high-integrity valve actuation, communication and control systems for the oil and gas (onshore and offshore), power generation, chemical and marine industries. www.Imtex-Controls.com

Bearings - H Rotating the World

Most of us would give little thought to the rotating blades of a turbine engine or a valve which allows chilled gases to flow through it at freezing temperatures.

owever, without bearings, many everyday procedures would quickly grind to a halt. Carter Manufacturing, a designer of bearings really do know their market when it comes to providing a rotational solution to a wide variety of applications. They are also expanding at a significant rate. With headquarters in Abingdon and recently added off ices in Spain & Minneapolis, there’s every likelihood that another will emerge in Shanghai. In the meantime, there’s the opportunity to promote the manufacturing brand, Unasis. This is where I stepped in with my camera, lighting equipment and industrial expertise. Having already completed two extensive photo assignments with Carter to promote the bearings’ applications and launch the new web site, the aim this time has been to demonstrate the work which goes into building bearings, testing them and the accuracy which they demand. New subjects featured on the shooting agenda, including the laser engraving

of the brand name Unasis onto the bearing itself for both metallic and ceramic bearings. This was quite a challenge ! Whilst the laser appears to draw the name onto the surface, it cannot be viewed unprotected with the human eye. With the need to black out the room and reduce all extraneous light, the exposure was a combination of a time exposure plus coloured flash. For those with a keen interest, the camera setting was ‘B’ and as usual, flash intensities were measured manually.

Newly added to the Unasis catalogue is the tensile tester for which they are currently creating numerous sets of tools. It’s a Whoppa ! We were fortunate to have the headroom to allow for photography in its entirety. The aim is to imminently build and launch a sister site which will feature the stages of bearing manufacture under the Unasis brand. With the two names now complimenting one another, the concentration will be on design, manufacturing

and distribution all supporting one another backed up with technical expertise. Hence, their revolutionary ideas are genuinely moving and with the support of visually striking images, they’re able to support industries relying on the everyday need to keep the wheels, shafts and cylinders revolving from factory to airstrip to operating theatre. www.carterbearings.co.uk Mel Meader Technical Operations Manager Carter Manufacturing Limited +44 1865 821 720 Mob 07859 879040 mel@carterbearings.co.uk www.photographyforindustry.com Photography : Adrian Waine Tel 0151 356 3855 adrian@photographyforindustry.com Ad r ia n w a s f o r m e r l y s t a f f photographer with Saudi ARAMCO & was regularly commissioned within the oil processing facilities of Saudi Arabia.

Snap-on Industrial’s Level 5™ automated total asset management system brings order to any workplace, enabling engineers and technicians to know exactly where to find every tool they need, when they need it, saving time and easing stress.

How useful would it be if all your workshop’s valuable tools could be tracked from one central point? Snap-on’s Level 5™ system makes that possible. It provides complete reports on everything managers or supervisors need to keep an eye on. They are even informed when a tool needs to be refilled or ordered. And then there’s FOD. The threat of foreign object damage is a real and present danger in many engineering workplaces. Using Snap-on Level 5™ minimises the risk of human error, as automated tool control constantly tracks every tool and detects which tools have been removed or returned, ensuring greater protection against FOD. Engineered to track individual tools by user, without bar codes, scanners, RFID tags or other add-ons, the system works at the speed its users demand. Other systems require additional steps to scan or log activity. The Snap-on system does this automatically so users save time and don’t have to depend on other steps to ensure accurate results. Snap-on’s Level 5™ ATC boxes are network ready, using either Ethernet or wireless connection. That enables users to review activity at all Level 5 boxes in their location from one central computer, avoiding the time consuming need to inspect each box.

60|

Major benefits of the system include: • No individual tool scanning required; • No RFID tags to install or replace; • No limitations on tool size: from ¼” screwdriver bit to just less than the size of the drawer; • Intuitive interface, with an easy to use touchscreen • Audible voice confirmation of tool removal and replacement • Automatic locking for maximum security • Errors announced and displayed to indicate incorrect tool position or advise when a drawer is not closed. Says Richard Packham, Director UK & Europe for Snap-on Industrial: “Snapon’s automated system takes asset management to an entirely new level. The ability to monitor several boxes from one central computer offers a huge advantage to engineering managers.”

A BREATH OF FRESH AIR

Today Artus Air Ltd. launches a new brand to market. Artus brings a new advance in air conditioning with a unit that combines the flexibility of a fan coil unit with the low energy of a chilled beam.

A

rtus represents a step forward in traditional Heating, Ve n t i l a t i o n and Air-Conditioning (HVAC) systems and offers a more sustainable and comfortable future for buildings and their occupants. This new innovation not only transforms the way buildings are cooled and heated but can also significantly reduce the amount of energy consumed and carbon generated. The impressive energy performance of Artus means that switching from a traditional Fan Coil Unit (FCU) to Artus has the potential to make a significant combined energy and carbon saving, translating to up to 89% on fan input power*. Using Artus Optima, Artus’ partnering control system, the technology could deliver all of a building’s HVAC Net Zero carbon reduction target**, and reduce its regulated energy and total energy by 21% and 14% respectively***. These figures are based on trial use of Artus Optima conducted in a 10,000m2 model office. This revolutionary new system is also a low cost solution; it arrives on site as a single component, significantly reducing the installation time. Artus negates the need for secondary ducts or grilles and is a self-access design which ensures it is easier and cheaper to maintain.

T h e d e v e l o p m e n t o f H VA C transformed the way we live and work, in terms of comfort and health, yet the original systems have remained relatively unchanged for circa 30 years.

The modular design of Artus allows it to be combined and integrated with a range of performance enhancing features, including acoustic finishes, lighting options as well as further thermal capabilities.

By employing advancements in mechanical and electrical technology, the designers at Artus have managed to create a product that is not only more compact and aesthetically pleasing but also offers more comfort, is quieter in use, and draught free with high precision temperature controls.

Now an independent company, Artus was originally developed as part of Arup’s Ventures programme, which was set up to commercialise innovative staff ideas.

Roger Olsen, Chief Technology Officer behind the Artus innovation said: “Artus came from a desire to have a ‘better tool for the job’ - a low energy, widely applicable HVAC system, which is easy to design, install and run.”

www.artusair.com *Comparing a fan input power of 29.07W for a ‘best in class’ fan coil unit with a specific fan power of 0.19W/l/s, to a fan input power of 3.19W for Artus delivering the same cooling at a specific fan power of 0.055W/l/s. **Referencing the UK Green Building Council’s ‘Paris Proof’ 60% energy demand reduction target for buildings to meet Net Zero, Artus can achieve a 63% reduction in heating, cooling and terminal unit energy use. Lifting Products to Manufacture GIS Crane Systems in the UK UK-based Lifting Products Limited will provide a full line of slewing jib cranes, light crane systems, and crane track from Swiss manufacturer GIS AG.

L

ifting Products will receive jib crane and other parts from Schötz, Lucerne, but will manufacture the range for the first time in the UK. GIS-owned Lift Turn Move (LTM), meanwhile, a supplier of lifting and rigging equipment to the industrial and entertainment event markets, will continue to be the UK supplier of its electric chain hoists, control systems, and additional material handling equipment. James Porter, formerly of LTM, and managing director at Lifting Products, had earmarked the UK as a potential hotbed for the full range of GIS products, but cited transportation costs as a barrier to entry for heavier equipment. However, the company has invested in infrastructure, primarily to facilitate onboarding of the GIS range of profiles and components for the jib crane and GISKB ranges. Over- and under-braced jib cranes will be offered from 125kg capacity at 2,000mm reach to 1,000kg capacity at 5,000mm reach. Customisations will be available upon request. The company’s first jib crane build was for installation at the Holywell, Flintshire facility for handling steel sheets from the rack to load a plasma cutter. The new computer numerical control (CNC) cutter allows Lifting Products to profile its own, 40mmthick steel plate—double the thickness of jib crane base plates. Subsequently, welding jigs were installed for repeat assembly processes. Manual and CNC lathes, a press brake, milling machine, and water-cooled welder are among other new tools that complete a stateof-the-art machine shop suite. Porter said: “The combination of Swiss-designed products, that have been in use in some of highest specification manufacturing plants for over 30 years, combined with UK manufacturing, provides a solid base to support our customers with. While these are new products for the UK

68|

market, they have been tried and tested for many years, and we can call on that know-how to provide a comprehensive offering to the UK domestic market.” Lifting Products partnerships Erich Widmer, sales and marketing manager / deputy managing director, at GIS, said: “with or UK subsidiary LTM and their long-standing focus on the supply of GIS electric chain hoists and travel trolleys we have a solid base in the UK already, but Lifting Products can now support that existing offering, aided by the infrastructure to stock, cut, weld and paint. It’s well known that the two companies work closely together and LTM will supply the GIS hoists to go with Lifting Products’ crane systems. The collaboration strengthens the GIS brand in the UK; customers benefit from being able to buy GIS-designed jib cranes and lightweight track systems, in addition to GIS electric chain hoists and trolleys.” David King, managing director at LTM, added: “This is a win-win situation allround, for GIS, LTM, Lifting Products and, most importantly, the customer and end user community. We have had great success providing [GIS] chain hoists to the UK market and, three years after GIS acquisition [of LTM], the partnership with our colleagues at Lifting Products continues its legacy here in the UK.” Lifting Products has, since inauguration in 2016, based its growth on highprofile partnerships. It initially serviced the UK and Irish market with Haacon equipment, focussing on off-theshelf and bespoke winching, jacking, and handling equipment for water treatment, nuclear, offshore, waste, and other specialist markets. This expanded to Haacon’s container lifting and levelling systems, principally in the military sector. Lifting Products is also agent for Koester winches and Wittler safety brakes and cranks, common in agricultural machine making.

Lifting Products Limited will provide a full line of slewing jib cranes, light crane systems, and crane track.

Porter said: “We are already stocking GIS parts and can react quickly to customer demands, which will likely come from automotive, aircraft, utilities, construction, rail, and manufacturing. There is a standard range, but almost every jib crane built so far has some custom work involved. The track systems are standard parts but, again, they need to be machined to exact customer specifications. We have manufactured over 30 jib cranes in the last four months and supplied several lightweight crane systems, which, prior to our official [GIS] launch, gives me great confidence.” Porter joined LTM in 2008, before setting up Lifting Products in 2016 but his relationship with GIS goes back further to employment with Chester Chain, where he used to service and install the Swiss-manufactured electric chain hoists. With around 120 employees, GIS AG of Switzerland is a well-known manufacturer of complete crane systems including hoists and vacuum lifters. The company has been developing and producing electric chain hoists for more than 55 years. Over the decades, numerous special versions have been realised to meet the needs of a wide range of market segments. With the current electric chain hoist models GP for industrial applications and LP for the entertainment industry, GIS has taken a pioneering role in the highly competitive market of lifting and handling technology. GIS hoists and crane systems are in use by the hundreds of thousands worldwide - stationary or mobile - indoors or outdoors.

Polished to a high gloss: SHL robot systems for surface treatment operate with MULTLINE ADAPTIVE + E multiple connectors from Eisele

SHL AG develops and manufactures individual designed robot systems that take charge of grinding, polishing, deburring and various other services, including loading and unloading or palletizing.

W

hile looking for the best possible connection at the interface between the pneumatic and the electrical components driving these workpiece-guided systems, SHL came across EISELE GmbH. The in Germany-based company has more than 80 years of experience with high-quality solid metal push-in connectors.

Modular kit system ensures flexibility The Eisele MULTLINE ADAPTIVE + E is a fully modular multiple and multi-media connector with adaptive inserts. The components, which have a round base body and consist of a plug and socket, are made of aluminum and are also available in stainless steel. They are modularly designed and can flexibly integrate various tube diameters, connection types and media such as compressed air, vacuum, gases, cooling water, liquids and even connectors for electrical and electronic cables in one interface. The adaptive inserts are available in nickel-plated or dezincification-resistant brass, as well as stainless steel, depending on the medium. The push-in connectors of this innovative and flexible modular kit system are mounted virtually without tools and allow a simplified and accelerated tool and format change. SHL is particularly fond of the fact that the Eisele MULTLINE ADAPTIVE + E let them combine the electrical signals and the pneumatics in one coupling. “It is essential for our plant engineering that we can use the multiple connectors to freely combine different nominal diameters. Based on the standardized M12 round connectors, there is a wide range of possible connectors and two M12 power Since the middle of 2015, SHL has been pairing their pneumatically operated workpiece grippers, which are equipped with a manual exchange system, with the MULTILINE ADAPTIVE + E kit system for multiple and multi-media connectors Photo: Eisele

plugs for the electrical supply with up to 630 V. Thanks to the plug concept behind this solution, none of the conductive connections need to be soldered or clamped. To our customers, this offers a substantial savings in time as these connections can be replaced quickly if in need of service”, reveals Bernd Schätzle at SHL. It is particularly important for SHL that the tube connectors are dynamically resilient to pull and pressure so that they can withstand heavy stress during use. Overall, the multiple connectors at the front end of the robots gives a boost to the robots’ flexibility and process reliability.

Safety first – maximum system safety The safety of SHL's high-tech robot systems is a top priority. And this is why one property of the multiple connectors is indispensable for the design of the system: As soon as robots and workpiece gripper are separated at the interface, the compressed air supply on both sides of the connector is automatically cut off thanks to the optional shut-off function in the adaptive inserts of the MULTLINE ADAPTIVE + E. This function is very important for us, because the gripper can no longer move after disconnecting from the robot. If air were to leak after uncoupling, the gripper could move and the workpiece might come loose, potentially resulting in accidents”, details Bernd Schätzle. Precision, good workmanship and maximum reliability these are the qualities that convinced SHL. Watch the video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pvpW1bPPn6U

SICK’s Master Data Analyzer Stops You Storing and Shipping Fresh Air

A

simple-to-use track-and-trace system that collects measurements and images of incoming stock or packaged goods and turns them into valuable Master Data is being launched in the UK by sensor manufacturer SICK with a free trial offer. The SICK Master Data Analyzer is already deployed at hundreds of retail logistics hubs worldwide capturing 100,000s of products every hour. Now UK operators are being given their first opportunity to see for themselves how easily the system records and integrates data into warehouse management and ERP systems. The SICK Master Data Analyzer is a Dimensioning, Weighing and Scanning (DWS) system with the option of associated image capture, supplied as an all-in-one static or mobile operator station. It promises significant returns on investment through more consistent track and trace of products, reduced packaging sizes, and space-saving efficiencies both during storage, and when loading goods for onward transportation. Says Mark Harris, SICK’s UK product manager for Systems & Auto Ident:

Threats to Cost-Efficiency “The greatest threat to both cost-efficiency and environmental performance in logistics, comes from storing or shipping fresh air because packages are oversized, or because they are stacked in bays or packed into transport inefficiently. Equally, the danger of the wrong, or incomplete, products reaching a customer can mount up to significant cost through returns or customer penalties. “Not only does the SICK Master Data Analyzer provide the data building blocks to eliminate these inefficiencies, it has also been shown to increase operator capacity by more than 20%. A study conducted with one major international retailer demonstrated a significantly reduced cycle time in inputting data of a wide range of Stock Keeping Units (SKUs) entering the customer’s facilities.” Unpack, set-up and connect the SICK Master Data Analyser to begin capturing the weight, length, width, height, image and the bar code of goods or packages in a single step. The trolley-mounted mobile version is powered by a rechargeable battery and transmits data via WLAN so it can be moved to the best location for efficient input of data.

Simple to Operate Simply place the item to be measured on the toughened glass weighing plate and use the hand-held scanner to read the barcode. Slide the Measuring Light Grid (MLG) frame across the object in either direction to reliably capture the dimensions. A consistently stable measurement is produced whatever the shape of the object, and even if it has a highly reflective surface, such as a foil.

72|

The system then merges the barcode, dimensions and weight into a single data string which is output immediately in a format that can be imported into any management software, such as an Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system. The SICK Master Data Analyzer can also be supplied with an IP Camera so that an image of the product can be associated directly with the object’s barcode, part number, or European Article Number. A correlating physical image of each SKU or package is saved in the system, enabling the shipper to check back to verify that the correct item was delivered, and identify any in-transit tampering or damage. The SICK Master Data Analyzer has a volume measurement accuracy of 2.5 x 2.5 x 2.5 mm and weight determination with an accuracy of ± 5g and can work to a maximum objects size of 800 x 600 x 600mm.

Free Trial Offer “Recording basic data accurately, consistently and quickly is the starting point of any efficient warehouse or logistics operation. Armed with these valuable Master Data building blocks, operators are better equipped to drive logistics processes more efficiently and save costs,” Mark Harris continues. “That’s why we are offering a one-week trial to any operator on a first come first served basis. We want customers to see for themselves how easy it is to start collecting Master Data. Whether you use one unit, or many across a site, we are confident you will begin to make cost and storage savings immediately.” For more information or to book your free trial contact Andrea Hornby on 01727 831121 or email andrea.hornby@sick.co.uk.

FAD Equipment Store Adds Crane Cameras FAD Equipment Store has become the first U.S.-based online supplier to stock Crosby’s range of BlokCam camera and alert systems for tower and mobile cranes. These advanced systems provide operators with critical visual and audio capabilities, direct from the crane hook to the cab, enabling safer and more productive lifting operations. BlokCorp, creator of BlokCam, was acquired by lead FAD Equipment Store vendor The Crosby Group this spring. The newlybranded Crosby BlokCam products are in stock and ready for shipment. The X2 and M3 systems have delivered clear enhancement of load handling in a number of sectors, most notably construction and renewable energy. The products, principally for tower and mobile cranes, were recently joined by BlokAlert, an audio / visual warning system to alert crane operators when workers are in harm’s way. David Ayling, president at FAD Equipment Store, said: “We are increasingly being recognized as a supplier of Crosby’s iconic range of lifting and rigging hardware. Adding its new cameras to a catalog that already includes Crosby Straightpoint’s stateof-the-art load cells, further validates our status as a supplier of cutting-edge product and technology.” The X2 was the industry’s first fully modular system compatible with tower cranes. It uses high-powered neodymium magnets and boasts a raft of features, including an auto-focus lens that always gives clear views of the load and surrounding area beneath the hook (HD 1080p resolution). Unlike other systems on the market, it also offers users audio from the sensor to the cab. Optional single and split-screen modes can be provided with additional cameras. The system can record on loop for up to 30 days. The M3, meanwhile, was the first fully modular camera for telescopic and mobile cranes, mainly because it can be installed in just five minutes. Many of the standout features of the X2 are carried over, while an all-in-one display combines the monitor, repeater and processor in a purpose-built, fast-fit system. The M3 has a HD display with built in speakers, automatic brightness

control, less than 0.2 seconds of latency and multi-voltage AC and DC inputs. BlokAlert is a wireless, audio-visual warning system that can be quickly and easily deployed to the hook block of a crane. When activated by the lifting crew, the BlokAlert receiver gives out a recognizable audio-visual signal that can be seen and heard by site personnel in proximity to the hook block or load. Ayling added: “Many regulating authorities are already looking at mandating crane camera systems and this is cultural change we want to be part of. Given the inherent benefits of camera systems and the ease with which they can be installed, we anticipate their wider utilization, even in the special transport sector—another industry where our products, such as tie-downs, are widely applied. It’s true that a vertical lift doesn’t have to be present for a camera system to deliver safety benefits. These cameras are perfect for any application involving

big, heavy, hazardous or critical loads, where an operator is working in the blind.” Headquartered in South Carolina, FAD Equipment Store puts lifting, material handling, safety and load monitoring products a click away from end users in warehouses, manufacturing, construction, oil and gas, renewables, commercial and other markets. DANFOSS SUPPORTS WIND POWER INNOVATION B ased in the north of Germany, Elegant Energy GmbH & Co KG is a small, but enormously innovative and capable company motivated by the belief that every human being has the right to clean and limitless energy. In support of this belief the company has developed Marlene, a new vertical axis wind turbine that is versatile, efficient, compact and cost effective. Central to Marlene’s design and operation is a high performance NXseries grid converter from Danfoss Drives.

As is the case with all wind turbines, the output voltage and frequency from Marlene’s generator varies with wind speed. To convert this output to the stable voltage and frequency needed to supply most types of load and to feed into the power grid, an inverter system, often known as a grid converter, is required. To provide a grid converter suitable for Marlene, Elegant Energy approached Danfoss Drives. By opting for a standard product rather than a specially developed custom grid converter, Elegant Energy eliminated development costs. Even more importantly, it gained the benefit of having a converter with proven performance and reliability which had already been type tested and shown to be fully compliant with relevant standards and regulatory requirements. For use in Marlene, which has an 8 kW generator, Elegant Energy chose grid converters from the Danfoss Drives NX family. These are available in a wide range of sizes with power ratings up to several megawatts, so scalability of the Marlene design is assured, should there be a demand for uprated versions to be used in areas with higher than average prevailing wind speeds. benefit is that, as a result of Danfoss Drives’ in-depth understanding of and forward-thinking approach to renewable energy applications, the NX converters have standard pre-programmed functions that Elegant Energy found extremely useful. “The prohibited frequency function has greatly simplified the design of Marlene,” said Kim van Wagtendonk, co-owner of Elegant Energy. “It meant we could eliminate resonance problems without incurring any additional costs, and it was exceptionally easy to use. All we had to do was to specify the upper and lower limits of the rotor speed band where resonance could occur – just a few minutes work to solve a potentially difficult and expensive problem!” Currently Elegant Energy is using its experience from the first Marlene to help prepare series production. First orders have been placed and international interest is even greater than expected. “Danfoss Drives has without doubt played a key role in the success of the Marlene project,” said Kim van Wagtendonk, “and the company has been a delightful partner to work with. Although we are a comparatively small operation, Danfoss Drives has always supported us unstintingly and enthusiastically, and whenever we have needed help or advice, the Danfoss team has provided a fast, accurate and helpful response. I would recommend Danfoss Drives to anyone working in the renewable energy field – it really is a ‘can-do’ company with great products and great people.”
