WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW EXERCISING WHILE YOU’RE

It’s always important to lead a healthy lifestyle and exercise regularly, especially when you’re pregnant. In fact, research shows that you should be taking part in at least 150 minutes of aerobic activity every week, which can be anything from walking to gardening.

However you decide to spend your time exercising, your pregnancy shouldn’t ever get in the way. Instead, try to take part in exercises that embrace your beautiful baby bump.

TIPS AND TRICKS FOR EXERCISING WHEN PREGNANT

Here are some of the things you should consider before heading to the treadmill or picking up some weights.

Consult your doctor before you start

To make sure you’re ready to start exercising, consult with your doctor and ask for professional advice. If you and your baby and healthy, there shouldn’t be any risks, but it’s always good to check as your body changes.

Let your routine adapt to your changing body

If you don’t feel like you want to exercise as intensely or regularly as you could before you became pregnant, that’s completely fine. It’s no secret that mothers-to-be can feel tired during this time, especially while you’re in your third trimester. So take it easy.

Start slowly and ease yourself into it

Just like anybody else, people that are pregnant should ease themselves into their exercise routine. Try not to head straight into your 30-minute run or full-body workout. Instead, start with shorter sessions while remembering to complete a warm-up.

Wear comfortable clothing

The secret to a successful workout is comfortable clothing. It’s normal for your feet and ankles to swell while you’re pregnant, so you’ll want to wear high-quality trainers if you’re exercising. The same goes for your sports bra and pants, making sure that your breasts and bump are supported.

Exercises that embrace your bump

Some exercises are better suited to people who are pregnant. Whether you’re a novice or an expert, learning these activities can help you stay healthy while embracing your bump.

Running

First and foremost, running is a great way to exercise while you’re pregnant. There is evidence to show that running can lower your blood pressure and reduce the risk of complications during pregnancy, such as preeclampsia and gestational diabetes

If you weren’t running before you became a parent-to-be, pregnancy is not the best time to start. And if you were a keen runner before pregnancy, don’t expect to run as fast during pregnancy. The bigger you get, the harder you will find it, so listen to your body and only run at a comfortable pace.

Swimming

If running isn’t for you, swimming is perfect if you’re looking for another aerobic exercise. Spending time in the water can help you stay healthy and improve your blood circulation, and it can even ease morning sickness.

There’s nothing to suggest that swimming is bad for you while you’re pregnant. Chlorinated pools aren’t known to harm your baby, but you might want to take a look at the bacteria levels and water temperatures of going into public swimming pools.

Yoga

If you’re eager to relax and recharge, yoga might be the perfect form of exercise for you. But it isn’t all stretches and breathing. Yoga can help you tone and build muscle all around your body, including pelvic exercises that can help you to deliver your baby a little easier. You just have to avoid hot yoga and any asanas that involve lying on your back, as this can limit the flow of blood and oxygen to the baby.

What to avoid as your due date approaches

There are a million and one things to think about when you’re pregnant. As well as preparing for your child and collecting all of the newborn essentials

14 Fitness & Beauty Update

KNOW BEFORE YOU’RE PREGNANT

you’ll need, think about certain exercises you should avoid as your pregnancy progresses.

Medical professionals advise that you should avoid lying on your back for a long period of time, especially if you’re over 16 weeks pregnant. You should also avoid contact sports, such as kickboxing or rugby and horse riding, and take a break from scuba diving or fitness programmes that take place 2,500m above sea, as this can cause altitude sickness.

These are some of the things to keep in mind if you want to start exercising while you’re pregnant. This is a beautiful time in your life, and although everything around you might be changing, you can still continue to lead your life exactly how you wish to. And if that means meeting with your friends for a weekly Pilates session, so be it.

This month, Philosophia Botanica’s revolutionary Meridian Flow Golden Facial and exclusive skincare range make their debut at the UK’s first Heavenly™ Spa by Westin, set in the newly opened The Westin London City.

For the very first time, guests are able to enjoy this luxurious facial treatment in the UK, in the tranquillity of London’s new city centre sanctuary. Jenny Jones, Spa Director at the Heavenly™ Spa by Westin, says “we’re excited to be partnering with Philosophia Botanica and are proud to offer our guests something they can’t get anywhere else in the UK. The Meridian Flow Golden Facial elevates the luxury facial to the next level with truly astounding results”.

Created by Chinese Medicine practitioner Francesca Canzano-Franklin, the treatment is inspired by a fusion of African botanicals and Eastern traditional techniques. The Meridian Flow Golden Facial plumps the skin, promotes vitality, defines, sculpts and lifts at a cellular level. During the facial, a fusion of adaptogenic botanical oils is used in conjunction with a gauss micro-stimulator, magnetic pen and a copper gua sha sculpting spoon to gently stimulate the skin and its sub-dermal layers.

Gold coated micro-magnetic pearls are then carefully applied to the meridians and acupuncture points of the face, to stimulate tissue activity, increase microcirculation and oxygenation, reduce the depth of wrinkles and plump the skin. This blissful and one-of-a-kind fusion encourages the natural production of elastin and collagen to maintain healthy skin and stimulate the flow of blood, lymph and qi to the face, head and neck. Not only an incredible treatment from an aesthetic perspective, the expertly crafted holistic facial also incorporates facial mapping based on Chinese medicine, meridian balancing, magnetic energy matching, acupressure stimulation and a bespoke facial massage ritual created by Philosophia Botanica’s founder.

Francesca Canzano-Franklin started Philosophia Botanica in Cape Town. She says, “I was inspired by the indigenous flora of the Cape, the wilderness of the African plants and botanical oils, the magnificent nature surrounding the Atlantic Ocean, as well as eastern traditional techniques and Chinese medicine. I wanted to create something in the holistic space that is truly uniqueand thus the Philosophia Botanica and Meridian Flow Golden Facial were born”. All ingredients used across the range are

100% natural and free from parabens, artificial colours, mineral oils, silicone, and any animal raw materials.

This innovative facial treatment isn’t just about beauty and wellbeing - there is ancient wisdom and true meaning behind the brand. Philosophia Botanica is made from a variety of ecological sources around Africa. Each source promotes traditional plant-based knowledge and represents an inspiring story of organic agriculture, sustainability, and the preservation of botanical culture. Philosophia Botanica strongly believes in supporting sustainable agriculture, particularly within Africa, to promote local economic development for generations to come.

The Heavenly™ Spa by Westin is open daily from 9am – 9pm. The Philosophia Botanica Meridian Flow Golden Facial is priced from £170 for a 90 minute treatment.

CUT YOUR HAIR SHORT BUT FEEL RESTRICTED? TOP TIPS IF YOU’RE LOOKING TO INVEST IN HAIR EXTENSIONS

This year short hair has dominated, with women showing no fear in cutting their locks. According to Google data, search for the ‘mixie’ cut (pixie and mullet) has risen by 1,500 percent in recent months, the ‘bixie’ cut (pixie and bob) by 156 percent and ‘French bob’ by 84 percent. However, while the bob is predicted to be huge in 2022, making the chop can be a big decision, especially for those who have long locks.

So, what do you do if you miss the versatility that comes with having long hair? Well, the secret is to invest in a set of hair extensions.

Here, Nicole Petty, Hair Extension Specialist at Milk + Blush shares her top tips for anyone who’s made the chop but isn’t quite ready to wave goodbye to long-haired life just yet and wants to invest in some extensions.

DO YOUR RESEARCH

Before committing to a set, consider what type of extension you are going for. For example, clip-in hair extensions are the best option for a quick fix, as they are easy to maintain, clean and take-off, while tape extensions are a more permanent yet natural-looking low-maintenance option.

Quality is crucial, too, if you want them to last a bit longer. Synthetic hair might be cheaper and look shinier, but will most-likely get tangled easily and not hold styles or textures. Remy – human hair with the cuticle still intact – which is slightly more expensive, will last a lot longer, blend better and be easier to style.

And it’s important to opt for the right length and colour to suit you. Lengths generally range from 12” to 24” inches – with 12” or 16” the recommended for anyone with short-mid length hair. Meanwhile, most suppliers provide a shade matching service, where you send in a picture of your hair in natural light to allow the experts to provide the best match possible.

FIT THEM IN PROPERLY

To avoid any mishaps, you’ll want to add a thicker set of extensions of 200-280g worth of hair, to transition from shorter to longer hair seamlessly.

After fitting your extensions, the section of hair at the nape of the neck will be the most prominent, particularly for those with short,

18
Milk + Blush

blunt hairstyles. To avoid the choppy extension look, conceal this shorter, bottom layer of hair by plaiting the hair flat against the nape of your head and, if it’s too short, twist the hair and pin it or tie it into a small bun. You can then begin clipping your first weft to this pinned section and work around the head, section by section.

To create a perfect blend and conceal any bluntness, double up on wefts by stacking and layering them on top of each other around your head, no more than two at a time and clipping them to enough hair to hold the weight comfortably.

Finish by adding texture with waves or curls for a seamless blend after you’ve clipped the extensions into your hair.

TAKE CARE OF THEM

To keep extensions in tip-top condition, brush them regularly using a soft brush, starting from the tips in a downwards motion - never from the top.

When it comes to keeping them clean, we advise against washing our clip-in wefts. Instead, use a spray like RemySoft Daily Refresher – the spritz coats the hair in silicone which replenishes them similarly to how your natural hair oils soften your hair.

If you do decide to wash them on the odd occasion, use a sulphate free shampoo and avoid scrubbing too hard. Rinse thoroughly before blow drying on low heat or air drying all of the wefts on a flat surface and gently pat away excess moisture from the hair using a microfibre towel.

Always make sure you store your extensions in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and that they are completely dry when you put them away - this will prevent any nasty mould or bacteria from growing.

Holland & Barrett Backs london Based Floe oral care to tackle gum disease via salivary Biomarkers

Floe Oral Care, the oral healthcare business dedicated to improving oral and systemic health by means of a direct-to-consumer subscription, has secured £350k from a group of high profile investors including Holland & Barrett, Lord Mervyn Davies, Tim Farazmand, Professor John Deanfield CBE, Sir Nigel Rudd, and Julio Bruno. Existing shareholders Stephen Welton, Dr. Jose Navarro, and Charles Southey are also following on.

Founded by Anglo-Spanish duo Will Welton and Javier Navarro, Floe is an online subscription service on a mission to address the UK’s ‘dental care timebomb’ by building a preventative routine for consumers and providing vital insights into undetected gum disease.

Will Welton, Co-founder at Floe Oral Care said: “If your mouth is the gateway to your body, then protecting it requires not only using the right products but also visibility of what condition your gums are in. The impact of gum disease is significant, and the prevalence of periodontitis has barely changed over the last 20 years. Our mission is to build a service that both tracks and improves oral and systemic health. We want to encourage a pro-active relationship with dental care by capturing and contextualising oral health data, and are thrilled to be bringing on board a fantastic group of investors from business and healthcare as well as an excellent and highly relevant corporate partner. This is a great platform for the next stage of our development”

Periodontitis is now the sixth most prevalent disease in the world, and according to research led by The Economist Intelligence Unit (IEU), costs the UK £6.4bn a year in treatment. Nearly half the adults in the UK have some form of periodontal disease, which has increasingly been shown to raise the risk of serious health conditions including cardiovascular disease and diabetes. Its awareness has remained low however amongst the general public and other health professionals - it’s often referred to as a silent killer - with the study showing that three out of four adults with periodontitis do not know they have the condition at all.

“H&B are committed to making health and wellness a way of life for everyone, and to supporting early-stage innovation in wellness as part of our strategy. Recognising that effective oral health management can disproportionately impact an individual’s overall health and wellness, coupled with our interest about the potential of diagnostics, makes Floe very exciting for us. We look forward to working with Will, Javier and the team at Floe to optimise the way we manage our oral health and improve lives.”

Floe is building a data driven approach, designed to cast light on untreated periodontitis and put the right measures in place to improve it. The service will track gum health via proprietary at home saliva testing whilst delivering essential products to support your oral health. Floe launched their core dental kit in August 2020, delivering their own unique toothpaste formulations (Dusk and Dawn), an ultra-soft toothbrush, and charcoal dental floss, delivered every three months to improve preventative habits in a more sustainable way. The products are all built with the environment in mind, including a freereturns service collecting used products for specialist recycling when subscribers’ new boxes arrive.

20 Fitness & Beauty Update
“We now understand the big impact oral health can have on important diseases in the rest of the body. This underpins a new opportunity to benefit from a change in approach to oral health – I am excited to be joining Floe to help address this.” Professor John Deanfield CBE

Investment: Holland & Barrett leads £350k pre-seed round to develop digital biomarker tech and grow the team

Need: Nearly half the adults in the UK have some form of undetected periodontal disease which is increasingly linked to systemic health issues - Floe is addressing this.

Opportunity: In the UK eliminating gingivitis would save £30bn over the next ten years and Floe are looking to benefit over 400k users by 2027.

Julio Bruno, CEO of Time Out Group plc, will be joining the board as a Non-Executive Director whilst Stephen Welton, founder and Executive Chairman of BGF, the UK’s largest growth capital investor, will remain as the Chairman. Professor John Deanfield CBE joins Floe as Chief Medical Officer, to put together a world leading Advisory Board to inform the strategy of the saliva testing and future healthcare products. Professor Deanfield is one of the leading cardiologists in the UK and has published several papers on the linkage between oral and systemic health.

Leighton Denny Nail Serums for Healthy Nails

Active-Build Serum and Hydra-Flex Serum

NOW available at Marks and Spencer

Leighton Denny believes in treating nails like skin –understanding your nail type and using prescriptive solutions to treat them accordingly. This ‘skincare for nails’ philosophy lies at the heart of the Leighton Denny brand – targeted, non-invasive formulae that are naturally kind to your nails and the planet. Healthy nails, like a healthy body, are hydrated, strong and supple. But loss of moisture, flexibility and durability can occur at any time – causing you to develop brittle, dry, damaged nails, or alternatively soft, weak, fragile nails, both of which require a specific, prescriptive treatment - the ‘one product fits all’ mantra doesn’t apply to nails... But Leighton has the answer with his targeted ‘skincare for nails’ serums – and now

these vegan nail miracle workers are available at Marks and Spencer!

BRITTLE, DRY, DAMAGED NAILS?

Leighton Denny’s HydraFlex Nail Serum (£14 / 12ml) is the answer to top up on vital moisture and to help hydrate, condition and improve nail flexibility. And you will know if you need it - the nail is stiff, has little flexibility, snaps and breaks easily. The surface looks dry, dull and the top layer of nail may flake. It has ridges and may also crack and flake down the line of the ridge.

The Hydra-Flex Nail Serum works to directly treat brittle, dry, damaged, flaky nails with a unique complex of vegan, active ingredients; Biotin – to help prevent nail thinning and smooth the surface, Pro-Vitamin B5 – to help

improve flexibility and strength, Cystine, Caffeine, Lecithin, Rosehip Oil and Vitamin E. As well as a delicious blend of Essential Oils - Petitgrain, Lemon, Lime, Orange, Bergamot, Cardamom, Ginger, Clove.

Apply a little serum (one pump is enough for five nails) onto each nail and massage into the nail, cuticle area and sides of the nail, until fully absorbed. Nails will instantly look and feel smoother and healthier but for best results use before bed as part of your daily routine.

to build up the nail and improve strength. You will know you need this if the nail is soft, fragile and weak. It bends and splits easily. It may peel in thin layers. It has no ‘body’ and can’t withstand stresses and strains.

The Active-Build Nail Serum helps to strengthen nails and restore moisture balance so they can grow stronger and longer with a unique treatment complex of vegan, active ingredients; Bio-Active Glass - to help build and strengthen damaged nails, Keratin – to strengthen and toughen nail protein, Myrrh Extract – to condition and improve nail tissue, Argan Oil – to help strengthen the nails and prevent nail thinning, Calcium, Horsetail Extract and Vitamin E. As well as a delicious blend of four Essential Oils - Aniseed, Bergamot, Sweet Orange Oil, Sumatran Benzoin.

THIN,

WEAK, FRAGILE NAILS?

Leighton Denny’s Active-Build

Nail Serum (£14 / 12ml) is the answer – it’s the nail equivalent of an athlete’s nutrition programme

Apply a little serum (one pump is enough for five nails) onto each nail and massage into the nail, cuticle area and sides of the nail, until fully absorbed. Use before bed as part of your daily routine.
