De-carbonisation – are ‘energy islands’ a major part of the answer?
DE-CARBONISATION – Are ‘Energy Islands’ a Major Part of the Answer? Chris Goggin of Rinnai looks at the advent of energy islands which look set to be a major part of the drive to decarbonisation in both the international arena and the U.K. ecarbonisation of the industrialised world’s fuel supply is acknowledged as being the over-riding priority in tackling climate change. Industry and governments across the globe are currently working on advanced plans to alter the composition of fuel to ensure a carbon free future.
D
This requires a diversification of fuel production and distribution which does not impinge on fuel supplies that allow the global economy to operate and grow. On mainland Europe in countries such as Germany, France, and Italy there has been a surge in demand and production of renewables. Denmark has heavily invested, both financially and ethically, in the idea of purpose built ‘energy islands’, floating in either international seas or the territorial waters of sovereign countries. An energy island is easily explained. It is a manufactured “island” designed with the purpose of generating and distributing power through renewable recourses situated and gathered out at sea. The concept of a floating island or, “Ile Flottante” was first recorded and introduced by Commander Philippe Tailliez of the French Navy in the early 1950s. Early designs were set in tropical waters and consisted of a collection of interlinking hexagons. Dominic Michaelis, an Anglo-French architect and structural engineer was one of the first advocates
of Energy Islands. He explained that each hexagon is: “made up of six equilateral triangles of 300-metre-long sides and would have a longest cross distance of 600 metres and the shortest cross distance of 520 metres. Its area would be 234 000 m (2), or 23,4 hectares. Its size would guarantee its stability in heavy seas.” This structural configuration also offers the possibility to follow a cluster or linear plan. Energy islands, said Michaelis, will produce and distribute energy that stems from four separate avenues: Wind Energy which will vary site to site. However, considering wind conditions off land, maximising wind energy should not pose a problem. 6 mills at varying heights
spread across a 600-metre platform should be able to generate 18MW at peak. Sea Current Energy is site dependent but utilizing specifically designed enabling technology can generate between 2 and 10 MW. Wave Energy is better suited to deeper, rougher seas. The average wave energy profile of the North Sea is 50kW compared to 15kW in tropical waters. Wave energy has the ability to contribute 6MW. Solar Energy is the last natural source that can feed the energy island. In terms of production, it is also the most active. A wide range of solar collection systems can be considered for use. “Power Tower” operations in tropical latitudes can generate collection efficiencies of 75% and produce a secondary conversion ratio to electricity of 40%.
To put this energy generation into perspective it has been cited that by multiple sources that 1mw could power anywhere between 400 and 700 homes.
An additional and smaller energy island is also being planned off Bornholm in the Baltic Sea, to the east of mainland Denmark, which eventually will produce 2 Gigawatts of cleanly sourced power.
estimate that over a period of 15 years the North West Wales regional economy could receive up to £2.5 billion with extra employment accounting for 8.6% of Anglesey’s expected GDP (Hall, Gareth).
A separate system dealing in Hydrogen conversion will also be designed and situated on each energy island. A hydrolysis plant is required to produce Hydrogen, another source of green fuel which can be produced via electricity generated by wind out at sea. D. Michaelis further adds: “Although some of this generated power will be used as electricity, a large proportion can be transformed into hydrogen fuel by electrolysis, with an efficiency ranging from 80 to 90%. Hydrogen is a clean fuel, combining with oxygen when “burnt”, to give water or water vapour as its by-product, creating no atmospheric pollution, and therefore considered by many as the Fuel of the Future.” (D. Michaelis).
This project will prove to be the biggest construction project undertaken by the Danish government with initial estimations amounting to around £24bn.
Man-made energy islands possess the capability of syphoning off natural recourses to transmute into domestic and commercial power through a range of innovative and diversifying practises; the generation of electricity, hydrogen and oxygen is produced in quantities vast enough to power entire countries with fuel that does not cause levels of harm to the planet.
Denmark has begun planning on installing two artificial energy islands in the North Sea which will triple the country’s current installed wind capacity. The main energy island under planning will produce and provide 3 Gigawatts of energy rising to 10 over time. An area situated 80 km (50 miles) west off the coast of Jutland has been identified as a prime location for its wind and rough sea.
Its projected size will be the equivalent of 18 football pitches – 120,000sq m. Further plans to expand its size by 300% are being discussed by the relevant parties. This site will provide the floor space to accommodate 200 giant offshore wind turbines which will work with the coastal wind to power 3 million households. Green hydrogen will also be mass produced. The Danish state will claim 51% of the ownership of the energy island leaving free a sizable percentage which is hoped to attract private financial investment. The Danish climate minister, Dan Jorgenson, has recently been quoted referring to the idea that Denmark could produce too much energy to use themselves, opening up the possibility that neighbouring countries could also benefit. Two smaller UK energy islands are currently being discussed: one in Cornwall, the other in Anglesey. Both are hoping to generate cleaner forms of fuel production for domestic and commercial use, as well as provide a scope of extra vocational options made available through new industry. A case study carried out by researchers at the Major Energy Delivery Programme
The installation and maintenance of energy islands will create new innovative industries and job opportunities that will aid further expansion of the local economies. If Denmark’s approach proves successful, energy islands will become a primary source of greener fuel production and economic growth. 12mm Magply serves as fireproof sarking for newbuild thatched propertya Widely specified for its fire resistance and all round stability in the cladding build-up to apartment blocks as well as a render backer and sheathing board, IPP’s highly versatile Magply boards have been employed by a regional developer as a fireproof sarking board beneath traditional thatched roofing for a development in a beautiful Dorset village. he 12mm thick version of the high performance MgO material was selected by Poole based Charlew Developments, to comply with the project architect’s performance specification for the solitary thatched roof building on a nine house scheme in the village of Owermoigne, near Dorchester.

and the exterior to the four bedroom dwelling also includes panels of flintwork between the bands of handmade brick which form the window surrounds. The thatch was installed by specialist roofing company, RV Miller from Keynes Wareham in Dorset. The overall roof construction saw the 12mm Magply boards being nailed down across the main rafters and covered by a breather membrane before battens were secured in the conventional manner, running across the pitches. The authentic reed thatch was then laid up the pitch and shaped around the eyebrow dormers at the roof edge and verges.
The site agent for Charlew Developments, Jules Peach, commented: “The project architects, Anders Roberts, specified the use of a one hour fire resisting board to be installed beneath the thatch covering.I researched a number of different board types before talking to our merchant, Travis Perkin, which recommended the Magply product. We have found the boards very straightforward to cut and fix before covering them with the breather membrane and battens.” Backed by BDA Agrement certification, Magply MgO boards present a fire-safe and environmentally friendly alternative to conventional plywood or OSB products. Additionally, the unique production process keeps the chloride content to just 0.01%, enhancing both stability and long-term durability. The different thicknesses of panel are also widely used as a substrate board for flooring and flat or pitched roof build-ups as well as render systems. www.magply.co.uk
Why You Should Discover Your Nearest IPG Member Store Today…. The IPG was founded in the summer of 2013 by Robin Beal, when he identified there was a real need and an opportunity to strengthen and support independent businesses. It is now the largest and fastest growing membership group for plumbing, heating, and bathroom specialists, with a network of well over 100 suppliers and 200 member locations nationwide.
I
n line with its stated vision of “supporting independents,” the group strives to make life for the independent as easy and as successful as possible, whilst enabling members customers to buy the best brands locally at great prices. Some of The IPG’s members share their experience of being part of the group: Dorchester Plumbing supplies joined in October 2014, they liked the idea of being part of a group which was specifically set up for the smaller independent business and liked the ‘stronger together’ ethos. Dorchester’s customers also recognise the advantages of the business working alongside The IPG and are very positive about the many benefits it provides them, including competitive pricing with unrivalled service and advice. Steve Rolph said, “Working with the IPG gives us a voice that is heard a lot more clearly by our customers and a presence that is noticed”. WMI Simpsons situated in Finchley, London, joined the IPG in 2015. As a familyrun supplier of heating and bathroom products, Justin Protheroe, Sales Director was impressed with the passion the group demonstrated towards the independents. Recently, one of his customers commented on a favourable price that Justin was able to offer him saying that “it’s a better price than I can buy it elsewhere”, Justin responded that it was because he was part of The IPG, who negotiate with suppliers on behalf of all their members to get favourable prices that he can pass on. ASE Plumbing & Heating Supplies is a well-established family-run and owned business that first opened its doors in 1988. Director, Adam Pearce, explains how The IPG has played a major part in its success story. “Over the past seven years, we have benefitted from several IPG strategies and initiatives, such as networking opportunities, marketing ideas and joint campaigns. The financial and business support The IPG has provided, has been second to none. The group has also helped improve our online presence by providing us with a website that is easy to update from the
IPG portal and is well supported by suppliers with offers and banners. The profile of the independent merchant has been raised massively thanks to The IPG. The scale and strength that can be achieved together has only been highlighted through being a member.” JCA Plumbing and Heating Merchants based in Southend on Sea are a new member, joining in November 2020. Howard Slowley was attracted by the support The IPG could offer his business; and wanted to be all in on the marketing initiatives available from the start. He promptly started working with The IPG team on a dual branded website and store in December 2020, in the belief that this will benefit his business and his competitive offering to his customers. “I am positive about the future now I am a member of The IPG. The group has already supported my business in creating a new brand identity, new store signage and we are working together on a dual branded website, as our relationship develops, the only way is up.” - Howard Slowley. Central Plumbing and Bathroom Supplies in Knowle also joined the group at the end of 2020 and have similarly jumped in with two feet - dual branding their store and website. They are looking forward to a bright future. Scott O’Neil enthuses “We have new members of staff coming on board very soon and new displays being installed so with the market ready to explode, I am very positive that our business will thrive in 2021 and beyond and I’m sure together we can succeed.” So, in summary, why should you discover you nearest independent IPG member today? They have unique advantages that cannot be found in more larger operations, they have exceptional product knowledge, are willing to go that extra mile to support their customers, can offer the best brands at great prices and most importantly, they have the human touch.

Concrete House from Raw Architecture Workshop
The raw surfaces of concrete walls, steel industrial fittings, leather antiques, and personal treasures change in colour and contrast depending on light levels, adding depth and texture to their surroundings. Concrete House is the first building in the world to be built of advanced Fibre Reinforced Concrete, a durable anticracking material developed by Cemex and tested for thermal and structural properties by the University of Zurich. The concrete’s fibre composition means it does not require reinforced steel bars to strengthen or hold the structure, making it the first concrete building in the world to be built without rebars in the walls. Elevation Concrete House was designed by RAW Architecture Workshop for Adrian and Megan Corrigall and their young family. A lover of concrete since his youth spent skating around Glasgow car parks, Adrian was also influenced by brutalist icons such as the Barbican, the National Theatre, and architect Louis Khan’s use of light to draw occupants through spaces.

BT1 Ultimate Bathroom Sealant & Adhesive TRIBRID® Technology. Made in Britain No More Mould or Fungal Growth CT1 who lead the way in research and development have pioneered the latest technology for the building industry over the last 18 years. The first to introduce a hybrid sealant almost 18 years ago, pioneered the way forward with a new era of sealants. CT1 showed the industry that you only need one tube for most applications with the correct raw materials and formulation. This new technology presented itself in a tube CT1. CT1 created a formulation with no solvents, allowing CT1 to perform under any difficult conditions, even under water. CT1 can guarantee that it will never shrink or crack, so it will not lose its bonding and sealing capabilities over time. Realising that hybrid formulations would be soon dated with old technology, as demands increase in what we expect from products and with the building industry producing more complex builds. CT1 was proactive rather than re-active. Introducing TRIBRID® technology. Another new era of sealants and adhesives. Now three times stronger, longer colour retention and elongation, TRIBRID® CT1 can’t be matched or compared to again for a long time. CT1’s technical field team also realised that in today’s current conditions people are demanding much cleaner environments and surface areas. Using the correct sealants and adhesives in installations and repairs is key keeping a surface area healthier. BT1- The Ultimate Bathroom Sealant and Adhesive was created as most sealants over time will allow bacterial and fungal growth. Some will grow quicker than others. The bathroom
can be a contaminated area, with heat, fluids and lack of UV light. BT1 based on the revolutionary TRIBRID® formulation, was created to prevent fungal and bacteria growth happening over long periods of time. This unique formulation makes it impossible for bacteria or microbes to form on the surface, and with almost zero indoor emissions, makes this the heathiest choice for your home. But what became apparent after vigorous testing was that using BT1 would reduce the risk of MRSA, E. Coli and campylobacter. Reducing bacteria by 99.99% and being able to retain its clinically clean white appearance is now proving to be the only sealant and adhesive being used by Hospitals, Aged Care Facilities, Clinics, Schools, Universities and Public Buildings. Solihull Hospital in Birmingham and Good Hope Hospital in Sutton to name a few have used and will only use BT1. BT1 - which can also be used in kitchen installations, launched initially in The IPG Member Stores. The IPG is the largest and fastest growing membership group for plumbing, heating and bathroom specialists, wanted to add BT1 to their stock profile and give their members the latest technology for plumbing and installations. Since the growth and reputation of BT1 and the important role it plays in keeping a healthier environment, Wickes stores, will now also be stocking BT1 nationwide. ISO-CHEMIE is BIM-READY
Andy Swift, ISO Chemie’s sales & operations manager, UK & ROI, said: “Systematically maintained building data helps the operator throughout the structure’s life cycle with the knowledge of what has been installed and where. If a window has to be replaced in 30 years’ time, it will be clearly identifiable which products were used and which component connections are affected. So renovations can be planned efficiently and carried out under controlled conditions.”
As one of the leading manufacturers in the field of sealing technology, ISO-Chemie is now able provide architects and specialist planners with BIM-ready product data for its sealing and in-front-of-wall installation solutions.
B
uilding Information Modeling (BIM) is playing an increasingly significant role in the implementation of large and complex planning tasks. The first step was to create a range of BIM data from the “joint sealing tapes”, “multifunctional joint sealing tapes” and “in-front-of-wall installation systems” product families; these are available for downloading as BIM-ready objects. More products are at the planning stage. The BIM data can be used free of charge, either via the in-house ISO-PORTAL at portal.iso-chemie.eu or using an external BIM database. It can also be used in CAD software such as Autodesk Revit. An electronic CAD product catalogue will be available as a supplement to this. The BIM model-based planning method is intended to facilitate planning, execution and management of buildings across all the trades involved using a common data model for all participants. The important factor is that all the relevant building data is digitally recorded, combined and interlinked in a model.

Terrazzo Trend for Mastic Asphalt Flooring by the Mastic Asphalt Council (MAC) Although mastic asphalt is one of the world’s oldest construction materials, it can sometimes be perceived as a one-dimensional waterproofing product that is only available in a standard black finish. But like many long-lasting, tried and tested materials, mastic asphalt is being re-imagined as a highly relevant building material for today. astic asphalt is an ideal building material for a whole range of construction applications, both new build and refurbishment projects, where a seamless, durable surface is required. It is commonly associated with roofing, tanking, paving and screeding projects due to its ability to offer total waterproofing protection, but several contractor members of the Mastic Asphalt Council (MAC) have noted an increase in mastic asphalt being specified for flooring projects.
M
Able to be laid over many different structural bases such as concrete, metal flooring and timber boarding, mastic asphalt offers a dust-free, seamless surface ideal for high traffic flooring applications. MAC has seen a trend emerging of the use of mastic asphalt flooring incorporating terrazzo. Modern interpretations of terrazzo have been created by combining decorative stone chippings with mastic asphalt, which is then polished to create infinite possibilities in any design situation. Other finishes can also be created - matt or smooth - as opposed to the highly polished effect normally associated with terrazzo. Mastic asphalt terrazzo offers the durability and distinctive features of terrazzo and consists of a traditional mastic asphalt base with a modern finish. Slip and skid resistance can be incorporated into the wearing course of the mastic asphalt.
Bell Asphalt has carried out an impressive mastic asphalt terrazzo flooring application at a multi-million pound private residence in London’s Mayfair. Mastic asphalt terrazzo was specified for a 120m2 refurbishment of the garage floor, due to its exceptional waterproofing properties and decorative terrazzo finish. The existing floor was uneven so Bell Asphalt levelled the floor with a waterproofing mastic asphalt layer applied at 10-25mm and silver grey terrazzo was incorporated at 30mm, resulting in a highly decorative, hard-wearing finish able to withstand impact and abrasion from vehicles in the garage. Aside from the decorative finish, mastic asphalt terrazzo was specified by architects Nord Studio of Berlin due its exceptional
durability, optimum fire rating and non-flammable properties (BroofT4 according to BS EN 13501-1). As well as being low maintenance, seamless and easy to clean, mastic asphalt flooring is moisture and rodent resistant, rot proof and a proven radon and methane barrier. Mastic asphalt is also carbon neutral and 100% recyclable at the end of its useful life. The Mastic Asphalt Council (MAC) is the trade association for the mastic asphalt industry in the UK. Representing more than 80 companies, MAC members include mastic asphalt manufacturers, specialist application contractors and associated suppliers of equipment and services. MAC can recommend experienced contractors to carry out mastic asphalt projects.

As we move forward into 2021 and the challenges that continue to face us, we would like to take this opportunity to reiterate our policy of stockholding and how it is even more relevant at present
“‘These are challenging times for all businesses, and the last thing we need to make our projects even more stressful is a delayed chain of supply,” says Managing Director, JIS Europe, Richard Thelwell. “We are able to maintain the chain of supply quite simply due to our longstanding policy of stockholding providing further financial stability to ourselves but as importantly to our customers.”
Stainless steel is 100% recyclable, and manufactured from over 90% recyclable material. It does not rust, flake or corrode. It is the sustainable, durable choice.
Furthermore the Sussex Range is manufactured from 100% stainless steel including our recently introduced Black Edition of powder coated rails.
We offer 3 formats of rail throughout the range: Electric, dual fuel and central heating only and we offer both a polished and satin finish as well as the Black Edition Range.
“More and more people are coming round to the durability and sustainability of stainless steel, particularly after the year we have just had, we all need to be aware of our environmental and social impact.”
“The cornerstones of our business are quite simply quality, stock holding and ultimately customer service. The three work hand in hand.”
“On a practical note our customers don’t want to go to the expense and disruption of fitting out their bathroom to 2 years down the line find that an inferior mild steel rail rusts, leaks and they then need a complete re-tile when the replacement isn’t dimensionally identical to the original.”

We source our rails ethically and take our social responsibility seriously, from our sourcing to our manufacture to our charity initiatives.

Black Barn: Former Cotswolds Grain Store captured by Handover Photography studio, Handover, share their captures of Black Barn – the 6,500 sq ft development situated north of the Cotswolds, completed in 2020 by multidisciplinary architecture, interior design and delivery studio Rigby & Rigby. eveloped as a holistic scheme which is utilitarian in design, a key consideration was referencing Black Barn’s former use as an agricultural grain store. The residence comprises accommodation in the main house with a Dutch Barn running in parallel, framing an inner courtyard space. By carefully respecting the buildings original form, the property was punctuated symmetrically with largeformat windows to provide lots of natural light and ventilation.
“Black Barn was a unique opportunity for us to work on such a large scale residential photography project.” Explains Daniel Tuck, co-founder of Handover. “Whilst capturing the traditional architectural elevations was key, we often work to capture the more abstract perspectives when documenting such a visually striking property. Having seen the concept develop from drawing to completion, we gained an in-depth understanding of how Rigby & Rigby wanted to showcase this home and how their talented design team fully deserve their esteemed worldwide reputation.” A central staircase and fireplace run along the length of Black Barn, reflecting the scale and depth within the double-height void. This provides circulation onto the mezzanine seating area from where a glass walkway provides access to private bedrooms with en-suites. At the southernmost part of the upper storey, a library is located with far-reaching views across the countryside. Externally the architecture was simplified by enhancing the detailing around the cladding with a contrast of materials used from black liner multi-width timber and sheet aluminium, both materials being honest to the building’s former aesthetic.
•4•
The Nordic style interior design scheme was developed from its minimalist background to create the multifunctional and open plan living area for family living, entertaining, dining, breakfast whilst relaxation is found in the media room with pool table and bar overlooking the courtyard. The interior is comfortable with design classics from Flexform and Poltrona Frau and the new Rimedesio range for coffee tables. A custom ‘Skyfall’ rug designed by Rigby & Rigby in collaboration with Colbourns surrounds the fireplace and informal seating area. One specific outstanding feature of Black Barn is the Dutch Barn which creates an inner shelter adjacent to the Japanese inspired courtyard space to the main house. The Dutch Barn features an annexe with a mezzanine bedroom, bathroom and kitchen/living facilities. Also, Black Barn comes with a fully equipped gym, workshop garage - to house a classic bike and car, a covered BBQ area for the summer months and an adjacent kitchen garden for vegetables and herbs with an orchard to the rear nestled into a wild meadow.

doors & Windows Eurocell has always led the way in patio door design. In fact, we’ve long been the customer’s choice when it comes to security, strength and performance that never compromises on design. So what’s new? Introducing Syncro, a brand new in-line system that opens up even more possibilities in terms of design, energy efficiency and sustainability. Not just our strongest and most secure atio door system yet, Syncro also provides a new level of sustainability, plus improved design and performance that meet the demands of installers and homeowners alike thanks to several market leading features. These include main frames made using at least 40% post-consumer recycled PVC-U; better thermal efficiency, with triple glazed U-values as low as 1.0; a 3.5m maximum width, one of the largest PVC-U patio door systems on the market; and a unique soft close system, which, along with a choice of standard or heavy duty rollers allowing sash weights of up to 140kg, makes for a much smoother glide and closure action with no ‘bounce back’ if the door is accidently slammed. What’s more, is the option of a through-colour grey substrate – a first for Eurocell in a patio door. The grey substrate is extruded in PVC-U with special heat reflecting pigment to help reduce expansion on hot days. Not only does this the give designers a way to meet current design trends for the all grey look; but because patio doors are open so much of the time on sunny summer days, it also makes for much more pleasing visual appearance by removing any unsightly white extruded areas.
Benefits at a glance: • More sustainable with frame composition made up of at least 40% PCW (post-consumer waste) • Better thermal efficiency with U-values as low as 1.3 for double glazed units and 1.0 for triple glazed • Maximum width of 3.5m (2 pane) • Triple as well as double glazing compatible for even better insulation. • Grey substrate for total coordination with modern designs • Soft close option
Smooth or matt grey foil options can also be ordered along with traditional rosewood and golden oak from stock, plus 32 further colour options on longer lead times, extend the colour choices further. Like all Eurocell PVC-U products, the Syncro system comes with an exact colour-match guarantee. That means the colour is precisely matched to all Eurocell window, door and conservatory roof products, creating a coordinated, consistent look across any property. Syncro is tested to BS6375 and PAS24 2016 standards and therefore meets the requirements of Document Q - the newest security guidelines for patio doors. And for additional peace of mind, Syncro has been through 50,000 cycles of open and close tests to prove robustness.
Following customer feedback and as part of Eurocell’s continual improvement programme we have also introduced a new Aluminium Interlock to be used on all none PAS24 Syncro patio doors to help improve the fabrication and installation process. Ian Kernaghan, Head of Product Design and Development for Eurocell commented, “Syncro has been designed to meet the changing needs of the patio door market and we believe it does that job beautifully. It offers customers genuinely attractive options like triple glazing, a soft close feature and white or grey substrate options, in addition to using recycled PVC-U content and achieving new levels of thermal and acoustic insulation efficiency.

P C Henderson’s Sienna System Specified for a Stunning Self Build in County Wicklow P C Henderson’s Sienna sliding door system has recently been specified for a stunning self-build project in the beautiful countryside of Aughrim, Co. Wicklow.
ooking to build their dream family home, Fáinche and Donnchadh Murphy were delighted when they came across the perfect site situated in the Co. Wicklow countryside surrounded by stunning mountain views.
L
Planning the design of the 3 bed bungalow themselves, the couple’s main goal was to create a large open plan living area for the family to enjoy. To ensure flexibility of living, the couple opted for double glazed sliding doors to separate the living area from the bedroom block – vaulted ceilings were also included in the design to enhance the space even further. Fáinche Murphy commented, “Our aim was to maximise floor space in the living area whilst having the flexibility to create open spaces during the day and then close the doors off on an evening to enjoy a cosier environment. Sliding doors seemed the perfect solution especially with the added benefit of saving floor space in comparison to a swing door”. P C Henderson’s Sienna sliding door system was identified as the best solution for the project. Designed with a stainless steel bar track and exposed top mounted hangers, Sienna offers an elegant and stylish system. “We required a sliding door system which followed the same barn-style décor scheme we had used throughout the rest of the property - when we mentioned this to our builder, he was quick to mention P C Henderson. The Sienna system perfectly complements the other stainless steel features in our home and the doors glide open and closed with very little effort. We’re delighted with the flexibility that the system has brought to our home”, continued Fáinche. P C Henderson’s Sienna sliding door system caters for wooden and glass doors weighing up to 120kg. Available in a range of track lengths, the system caters for both single and biparting door applications.

Don’t Reap What You Sow: Invest in good quality artificial grass Artificial grass is a fantastic hasslefree investment, but not all grass is created equal. For the untrained eye, picking a top-quality product can be a difficult task. Adrian Buttress, managing director at PermaLawn, which is part of the PermaGroup umbrella of brands, discusses the difference between cheap and high-quality artificial grass options and explains why it’s worth recommending that your clients invest upfront for the long-term benefits. heap products may have an unbelievably attractive price, but if they start failing sooner than you think, the project can end up becoming a reputation-damaging job for architects, designers and developers, as well as a very costly investment for homeowners.
C
With this in mind, it’s inaccurate to only compare price when supporting a customer in their decision-making – and artificial grass is no exception to the rule. Cost comparison in any industry is always on a like-for-like basis. However, in the grass market, that difference is far more than simply pile height and price. There is only so far you can go when cutting down production costs before you start hitting problems. When something is cheaper, it’s usually because you are getting less product. For example, while it all looks the same when it is brand new on
•30•
the roll, that will change once the artificial grass has been exposed to the outdoor climates.
Protecting your reputation It’s tempting to try and undercut your competitors by using cheap materials in order to be able to offer a reduced quote, but it’s something than can become costly to designers in the long run. A good reputation will work wonders for a business – but it’s important to remember that a negative one can be just as powerful. If something goes wrong down the line, even if the failures are down to the material itself as opposed to the installation, a developer will end up getting the blame. So, recommending good quality artificial grass upfront and explaining your reasons – namely saving homeowners money over the years – behind this to clients is crucial, even if it does mean your quote is higher than others.
Helping choose a lawn that looks realistic and stands the test of time Like most things, manufacturers can take shortcuts in the production process to save themselves time and money, which allows them to offer their artificial grass at a lower price than their competitors. However, it’s important to remember that these cheap prices only come by sacrificing quality. To help steer your clients away from purchasing artificial grass they may regret installing in the
When specifying artificial grass for a job, you should also ask about the stich rate, which is the number of stitches per 10cm. As a general rule of thumb, better quality grass has a higher stitch rate.
Telling your clients there is more to artificial grass than just plastic fibres The secondary backing material, which tends to be made up of either latex or polyurethane, holds the tufts in place and allows the fake grass to lie flat. One of the keys to a longlasting fake lawn is artificial grass that has been manufactured with sufficiently high quantities of latex.
future and to maintain your reputation, there are a few key signs that can help you spot poor quality products – ensuring your customers enjoy the many benefits that having an ever-green and ever-mowed lawn brings for years to come. A certain level of yarn loss is to be expected, but it shouldn’t be excessive. The easiest way to test this is to pull the tufts from the middle of a sample – if you get good resistance and no shedding, the product is solid.
Generally, artificial grass made in Europe tends to be of much higher quality because of the European Union’s stringent standards and regulations that manufacturers have to comply with. PermaLawn works with a renowned European manufacturer with decades of proven background and experience – ensuring the artificial grass we supply is well worth the money. It’s also important to check the warranty that comes with your artificial grass – some cheaper
options will only guarantee the product for five years, whereas PermaLawn products are guaranteed for seven.
Getting the stock, you want, when you need it Many stockists will have to wait up to 12-weeks for a delivery to be imported from the manufacturer, meaning homeowners will need to plan their garden renovations months in advance and contractors will be waiting for a while before getting started on the project. However, PermaLawn purposefully sits on 100,000m2 of stock all year round at our headquarters in Derbyshire and delivers just the amount you need for your garden. Artificial grass is a smart, convenient and aesthetically pleasing solution. And for a lawn that lasts and makes others green with envy, it is worth recommending that clients invest upfront in a quality product. For further information on PermaLawn and to become an installer, please visit www.perma-lawn.co.uk or call 01773 441 952.

integrated into the wall, draped floor to ceiling, or even shaped to the curvature of the a building or space. Due to the translucency of the water feature’s metal mesh, wherever it is installed, lighting in the space will not be greatly diminished. In addition, the design of the AquaVeil® allows for a tailored lighting system to be included in the top and bottom of the feature, meaning the water effect can be experienced during both the day and night. Mike Tillett, Director, Tills Innovations Ltd, comments: “Since my brother and I founded Tills Innovations Ltd over 20 years ago, we have been driven to make a long-lasting contribution to water feature design; striving for flair, creativity and individuality in all we do. The AquaVeil® has been carefully designed to not only look beautiful, but to incorporate engineered solutions which enable straightforward and effective aftercare of the water wall. This includes an advanced filtration system, specially-created water treatment solutions, and options for automatic water top up and drain down for maintenance. In addition, due to the foldable nature of the metal mesh, the AquaVeil® can be easily transported, and large features can be installed in tight-access locations. To support architects and interior designers in their design process, Tills Innovations Ltd will provide easy-to-apply design specification documents which can be added to architectural drawings. Outdoor Living his is good news for companies like H M Garden Rooms in Buckinghamshire. Having searched for garden offices for themselves, and finding a limited choice of well-priced, good quality options, Jordan Hickson and Jordan Marsh, both with over 20 years’ experience in the construction industry, set up H M Garden Rooms. Using quality materials, they produce a range of built-to-last, aesthetically-pleasing garden buildings that their clients have put to a multitude of uses.
T
Garden rooms made beautiful with SterlingOSB Zero With more and more people working and studying at home, the need for extra space has grown enormously. Whether it’s somewhere to make Zoom calls in peace, or to chill after a long day juggling home-schooling, or to get on your bike, a garden room has become a much-sought after addition to many homes.
One of the top-quality materials the company relies on for these structures is Norbord’s SterlingOSB Zero. As Director Jordan Hickson explains “SterlingOSB Zero is easier to use and lighter but just as strong as plywood. It throws up no challenges so we are able to get the job done with no fuss. It’s also cheaper than ply and readily available so it ticks a lot of boxes for us and we’ll continue to use it in our builds”. All of H M Garden Room’s buildings are clad in a variety of beautiful materials but Jordan has found that clients are increasingly asking for the SterlingOSB Zero to be left exposed on the interior as part of the design finish. “A recent client wanted the printed side of the OSB left bare inside their mud room as they really like the utilitarian feel of the material”, Jordan explained. H M Garden Rooms purchases SterlingOSB Zero from local builders’ merchants Travis Perkins and Grant & Stone branches in the Home Counties, depending on the project location. To find out more about Norbord’s full range of carbon negative panel products visit the website and you can download a product guide and can even order free samples.

Composite hollow decking is perfect for gardens and pool areas as well as outdoor seating areas in pubs and offices. Its recycled wood polymer construction makes composite wood so much more durable than timber. Composite wood has added resistance to damage from a variety of the common threats to the appearance of decking; whether that be bicycles, barbecues, party-goers, garden furniture or foot traffic, and can be complemented with our range of composite balustrades. Hollw decking is: • Made using a unique homogenous wood polymer construction that maintains its high performance for years and years without the need for time consuming maintenance and painting • Constructed from ethically sourced, traceable recycled wood from timber mills and recycled plastic polymer
Eco fence is our composite fence range. It’s low maintenance and available in three colours with a 20-year guarantee. The fencing panels are lightweight and simply slot together to create the desired height.
• 60% timber content to prevent damage. It is strong enough to withstand stiletto heels and is naturally slip resistant and splinter free
Finally, we offer Kyube garden buildings. These customisable garden rooms can be built for a variety of uses, form a home gym, office or playroom, to simply a place to relax.
• Double-sided to create different looks – one side is grooved and the other is woodgrain effect

Not all external platform lifts are the same! Is your external platform lift IP65 rated? This means it offers complete protection from dust, and protection against low pressure water jets from any angle.
W
e’ve just fitted our Inva Euro platform lift externally at Sheffield University, and the IP65 rating was one of the key factors in deciding to use this particular lift.
Installation can be completed in as little as 2-3 days, with minimal building work required, and the requirement of just single phase electrics can reduce the cost of an electrician and associated works.
The Inva Euro is manufactured from stainless steel and then powder coated in a choice of different colour finishes to provide a hard wearing and durable finish.
The lift is available with optional fire rated doors, tinted glazing and swipe card control, so it’s possible to customise the lift to suit your exact needs.
This lift is available in a choice of platform sizes, ranging from 1250mm x 900mm to 1400m x 1100mm, so you can find a size which is ideal for your needs. With travel heights up to 7 metres, as well as emergency battery lowering and an autodialler fitted as standard, this is the perfect choice for an outside lift.

Cabin Platform Lift for new apartment block We’ve just installed our Inva Commercial Cabin Lift at a three storey installation in a new build block of apartments.
O
ur lift was the perfect solution for access offering a cabin size of 1100mm wide x 1400mm deep with sliding landing doors at each landing.
With custom cabin lighting, and simple, one touch operation, the fully enclosed lift is easy to use, whilst there is no requirement for a machine room, substantial pit and headroom as required by a traditional passenger lift. Installed within a concrete or masonry shaft, the cabin lift can also be supplied in a supporting steel structure. The lift is compliant to the machinery directive and with a capacity of 400Kg and operating at a speed of 0.15m/s, allowing the cabin lift to operate safely with a recess of only 120mm and a headroom above the upper landing of 2600mm.
The Inva commercial cabin lift also has the flexibility to offer special cabin sizes to suit most existing shafts along with 3 panel telescopic landing doors and even single swing landing door for particularly small existing shafts. Available in a range of RAL and wood cabin finishes, the lift is the perfect addition to both public and commercial buildings.
