CT1 replaces several different sealants and adhesives in one tube. It’s the ultimate snag list eliminator providing permanent sealing and bonding solutions, saving time and money by delivering outstanding performance on almost every type of building material in virtually every application.

Creating Waves in Bristol

When building the groundbreaking Wavegarden Cove project in Bristol, engineering specialists Andrew Scott Ltd needed extremely high preforming, highly deformable and very durable adhesives and

sealants guaranteed to endure rigorous and testing conditions in consistently wet conditions, and even underwater. The Wave is a 180m inland surf lake generating up 1000 waves per hour ranging from 50cm to 2m in height, deliv ering unrivalled inland surfing experiences suitable for every level from beginners to the seasoned professionals.

With the originally specified adhe sives failing to meet the tough requirements of this complex build, Project Manager Steven Hunt turned to CT1. Needing products guaranteed to stand the test of time in harsh, wet conditions, on constantly moving platforms CT1 delivered while also meeting the client’s environment and sustain able build values.

CT1is
CT1,

CT1 was put through every possible assessment for adhesion, flexibility and strength, exceeding every expectation and providing the architects, specifiers, engineers and clients with assurances and confi dence in the success of their project.

CT1 not only delivered during the build phase but it continues to deliver while being tested every day by the harsh environment exacer bated by the strength of moving bodies water and thousands of users. Such has been the unrivalled success and performance of CT1 it has been already specified on their next wave project in Scotland.

STREAMS LIGHT WANDSWORTH KITCHEN EXTENSIONS

A Steel Window Association member company has created a large and elegant screen which forms the entire end wall to a new kitchen-dining room for a private residence in the desirable London Borough of Wandsworth.

W20 DOOR SCREEN

Perla

Windows worked in close cooperation with the building contractor, TA Prestige Construction, and the client’s architect MAP Architecture to design, manufacture and install the 5.5 metre wide, 3.5 metre tall screen. This was fabricated using the timeless W20 steel sections, which closely match the appearance of earlier steel frames often seen in warehouses and other old properties.

Finished in RAL 7009 Green Grey and glazed with Krypton-filled 20mm IG units, which also use warm edge spacer bars to help reduce heat loss, the opening lights and three doorsets feature high performance weather-stripping. All the ironmongery was sourced with an antique brass finish from Carlisle Brass.

The founder of Perla Windows, Nick Vassilopoulos, commented: “This is our favourite project to date, featuring an unusually large screen for a private home that incorporates a double door and single doors as well as fixed lights - all in a lovely grey colour, with cool ironmongery.”

Jessica Meech, Architectural Assistant at MAP Architects, added: “We were impressed with the communication from the Perla team and their work on assuring that the site survey was accurate and delivered on time (even during the pandemic!)  Perla worked very well with the contractor on site and were quick to respond to building control queries. We loved both their work ethic and the excellent design and finish of the product and very much look forward to working with Perla again!”

Members of the Steel Window Association cover the whole of the UK to serve all sectors of the construction industry, including hotels, retail, residential and high security applications.  The SWA has an on-going programme of product development which has seen its Technical Committee carry out testing on new thermal-breaks and fire doors for internal use; while its collective buying power is helping to mitigate price rises and maintain the supply chain.  In addition to the widely specified W20 systems, customers can also choose from the W40 and W50 frames, amongst other options, or access services for the repair and restoration of older steel windows in heritage situations.

GRAF UK LAUNCHES RAINWATER HARVESTING CPD WATER MANAGEMENT SPECIALISTS GRAF UK DIVE INTO RAINWATER HARVESTING.

A CPD that explains the issues around rainwater harvesting and advises on the options available for specifiers and users has been launched by water management specialists Graf UK.

The 55-minute presentation delivers a range of “Rainwater research” , extending from the fundamentals (what is rainwater harvesting and why is it required) to key regulations and issues, via a user-friendly mix of “live” presenta tion and videos.

Graf UK’s new CPD shows just how little of the earth’s water is

available for use by the global population and forecasts a global rainwater crisis in the next 25 years, with water shortages in the UK by 2040.

It advises on what rainwater can and cannot be used for, Health and Safety considerations for the installation of underground tanks, and how harvesting systems can be combined with storage for SUDS and stormwater management.

The new CPD by Graf UK, a member of the UK Rainwater Management Association, also advises on options for garden,

domestic and commercial applica tions, how an underground tank is typically installed, and how it works (primarily from run-off from roofs).

A guide to sizing rainwater harvesting systems according to BS EN 16941-1:2018 and criteria such as expected yield and ground conditions is also featured in the CPD, along with options for modular add-ons such as covers, filters and technical packages.

7 REASONS DESIGNERS AND ARCHITECTS CHOOSE FORMICA® LAMINATE FOR DOORS

When it comes to choosing materials for door applications, there is no shortage of options. But only Formica® Laminate offers a powerful mix of performance, endurance, hygiene and long-term value.

That combination of benefits is why Formica ® High Pressure Laminates (HPL) are so well regarded across the design and construction industries.

Nina Bailey, European Design Lead at Formica Group, says: “Doors are not only functional fixtures to close off spaces – they are a key part of the overall interior design and can often be the finishing touch to creating a crisp and refined look.“

When you choose Formica laminates for your door applications, you enjoy:

1. Impressive toughness All Formica laminates are highly resistant to stains, impact and scratches – making them ideal for busy areas or hightouch surfaces such as doors or work areas.

2. Long-lasting performance and beauty . Formica laminates can be installed with the confidence that they will maintain their quality and aesthetic appeal for many years to come offering better life-cycle value than lowercost alternatives.

3. Inherent hygiene . All Formica laminates are inert, so they don’t promote bacterial growth. You don’t have to worry about specialist cleaning materials, either. Warm, soapy water is all you need to keep your laminates in perfect condition.

4. Moisture resistance . The surfaces of our laminates are non porous. A well fabricated door with sealed edges can

be used in washroom and changing room settings, without fear of imminent damage or degradation.

5. Cost-effective production and easy fabrication Formica laminates are lightweight and easy to cut to size. To ensure optimised door design and to provide maximum efficiencies in conversion, saving time and reducing material wastage, four different sheet sizes are available: 2150x950mm, 2350x950mm, 2350x1300mm and a large general 3050x1300mm sheet size.

6. Natural product textures . State-of-the-art textures can be incorporated into the laminate manufacturing process, instantly changing the look and feel of the final product. Linewood, Puregrain and Naturelle are favoured surfaces for wood decors while Matte58 is a timeless classic for colours.

7. Extensive aesthetic choices

The Formica Doors Collection includes 20 new wood decors. Additionally, a large selection of 120 plain colours are available, including 15 new colours offering the ultimate flexibility in creating an eye-catching feature door. Sheet-to-sheet consistency minimises the risk of nonmatching doors across an installation.

What is sustainability?  Sustainability can be best described as businesses meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generation to meet the needs of the future.  It has three main pillars: economic, environ mental and social.  People, Planet and Profits.

We formulated our business based on these three premises over twenty years ago.  We still, more than ever, hold to these principles.

Stainless steel is the environ mentally sound choice, it is made from over 90% recycled product and is 100% recyclable in itself.  It is durable.  It will not rust, flake or corrode, your stainless steel rail when it does eventually end its life, will not end up in landfill.

Unlike the manufacture of mild steel, chromed finish towel rails there are no harmful chemical plating processes involved in the manufacturing of stainless steel rails, they are merely polished or satinised.  These chemicals are not always disposed of in the

most ethical of manners often simply tipped into the nearest local river.

Our rails are sourced ethically, we do not source from countries that do not adhere to the principals we adhere to.  We believe in fair pay for a fair days work.  We stand by this.

We are a business and we run for profit however we keep our margins reasonable and donate to a program of 12 diverse charities a year and have our formal charity initiative with the Rye rail, donating £20 from our profits for the sale of each rail to Lucky’s Legacy Rescue.

We believe we are the environmental, ethical choice.  It is the choices we make today that lead to the choices of tomorrow.

It’s not a hard choice, we offer good product, balanced design, next day delivery on goods that are held in stock, our customer service is excellent and you are dealing with a company that will ensure the compa nies and society to come are in fact sustainable for all of our children’s tomorrows.

MIRRORS

THAN A MERE

bathroom – whether a large family bathroom or a small guest toilet – should be without an illuminated mirror. These mirrors are more than mere functional accessories: they create ab opportunity for individu ality without having to compromise on design, functionality, or comfort.

Mirrors and any accompanying bathroom lighting need to harmo nize with each other, they should be easy to operate and where possible avoid glare and mist. As it can be immensely frustrating standing in a steaming bathroom after a hot shower, with the mirrors misting over, making it all but impossible to do your hair or makeup. A heated mirror can help by preventing the mirror surface from misting up in the first place.

•12•
FROM DURAVIT: MORE
REFLECTION • Anti-mist mirror heating for enhanced comfort • Hygienic operation • Approved quality for wet rooms • Smart app control for selected models • Glare-free lighting alongside optimum illumination A clear view, optimum illumination, and ease of operation - an absolute must. Gentle lighting for some spa downtime in the home bathroom. (Image source: Duravit AG) No

This is an option that is already inte grated on many mirrors within the Duravit designer furniture series; the “best” models of the universal Light and Mirror range can also be ordered as an optional extra.

On the Happy D.2 Plus, Luv, XSquare, models and the icon version of XViu, the heating is switched on and off using an icon on the operating panel, while on the other models it is connected to the light. The integrated “auto-off” function switches the heating off after an hour.

Contactless operation

Two convenient operating systems are available: an integrated sensor ensures that the mirror and the accompanying light can be operated contactlessly. As an alternative, a contactless control panel for the main light, ambient light, light temperature, and mirror heating is available on the surface of the mirror. Contactless control is hygienic and prevents unwanted fingerprints on the surface.

Control via the Casambi app

Creating a pleasant atmos phere in the bathroom is easier than ever with mirrors that are compatible with the Casambi light-control app, such as those in the White Tulip or Zencha range. Light temperature with a memory effect, mirror heating, or dim function are really easy to control. Additionally, customers can create and save scenes, such as extrasoft lighting for some spa downtime in the home bathroom.

Glare-free lighting alongside optimum illumination

To ensure the best lumi nous efficacy, Duravit uses modern technology to create computer simulations to precisely calculate the light extraction.

Specially selected LEDs are used with a guaranteed service life of at least 30 years1 and consistently high luminous efficiency. The spacing of the indi vidual LEDs on the circuit boards is individually defined and specially manufactured for each product and model.

The light sources on mirrors with a light band in the mirror surface - such as Brioso, Duravit No.1, Happy D.2 Plus, L-Cube, Luv, XSquare, XViu, and Zencha or on the products from the universal Light and Mirrors range - are deflected by a reflector.

This is specially constructed and guaran tees glare-free lighting on all models.

As a rule, individual light sources are not visible, the light is homo geneous, has optimum brightness of at least 300 lux in the field of vision, as well as high color fidelity for natural colour rendering of skin tones. The light colour is 3500 or 4000 Kelvin depending on the model.

Quality, sustainability, and safety

All Duravit mirror and mirror cabinet models use energy spar ingly. The development process involves comprehensive tests in a climatic chamber to ensure that the materials can also cope with extreme conditions. For example high temperatures or high humidity as well as splash-proof protection pursuant to IP44.

SECURE IN THE KNOWLEDGE

Burglary is common in the UK - a new break-in occurs every 106 seconds – that’s 34 burglaries per hour, 817 per day. There’s a one in 43 chance of your household being burgled.

With the colder, longer, darker nights, we especially start thinking about home security and keeping down our energy bills – a particularly important consideration during the current cost of living/energy crisis.

Crittall Windows, the pioneer of iconic steel frame window manufacture for almost 180 years, says its advanced steel framed window, HomelightPlus ticks all the boxes for making your home more secure and helping keep down costly energy bills.

“The ‘eyes of the home’, windows play their part in home security and potential energy savings,” says Russell Ager, managing director of Crittall Windows. “Factors like security and energy savings are key factors when deciding which windows are best for your home. You can put your mind at rest and significantly save on costly energy bills by choosing high quality, well designed, stylish steel windows.

“Look to the innovation in window frame development. For example, our re-engineered HomelightPlus range of residential windows is the

21st Century enhanced version of the original Standard Metal window first made by our company during the 1920s. It brings new-look styling and window profiling, plus higher energysavings, performance, and enhanced security.

“Whatever the type or size of your property, it’s an authentic ‘like for like’ steel window. Peace-of-mind is reassured through an improved, robust, security multi-point locking option tested to the Enhanced Security PAS 24 standard - so the window is especially secure. With higher energy-saving accreditations,

industry news

the window is thermally improved to meet Part L of Building Regulations by achieving either a Window Energy Rating (WER) Band B or a U value as low as 1.0w/m2k.”

For additional energy efficiency, HomelightPlus windows include double weatherstripping, and feature larger, high performance, double glazing units which, coupled with minimal profile sizes, achieve excellent Window Energy Rating standards.

These features provide year-round comfort ensuring this bespoke modern steel window retains heat during cold winters, and controls heat in the summer, whilst also generally reducing noise levels.

Easy to replace, HomelightPlus windows replicate the original Homelight Standard Metal window with modular, multi-light construction and comes with fixed, top or side hung including projecting options.

While its even slimmer ‘timeless’ frame profiles and sight-lines, present a light delicate feel inside and out, creating a welcome sense of airiness and space. To maximise daylight, the window’s design incorporates larger areas of glass than any other window of a similar size.

Quality-made, galvanised steel windows like this will last over 60 years.

They are competitively priced, economical to maintain long-term. While being Polyester powder coated ensures a consistent, even, coating, not requiring redecoration for 25 - 30 years.

The window is available through the nationwide network of Crittall Specialist Partners in a choice of styles (including true divided glazing bar options) and as part of the Crittall Contemporary Colour Collection in 46 colours, plus different colours can be specified for internal and external surfaces. The steel window frames can match – or contrast with - your interior décor.

Do it in style

Mr Ager adds: “When choosing window frames for your home, carefully consider the style and material. They have a dramatic impact on the look – personality - of your home. Even affecting its value. It’s important that the windows chosen match its style, contemporary or traditional. Installed appropriately, quality steel windows can enhance a property.

“It’s not worth spoiling the look of a property for the sake of a cheap installation. Ensure you install the window brand it says it is - only the original, genuine, make. As a top brand in the marketplace and as the original steel window company, our steel windows, doors and screens are often imitated but never matched.”

HIGH QUALITY OUTDOOR KITCHENS FOR THE GARDEN ARCHITECT AND DESIGNER

Why and when did you launch KönigOutdoor?

We knew that the “outdoor kitchen” was gaining in popularity way before the pandemic. TV shows (sometimes from the Southern Hemisphere), garden centres, cookery channels – all seemed to point to outdoor living more and more.

Our expertise in quality surfaces and worktops, and conversations with garden designers and archi tects led us to launch KönigOutdoor in 2022.

Joanne Bull, Marketing Manager for KönigOutdoor, and Königstone, answers questions on the growing market for outdoor kitchens and what the garden architect and designer need to look for when specifying an al fresco living scheme.

What is KönigOutdoor?

The KönigOutdoor range combines stylish sintered stone-clad cabi netry with materials of proven durability. We have created standard sized units that can be configured to suit the customer’s needs as well as offering a bespoke design service. We have teamed up with Neolith to provide eight colour options and we also offer a selection of high-end appliances to complete the package.

What if the customer wants a kitchen in another colour outside of the chosen eight?

One of the bonuses of working with Neolith is the wide range of colours. If a customer sees a colour on the Neolith website, we can create a KönigOutdoor kitchen using it. We believe the eight we chose will be the most popular so it saves the customer from spending hours scrolling through loads of different shades.

Why is the trend for outdoor kitchens gaining in popularity?

Historically, big events can change people’s priorities and we are confident that more value has been placed on spending quality time with family and friends at home, therefore creating a space for gath erings has increased importance.

What key elements do architects and designers need to include when planning a cooking space specifically for outdoors?

Definitely stylish appliances that are not only suitable for outdoor use but that look great and give a fantastic cooking experience, similar to indoor appliances.

It is also important to think about having usable surfaces for food preparation and food service. Stone surfaces such as granite or sintered stone are perfect as they are easy to maintain; simply wipe with a damp cloth and mild detergent or anti-bacterial spray to create a clean and hygienic surface.

What are the most suitable materials for outdoor kitchen furniture and surfaces – eg UV damage, weather corrosion, maintenance?

We believe the perfect material for an outdoor kitchen is sintered stone from Neolith which we use to clad our KönigOutdoor units, because it is resistant to extreme

•20• KITCHENS

temperatures, scratches and UV rays so can withstand anything the British weather can throw at it. Furthermore, it is 100% natural, hygienic, easy to clean and water proof with the added benefit of giving a sophisticated high-end aesthetic.

What kind of customer should the designer be targeting for KönigOutdoor?

Definitely the high-end buyer who has disposable income. The KönigOutdoor range is made from high-quality materials and is made to stand the test of time. We have also chosen our appliances with this in mind – once you see and feel the quality of the built-in BBQ, you will know it holds the same quality as the whole outdoor kitchen.

What has been the response from the market so far?

We have a customer base of kitchen retailers from our stone surfaces so we have encouraged quite a few to take a dive into the outdoor kitchen market,

particularly those at the higher end of the market. We have also had a great response from compa nies that specialise in outdoor kitchens that are wanting to expand their current offering with a product of superior finish and quality for the more dis cern ing cus tomers who demand the very best.  Garden architects and designers are important markets too of course.

Do you think the outdoor living trend is here to stay? If so, why?

Definitely. With the consecutive lockdowns, it really showed us the benefits of time outdoors and although by and large life has returned to normal, we’ve been left with that renewed apprecia tion for our outdoor spaces, and more clients want their indoor and outdoor spaces to be as inte grated and seamless as possible. Technological innovations such as retractable pergolas and clever outdoor heating have also opened up our gardens for longer periods of the year

We support designers and archi tects with literature including brochures, price lists and example configurations, as well as supplying samples of the eight Neolith finishes available as standard.

Our sales managers are very well briefed on everything outdoor kitchen-related and offer training on the benefits of our cabinetry and the appliances that we supply. We also welcome visits to our factory in Kettering where we manufacture each order and are happy to provide support for any events or exhibitions.

For further information on Königstone, please email info@konigstone.co.uk or visit www.konigstone.co.uk

What POS or “training” will you provide designers who choose to specify KönigOutdoor?

TECH TRENDS YOU MIGHT SEE IN YOUR HOME SOONER THAN YOU THINK

With smart home systems and the “Internet of Things” breaking into mainstream use, leading touchscreen developer Zytronic noodle on some of the tech trends we can expect to see in our homes in the near future.

Key findings:

• 50% of UK residents aged 16+ now own a smart speaker, up from 20% in 2019.

• The number of smart devices in homes is predicted to almost double by 2025.

• The latest ElectroglaZ™ technology creates the possibility of sleek new designer furniture such as glass bedside tables that can wirelessly charge your phone and other devices.

• All new UK homes built from 2022 onwards will be required to have electric vehicle charging, with more electric cars bought in the UK in 2021 than in the past 5 years combined.

• The proportion of the UK workforce that are hybrid working has risen from 13% in February 2022 to 24% by May 2022, with manufacturers of hybrid working tech thriving as a result.

• Home security system innovations include Amazon’s Astro, a security robot that roams around the home, as well as AI alarm systems that use contextual information to call emergency services or detect a false fire alarm.

• 28% of adults use sleep tracking apps, with wrist bands and under-mattress sensors also available to help track sleep patterns.

• Smart homes are also being designed to allow ageing in place, including smart pill dispensers, video check-ins with friends and family and realtime availability of healthcare support built in.

Top Tech Trends in the Home …

Until recent years, the idea of the “smart home” was something limited to tech conventions and proof of concepts. However, the growing affordability of this technology, combined with the soaring popularity of home improvement trends as a result of lockdown and increased home working, means that smart home technology is quickly catching on.

Interconnected Smart Devices

The idea of standalone smart home devices is becoming increasingly outdated as we slowly move towards an “Internet of Things” future, wherein everything in our home is part of a single digital infrastructure.

2022 has seen larger steps than ever in this regard, as everything from lights, entertainment, heating, secu rity and appliances become connected to our smart speakers and smart devices. Although systems like these have largely been used by early adopters and tech enthusiasts thus far, smart home technology is now reaching mainstream levels.

50% of UK residents aged 16+ now own a smart speaker, up from 20% in 2019, whilst more than four in ten adults use smart technology to work the television. With this comes a drive in wider smart “ecosystems” Companies like Amazon, Apple and Google are all pushing smart speakers – not only as a single product – but also as a gateway to their other linked smart services. For example, in 2020, Google offered a free Nest Mini smart speaker to all Spotify Premium users as part of its effort to gain a further foothold in the smart ecosystem market.

These growth trends are only set to continue moving forward, with the number of smart home devices predicted to almost double by 2025, rising to 13.5 billion devices.

Smart Furniture

Smart home integrations are starting to extend beyond our portable devices and speakers and into everyday furniture. From glass tables that wire lessly charge your smartphone to home sofas that provide an immersive 4D motion experience when consuming games and movies, smart technology is filtering down to every aspect of home life. We’ve even seen the introduction of permissions-based door locks which integrate fingerprint scammers and smartphone authentication.

•26• industry news

The launch of new consumer technologies like Zytronic’s ElectroglaZ, which allows for transparent power delivery through a pane of glass, opens even further possibilities down the line for furniture applica tions in homes. Ian Crosby, Sales & Marketing Director at Zytronic, commented: “ElectroglaZ is completely transparent and can be used to ‘magically’ power a near-limitless variety of low power, electronic and electro technical devices embedded within a glass panel. Potential smart-furniture applications include everything from ‘floating’ lighting systems to glass room dividers featuring embedded hub screens, speakers or fans.”

Garages of the Future

With the news that self-driving cars could be legal on UK roads by 2025, the British driving experience is on the brink of change. The British car industry is already within a state of flux, with Britons purchased more electric cars in 2021 than the past 5 years combined. This shift in driving trends is already impacting home design, with all homes built from 2022 onwards legally required to have electric vehicle charging points. Meanwhile, more and more existing homes are incor porating garages and parking setups that accommo date self-driving experiences, such as vehicle charging points and garage doors that open as they sense your vehicle approaching home.

Home Office Setups

The working from home model adopted during the pandemic looks to continue for many businesses despite restrictions lifting. For example, 24% of UK businesses plan to use increased homeworking going forward, whilst 30% of people feel they are more productive and engaged working from home as opposed to an office environment.

As a result, the tech industry around working from home is booming. Home office technology such as smart water bottles that track your water intake, motorised desks that move from standing to sitting modes and smart posture training tools to remind

you not to slouch at your home desk are fast gaining popularity as the working from home and hybrid work models look to be here for the long term.

Home Security

The launch of Amazon’s Astro, a small roving camera bot for the home, promises users a helpful hand around the home and much more. The device’s facial recognition system, advanced navigation and obstacle avoidance system make it the perfect home security measure; Astro will autonomously patrol your home and investigate unusual events through motion and sound detection. As well as accounting for factors such as the sound of breaking glass or a fire alarm, Astro can also be used to check whether you turned off the oven or locked the front door.

Meanwhile, Alarm.com’s Ambient Insights uses AI to recognise contextual information in the event of an alarm. The system uses this data to alert emergency services in the event of a fire, reducing the chances of a false alarm or unnecessary dispatch of emergency services by allowing users time to cancel an alarm if the system believes the alarm has been set off in error.

Health Tracking

Sleep tech is quickly becoming the next big thing when it comes to health tracking. 28% of adults are using mobile phones to track their sleep, helping regulate sleeping cycles and promote better sleeping habits. However, the market has long outgrown smartphone applications, with everything from wearable wrist bands and rings to under-mattress sensors available to help users track their sleep.

The ability of smart homes to monitor and assist with health also extends to “ageing in place” and assisting vulnerable people who live alone. From allowing family members to video call and check in on their relatives to providing users with live physiotherapist sessions or smart pill dispensers, smart technology is rapidly enabling new levels of confidence in independent living.

It’s an exciting time for home technology as the cate gory evolves faster than ever and new developments bring greater convenience, comfort and efficiency to our lives. Smart home adoption is increasing at a breakneck pace, and brings with it a vast range of exciting innovations - which are you most excited about?

SIGNIFY WINS AWARD FOR 3D PRINTED LUMINAIRE MADE FROM FISHING NETS

• Sustainable 3D-printed Coastal Breeze pendant lamp wins prestigious Gold IDEA 2022 design award and honorable mention in Fast Company Innovation by Design awards

• Collection is 3D printed using discarded fishing nets for cleaner oceans and a low carbon footprint

• Exclusive 3D-printed table lamp will feature in Dutch Design Week 2022

Signify, the world leader in lighting, has won a Gold International Design Excellence Award (IDEA) for its Coastal Breeze collection of sustainable pendant lamps from circular materials. The Coastal Breeze Collection pendant was also awarded an honorable mention in the Fast Company Innovation by Design awards. The collection, including an exclusive, limited edition table lamp, will feature at Dutch Design week in Eindhoven from October 22 – 30, 2022.

The Philips MyCreation fishing net lamp was awarded a Gold IDEA by the Industrial Designers Society of America (IDSA). IDEA is one of the longest-running and most pres tigious design awards programs, recognizing exceptional design achievement across a range of disci plines. The lamp was also recognized as an honoree in the new Circular Design category of the Fast Company Innovation by Design award.

The Philips MyCreation Coastal Breeze Collection evokes the beauty of coastal areas while helping preserve these environments for the next generation. Between 10% and 46% of ocean plastic consists of fishing nets, lines and ropes. These nets are often discarded in the ocean, endangering the lives of marine wildlife. Transforming this

waste into 3D filament disposes of 4.5 meters of fishing net per luminaire.

As well as reusing ocean plastic, Signify’s 3D printing process helps reduce waste and contributes to a circular economy. Items can be printed locally on demand, so no excess stock is produced. There is no glue, fewer screws and the items are easy to disassemble and repair. And with up to 76% lower emissions from material supply and manufacturing, and up to 28% savings in transport, 3D printed luminaires offer a lower carbon alternative to conventional manufacturing.

Original nylon fish nets are sourced from fishermen on the UK’s Cornish coast and transformed by partner Fishy Filaments into granulate, the base material for 3D printing filament. The raw material is then processed into filament in Maarheeze, the Netherlands, and 3D printed in Turnhout, Belgium.

The finished lamps come in soft, organic silhouettes and the same characteristic blue green color of fishing nets. When lit, the recycled material shows gradients of blue green tones and small irregularities which make every lamp unique. The soft, diffuse light reveals the 3D texture of the shade. The textures are inspired by the sea: sand dunes, rippling water and fish scales.

For Dutch Design Week, Signify’s design team created a very special table lamp from fishing net material. Signify will participate at the event from October 22 – 30, showcasing the beautiful designs that can be made from discarded material using 3D printing.

The Philips MyCreation Coastal Breeze Collection is currently avail able online on the Philips MyCreation webshop in the Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark and Sweden. The Dutch Design Week Table Lamp will be printed in a limited edition 150-piece run and will be available exclusively to customers in the Netherlands.

Kevin Raaijmakers, Head of Growth for 3D Printing at Signify, said “The Coastal Breeze collection is special because it is beautiful in both its design and its purpose. Dutch Design Week is the ideal platform to showcase the real impact we can make when we are conscious about the products we bring into our homes. We want to share what we have learned about ocean pollution and the exciting solutions there are to use the waste we all generate. We are proud that Dutch Design Week considers our efforts to be a valuable asset to the design world.”

ENERGY CRISIS FUELS GROWTH FOR FOAM SEALANTS IN 2023, SAYS SECTOR LEADER

The energy crisis will ‘significantly fuel’ growth for window and door foam sealant tapes in 2023, according to Andy Swift, sales and operations manager for ISO-Chemie.

He sees the UK market remaining robust over the next 12 months with the need for more effective insulation and sealing solutions of windows and doors becoming a rapid priority in the design, specification, new build housing and wider commercial construction sectors.

Refurbishment of existing housing stock is also expected to support growth in 2023, says Andy Swift, as retrofitting sealing solutions can be a more effective way to achieve greater energy efficient homes rather than building new properties. Indeed, national housing associations such as Broadacres Housing Association and Gateshead Housing have been upgrading their current stock with new door and window installations sealed by foam tapes.

In the modular sector, house designers will continue to invest

•38•

in new ways to deliver low carbon structures, which use sustainable technologies such as foam sealant tapes to secure measurable airtight, acoustic and thermal sealing benefits.

Andy Swift said with energy rated and conservation products at the forefront of design and building regulations, there has to be ‘discernible’ growth for air tightness and thermal sealing products.

“With 25% of the heat leaking from around windows will be paramount for all in the construction and building sectors to effectively seal around the window to wall gap,” he said. “Millions of people will struggle to heat their homes and stay warm, but through the use of modern foam sealants to create a thermal and airtight seal around the window, the amount of heat loss around frames is significantly reduced, helping to save energy costs.”

MMC (modern methods of construction) will gain further traction as 2023 unfolds, which will lead to the continued integration of foam tapes with the more traditional methods of building, enabling developers to bring forward projects more expediently, Andy Swift said.

He added: “Retrofitting properties with products like Winframer, Vario SD and BLOCO ONE becomes a direct focus for property developers and housing associations and is a cost-effective way to insulate existing properties very quickly. As they say the greenest home is one already built. It just needs proper retrofit insulation.”

House building to higher air and thermal standards remains a priority, Andy Swift said - and is a message that will continued to be pushed in the coming months to architects and other property specifiers: “There are effective products out there to ensure that airtightness and thermal efficiency within buildings should never be overlooked or ignored - it’s a matter of designing in these products.”

SURFACE DESIGN SHOW ANNOUNCES EXCITING PLANS FOR 2023, WITH JUST OVER 100 DAYS TO GO UNTIL

DOORS OPEN

Surface Design Show is gearing up for next year’s edition, which is held from 7-9 February 2023, once again showcasing the best in material innovation. A wellestablished part of the design calendar for nearly twenty years, the show returns to London’s Business Design Centre in just over 100 days. It provides the perfect opportunity for material experts, and the architectural and design community to come together under one roof.

Visitors to Surface Design Show 2023 will be inspired by new product launches running the gamut of colour, materiality and sustain ability, plus diverse displays of surface-based installations and a comprehensive speaker programme featuring accom plished industry professionals, passionate about the future of surface design.

Surface Design Show has already welcomed over 130 exhibitors to participate. These include Red Dog Glass Design which produces beau tiful glass splashbacks; Applelec which specialises in signage, display and lighting and celebrates 25 years in business in 2023 and contemporary metalworking company Novocastrian.

Returning to the event once again is Armourcoat, renowned for its

polished plaster, sculptural effects and innovative surface finishes. Innovations include Armourcoat Clime, which produces a stunning matt stone surface finish and Armourcoat Sculptural panel systems which offer a seamless three-dimensional finish. Other long-term supporters of the show include Textura, specialists in contract wall coverings which can transform a space and Surface Matter which connect architectural materials with creatives for inte rior and exterior design projects. For Tile of Spain’s 2023 stand, expect an eclectic collection of products from 12 manufacturers from small formats and mosaics to 3D surfaces and technical slabs.

Supporting emerging material designers has always been impor tant to Surface Design Show. That is why the New Talent section will, for the fourth year in a row, be

held in partnership with Trendease International. Its Chief Creative Director, Jennifer Castoldi, will be curating over 30 ‘New Talents’ this year. The section will inspire and excite visitors with the ‘class of 23’ showcasing a fascinating mix of biomaterials, natural materials, digital print, textiles, furniture, wallcovering, weaving and biopol ymers. This forthcoming edition will be the most international yet with New Talents coming from as far afield as Sweden, the Netherlands, Lebanon, Malaysia, Korea and China and will give them the opportunity to learn from each other and to connect for a better future.

Located right in the heart of the exhibition, Surface Design Show welcomes back Surface Spotlight Live (SSL), an area which gives visitors a chance to touch and compare the latest material proto types. Centred around this year’s theme, ‘Shaping Communities’, SSL will highlight the importance of new exchanges between surfaces, people and environments. From material transformation to inclu sive design, co-creation to sensory

•40•

wellbeing, SSL will present designs creating thoughtful solutions for interiors and architecture. This section of the show will again be curated by leading trend and colour expert, Sally Angharad.

Stone Gallery showcases the possi bilities with one of the most soughtafter materials with this section of the show attracting companies from the UK, Europe and further afield. It is officially supported by Stone Federation Great Britain whose Knowledge Hub forms a focal point for its member companies. Stone Tapestry, meanwhile, is an instal lation curated by leading Londonbased architectural practice Squire & Partners. It explores innovative textures, light, colour and pattern to create a tapestry of inspiring mate rials from around the world.

The talks programme is always a particular highlight of Surface Design Show. The Main Stage, designed by Emily Skinner of recy cling pioneers Smile Plastics, will host 18 different presentations and feature more than 40 speakers, inspiring a professional audience of architects and designers.

Setting the tone for the live events programme will be the Opening Night Debate, hosted this year by Jonathan Smales, executive chairman with Human Nature, a leading proponent of sustainable development. The debate, which has CDUK as the official partner, will question how architec ture and interior design professions are dealing with the Show’s theme of Shaping Communities.

Over the 2½ days, the Main Stage will host a range of debates, panels, trend forecasts and insights into the latest surface design innovations. It will also be the venue for the Legends Live series of ‘in conver sations’ in partnership with Mix Interiors, where industry leaders interview someone they admire.

The PechaKucha evening also returns for 2023 having previously been an entertaining talking point of Surface Design Show. This fast and furious speaking format sees eight speakers battling to get their message across, presenting 20 slides for just 20-seconds each. The evening will be hosted by Nicola Osborn, creative director of design studio Basha-Franklin.

Another popular element of the show is the Surface Design Awards. Now in their 11th year, they continue to set a benchmark for architectural and design achievements across the world. More than 110 projects were entered into the 2023 Surface Design Awards, coming from an impressive 24 different countries. The BAFTA Headquarters in London by Benedetti Architects, which scooped the Supreme Winner award in 2022 set the standard for excel lence in surface design. Following the success of its debut last year, the Architectural Photography cate gory returns once more for 2023.

This year the Awards’ judging panel is co-chaired by Jonathan Hagos, Director of architects studio Freehaus and Nasim Koerting Head of Design at The Office Group, and features a diverse mix of industry professionals who have made a name for themselves amongst their peers.

Surface Design Show 2023 builds on the success of the event, which has been running for over fifteen years, as a place to encourage a mean ingful exchange of ideas between manufacturers and the marketplace to further material innovation.
